This sounds suspiciously as though you've inadvertently changed the background and/or foreground colours for the current person. Go to the Colours tab in the Customise window and press the big button. Then, click on the button labelled 'Default' in the bottom right. This should restore things to how they were before any changes were made. You may have to re-do the 'Contents' and/or 'Contents back' in order for the presence of sources to show up again. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Thanks for the input everyone! Jenny, I like the way the reports read using the Quoted Given Name and will join you and Virginia in adapting this style for Concettina/Clara. I know this information to be factual as I knew this individual myself and we discussed this issue as it relates to the genealogy file in our family tree. I have kept to the practice of entering the name that appears on the person's birth record in their individual record. All other names have been entered in the AKA file. In this case, I am wondering if I should make an exception for the sake of clarity when printing out the family tree, or if some sort of note should be make (what/where?) Any thoughts on this? I would use a Quoted Given Name - ie, enter her forename as Concettina Clara on her Individual's Information page. When printing Reports select the Format tab on Report Options and tick the boxes for Use quoted names for narratives and Remove quoted given names. By making those selections you will make Clara's entry in Reports read something like Concettina Doe, daughter of X and Y She was usually known as Clara Clara married ... and so on. Pat, It may be a problem with your PC, but could also be a problem with your Legacy installation. If the latter has become corrupt, and to be honest, unless you have recently installed another program which may have corrupted it, I cannot quite see how, then if closing down and rebooting doesn’t help you you may find reinstallation of Legacy will help. This thread is regarding something that I never did quite understand when I first noticed it in moving from PAF to AQ and Legacy! I'm not a professional just a dedicated family historian/genealogist of less than 10 years and it has confused me on more than one occasion where the programs have a section for the actual text or transcript of the document in both the source details screen and the citation screen! In importing from PAF to both AQ and Legacy all of my sources with transcripts of the text all imported the text into the source details page. I encountered a corrupted database issue with Legacy that the programmers couldn't figure out so I stuck with AQ and like Legacy it had all my imported text was at the source field which made sense to me, at least, since this the field that defines the document itself. The citation field didn't even seem logical since it didn't describe the record either. AQ's help didn't even discuss the actual text box in the citation field. I first encountered the issue with FTM2010 where in the import of the Gedcom from AQ to FTM every source was stripped of the transcriptions and only the citations remained. I thought FTM, which I didn't like anyway, was completely corrupted and stayed AQ. Recently I to help my mentor who uses an older version of FTM and I purchased FTM2012 and again the import of AQ to FTM failed to import the transcript of the text! That got me wondering what had happened and I ran a test and sure enough FTM imports the text if it is in the citation actual text field! That is a big problem between programs! I just tested the transfer from Legacy to FTM and sure enough every document had the citation only and no transcripts! This is a huge problem in genealogy programs! My tree is not large but even the thought of having to copy over 1200 sources with transcripts to the citation field and fix any formatting problems just to have to it recognize by FTM is more than a little daunting. I'm still kicking myself for entering surnames in caps early on as now I'm having to go through the name list and change them to mixed case and hope I don't make any typos along the way! I'm still trying to figure out why they created programs that had two separate fields for the source text!!! In reading lists I saw some explanations of why and how others use the text at the citation field but apparently I haven't been at it long enough to require a Master list of one source for multiple people. Even those explanations were a bit confusing! Also could someone tell me how to create custom reports please? Hi, I’m having a bit of trouble mapping what you are saying to Legacy screens. In the source detail screen, the first tab is detail information and the only that I think might be relevant is ‘Item of interest” On the text/comments tab, there are two boxes, one for source text, and one for comments. Where is the incorrect mapping? Is it that you are expecting the detail to be in source text, and it is in comments? Re: [LegacyUG] Adding text details to a source/citation and exporting GEDCOM issues
Dawn: Your message is a little too long to respond to all parts, so here are some brief thoughts: Are you making your surname corrections at View Master Lists Surname? That’s by far the quickest and easiest way to do it. Transfer of source citations from one program to another will continue to be problematic until a new GEDCOM standard is developed to include specific tags for all the parts of the citation (don’t hold your breath!). In the meantime, in Legacy, I use the various sections as follows: Master Source Source Info screen is for only the data that will be appropriate for many different citations, such as the title, author, and publication information of a book. Master Source Text/Comments screen is for only comments that apply to the entire item being sourced. An example for a questionable book might be: “Contains much hearsay and many disproven assumptions; use with caution.” Source Detail (accessed from the Source Clipboard) would include a specific page number from the book above. Source Detail Text/Comments screen would be used to quote the actual and applicable text from that specific page. The box below that says “Enter any comments about this Citation (Optional)” could be used for comments such as “Note conflict in birth date and location as shown on death record.” I believe this is how the various fields were designed to be used, but transferring them to another program via GEDCOM will produce *very* mixed results. I couldn't figure out how to use the report system to create a report that listed all the sources with text entered in the source field. Kirsten, that Citation_101 was very helpful. These are two other elements that I may be confused about. It appears I am not the only one trying to this out. (a) Repository, and (b) Event ... at the bottom of the hierarchy, when applicable. Re: [LegacyUG] Master source list
Terry, You need to create Master Sources for each census year, and Legacy has census templates for each of these plus the Channel Isles. On the Individual Name, and Event Screens there is a little blue arrow on the left, click this and at the top of the new screen you will see a link to Choose, Add or Edit a Master Source, click on this and then “Add” in the new screen. In the Search Box enter Census, select, say, England, fill in the details, then Select. You need to select the appropriate census year. Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ From: Terry L. Re: [LegacyUG] Using color
To the best of my knowledge, you cannot color code a single individual. If I'm wrong, others will correct me and I'll learn something too. The Surety field is generally used for this kind of stuff, but that's connected to sources (Source Detail). You could, however, use sources to document this. I'm assuming you found that person X is the child of parents Y and Z from some source. That source perhaps provided the name. In the source detail for name, you can select a lower surety level, and add any notes (Text/Comments) you wish. If you don't wish to use the name field, you can also attach Sources to the person, generally (Unspecified) Another alternative, if you wish to see it on the Family View, is to create either a Child Status or Relationship to your liking and record it for each suspect child. The Child Status will show on the Family View. Keep in mind you can only select one Status or Relationship -- so if the child is both a twin and stillborn, sorry, pick one from the Status (a potential Legacy suggestion?!) Re: [LegacyUG] Chronology Reports
If I understand your request you want a chronology report that includes: 1. The person (your direct ancestor who is female) 2. The spouse and children of her first spouse's previous marriage 3. The children of her and her first spouse 4. the second spouse and the children of the second marriage. 1, 3 and 4 should appear when you create a chronology report for your ancestor.' Number 2 however is not possible. There is no genealogical connection between your ancestor and any previous spouse(s) and offspring of her first husband so Legacy does not include those people in the chronology. Re: [LegacyUG] Adding text details to a source/citation and exporting GEDCOM issues
Bill: Lots of people struggle over the Repository question. According to _Evidence Explained_ listing a repository for published items is not necessary since anyone can trace back and get the item from their own most convenient source (and things you find online are interpreted as being published). That said, I usually do make a note of where I found something because it's easier than trying to remember. I just don't struggle over the format and often make it a privatized note not visible in the citation itself. If I understand your question, I think the Repository would almost always go with the Master Source part of the citation. Just now I can't think of a situation where you'd have different repositories associated with one Master Source unless perhaps you used FamilySearch for one census listing and Ancestry.com for another in the same year and location--but then you're back to not having to list repositories for published items. Unlike most Legacy users, I don't create Events for Individual Records. Most of my documentation is focused on a one-name study and I'm just recording the basic dry facts (name, birth, death, burial, marriage, and locations). When researching an individual in depth, I use a timeline format in Excel. Perhaps others can shed light on your Event question. Kirsten -Original Message- From: William (Bill) R. [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size
Ok, I've had enough of my Legacy screens reducing after I delete the Legact2.USR file. I'm going to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of Legacy. Problem is I've never done this and a little nervous and could use some pointers. I looked for advice on the Legacy pages but couldn't find any info. Is it as simple as uninstalling the Legacy program and deleting every remaining file and folder, then Reinstall from the Legacy page, then restore from the latest backup? All my scans of records are in the C: LegacyDocs, will they be deleted then restored with the back up when I delete the program? What about the many personal settings I have, will they need to be reset or restored with the back up? Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size
Brian, Here are the recommendations I make for a complete uninstall and reinstall which preserves your data and other files you've saved in the c:\Legacy folder and sub-folders. After you uninstall Legacy, with Windows Explorer look in the C:\Legacy folder or whichever folder you had Legacy installed in. Within this folder you will find several files remaining that you will need to delete. Carefully delete the following files with the file extension of: .usr (defined as USR File) .exe (defined as Application) DO NOT delete any of the folders like the Data folder, Doc folder Picture Folder or Web Folder as these folders hold your data and you don't want to accidentally delete your family file or pictures. Don't delete any reports you may have saved to the main Legacy folder nor should you delete the Legacy*.lic file. All the other files should be deleted. You'll need to reset your preferences after you reinstall. Download the latest build of the Standard Edition from our website by clicking on the Download menu button. If you left the Legacy.LIC file as instructed, your Deluxe features will be unlocked. **When you reinstall, make sure that all other programs are shut down and your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is disabled.** Sincerely, Sherry Technical Support Legacy Family Tree On Wed, Jun 20, 2012 at 5:04 PM, Brian Lehman blr...@optonline.net wrote: Ok, I've had enough of my Legacy screens reducing after I delete the Legact2.USR file. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy2.USR file and Screen size
After you uninstall Legacy (Note comma here as a pause), with Windows Explorer to go the c:\Legacy folder.. you have several files to delete after uninstalling Legacy and you need to do that using Windows Explorer. The only way I know how to delete a program is using Uninstall programs in the Control Panel, is this the same thing as you describe? Or are you saying delete the main Legacy file in my C: drive?
