Re: Spindle drive

2021-11-28 Thread M.W.Foscue
Tim,
Very nice.
How did you get that very clean looking large hole in the steel plate?
Did your brother do it for you?
Where did you get the steel plate?   Cost?
Cheers!

Same motor just looks bigger because its back further. We have to go with what
we can get

There is nearly always a motor on ebay its just how much you want to pay its
over for me know postage cost is impossible to me now. $70 postage for a $5
magazine finished it for me

With the technology ever improving I bet there will be a material for the
printer out there someday where we will be able to print the entire chuck

Wow that is incredible.

Yes the 3d is the new wave. I saw parts yesterday that were 3D printed of a
1918 tractor then they made

castings from them . Its cool

2021-11-28 Thread 'Curt George' via Legacy Ornamental Mills
You guys, Make me want to go back and build another Legacy toy.  I'm thinking
something small this time. Something like the Legacy model 200, but with 1000ex
/ normal sized gears, and linear rail.  I've always liked the 200's floating Z
axis. and I think the Y movement 1" on either side of 0, should do nicely. And
Tim I will be using a 5/8" shaft and ball bearings on the headstock. and I have
not yet figured out what I want to do with the tailstock, Yet...
I will start after Christmas.  (I need to save my money!) ;-)

I cant wait to see it when its done! looks Great!!!

I still think you should make your own head and tailstock For you Hybrid, Tim.

Use a 5/8 shaft, then all your Shop Smith adaptors will fit it. The 5/8" shaft
is smaller so ball bearings and everything will work with in the framework you
have.

I was just thinking, the tail stock, would not be that much harder to make,
You could do as Joe did. (That's one slick tailstock!)

No matter what I suggest. Just keep on going Tim. what you've done so far is
Awesome! Keep up the good work.

Hello again Jeff

Your 900 can turn a 8' post if you only turn 4' at a time. It will take some
slight modifications, like removing your tailstock on the legacy and using some
time of object to hold the end of your stock.

I small hole in the wall in my garage did it first, to hold my live center.

Then latter I extended my rails.

Mike added another lathe tail stock to his Wood Chuck.

I have a goal of being able to do 8’ posts in the future (not on my stock 900)
but a 15’ post must be a sight to behold and a real bear to move around. I am
not familiar with the previous generation models and their compatibility with
the newer manual / driven mills. I am not sure what generation to call these

came out with yet another model / package to offer.

The Wood Chuck in the picture has one very important mod that was made by the
owner. He took the 1 X 2 steel rail off the front and replaced it with a 2 X 2
That I am sure helped with a lot of the sway that would turn up in the big
bladed cuts. The next model after the wood chuck was the Steely as we call
them. They used square galvanized tubes to add strength. I still use my
Woodchuck because I can do a lot more in the way of modifications when the
center points are raised and not trapped between rails. I have done 15 foot

Bone Turning, I have turned some deer antler pens upon request which were well

Lookout for used mills: I am always on the lookout for parts and accessories

Hey Jeff

I think you will find a few Shop Smith users here in our group.

Legacy for some reason stopped making Legacy's with removeable tailstock
adaptors.

The tailstock can be modified to hole a MT2 adaptor, but it will take some
machining on a steel lathe to make it work. Here is a photo of mine.

What you see in the photos is a MT2 adaptor with a hole at the end, the
DeStayCo clamp male adaptor is just held in place with a set screw. the plastic
bushing and clamp are the only things that hold it in place.

Another approach is one of our members (Joe) bought a amazon tail stock.
(something like this one ,
https://www.amazon.com/Tailstock-Woodworking-Engraving-Milling-Machine/dp/B07RRG2YFK/ref=sr_1_38?crid=3DX2G6NS62BPF

=lathe+tailstock=1638151454=lathe+tail%2Caps%2C193=8-38
and re-worked his Legacy using it.)

A third (no name.) just made a live center and mounted it over the Legacy's
dead center.

Or do as I did on my Pedal lathe. I ground down the dead center, and tapped it
1/2 24(? fine threads) and mounted a Shop Smith live center on the threaded
shaft.

Have a good night.

Thanks again Curt, yes that makes sense and is pretty creative use of a hole in
the garage wall. Lol

Even with my limited use, a live center is definitely an upgrade I see a need
for on the Legacy. I will have to check compatibility with the shopsmith I
have. I use that as a lathe from time to time but mainly just pens.

I definitely wish I had joined this group moons ago.

Saw your note recommending a spindle drive for the LoM. How do you add a drive
motor to the 1200. Before I moved I had a lathe with a 3 jar chuck. I ordered a
new hub from legacy and simply moved my work to the lathe with the hub for

I cant wait to see it when its done! looks Great!!!  I still think you should
make your own head and tailstock For you Hybrid, Tim.Use a 5/8 shaft, then all
your Shop Smith adaptors will fit it. The 5/8" shaft is smaller so ball
bearings and everything will work with in the framework you have.I was just
thinking, the tail stock, would not be that much harder to make,  You could do
as Joe did.  (That's one slick tailstock!)No matter what I suggest. Just keep

Nice Tim a small note don’t forget to leave enough room for table nuts to be
added or removed you never know when you might have to add them to the mill

Saw your note recommending a spindle drive for the LoM. How do you add a drive
motor to the 1200. Before I moved I had a lathe with a 3 jar chuck. I ordered a

sanding and other details. A spindle drive motor wound be very useful. I
checked the archives but I didn’t see anything about a spindle drive

Hey Stranger great to here from you Mike.

I keep it. I found another only 10 miles from me but not sure if he's
willing to
part with it. Drive and all just like mine.

Re: New member introduction

2021-11-28 Thread Tim Ziegler
Thanks Jeff,

Yes I had to search for a rotary table too and found one on the Router
Forum I belong too.
However trying to get any response on there is like pulling teeth. Like
Curt says "Crickets"
I'd have to check the miles on that one. Wow.
But I sent my kids all the way to Texas for my first LOM, my Wood Chuck was
in my back door.
then Wisconsin for one, and finally South Dakota for the last one nice 1200
that I'm making into
a REVO HYBRID. I'll be posting more on that here in a while. Its a shorten
up 1200 but will have
2 different area's to turn. In front like the Revo and in the middle like
the basic LOM's are.
I put a drive on it today so its a work in progress. I had to rob peter to
pay paul on that one.
So enough on me and my bad habits lol.
We are looking forward to your progress and if I recall someone out there
does have a rotary table for sale.

I ground down the dead center, and tapped it
1/2 24(? fine threads) and mounted a Shop Smith live center on the threaded
shaft.

When there is a will, There is Always a way!

Have a good night.

I am not sure what generation to call these
since Legacy improved something it seemed almost every year for a while and
came out with yet another model / package to offer.

I have done 15 foot
posts and table bases with a diameter of 25" All the way down to roping a tooth
pick. Welcome to the group that does not accept "limitations"

Also if you hold the work in a chuck and the other end in a steady rest you can
do it all in just the mill . do half then end for end and do the second half

Mike added another lathe tail stock to his Wood Chuck.

but a 15’ post must be a sight to behold and a real bear to move around. I am
not familiar with the previous generation models and their compatibility with
the newer manual / driven mills. I am not sure what generation to call these

Re: New member introduction

2021-11-28 Thread Jeff Richmond
Hi Curt,

My 900 is a manual model with the hand crank. It did pretty well for me on
candlesticks and canes gifts back then but I am hoping to expand my project
range. I haven't performed any modifications to the machine yet but may
consider it.

The links you provided will be very helpful. I haven’t used the machine in
quite a while so I have been going over my old information and also found a few
YouTube videos. I can’t watch my old Legacy VHS tapes right now, it seems that
the player was packed away a little too good when I moved a couple years ago.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the links Curt, I will have to check those out.

I have a 900 manual model which I purchased back in the early /mid 2000’s after
seeing it demo at a woodworking show and used it for a few small projects /
gifts. With the cost and it only being a hobby with a young family at the time,
I have only a few accessories but still never really stretched the machines
capabilities with my early efforts. Figured it was finally time to dust it off
and make chips fly again.

 Hello Jeff
Welcome to the group.
What modal Legacy do you own?
Hopefully we will have a video collection of training videos for the group to
watch. ( A project in the works. But sadly I have not idea when this will
happen.) But at this time You tube has a number of them.  Mike Pung has a few
and so dose Bill.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHgzEKnON-o  These two videos are good, Mike
has some others...

https://www.youtube.com/user/aussiman77181  there are more then a few no bills
site.

Have a good day.

Bone Turning, I have turned some deer antler pens upon request which were well
seasoned (dry) but there was a distinct smell like burnt skin / fingernail
during the process. They came out well but it is not a medium I prefer to focus

Lookout for used mills: I am always on the lookout for parts and accessories
for my mill as I am sure most of you are. I do not need another (at least that
what I have to keep telling myself) but in my searching, I did bump into this
one if anyone wants to expand their capability. It is a little older but it
appears to have a variety of gears as well as the manuals and instructional

Great I'm glad it was beneficial to you. I think it was a huge gain
for WoodPecker to add turning wood and frequently have some good sales.
WoodPecker rocks.
