If you can't get to the Met before the display closes, you can go to the Met's website, click the collections button, then put lace into the search field and bring up all sorts of lovely items. I found a piece of needle lace (probably Amelia Ars) that is not on display, but the resolution is so great that I can use it for my documentation in the future. Further details are available on the Met's site: http://www.metmuseum.org/en/exhibitions/listings/2012/european-lace or you can request a press release (PDF file) from Devon ( dmt11h...@aol.com). Avital Gems of European Lace, ca. 16001920 July 24, 2012January 13, 2013 The lace collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the finest in the country. On view in this exhibition are a variety of styles and techniques spanning a period of more than three hundred years. Handmade lace falls into two basic technical categories: needle and bobbin. Needle lace is built up from a single thread that is worked in a variety of looping, or buttonhole, stitches. Bobbin lace originated in braiding; it is woven from multiple threads, which are organized on individual bobbins. Beyond these two basic categories, lace terminology can be quite confusing. Many of the terms used today were developed by nineteenthcentury dealers who wished to distinguish historical lace styles for the purpose of describing them to customers. The majority of these terms derive from the name of the town or region where each style was first made. Depictions of lacemaking in genre paintings of the seventeenth century, as well as the numerous portraits of fashionably dressed men and women wearing lace accessories, demonstrate the importance of this fabric. The best-quality lace was extremely expensive due to the time-consuming and painstaking process of transforming fine linen thread into such intricate openwork structures. Rather surprisingly, the seventeenth-century English clergyman Thomas Fuller defended the wearing of lace and the nascent English lacemaking industry, writing that it cost nothing save a little thread descanted on by art and industry, and saveth some thousands of pounds yearly, formerly sent over to fetch lace from Flanders. In the late nineteenth century American women began to recycle antique lace for use in fashion. As a result, many women began to collect and study lace, taking an interest not only in its artistry and complexity of construction but also in the historical and cultural contexts in which it was made and used. Particularly prized among collectors were pieces associated with a royal provenance, to the extent that many such histories were invented for the profit of dealers. In large part, this collection reflects the interest of these women who became serious collectors and who graciously donated their collections to the Museum. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Re state fair exhibit (was Handmade)
I understand that I may not know what I'm talking about (or view things in a very different way, because I do that for sure), but I have to wonder: Re: judges not touching the lace Are people afraid that the judges are going to be so rough with the lace that they are going to tear it or destroy it or something? I'm not talking about random passersby, here. I'm talking about the judges. Most fairs I've been to (which, granted, haven't been in a lot of areas, only Tulsa, Winston-Salem, NC, and Colorado) have, at the very least, something keeping the general fairgoer away from the entries (and this is all entries, breakables, fiber, eatables, etc). I understand that some aren't as secure as others (putting up a rope 4' away from the displays isn't necessarily going to stop a child who's parents aren't paying attention to them), but they do have something up. Note: All of the competitions I've ever been in are SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) related. I have always had the judge pick up and look at my work (usually they asked permission, but I went into all competitions I did with the expectation that they would have to pick up my work to look at the stitches closer). They also have always treated my work with respect, handling it the least amount they had to, and NEVER roughly. Also, please note that in the SCA region that I'm in, the way a person's work is judged is with the person sitting right there, giving information and answering questions about the item(s) they've entered. Even so, I've also left my lace on my table (with children running about) and never come back to a piece that's been tampered with in any way. So I guess I wonder if there is really such an issue about judges messing up already finished lace items? Bronwen On Thu, May 5, 2011 at 10:11 AM, Lorri Ferguson lorri...@msn.com wrote: In our area we have had a very creative lacer, who over came the 'must see the back' rule in 2 creative ways: 1- a butterfly was inserted into one of the acrylic frames molded at an angle to be free standing, 2- a Rib Roll piece was mounted at the very top to a lovely matted background in a frame (no glass, that would be inserted when she got the piece). Both pieces took awards and the RR piece received Grand Champion of all the Lace items entered (plus a nice check). Both pieces were easily judged and easy for the Fair Clerks to handle and display. Items at this fair are all displayed behind glass. Just put on your thinking caps. Lorri Dear Liz, Since then I always turn in my entries in a frame so that no one can actually touch the lace. Then if I were judging your lace, I would have to disqualify it, for much of my judging is done by viewing the rear of the article. One show I judge at does indeed have a section for framed pieces and that's just fine. Fwd: [lace] knitting
Knitting is not really ancient, as having been around during Jesus' time. Naalbinding, the predecessor to knitting, was developed much earlier than that (and may be a few thousand years old). Knitting as we know it (involving two needles and pulling loops through loops) was first seen around 1000 AD. (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEAThistory101.html This is a pretty good article on the history of knitting. I could wish it was footnoted, however.) I have heard the legend of the reason for the soldiers throwing lots for Jesus' garment as being the weave was so fine, that it was worth quite a bit more if they kept it all in one piece, rather than dividing it up. While it is more time consuming to weave something in the round without a seam, it would be quite possible to do with the technology they had in the first century. And the fact that it is more time consuming to weave in the round would lend credence to the thought that it was an extremely valuable piece of cloth. Ob lace content: I am very close to being 3/4 way through a 4 by 8 piece of reticello lace who's pattern comes from the 1500's. It's only taken me two years to get here. Re: [lace] Re: Fiber familiarity
A couple of years ago, at a Society for Creative Anachronism Arts Sciences event for the Kingdom (region), I had entered some reticello I'd worked on. As I was sitting and talking with people, one man came up to me (who is really into making chain mail items), picked up my piece of lace, and told me how he could never have the patience to do that. All the intricate work, all the time put into it. He'd be throwing the thing across the room in no time! I knew he made his own chain mail armor, and asked him how long it took him to do that. Did he make the rings himself, or did he buy them pre-made? He started talking about how to make the rings (as he made them himself) and how long it took to make a chain mail shirt. Then I brought the conversation back to the lace by saying, See, I could never do what you do. I would never have the patience to cut the rings and make something as huge as your armor! And when my lace goes flying (which it does), and it hits the TV, at least the lace is soft and it doesn't break the TV screen! He understood. Most people have something they love doing that takes a lot of time and effort to do well. They just don't realize that whatever it is that somebody else is doing is their thing that they love and takes a lot of time and effort to do well. Re: [lace] Bamboo yarn
One of the things about bamboo yarn or thread is that bamboo is an extremely fast growing plant, in both ways. Some bamboo strains grow as much as 4 feet in a 24 hour period, and all bamboo has the potential to grow to full height and girth in one growing season of 3 to 4 months ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo), and if you plant a hedge of bamboo in your yard, it will spread and take over the yard in a few years. So, a lot of industries are looking into making things (like paper or yarn) out of bamboo as it's a much more ecologically sound idea than cutting down forests, and a lot more economically sound idea than having to plant new forests and wait 10 to 20 years before they can use the trees again. With bamboo, it's ready to harvest and be processed into products like yarn and hardwood for floors in 3-7 years. Ob lace: I've never tried to make any lace with bamboo, but from what I've felt of bamboo rayon in the stores, if I could find some thread small enough, I think it would have a lovely hand and would drape beautifully for a ruffle worn around the neck. Branwyn, who is not part of the bamboo industry or the yarn industry, but likes the feel and drapability of the bamboo yarn she has felt. I agree that the 100% Bamboo yarn feels like rayon... in fact, I think it essentially *is* rayon, made from bamboo... and I think the milk yarn is another form of rayon, but in the case of the yarn I saw yesterday, they had the sense to blend it with Merino wool, making it a lovely confection! The one distinction I could see in bamboo yarn (100%) was that it didn't have the glossy sheen of the old, familiar rayon, but a much softer sheen, which was desirable, in my opinion. Still, as I said, I think the blend of a more robust fiber with the bamboo would improve the texture and the hand. Clay On 1/27/2010 5:21 AM, laceandb...@aol.com wrote: Brenda On some bamboo yarn I bought in America, it is actually labelled rayon from bamboo fibre, which I think is a much more honest way of describing it, and rayon is exactly what 100% or nearly 100% bamboo feels like. Someone I was talking to thought that it was made from the inner pith of the bamboo canes, and spun directly from the fibres there, a bit like linen. I wonder how ecologically friendly these new fibres are, by the time the raw materials are shipped to the factory, and then undergone some fairly major chemistry. They sound as if they ought to be, but I suspect they're not. Jacquie In Lincolnshire - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Arachne'sWeb
Due to the wording, it looks like it's talking about one of the many lace guilds in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism). There is an SCA wide lacemaking guild called Arachne's Web and then at least 3 different Kingdoms (geographic locations) have guilds also named Arachne's Web or something like it. After doing some searching, I found that the specific guild you are talking about (same wording) is within the Kingdom of the West (which is upper California, USA). Branwyn, member of the SCA, but not in a kingdom that has a lacemakers guild. [lace] Thank you everybody
I received many wonderful responses from the list. Thank you all for taking the time to answer me! Mostly I was given the advice to ask questions, so I will. Good thing I'm not shy, right? A little background info, first: About 4 years ago, I had the chance to learn pulled thread embroidery, with the idea that I would be able to continue on to learn reticello, punta in aria, and other needle laces. This was a lovely idea, unfortunately, it fell apart in the implementation. Right after I had the basics (preparing the cloth, pulling the threads, wrapping the warp and weft left in, doing some very basic embellishments like spiders) I moved from North Carolina to Colorado. From what I can tell, in my regional group, there are some very wonderful bobbin lacers around, but I was the first to work pulled thread embroidery and then to start teaching myself reticello. I have yet to move on to punta in aria. I have been reading websites, and what books I could find, and they are nice, but I learn best from seeing something done. All this is to say: I was having trouble with tension. My very first reticello-like design (taken from a pattern book from the 1500's) came out looking nothing at all like it was supposed to look. The second piece, I couched the brides down to the paper, and the lace came out ... well, not perfect, I have a long way to go, but looking like the design should look. So, in doing reticello or similar types of needle lace, is couching the brides normal or am I doing it wrong? Thank you so much for your patience in reading through this whole missive.
