2019-09-25 Thread Lin Hudren
Hello Fellow Lacers,

I would like to thank all those participants in the Arachne exchanges the
last years who love to make and share lace. Let's allow the fun to begin
again. Cards can be displayed all year long so they are cherished with
fond memories.

This year the schedule will go like this:

September 10 Sign Ups begin until October 2

October 4 Exchange partner assignments made and emailed out

December 1 All cards should be in the mail, please

Same guidelines apply as the previous exchanges: send in name, snail mail
address, email address, how many cards you wish to make and any
geographical preferences you have to me at *linhud...@gmail.com
*. After making your card(s) please take a picture
and email directly to me. If you wonder if your partner was unable to send
in a photo of the bookmark they sent to you, just send a photo upon receipt
and I will make sure everyone is represented. We will be following up to
make sure we get photos of all of them so if you think you will have a
problem, just let me know. Thanks.

If this is your first time or you are participating for an additional time,
I hope you will have lots of fun. Any type of lace and pattern is
appropriate. Any skill level is welcome. This is creative license at its
best. Don't be shy. This is your time to shine and have fun.

Thanks and hope you will enjoy as much as I plan to.

Hugs, Lin and the Mali

[lace] Subject Line Editing;/Lacemaking Time Management/Bad Lacemaking Habits

2019-01-28 Thread Jeri Ames
I have decided not to continue bcc-ing people who told me they didn't get my
e-mails because Gmail and AOL are incompatible.  Some of my letters never get
to Arachne, and I'm not going to worry about that anymore, either.  Maybe
someone will re-post if what I write might help others.
Please note that Susan Hottle's memo says she could not find the discussion on
Cotona green thread.  As I have written to Arachne many times - consider that
much of today's correspondence is still being filed under Bedfordshire lace.
If you want to find things in the archives, remember to change the Subject
line when you veer off-topic.  Today, even the hours you spend on lace are
usually going to the wrong permanent file.

2018-04-16 Thread Agnes Boddington
I started lace in the early 90s with the dreaded Dryad kit and plastic
bobbins.

Tried to teach myself, and asked husband to make me some decent bobbins,
which he did.

I did not do a lot of lace as I was still teaching foreign languages and
English, but when they closed our department down, I really got into it and
a local friend pointed me to Arachne. Since then there is no stopping me,
even though I still don't have a lot of time as I still teach privately and
do translation/interpreting work.

Through eBay I found a local woman I'd known for years, but did not know
that she had started making bobbin lace. She told me of a lace group in
Hull, and about Arachne. I don't post often, but read all the messages and
advice, and found "soul mates" all over.

I wish Arachne and all its members a long live and keep the chat and tips
coming.

[lace] Again, Please Change Arachne Subject Titles when You Change Subjects

2018-03-31 Thread Jeri Ames
One of our valued members has told me that searches can turn up more than I
think, and that changing the subject line is not really necessary.  That may
be so.   However, I still see the problem because of the way new mail is
listed in my inbox when I sign on.  Subject lines sometimes clue me what to
read right away and what to leave for a more convenient time.

I am very busy every day with large collections of laces and the library here,
plus a large property to maintain.  I do all the manual work, except mowing
and plowing snow.  Otherwise, as you've read before, I do far more than
others at 80, and am busy from morning to midnight with much time needed for
re-reading, privately answering your questions, etc.  I offered to retire
from Arachne quite some time ago, and that was met with a chorus against.  We
need others to step up to the plate.

Please indulge me with changed message subjects whenever possible, just as I
still provide you with information you might not be able to easily find
anywhere else.  And know that you can always arrange to come here to do
research in a facility unlike others - anywhere.

I indulge gmail users who do not receive my AOL mail via Arachne - by sending
a long list of members bccs.  That takes far more typing time than changing a
subject to more correctly reflect what is being shared.  If my young computer
guru had not died, I'd have him here to make a one-word address for these
gmail users.  The Senior Center is having great difficulty replacing him,
because he was a volunteer.

[lace] Please Change Arachne Subject Titles when You Change Subjects

2018-03-30 Thread Jeri Ames
This is another reminder - of many sent over the years.

We have just received a most interesting and valuable 3/30/18 post from Amy of
the University of Minnesota about Instagram, Facebook and Ning under the
subject:  Lace, Not Lace Reaction to Needle Lace Revival Arachne comments
3/28/18.  Those of us who are seniors may not have access to someone who is
qualified to teach us about these subjects.  It would have taken quite a
chunk of time for Amy to organize her thoughts and type this information, for
which we are grateful.

Very accurately, Amy comments early in her memo that Search engines have
limits and can only go so far to create a connection.etc.  Also, about
how difficult it can be to use Search engines.   Arachne has a Search
capability in connection with our archives at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html

The information about Instagram, Facebook, and Ning, and how to use hashtags
will not be filed in Arachne archives where it can be found.   There will be
subscribers who remember it as early as next week, and be unable to find it.

Therefore, if you all think you will ever need this information, I suggest you
forward a copy, with an appropriate Subject, to your personal file about how
to use your computer and features you have never used before.

Another thank you to all who share.

Following Jane Partridge’s comments below that when the index is done, all you
will have to do is look at the index to see what is exactly in each issue.

I would like to say that as the volunteer who undertakes the indexing of Lace,
I am not behind and would add that I indexed Lace 169 yesterday (I received it
on Thursday) and while it won’t be on the website right away the indexing is
pretty much up to date. However, there will be no way that you can search for
a specific item such as the gold frogged item from the way the current index is
set up as it doesn’t identify everything that is in each article.

We are working on ideas on how to make the index more user friendly with a
search features. We will probably start with making the patterns more easily
searchable. Once the format is decided, then we will be looking for volunteers
to go through back issues to index the magazines in more detail.

[lace] Re: Subject lines for posting/Lace Guild Subscriptions

2018-02-03 Thread Jane Partridge
Sorry for being pedatic, Jeri, but these are not memos, they are postings to
an Internet group!

It can be difficult to remember to change subject lines, particulary since
contributing to Arachne is no longer via steam-driven (or so it seemed, they
were so slow!) desktop computers as it was when I joined, three months into
the list's being. Many of us use our mobile phones, and writing on small
devices sometimes makes it difficult to remember to trim posts, which is
equally important - we hit send and then think "rats" or words to that
effect.

However, help is at hand on this specific point, in that Lace has an online
index, and OK it might be twelve months before the volunteers undertaking the
task catch up (the more volunteers, the quicker the jobs get done) and it will
only take seeing the magazine issue mentioned to be able to go to the Guild's
website and look to see exactly what was in that magazine. That is, provided
a) the Guild can gain enough new members to survive and b) enough volunteers
can be found to keep the index going.

I have raised the question on the Facebook Lacemakers' page, and I will do so
here, but how many realise that electronic subscriptions are now available for
Lace, cutting out the need for expensive overseas postage with one worldwide
subscription rate? Young Lacemaker is to change its title, and go completely
electronic, but for the time being at least Lace is available in both paper
and electronic forms. See www.laceguild.org<http://www.laceguild.org> for
subscription rates. With an increase in membership/subscribers, hopefully The
Lace Guild will survive, without it, I'm sorry to say the future looks
somewhat bleak. Hazel's article in the current magazine makes the situation
clear.

However, I a reminder that if you ever want to got to the Arachne archives to
find information, when you start to write about a specific subject, it would
be nice to remember to attend to changing the subject line to be more
specific.

Example:  6 months from now, will you remember that Lace Magazine #169
contained information about gold and silver laces?  If you have an excellent
memory, you will search for Gil Dye.  And if you are very good at saving
information where you can quickly find it - you will print what she has
written about the frogging panel at Hardwick Hall, and place it in your copy
of her book: Surface Decoration in Silk and Metallic Thread.

Good luck.  I have often asked that Subject Lines get more attention, and
have seen little improvement.  For example, my dismay is with those messages
that are "Sad News" that do not get filed under a deceased lace person's name
in the archives.  Often, I add something to the Subject Line or remove
something vague and replace with something more easy for the Arachne computer
program to file - and then give a reply - so the discussion will get where it
should.

Subject: [lace] "Tribute to Ardoye" war lace

2016-06-08 Thread Karen Thompson
Hi Vickie and other Arachneans,

Great question about the Tribute to Ardoye War Lace:

* I have a construction question about the second piece on the first page
ofthe war laces section. It's a table runner titled "Tribute to Ardoye".
The embroidered emblems surrounded by lace ground on the border of
thispiece appear to have button hole stitch edges. Would they have been
appliquéd using a buttonhole stitch onto a large areaof ground after the
lace was complete or would the ground have been sewn ontothe buttonhole
stitches as the lace border was made?*

I will check next week when I am back at the Smithsonian and let you know.
I am spending a week at the beach making lace and do not have access to any
more images of the laces than you do this week. Instead of answering what I
think it is, I will check before answering.

You can see the War Laces and samples from the Lace collection at

http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/object-groups/world-war-one-laces

http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/object-groups/lace-collection

When you click on Expand in the upper right corner and then View full
record in the lower right you can see more images for some of the laces.
These images can be enlarged on your screen.
Many more will be added to the lace-collection group.

[lace] Proper Subject Lines are Necessary

2015-11-03 Thread Jeriames
Everyone:

Why does this message have a "Help please" subject? Why is it attached to
a lace ID question? Going backwards a few days, why didn't the lace ID
memo have a more specific Subject line in the first place? (I have trimmed
most of the lace ID New Zealand correspondence away, per Avital's (Web
Mistress) requests.

Reminder: It is important to give a Subject line that will attract
attention, and file a memo like this where it can be found in the future in
our
archives. Also, something like "Help please" is so vague that it does not
attract the best experts on Arachne.

Something like "Lace ID Question" and "IOLI NJ Metro Chapter Lace Day
Nov 7 and 8" would be helpful.

I write this as a member of another local lace group in NJ. It is most
important that publicity be distributed in a truly helpful way for Lace
people in the New York City area who may be subscribers to Arachne (Metro
Chapter is one of the closest Lace groups to the city).

Will leave it to Metro Chapter to send us a message with a Subject line
that will attract attention of people throughout the NYC and surrounding area.

This may sound odd, but I wish I had been around in the days when Doris
Southard was teaching at the IOLI conventions! By the time I met Doris in
2002(2) she was 80+ years old and no longer teaching. I do have a photo of
her working on her pillow but didn't have an opportunity to spend much time
watching her make lace. I think it would have been wonderful to have taken a
Tonder class from her! I imagine there are still some lucky people out there
that did have that pleasure!

Speaking of Miss Channer I think it is a safe bet that one of our member's
will be displaying her completed mat in the exhibit room at the IOLI

See you soon!!!

2015-01-30 Thread Susan Vossier
If the thread is coloured: pendants, ear-rings, lace-bugs or butterflies
from Claire Burkhardt's Lace for 10pairs (I have a stash of insects, so
when asked for something to put in the witches' cauldron, or how to hide
holes in a curtain nibbled by grasshoppers, I donate several lace bugs;
what's more, you can mix colours to your heart's delight); if there's
enough thread I may make a bookmark, or use it to try out a new pattern, or
just make a band until the thread runs out. There are so many things to do
with short bands of lace - put it on a pocket, a lavender bag, on a jute
lace-maker's pillow. The real problem is taking the time to do a something
little when you're itching to get onto the next big project, so I have lots
of little ends that go into pin-cushions, but I top them with polyster
filling, because I don't like the only-threads ones!

Subject: Re: [lace] lace style sheet, was lace proof readers

Frequently, it is the person who has studied the language formally who
understands it better than the native speaker!

I agree with this comment. As a native speaker I am not always aware of all
the rules of spelling and grammar as someone who has studied it can be. As a
teacher and author writing about lace subjects I am well aware of the
pitfalls, so are my proof readers including Aurelia herself. I would never
have finished revamping my dictionary without her. She was always picking me
up, and making pointed comments using misinterpretation that had me in
stitches and enlivened my mornings.

When I wrote my dictionary of lacemaking terms I was often asked which was the
correct term when there were several. In my opinion it is not about which is
the correct term. To me words are tools by which we pass on and receive
ideas. What matters is that both the sender and receiver have the same
understanding of the word or phrase. The English language is wide open to
misinterpretation, hence the wonderful episodes when Shakespeare has his
actors playing with them and Aurelia made fun of what would otherwise have
been tedious. As an author and teacher I have to do my best to guard against
misinterpretation, and I use several lacemakers to proofread and try out my
explanations. My thanks to all my helpers. Hopefully we succeed.

Happy lacemaking

Dear Alex,

Is this the famous lace that disappeared (or was stolen)? I'm thinking of
the one that was so valued that notices and very clear photos were put in
various national Lace Guild magazines at the time. And I remember a
detailed article about it If so, how was this resolved?

The other day, I mentioned flipped pillows in a memo about packing books
in a tote bag.

Everyone new to lace, please notice that even one of our most experienced
lace makers has had a pillow mishap - in the photo just below the
Greek-themed lace. Notice how the pillow is set up with attached cover
cloths which
would reduce possible damage. Without, many threads could have broken.

Perhaps there are people who do not know that Noelene's lace poems were

[lace] Cover Cloths (Subject change)

2013-03-16 Thread Jeriames
Dear John Mead,

Welcome to our list. I put aside your letter from the other day, and will
comment on it later as it requires some more thinking time.

A cover cloth is usually a large square of fabric of a size that will
completely cover a bobbin lace pillow. It can be pinned to the pillow with
something like pearl-headed corsage pins from a craft shop.

It becomes double-insurance against tangled bobbins when you are moving a
lace pillow, such as when it is being taken to another table or being put in
a tote bag to be taken to a group meeting or lace-making demonstration
site (historic house, museum, school, etc.). People with inquisitive small
children and pets also find a cover cloth necessary. Most cloths are in
color, but definitely must be color-fast (no dyes that will run when a liquid
is spilled on them, or rub off dye on lace threads), the fabric should be
tightly-woven not a fuzzy material that sheds and can get worked into lace.
Some lace makers embroider their cloths and edge them in lace, but it is
not necessary. When I was around beginning lace makers years ago, I used to
bring a supply of large dinner napkins for the purpose, so they would have
something that did not add to their start-up expenses.

A cover cloth also keeps dust, pet hair, insects, etc. from settling into
your threads and lace equipment when your pillow is not in use. (Though
not recommended, some lace makers put works-in-progress away for a long time!)

Years ago, Arachne had a topic about people walking around a lace
demonstration site looking for pillows that were unattended. Perhaps the
makers
had gone away for lunch, for example. There were sinister types who would
walk around with small scissors in their hands, and snip off interesting
bobbins (antiques, and fancy painted ones with very desirable spangles
(spangles are glass beads that prevent some styles of English bobbins from
rolling
and weight the bobbins, threaded on wires through drilled holes in the
bobbins). Ever since, demonstrators have used pinned-down cover cloths
whenever pillows are left unattended. Hopefully, this dastardly criminal
behavior is no longer practiced.

Spangling is another big topic.

[lace] Silly Questions (another subject change!)

2013-03-16 Thread Jane Partridge
You know, one of the things I like about Arachne is that we *don't* mind
people asking the same question over again, and that the answer to a
simple question like John's might also be the answer to someone else who
is too afraid/shy/embarrassed to ask. That has been a feature of the
list for all of the time it has been going (not that many questions had
been asked when I joined!). Not everyone has time to go searching
through archives for answers that may or may not be there - and I
believe not all messages have been archived.

As we've said before, a question asked more than once over several years
may elicit the same answer, but in some cases, may elicit an importantly
more up-to-date answer - I'm sure Jeri would agree with me that her
method of cleaning lace is not the same as that which was the approved
method 100 years ago, and that sometimes looking up an archived answer
can give the wrong information!

On one of the railway lists I subscribe to, nearly every person who asks
a question gets told to look in the archives... not very helpful when
you want a quick answer, and to be honest, I sometimes find the go and
find out for yourself response off-putting - you thought you were doing
that by asking people who know the answers - so then you daren't ask
anything in case it has been asked before and you will get the same
brush-off.

Hello All! Many thanks Jeri--loved the link to the tatting site. WOW, your

attention right away, along with the mobis shawl. Now that I understand what
to look for, I can check Digital Archives for a simple (!!) square tatting

[lace] Proper Subject Lines for Lace

2012-06-01 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lace Friends, especially Newbies:

We all have had problems trying to identify if a message is legitimate, or
should be deleted without reading. Today there is in my Spam folder a
message from d.haber with no relevant lace Subject -- just hello. Hello
is a classic word used by spammers, instead of giving a real Subject.
Many of us delete all messages with inane Subjects like this, and then the
sender wonders why there were no responses..

May I request that everyone use relevant-to-lace Subject lines, please?

Suggestion: Write your memo, then see what the main Subject is and plug
it in place. Even something like introducing myself as a new member is
better than hello.

Many thanks, Jeri

Dear Arachnids

I have not looked at the pictures of the 'handkerchiefs' but Joan Tyler-Smith
showed me some square handkerchief-like items with circular centres and wide
lace edgings, many of them silk, and she explained they were made to cover the
face of someone who had died. Does anyone know more about this tradition?

Happy lacemaking

Hi Arachnids

Some years ago I had a problem with W H Smith. I told the lady at the checkout
that for environmental reasons I did not wish to have a bag but she insisted
in putting my book into one saying that it was necessary for security as it
would prove I had paid for it. I replied that the receipt was sufficient and
proceeded to take the book out and leave it behind. It was interesting that
there was no such problwem the next time I went there. I wonder why?

Keep reusing bags

2011-12-08 Thread Sue
Good advise as it isn't very wide. I designed this pattern as a square
photoframe for Alice for the Arachne exchange in 2008 I think, and have
since changed it to be this straight strip to try on this pillow. I called
it Alice of course:-) It is working up well and getting me into the swing
of using up the silk threads, finding out all the little things I dont know
yet and even bringing in new threads as I go, at the moment.
We have two of those little glass angels which we bought last december at
our local garden centre which puts up a fabulous christmas display every
year. I bought them because I liked them for our small christmas tree and
when we got them home my DH told me how lovely they would look with some
lace around them, !!! bless him.. LOL. As if I didn't have anything to do
at all. this year I started very early so was all finished during November
and didn't buy anything this year that just needed that extra bit of lace:-)
hense the reason I have time to play and get used to this new pillow I have
only had for 5 or 6 months:-)

It looks like a fairly small roller to me, so definitely try a small

BTW, where did you get the little glass angel that you put the lace skirt

2011-12-06 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Sue,
There was a discussion on Arachne in the past where it was suggested that if
you
intend to do yardage on a roller pillow, that you do not make the pricking fit
exactly, as with each turn of the pillow you will be pricking into the same
holes again. Depending on what your pillow is made of, the pillow may break
down quicker. It was also suggested that the pricking be a little larger and
left free under the roller so that future pinholes will be in different
positions.

I was going to suggest a little open bag at the back of your pillow that you
can
roll the lace and put it into. I remember being given one from England made in
very bright cotton. It was just a length of fabric, probably doubled, folded
almost in half, with about a half inch left over to pin to the back of the
pillow, and sewn together.
Janice

There wasn't room to wrap wool blanket around it, so in the end
I have a thin layer of foam with a couple of layers of cotton fabric pulled
tight around it and the pattern fits beautifully around that.
I am using up the spare left over silk threads left on the bobbins from my
finished garter.

Not only have I concluded from a very interesting discussion that
colored diagrams are not cheating, but in addition to being another tool to
accomplish the task of making lace, they are also a valuable tool for
learning about a type of lace--all depends on one's goals and how the tool is

Subject: Re: [lace] prickings

2011-08-16 Thread Witchy Woman

Read the posts about storing used prickings. Lots of good information.

I, too, like to keep them in the book the pattern came from if possible. I
keep them in plastic page protectors...cut to fit the book if need
be...keeps them from falling out when you open the book.

I've found out the hard way that the ink from regular ball point pens like
Bic tends to fade as the years go by so I make notes in an indelible ink...a
Pentel brand Onyx pen is a good one...fine lines and inexpensive.

If you're going to make any markings on the pricking before you cover it
with clear contact film, a pencil works well. Inks of all kinds seem to
bleed into the contact film after a while.

BTW...if you use the plastic page protectors to store your notes and
prickings, make sure they're made of polypropylene, which is chemically
inert.

Peg,
A suggestion re using pens, etc., may I suggest you invest in some lignin
free pens. You can get them in the scrapbook section of Michaels or Hobby
Lobby. They work great have no acid properties on them as regular pens
have.

Thanks, Sallie. It's good to know where to get those kind of pens other
than a place that sells mail order archival supplies. I'll have to check

Subject: [lace] roller pillows

In 2005 I had a fire at my house and lost all of my lace pillows. About 3
years ago I decided to take it up again and started from
scratch...literally.

My oldest pillow is a homemade roller pillow I take back and forth to work.
It's made of a a scrap of foam insulation board for the base with a small
wooden cigar box (about 3x5) to hold the roller, and the roller made out
of strips of felted wool wrapped around a dowel, pinned and covered with a
layer of cotton to keep the fuzz away from the lace.

For the felted wool I went to the thrift store on 50% off Monday and bought
a thick 100% wool coat for $5.00. (I love thrift stores!!) I threw it in
the washer in hot water and ran it through the cycle twice, then threw it in
a hot dryer for about an hour. It shrank beautifully. I cut the coat into
strips as wide as the dowel and wrapped tightly until it fit in the cigar
box. I drilled 2 small holes in the box and use corsage pins to hold the
roller in place when I'm working.

I've tried other materials for rollers, but I like this type of wool roller
the best. It hasn't broken down and when it does I still have a lot of the
coat left to make another roller.

Each piece of the pattern is actually a graphics file and can be copied. To
get the pattern to fit on a page is to do this...

1. Open a screen in Word. Set the page size to Legal and all margins to
0.5.

2. Go to the screen with the pattern. Put your cursor on one section of the
pattern and right click. Select Copy.

3. Go back to the Word screen and select Paste (or hold the CTRL key down and
hit V to paste). It will automatically fit the pattern to the page.

4. Repeat with each section of the pattern.

Enjoy!

Subject: [lace] Wheel bag

2011-07-23 Thread Witchy Woman
Talk about perfect timing. What a great idea, Tatman

Most of my lacemaking these days is done on my lunch hour, so I carry my
pillow back and forth to work. A bag that will protect it is essential. I'm
working on a Milanese piece that needs to be transferred from my small cookie
pillow to a larger one for the second part of the pattern. Problem is I don't
have a bag big enough for my 22 pillow. Most of the large bags I've seen are
cloth, don't close completely, and way too expensive. I would make one
myself, but my sewing machine is out of commission.

I went on Amazon and ordered the M-Wave bag for $24...with free shipping It
came yesterday. Nicely padded, zips all around. Only thing I would have
liked is a shoulder strap, but that's easily added.

I cut a piece of corrugated cardboard about 4 wide and long enough to go
around the pillow to keep the bag from squishing down on the work. It fits
beautifully.

Thanks for the suggestion.

It isn't foolproof though - for me, it just means that the email goes
into my general inbox rather than being filtered into lace or lace

problem.

I find messages irritating when they are moved from one list to the
other, they invariably end up as duplicate messages in the same box as
both [lace] and [lace-chat] are left in the subject lines!.

However, it looks as if Catherine Hill's address book has been
compromised - the message that did come through with the [lace] prefix

from the address list in the header to have been sent to all and sundry.

Ironic - the one that was genuine appeared not to be so, and the one

Is there anything at BBC America? as I don't have tv, I can't check it myself.

BBC America at the moment seems to have nothing worth watching. For instance
tonight has Star Trek and King Arthur repeated from 2004. I am able to watch
repeats of Larkrise for my English fix once a week, where I once spotted
Queenie
making lace. Not sure what type of lace it was as it was too far away.
Hopefully we will get Edwardian Farm at some stage.

The lace tape looked interesting and I wondered if it was possible to stick it
on some cardstock and use the image to make the lace on top of, but I have
enough patterns I want to do to keep me going for a long time.

Two of the ornaments I made were sold for charity and got at least $10 each. I
was away so not there to up the bidding. :-)

Subject: Re: [lace] bobbins... and now, teaching?

2010-09-27 Thread Janice Blair
I bought the dowel and some long wooden beads years ago with the intent of
using
it to make long bobbins for doing yarn lace. It is on my someday list.

Teaching - well my guild is having it's third class this year for beginners in
November and without any advertising we already have 9 people on the list! The
first class earlier in the year was a success with some new members and the
followup continuing class also included 5 new beginners, 4 of which joined
the
guild. Now we have decided to offer a class on a special day rather than eat
into our guild meeting days. I came up with a new simple pattern this time
that
should be able to be completed easily in the 4 hours this class will have, and
that will include them doing some winding of bobbins and pricking the pattern.
Our guild members help out by sitting alongside the newbies, one-on-one if
possible, and this takes the burden off the person running the class of being
everywhere all at the same time. I am concerned that if we keep growing at
this
rate, we will outgrow our meeting room which is very convenient and economical
for us at present.

I developed an easy bookmark pattern, just uploaded it to the second page of my
arachne webshots album:

http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/album/149126673AmIpMo?start=0

If anyone wants a to proof read my class notes and get the pattern, email me.
The piece uses 7 pairs of bobbins and 35/2 linen thread.

That is incredible! As far as I can tell, all of Bruges Bloomwork designs are
made up of a stock set of motifs with variations. And each piece is just a
different selection of motifs and arrangements of motifs. So you are
designing Bloomwork just the way it is always designed (except for the
computer and PhotoShop).

2010-08-22 Thread Chris Brill-Packard
Hello Everyone,   I would like to add to Devons questions and comments.

1.
How dramatically have enrollments of young people, say under 20 fallen
in
recent years?
I did a FREE intro to bobbin lace at a public library during
July where they had
monies donated from volunteers to
promote special programs to the public at the
library.   They created full
color table tent displays and posters for the
library and other public
buildings in their city and did advertising.

I had placed a maximum number
on it of 10 but the librarian to my surprise
called the night before the
class and stated I hope you do not mind but I added
some more students -
total is 21  YIKES...some calls to a fellow group member -
lots of bobbin
winding, more pillows and I then had enough to do 11 pillows
since I was
going to need to pair up all of the mothers and daughters
enrollees.  Ages
10 -14 for the younger girls, I had 2 college gals (one a NY
city fashion
design student) and their mothers - mainly 30s.

The girls and the college
students went to town on the lacelove it.  After
3 hours, everyone
asked to continue - the library room was available on the
Sunday afternoons
and we scheduled two more Sundays of FREE lace lessons.
After 3 classes, I
asked if anyone would like to continue with lessons  - the
girls said YES but
the MOTHERS said NO to their girls stating that with school
they had TOO MANY
extra activities already and that they were not going to drive
them to one
more class.   I was so frustrated to hear this since I had many
doing so well
and they were interested!

2.  How many have tried Girl Scouts or
similar organizations since they need
to learn badges?  Would this work?
3. I have taught at a summer church camp on one day with a total of 42 kids
exposed to lace/weaving techniques - the boys were great at it.   One boy did
10
inches of a tape lace and did not want to quit.  He laced with me all day
that
day.   Has anyone tried summer church camps?

4.  I found bobbin
lace at a community college at a Fiber and Art exhibit for
the public.
The bobbin lace display was 8 different pillows with 8 different
laces in
program and it was described as weaving threads for the fiber section
of
the exhibit.   Has anyone tried that?    I learned at age 25 after college
but continued ever since.   Lace is my relaxation!

Subject: [lace] Lacemakers in Arizona

2010-06-23 Thread Janice Blair
I didn't spot any lacemakers in Arizona on the map but do know there is an
active lace guild over there as one of our members from Illinois joined a
guild. I believe it was the Lacey Ladies of Arizona. There is one lady listed
in the IOLI directory and I will forward your email to her and hope she
contacts you.

Subject: [lace] The Tudors - costumes

2010-03-21 Thread Bridget Marrow
Any lace, except for the most primitive, is anachronistic for the Henry VIII
period. Reticella was just beginning in Italy, but there is no evidence for it
reaching England this early.

The costumes for The Tudors are pure fantasy - like the series itself.
Historical accuracy just doesn't come into it. Enjoy it for the sexy romp it
is, but please don't confuse it with History!

Subject: Re: [lace] Flanders

2009-12-04 Thread Janice Blair
I'm with you Devon. I use marker pins if necessary and I work with the diagram
pinned to a 1 inch thick flat piece of polystyrene that I kept from packing in
a box. I bound the edges that were rough with sticky backed tape so that the
diagram sheet would not shed little balls of plastic. I'm having a senior
moment and can't remember the name of the tape but it was used effectively by
McGyver on tv. I also use the sticky arrows to keep my place marked on the
diagram.

I think it must have been quiet over the thanksgiving holiday. This last
digest took two days to arrive from the first message to the last, but the
previous one took a week of messages before it was relayed to us.

I was getting mail about the CRB on lace chat which I get reflected but had no
idea what it meant until I got this latest digest.

Re: Subject: Re: [lace] Flanders

2009-12-04 Thread bev walker
Hi Janice and everyone

Duct tape?

At Sally's Binche workshop this summer (at IOLI) I learned to colour in
sections of my diagram-copy with the colours of the Belgian code, as
approriate. V. helpful as an aide memoire. At home now I colour in the
pricking as well (I need all the aide memoire I can get :p )

I use what someone called a voodoo board to pin where I am, the diagram-copy
on a piece of styro, or if the styro isn't available, I just pin into a
double layer of paper and *as well* I use Clay's tip of removeable arrows in
several colours to locate where I need to be at a given section.

The thing about Binche and Flanders in the areas of motif, is the passive
can become weaver any place necessary to help fill the space; an outline
thread helps define or perhaps corral is a better word, corral the
passive/weaver movements within the shape.
For Lorelei - there are areas of a given pattern that repeat a pathway to
fill in a shape, but we don't have stitch distinctions for the cloth stitch
areas as such, you just use what works to fill in the space and have the
pairs entering and leaving in a logical manner to the lace as a whole, for
any given pattern.

To learn Binche is to dive right in, eyes to the diagram :D

Hi Francis,
I have taken bamboo knitting needles on transatlantic flights from the US and
had no problem.  You can also use them within the US but not on flights from
Canada.  I think you can even use metal ones in the US but as advised, better
to check with your airline.  I also would run a spare thread through my
stitches just in case my needles got taken away.  Hate to lose my stitches.
