You have no control over the Legacy use of 'Mapping' or 'Master
Location' using Bing! Legacy controls that. It is hard coded. It is the
service Legacy uses.

The Launch tab, in Options, from the help file, quoteLegacy offers
to start your web browser, word processor, or text editor to view web
pages or reports that you have generated. Normally, the default program

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with using Master Location List

2012-03-19 Thread Brian/Support
Microsoft Bing is the mapping application/web site used by Legacy, it is
not a web browser.

Before you complain further, all the internal to Legacy web browsing
such as going to the Bing website in mapping and the links on the Legacy
Home tab use parts of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) which are
built-in to Windows. If you open a link as a new window from the Legacy
Home tab it will be opened in IE because you are starting from IE on the
Home Tab.

The functions which open a Web Browser outside of Legacy such as
Internet Search Internet for current person will use your preferred
browser or the browser you specify in the Launch tab of Options Customize.

I have not noticed any problems in Legacy with my use of question marks. Some
of us prefer not to use a bunch of blanks or unknowns, so we include the
spouse's name like Sally ? (Wife of John Jones). Again, a matter of personal
preference. However, a sheme with codes would never work for sharing info, you
are right about that. Jerry

Howard,

I usually never convey anything negative; so either it's my head cold or the
fact I've just turned 50, I'm afraid I just don't get it. The last part looked
like something from an Einstein manuscript. He I understood - crystal clear -
your explanation left me scratching my head.

As far as placing question marks in the name I consider a no no and do not
subscribe to such a practice. If the name is unknown (any part of it) I leave
it blank - period - if there's nothing there, you know straight off that you
don't have that information.

Secondly, Legacy will balk when it catches a name field with a ? in it. This is
in the standardisation tips.

Kind Regards

I handle things similarly, but over the years have found a need for
 unique
identifiers for unknown persons and a guesstimate for their year of
 birth.
This is the system I use - for what it is worth. As names become known
their bbb identifier can be recycled and so far I have not needed
 more
than the 18278 unknown individuals available using this three letter
 identification system.

 CONVENTIONS FOR UNKNOWN NAME ENTRY

Unknown First Name: enter ?am for a male, ?af for a female, ?au
 sex
 unknown.

Unknown Last Name: enter ??abbb where a in both first and last
 names
is a single capital letter code giving the approximate 33 year span (a
generation) for the estimated year of birth. The century and codes
 follow:
  YearsCodes YearsCodes
   1200-1299 A,B,C 1600-1699 M,N,O
   1300-1399 D,E,F 1700-1799 P,Q,R
   1400-1499 G,H,I 1800-1899 S,T,U
   1500-1599 J,K,L 1900-1999 V,W,X
2000-2067 Y,Z

bbb is an entry sequence code that starts with a through z, then
 aa
through az, ba to bz etc. An example using a female with unknown
first name, born about 1750, who is the 54th person with unknown last
 name
would be entered as ?Qf ??Qbc.

Formula for arriving at date code for b.(birth) to use with unknown
 name is:
 1. Use b. if known
 2. Use b. of spouse, or spouse of spouse (other wife etc.)
 3. Use first m.-25
 4. Use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent
 5. For bp use bc-33 where bc=b. of child in next generation
For bc use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent in previous generation
 6. Use d.-65
 8. Use dp-32 where dp=d. of parent
 9. Use mc-53 where mc=m. of child
   10. Use 33 years per generation from any known date.

My personal solution at this time is to name the source something like 1920 US

Any suggestions?

part of the Jurisdiction City? If not where do you enter that information?

[LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative Duplexing Issue

2012-03-19 Thread Rita Lynn McKale
I just printed a Descendant Narrative. I have a printer that will print on
both sides so under Report Options and Page Setup I clicked Double-sided
(vertical). The report printed fine but the Title page printed on the back
of the last page and the Table of Contents printed on the left facing page
(my paper has the holes pre punched).

Also is there a place to set the margins so the wider margin is on the bound
side?

Thanks,

[LegacyUG] Dropbox and Legacy

2012-03-19 Thread Keith Allred
I have just downloaded dropbox and installed it on my desktop and laptop
computers.  I have been using Legacy for some time and have many pictures that
are located in my pictures folder in legacy.  I have created numerous links
which link pictures to various individuals in legacy.  Each link creates a link
with a given path designation (in my case, Legacy/pictures/).  When I
created my dropbox folder, I dragged and dropped the Legacy/pictures folder to
my dropbox.  So far, OK.  I then used dropbox on my laptop to download the
pictures file in that is in my dropbox folder on my desktop.  But, how do I am
I now able to use all of the links that I have previously created?  If, on the
laptop, I go in Legacy to Options, Customize, Locations and then change the
location of my pictures folder to my dropbox on my laptop, all of the links are
useless.  (I know that if I had started out using my dropbox folder as my
folder to which my pictures were
linked, all would be fine.  But, I now have thousands of links and do not want
to reinvent the world.)  Or do I have each time to download what is in my
dropbox to the Legacy/pictures folder to be able to use the links.  A simple
way to solve the problem would be to have the dropbox folder and
the Legacy/pictures folder sinc each time a change is made to the
Legacy/Pictures folder.   What is the solution to my problem?

[LegacyUG] 1930 US census

2012-03-19 Thread Tony Rolfe
Thanks to all who have offered suggestions so far. I think I will
continue to be a lumper and make one source for each year and put the
State and County in the detail.

A follow-up question for those who have a census event. Do you have the
same Census event for all censuses, or do you have different events
for each, e.g 1900 US Census, 1881 British Census?

At the moment, since I only have British censuses, I've just used one
census event and used the date field to distinguish between them. I'm
wondering whether it is worth having one US Census event or whether
the location will be enough?

More thoughts, please

Subject: [LegacyUG] Pre-1850 US Census data

I am sure most  all USA researchers know that for census records prior to
1850, the only individual identified by name is the head of household.
Other family members are only specified by approximate age and the number of
people in that age range.Â

So my question is:  if you are fairly certain that a female in the 1840
census in an age range  is the same as the spouse specified in the 1850 census
and the ages are consistent, do you record that 1840 census record in the
spouse record?

Obviously since you cannot be certain of that fact, what do you do?  I am
curious as to other people's opinion.

Re: [LegacyUG] 1930 US census

2012-03-19 Thread Terri Brown
One census event. In the Description field I identify US Federal or British.
The date I use is the actual enumeration date but just the year would be fine
if that is all you want. The Place field is, obviously, the city or township,
county and state of enumeration. In the Notes field I record the pertinent
information from the census.
The Event Definition is set up like so:

[HeShe] appeared on the [Desc] census [onDate] [inPlace].[Sources] [Notes]

So I end up with a sentence like this:

He appeared on the U. S. Federal census on 10 April 1930 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga
County, Ohio, USA. [Followed by information transcribed from the census]

This way the Event works for any country's census (or state census).

Re: [LegacyUG] Pre-1850 US Census data

2012-03-19 Thread Paula Ryburn
I do not do exactly the same as Michele and Terri ;) but I am now considering
it.

I agree with the earlier Ouji board comment on those early censuses. ;)

One thing I do differently, that hasn't been mentioned, is I will enter the
Census as a Marriage Event if the couple is enumerated together. So, for the
specific original question about adding an event for the spouse if you're
reasonably sure that tick mark is her. I would add the Marriage Event
and describe that the wife is represented by the such-and-such tick mark. (I
tend to enter an event for each child, tho.)

Being a semi-retired analyst, I LOVE looking at a family unit through
consecutive old census listings and trying to figure out the estimated birth
ranges, who married out, etc. I have a pretty strong hypothesis on the older
siblings and younger half-siblings of my 3rd-great-grandfather! ;) (Obviously,
this is one reason I love this hobby.)

It was changed to United States because that's the standard for
submitting data to the newFamilySearch site. The programmer changed
the way the country is returned when you use the Geo Location
Database. We need to comply with their standards for not only the LDS
users but anyone who wishes to contribute to that database.

You can always change it back by going to the Master Location List and
