Re: [lace] Single space between sentences; avoid quotations/apostrophes
I was taught in typing class many years ago to put two spaces after periods and other punctuation as well. I only learned of the new trend of one space in the last few years when I began to attend groups for writers. It took some retraining, but now I prefer the one space as it's one less tap of a key. Lazy me. Haha I agree a person should just do what they are used to when it comes to emails and social media. It's only when one plans to publish that this might become an issue. It's not like there are space police out there hanging around with the lace police to come down on offenders. Thank you Nancy. That is very helpful! Liz in rainy SW Missouri where it feels like spring really means water pouring from somewhere everyday! -Original Message- From: N.A. NeffTo: Arachne Sent: Thu, Mar 29, 2018 10:47 am Subject: [lace] Weaver's knot Hello arachnids, I've been attaching twine to the ends of the threads coming from each card in my tablet-weaving deck, using a weaver's knot. In the course of this practice (40 cards in my current deck, for example), I have figured out how to do a weaver's knot so it holds. Because the threads are bigger and different colors, I can see how the knot is made, and I can now make a good one every time. (Ta dah!!) Because there have been questions about weaver's knots in the past, and because making this knot would often give me fits before my recent epiphany, I've put together a series of rough photos that shows the steps that work for me. Purple is the "broken thread" and cream the "new thread", but that's probably obvious from the slip knot being made in the cream thread. These photos have been uploaded to Arachne2003 on Flickr, into the album "Weaver's Knot". I strongly recommend getting two colors of twine or cord, perhaps crochet cotton, and practicing while being able to see the knot as you make it. I hope someone finds these instructions useful. Re: [lace] Re: hint - elastic bands on bobbins
I have used small stretchy/elastic hair bands on bobbins to keep the workers identified so I don't mix them up. These have a thread type covering so I don't think they would stick to the bobbins when they get old. I've also used the little stretchy hair bands without a thread covering for small projects like a bookmarks. Traditional rubber bands do break down, but I've only seen both of these just get too loose or break. [lace] Christmas card exchange 2017
REALLY?! All this infighting regarding the exchange makes me feel like I'm listening to a bunch of high schoolers arguing over who gets to be head cheerleader. There is no cheer in it - Christmas or otherwise. In most groups, it's difficult to get anyone to volunteer to do anything and now many here are arguing who will organize an exchange that is supposed to be about sharing our gifts and skills. Does it matter who organizes it that Arachne will splinter and fall apart if one person does it versus another person? Janet would have discovered Lin was starting to organize it when she came back from vacation. It should then have been up to Janet to privately talk to Lin about it - maybe even thanking her for getting things started. I suspect Lin was thinking sending out the invitation this early would help slow lacers and newbies or people with a lot of time constraints around the holidays to get an early start and make their plans. If between Janet and Lin, it was decided Janet would take over, then again, it should have been left up to them to decide and go on from there. It seems to me all this taking sides is ruining the whole intent of the exchange. In my opinion, all this is very immature and petty and should stop immediately. If Janet still wants to do it, she can converse with Lin off list and they can work something out. Frankly, I'm exhausted from the whole thing. Avital is right, this stuff doesn't belong on the list which is supposed to be about making lace, not enemies. I have to agree with Nancy on this. I was shocked to see the unhappiness rise up so suddenly and wonder if it might have been better if it had been resolved privately between those upset by it? Rumblings across the list are disruptive to the usual kindness and helpfulness I usually see. While I have not signed up lately due to time constraints, Lin was very encouraging and was particularly careful that I receive a bookmark a couple of years ago when my partner was unable to finish on time due to family issues. Perhaps she has gotten so used to handling the other exchanges, it didn't occur to her she might be stepping on toes. Since we try to be so careful of where we "cross and twist or twist and cross," we might try the same with our interactions. Re: [lace-chat] New use for a lace pillow
Our cats haven't found the lace pillows yet, but they are in competition for the heat registers, the cube houses, or on or near our laps. My husband commented tonight he didn't know what he'd done to make them "love" him so much. Our cats seem to have a routine rotation between several places, depending on whether or not the heat is blowing. Our weather has been changing constantly, too. We had 70's earlier last week, then a sudden drop in temperatures and freezing rain/ice. Now that's melted and it's warmed up to just rain. I think by Monday or Tuesday, it's supposed to get in the 60's and 70's again, but still more rain. We are both retired so it doesn't matter if we get house bound for a few days. I like the idea of using honey and lemon instead of the molasses and vinegar (although I do like molasses). I'm going to have to try this! What is your recipe? Liz and hot and humid Missouri, USA. It's always this way in July/August, but I never really get used to it. The humidity and heat combined seem to drain all my energy. * I was mostly drinking tea and switchel; I have discovered that I can freeze switchel concentrate in half-cup containers and boop up water I've picked up along the way. Switchel is an eighteenth-century hayhand's drink consisting of ginger, molasses, vinegar, and optional oatmeal. I substitute honey and freshly-squeezed lemon juice for the molasses and vinegar. Re: [lace] Lace and spider fabric
It looks to me to be the exact lace fabric at Jo-Ann's. What I purchased there was not as white as the pictures indicated, and I would be willing to bet this won't be either. Since Jo-Ann's has it on sale right now for 30% off, and the regular price is $9.99 a yard, I'm wondering if this individual bought some with the idea of selling it at a higher price? If I was going to purchase from this individual, I would ask them directly if it came from Jo-Ann's or if it has Jo-Ann's on the selvedge. But that's just me. Liz in Missouri, USA Sent: Tue, Aug 2, 2016 10:26 am Subject: Re: [lace] Lace and spider fabric Doesn't it seem illegal for somebody to pirate the design? Just asking. Two salespeople in Jo-Ann's told me that they probably would get more of the lace and spiders fabric in before Halloween. Re: [lace] Looking for instructions.
Can you post a photo? If you belong to one of the Facebook bobbin lace groups, maybe someone there could help you. I'd be curious about it, too. Hi, A few years back I had found instructions on the internet for making a travel bobbin lace pillow from cigar boxes. Does anyone remember seeing this and does anyone know where I might find those instructions again? It was very clever. It folded up and was very easy to carry to demonstrations. I had made one and i brought it to my lace group and now a couple ladies want to make one also. But I no longer have the instructions. HELP! Patsy A. Goodman Patsy A. Re: [lace] Golden Hands and the German Book
I bought a set of Golden Hands in a binder from a thrift store. I don't know if I have all of them or not, but I suspect it is a partial collection. Incidentally I think the "pig" in the German Lace book is actually a dog - its tail is wrong for a pig. Re: [lace] pillow infestation
If it gets cold outside where you live, maybe you can put it in a protective plastic bag and put it outside for a few days when the temps are below freezing. Liz in cool and cloudy Missouri, USA -Original Message- From: JaneTo: lace Sent: Wed, Dec 2, 2015 1:00 pm Subject: [lace] pillow infestation Hi All, I can no longer ignore the fact that the lace pillow I've used for years has mites. They keep popping up among my threads. I've searched the arachne archives, where freezing seems to be the best recommendation, although spraying in some way is another. Unfortunately my pillow is too large to go in our freezer, and the cover is not removeable so I can't spray inside the pillow. The most workable suggestion is to put the pillow in a plastic bag and spray with insecticide (cat & dog type flea spray), seal and leave for a few days. The discussion was dated 2004. I just wondered if anyone has more recent experience / success to share? [lace] Lace book on Project Gutenberg
I thought I'd already looked at all the lace books on Project Gutenberg, however, today I ran across this one on the origin of lace and found it interesting. It has a lot of photos of examples of different kinds of lace. https://www.gutenberg.org/files/38973/38973-h/38973-h.htm Liz R in Missouri USA - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Oneida lace--summer 2008
Susan, when I did a search for Oneida lace, I came across a lot of information regarding Oneida Indian lace. I don't know if it would be from one of their publications or not as I wasn't able to find any online except a few on this site regarding historical artifacts. http://tinyurl.com/nflcarp Can you post a link to a photo or something so we could see what you are talking about? Good luck in your search! Liz R in very cool and very rainy Missouri USA Hello All! Happy Thanksgiving! I am writing with the hope that someone can help identify the source of a beaded lace bracelet. Our guild taught lacemaking techniques to Girl Scouts using a similar bracelet in October. After our positive experience with the Scouts, we decided to donate our idea to IOLI. Before doing so & upon closer inspection of the file, we noticed part of a name, that might be Debra Jenny, near pictures of sample bracelets. We do not have the original source material & do not know whether this is a copyright pattern or who worked the samples. Our source page seems to have been consolidated/copied & it was part of a collection of files that was donated to us. One our members enhanced the bracelet by creating a button start, increase/decrease rows & a macrame loop closure. Other members helped by working samples & refining these additional features. While this "new" bracelet bears little resemblance to the "Oneida lace--summer 2008" item, we have m! ade numerous inquiries thru IOLI members to preclude any copyright issues. So far, we have come up empty handed. If anyone on Arachne can help, we would be most thankful.
