[LegacyUG] Contact with Legacy Sales
On December 30 last I ordered and paid for a copy of The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree - PDF edition. I have not received a password and so am unable to unlock the download. I contacted Legacy Sales and received a ticket number and the promise of a timely reply. Despite repeated emails including the ticket number it is now over a month and I have received no reply. Re: [LegacyUG] Examples of marriage events?
I'll add that, like some others, I use the Marriage Events to record anything that related to the couple, rather than the individual. For example, I record the census under marriage when a couple appear together. Scott On Tue, Mar 20, 2012 at 5:51 PM, Jan Roberts poo...@ozemail.com.au wrote: I add anything that happened to the family (as a whole, or part of e.g. mum and son, dad and three out of four children, mum and dad, the three siblings) - some examples are group photos, a family holiday, a census event. If, for arguments sake, I had a photo of a child's graduation and mum and dad are in the photo with the child I would add this as an event for the child, not the family - however, if it was a group photo take at a picnic I would include it as a marriage (read 'family') event because it isn't specific to any one person. If I find a census entry for one of the children on his / her own, they would get an individual event - but if the rest of the family was together at a different location that entry would still be a family / marriage event. I have also changed the wording for reports to something like The following involved [couplenames] and / or their children. [LegacyUG] Call me stupid but
I am still trying to get the WWI draft registration citation correct. I am using the correct template now. In the last detail box where you put citing. It still won't format correct because in Evidence Explained part of that particular field is supposed to be in italics. Of course Legacy can't just italicize part of the field because it doesn't know which part so it doesn't italicize any of it. I will have to override that part. However, my bigger problem is this. Evidence explained wants the serial number and the order number (and that is written in the instructions inside the box in Legacy). I am looking at a draft card (version A from the first draft). There are FOUR numbers written on this card. Upper left corner right next to Form 1 is the number 89 (there is no blank for this, it is just written off to the side). At the upper right corner it does have a blank. The blank is labeled No. and 6 is written there. On the back the number 23-2-24-A is stamped that the top and 268 is stamped at the bottom. I haven't a clue which is the serial number, which is the order number and what the other two numbers represent. The citation also calls for the Draft Board number but I don't see that at all. It has Precinct - Purvis City or County - Lamar State - Miss Help? michele Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). RE: [LegacyUG] Location quandaries
Jane, 1) I explain it in the notes. If I am pretty sure that someone got married in Perry Co, MS (no marriage records before 1877 because the courthouse burned) then I will put , Perry, Mississippi, United States And then in the marriage notes I write something like... Both John and Mary were living in Perry County for the 1840 census in the households of their parents. In 1850 they were enumerated together in Perry County. The Perry County courthouse burned in 1877 and there are no marriage records prior to that date survived. The marriage records of the neighboring counties (Marion, Hancock, Jackson, Covington and Jones) were checked with negative results. The neighboring counties of Wayne and Greene also suffered complete records losses for this time period and could not be checked. It is most likely they married in Perry County. Their first child was born 04 Sep 1848 which puts their marriage date about 1847. John would have been 21 and Mary would have been 18 at the time of their marriage 2) In the master source list, hit options, then hit purge unused and that should get rid of your source that is nothing but a period. 3) If it is a true township then I put: Purvis Township, Lamar, Mississippi, United States (Purvis isn't really a township but I couldn't think of one right off the top of my head) 4) It takes a long time to correct entries :) :) :) michele From: sarlesinsi...@gmail.com [mailto:sarlesinsi...@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 9:18 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Location quandaries If I have a probable location, how do others input such a thing? RE: [LegacyUG] Examples of marriage events?
Except that the joint residence under the marriage section *only* prints when Marriage Events is ticked in the report options. And to print an individual report, there is no place to turn on Print Marriage Events--so you would not see these residences or anything having to do with that individuals marriage. I guess I can see the point of putting the joint residence but it sure would be nice if it printed, even in an individual report. Re: [LegacyUG] Location quandaries
1) If a locaton in the master locations list is no longer connected with any record in the database, then you can use OptionsPurge Unused to remove all of them at once or use OptionsDelete to remove just the one that is highlighted. Either method should work to get rid of the location you mentioned. 2) Probably (not Probable) is a valid preposition. (I call them location modifiers like near, from, of, ...because many of them are not actually prepositions) Read more about them in the help file Prepositions on Location. I had to add Probably to my file. Note also in the help file Sort Location List where the two check boxes at the bottom of the sort tool are documented. They are very useful when viewing locations. 3) You might try the Geo-code button for fixing multiple locations. That button will show at the top of the master locations list if you have checked the box Show Map then click Geo-code all un-resolved locations through Bing Maps. Legacy has a glitch in how the Bing Maps are linked (I think I have reported it in the past but it is still now fixed.) The Bing Maps do not show when you first click Show Map but if you go to the Family view tab and then click on the Mapping tool icon, it usually will show the map of locations found on that family group. Then look at the master location list again and the map will show. I wish that there were a Geo-code all un-resolved locations through the Geo database. A location that has been retrieved from Bing Maps will show V in the L column and if retrieved from the geo database will show an L. If you lookup a location in the geo database that already has V, the program will not replace the V with an L although it does get the rest of the fields from the geo database. If you lookup a location in Bing Maps that already has L, the program does replace the L with a V. I wish it were consistent. Also, I'm not certain if the program considers an L location as already resolved when it tries to Geo-code all un-resolved locations. At one time, I had thousands of locations verfied with the geo database but now very few of them show L and most of them show V. It would be good if the one did not override the other without at least a question. Good luck getting your locations cleaned up. Re: [LegacyUG] Location defaults changed
Mike, I usually do read the thread, to know if the specifics of the topic affect or interest me and to determine if I would like to post a reply or question. I did read the thread this time, too. The programmer changed the way the country is returned when you use the Geo Location Database. (Sherry) This statement would imply that a change is made whenever you invoke the Geo Location db. Re: [LegacyUG] Location quandaries
Also keep in mind that if you have a few entries that include misspellings or jumbled info you can combine them to be the correct one (huge time-saver). I went through this process of standardizing my locations, did not really take that long because I worked in the master list - saw who was in any location and that helped me with the combinations. Also got rid of all locations not in use, made sure the long form and the short form were to my liking (I use USA and will continue to do so). Now that it is clean, once a month I take a quick look through (scrolling) to clean up any little mistakes from the previous month. I pretty much have it down now. No worries - much like the master sources (which I also cleaned up) it was a project that I worked on for a set amount of time each day - took a few weeks - and now my database is pretty clean. Best of luck. Of course Legacy can’t just italicize part of the field because it doesn’t know which part so it doesn’t italicize any of it. The blank is labeled “No.” and 6 is written there. On the back the number 23-2-24-A is stamped that the top and 268 is stamped at the bottom. I haven’t a clue which is the serial number, which is the order number and what the other two numbers represent. The citation also calls for the Draft Board number but I don’t see that at all. Am I missing something? When I type in "598" I get the choice of three templates, but none of them actually assist in the wording below, or even truly match the fields to what EE says to use. You still have to enter the citation information details on your own, which means you have to be very careful to match the wording you've used previously. YES, Marianne! That is my point. I wish the template had all the mandatory stuff in the source part of the citation so that the detail would be easy. Michele Am I missing something? When I type in 598 I get the choice of three templates, but none of them actually assist in the wording below, or even truly match the fields to what EE says to use. You still have to enter the citation information details on your own, which means you have to be very careful to match the wording you've used previously. At least for now, could you Save the perfected citation as a source clipboard? Then when you have another WWI draft registration to cite, you could Load that one and replace the name and various numbers in the same place in that Item of Interest field? As well as if you used the Text or Comment fields to help perfect the citation... or even the over-rides... aren't those saved in the Source Clipboard, too? OR if you use this method, maybe make a citation that has a more generic [NAME], [CARD NO.], [DATE SIGNED]... in the Item of Interest field, and Save THAT one. When the GeoDb gives you the location name in the Core and Core+ sections for you to select United States will be part of the name. The clipboard itself can only hold one citation at a time. You can however save up to 10 clipboards. Since you control those 10 saved clipboards the WWI Draft clipboard with the perfect wording will only be overwritten if you save another clipboard to replace it. To save a clipboard open the clipboard and use the save button. To recall a saved clipboard use the load button. [LegacyUG] Notes formatting
Many times when you GEDCOM in data from another genealogy program the notes field will not end with the appropriate period (.). Some programs automatically add a period at the end of a note when generating output reports. Legacy does not do this. One can go into the sentence definitions edit and add the period after the notes field. However for notes that do contain the period this would result in two periods at the end of the sentence. I don't _think_ it would be very difficult to have the option of adding a period when one is not present in the original note. Obviously I could be wrong here about the difficulty of doing this but I do strongly feel this is highly desirable. Perhaps an optional feature to add a period could be considered much like the existing option concerning spaces following commas in all location fields. The enforced period would make narrative reports so much easier to read! Neil Bell ( a retired programmer!) Re: [LegacyUG] Examples of marriage events?
One event that I add to the Marriage Information screen is any newspaper article which mentions the wedding. Some articles go into a great deal of detail and describe who was in the wedding party, the names of the parents of the wedding couple, and even what they wore on the day. I've also included newspaper articles here of the engagement party held prior to the wedding. Additionally, if there is a newspaper article about the couples' subsequent divorce, again I add a newspaper event here containing the article. Here's the wording for my newspaper event on the Marriage Information screen: [CoupleFirstNames] were mentioned in an article in «i»[Desc]«/i» published [onDate] [inPlace]. I'm a long time Legacy user but have never, ever added an Event in the Marriage Information section. I would like to know some examples of what could/should be added there? Maybe I'm adding some of my information to the individual when it actually should be an Event in the Marriage section. I don't know. I think I'm asking this because I started seeing discussions about some people adding the Census Event under the Marriage section (although I still need to wrap my head around that idea and why I should do it.) Michele - After your original note on this subject last night I went back and notices the same italics problem - and also had the same problems deciphering where number was which. However as far as the Draft Board - if you are using the Ancestry version of the cards, the Draft board number is included in its sourcing material. Of course, I should tell you than on the one I was working on, it was 0 Draft Board, which also left me a bit perplexed. I am using the correct template now. In the last detail box where you put “citing…” It still won't format correct because in Evidence Explained part of that particular field is supposed to be in italics. The blank is labeled “No.” and 6 is written there. On the back the number 23-2-24-A is stamped that the top and 268 is stamped at the bottom. I haven'ta clue which is the serial number, which is the order number and what the other two numbers represent. The citation also calls for the Draft Board number but I don't see that at all. Are you saying that by listing residence as a marriage event, you only have to enter it once since the event goes with each person's marriage record? Up to now, I had considered residence as belonging with the individual, so always listed it separately. I am aware that so doing means that they do not appear in Individual Reports, but this I have always regarded as a Legacy fault/bug, and will continue to have my married people living together, at least for as long as they actually do! Anything related to the marriage and/or couple. Honeymoon would be a good one g. Until the programmers can add the Marriage Picture to reports, you could create an event for the wedding picture you wnat to include on reports or web pages. Also, you can use the Marriage Events to record Marriage Banns, license, notice, pre-nups or other contract, residences of the couple, alt. marriage dates or locations (when you find a conflict - don't forget to create a To-Do to search for the correct info) You could also include any separation information if the marriage fails - divorce, etc. Sincerely, Sherry Technical Support Legacy Family Tree No virus found in this message. It’s just what I have decided to do. There are probably no advantages or disadvantages to doing either one. I tried doing that and it still doesn't print in italics - anyone have any tips? Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2012 18:53:39 -0400 From: chorn0...@optimum.net Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Examples of marriage events? To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Yes, I get the name of the publication italicized when I use the small brackets in my event template for the Description. Copy and paste the ones in my email below and see if it copies over. Re: [LegacyUG] Location quandaries
Jane: Ron's solution for the change to location prepositions would be a good option but I'm not sure how it would be handled by GEDCOMs or at any sites where you might post. I sometimes use [probably] in the location field itself such as Sweden [probably] when I need to include some sort of a hint. I also occasionally use it when I'm pretty sure of an approximate location but don't yet have proof such as Wentworth County [probably], Upper Canada. Putting [probably] *after* the city, county, etc. causes it to still sort with similar locations. Kirsten -Original Message- From: Ron Taylor Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 7:45 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Location quandaries 1) If a locaton in the master locations list is no longer connected with any record in the database, then you can use OptionsPurge Unused to remove all of them at once or use OptionsDelete to remove just the one that is highlighted. (Wonder about where to put township - in place of town?) Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to correct all those entries in efficient fashion?
