Hi all,
I was looking at a Bucks pattern that I'd like to start & see a term that I
haven't seen before even though I have been making Bucks for years. I hope
someone can explain this term to me.
The written instruction says"work honeycomb ring with a* pinchain* on
the left side" Pinchain is the term I'm asking about.
Thanks for any help.

Subject: [lace] Smelly books

Not a book
expert, but can share some of what I know related to yarn and
threads, as I
have obtained used lace books now (that I normally would never
have in the
house smelling that badly) and must deal with this myself.
Many say charcoal
(mentioned) and kitty litter (old fashioned clay sort) draw
out smells.
Sometimes you have to put over said, and in a plastic bag, and
forget it for
awhile (perhaps a long while).
Many with yarn suggest Febreze (North America
product that removes smells) but
it has moisture, and to my mind, is a
chemical, so some may be adverse.  Lysol
also makes a product that not only
takes smell but disinfects.  Someone
mentioned dryer sheets, and I saw ads for
them that contain Febreze, which may
help.
I had also considered a bleach
solution, as in general contracting,
bleach/water 1:10 ratio will take mold
and mildew from anything supposedly, so
I thought about misting and ironing
pages.  There may be some distortion and a
steam iron itself may be enough to
kill mold/mildew (but not staining they may
create), but I felt that misting
with the solution each page (on one side) and
then ironing it, would accrue
effect as one moved through the book.  Of course
I would not do this on a
highly collectible book.
On the dry side, many take wool and place in a black
plastic bag (contractors
bags are heavy and black) or even a car in summer
time as it gets hot (trunks
or bonnets tend to be insulated so won't get as
hot).  This can kill critters,
but also smaller cell life forms such as mold).

Additionally, it makes me think of how a lighted match, extinguished, takes
smell, so I envisioned myself with a book of matches, lighting them near a
book (but not the book!  LOL) and holding up to pages and progressing through
the book, then sealing it off and doing the black plastic bag treatment to
bake it in.
The old cure for books that got wet was to simply blot as much
moisture as
possible, and then press weight down on it and give it time to
dry.  (You can
tell people with children!)  :-)  If the page has colored
prints or detail
work (prickings?), then I put waxed paper between the pages I
think need extra
attention or may tend to stick together to avoid that
problem.  My thought was
that perhaps a misting of the bleach water and then
the weighted pressing may
work, but I thought ironing them would be a better
for myself.
If it is cigarette smells, then I would think old fashioned
pressing flowers
of a scent you like, such as lavendar, could be productive?
 Rose petals,
peonies and the like, though I suppose technically they could
wick oil onto
the page.  Perhaps many of us have pressed flowers in a book
without ill
effect.
Of course all of these suggestions are subject to the
preciousness of the book
itself, and the versatile technique and aptitude of
the administrator.  ;-)
Perhaps as I work through my new (old) smelly books I
can report back, but I
think any needs to be done in a well ventilated room.
 Test a corner or page
first please!

floor when she manages to get one. What a fun sound she thinks. Curious cats

So, after alerting everyone to the TIME TO RENEW line on the IOLI label
AND

causing a bit of controversy, this issue's TIME TO RENEW line is on the
wrong people's labels. I just feel wretched about this.

I was ill at the time, trying to fight through and get the job done, but
really I should have double checked again. I apologize for the mix-up.
Please don't panic when the line is on there. If you have a question,

I have to call the rest of them.

Please let everyone know that you see. I can't imagine all the panic and

I'm so terribly sorry.

Dear Spiders...

I have two questions for the list. I know the answers are out there, and
will appreciate any information you send me.

First... does anyone have the current email address for Simon Toustou in
Canada? I have a friend who wants to purchase some bobbin holders, and I
seem to have tossed the information I once had from him. (Can't imagine
WHAT came over me!!)

The second question may be harder. I have - posted on my refrigerator
with a couple of magnets (both lace-related!) - a cartoon which shows a
woman writing, and a descriptive note on the left says, "The woman who
manages her time so much better than you do writes in her journal about
cable television." but the "word bubble" of her journal entry takes up
most of the space and says, "I was approched by one of those cable
companies offering to install cable television in my home, free, for one
month. Well, I was amused because, of course, we don't own a television
set. Our family evenings are spent reading aloud to one another, singing
our own compositions around the grand piano, or making lace."

Isn't that a hoot?!? This was something that a sharp-eyed Arachnid once
alerted us to, and I printed it off the URL she posted. I've really loved
it, and would like to see more cartoons by this person. Does anyone know
who did this cartoon, and where I would go to see more?

OK... that was a major distraction from the easy question... so if you
know Simon's email addy, please let me know... and then get on with
digging for the other question!! MANY thanks for your help!!

Welsh Dragon

Hi Lacemakers all,

Celebrated St Catherines day by making some
Cattern cakes to share with my
lace group on Saturday. They went down well
with our coffee.

One of my pupils wants to make a Welsh Dragon for her future
grandson-in-law. Does anyone out there know of a suitable pattern (other
than
the one in the Lace Guild magazine Vol 48) or one that could be
adapted. If
not, it's out with the drawing board - but with Christmas coming
time is at a
premium.

I've just finished making a yard of Bucks point lace for another
garter and
the Nativity scene from the latest issue of Lace Express which was
pleasing
to work - I'll try and post pictures on webshots in due course. What
has
anyone else been doing?

I'm looking forward to seeing this years
Christmas card exchanges - I missed
out as I was away when the call for
participants went out.

Happy lacing

Hello to the list,
Some of you may already know me, but here goes the intro for all the
buddies out there:
I'm Debora Lustgarten, a beginner-intermediate BLer in Toronto, Ontario. I
get together with the ladies of the Simcoe County Lacemakers group and the
Toronto ladies.
I came to bobbin lace first by trying out an Anna's intro to BL many years
ago in Latin America, as part of getting in touch with my Spanish roots.
Frustrated by the lack of teachers/books/supplies, I let it lie until I got
into Medieval recreation in Canada (the SCA), then I started searching for
pals in my area and here I am.
Currently I'm doing the first edging in Brigite Bellon's Gekloppeln
Reticella, and hope to do more of that, and for Christmas/Yule presents,
plan to work on two UFOs (glass round candle-holders, very nice to put
small mats inside).
Well, hope to get to know more of you soon!
Cheers,
Debora L.

I am interested as Michel Jourde uses it a lot in his designs in "Lace

Hi Bev,

I'll be your company!!! I'm also working on a garter. Your patterns sounds
very similar to mine with the beading down the centre. I just measered mine

and I am at 33 centimetres. When do you need yours done by? My son's
wedding is August 26, but I want to get it done in plenty of time.

You've been making so many 12 inch (30 cm) pieces lately, I'm sure that's
why it seems slow. Remember to keep going once you reach 30 cm. (hehehehe)

These garters are beautiful, but a lot of work. Do we have anyone else

This is a lovely resolution!
I have some free fun advice - work on lace 20 minutes a day, just like
exercise. You can weave at your pillow, or sort Stuff, or look at

Hello lace friends,

I 'm repeating this as it seems I sent one off yesterday failing to put
anything in the subject line. Oops!

My DH & I are planning a trip to Tennessee in late March/early April.

I was just wondering if there is anything lace related to see while on
vacation in the great Smokies We are staying in that area for about 1 week.

Looking forward to hearing about anything that's happening there.

Thanks

No -- but it would be from someone who had gotten them from Simon. Robin
and Russ used to carry a pillow or two, but Russ would pick them up from
Simon at IOLI conference, then put them in his store. I think they were
ordered personally at the previous IOLI.

At the time they were available here, I couldn't afford them. All I
could do was drool over them (NOT on them) when I saw them. And dream.

RE: [lace] Re: Wear More Lace!

2005-01-11 Thread JOAN WILSON
Hi from a lurker,
I was reading & thinking about this subject.
Lace today could be used beautifully for trim if you want to wear
it. Think about just trimming a pocket edge on a stunning white blouse, a
collar on the same under a nice black pant suit or a lovely lace trim hanky
stuffed in the pocket of the suit, not just the breast pocket but the one at
the hip. It doesn't have to be a necklace or cuff. It could be a pretty trim
on an apron you wear for special occasion while serving at the local church
supper. These are ways that I would wear lace.
Well...just my thoughtsnow back to Lurk Dom.
Yours in lace,
Joan

This is why I do not consider teaching bobbin lace to the young to be the
most efficacious way of promoting modern lace. Their role is to wear it and

look great. If they were working away in silent loneliness for the hours it

takes to produce even the smallest piece of lace they would not be on the
phone
ferreting out the trendy places to wear it. It takes hours and hours on the

phone to find out where the cool people are.

I myself am severely disabled in trying to find the cool people. I seem to
be taking my cue from old I Love Lucy reruns. I even bought New York
Magazine
and Time Out New York in an attempt to find out where the rich and
cultivated
hang out. I am thinking that if you have to buy magazines to tell you where
the cool people are, you are probably not going to find them.

If you want to promote modern lace, pin a piece to a teenager and give her
a
cell phone!

No, you're not. I've heard from one member of Arachne on the west
coast on Canada, one in central Canada, and I'm in eastern Canada, and
none of us have received our copies yet; Which is really weird,
considering that's it's arrived in Australia, Estonia, England, etc.
And we're much geographically closer than any of those countries.
What's going on? It's this way with every issue. It makes you wonder
why we pay extra for postage to Canada.

Jenny - mine still hasn't arrived. As you might have read, Jacquie who
lives in England received hers but mine - to Canada - is
still on its way to cross the border. The fall colour is very beautiful
this year, so perhaps it is taking its time and looking at
all the leaves on the way.

Have had time to rake some leaves and start putting down my basement
flooring; laundry for my friend in hospital has just been
brought in as it has started to rain.

Oh well, it will be here in due course and I might have some time to sit
down and read it when it arrives.

Re: [lace] Brass Pins

2003-10-23 Thread Joan Wilson
I have worked with brass pins too & like Liz says left a project on the
pillows for far too long.
The pins in my Honiton pillow which is made of barley straw were
corroded so badly that I couldn't remove them without damaging the lace.
Sob!
The pins in a pillow made of biulders foam on which I was learning
Withof came out clean & shiny as new.
It must be that the barley straw holds humidity. Both pillows were
stored in a spare bedroom for about the same amount of time.
Any other ideas??

Re: [lace] pin cleaning

2003-10-19 Thread Joan Wilson
Hi all
I'll add a 3rd recipe for cleaning brass pins.

This was given to our class learning Withof a few yrs. ago. I have used it
several times & the pins come out sparkling like new.

To 1 cup boiling water add
   1 teaspoon dish detergent &
1 teaspoon vinegar
I put it in a jar, add the pins & shake a few times let stand a few minutes
then, rinse well in clear water & spread on paper towels to dry.
