Brian, Re: Nesting of tables. Of course I have reported it! For at least 9 years. Additionally, perhaps you are unaware that I am a Legacy Beta Tester, concentrating my efforts on checking the effects of program changes on web pages (the last bit I would not expect you to know). The rest of your post I have effectively answered elsewhere. Re: [LegacyUG] Webpages
It always amazes me, that whenever Legacy-produced websites are mentioned on this list, it results in a barrage of mail, and we soon are far removed from the original posting. Bernie asked Is there any way to increase the font size on generated webpages? I feel there is too much blank space and much of the text is difficult to read, especially the family links on the right hand side. I've looked through all the tabs and cannot find any reference to fonts. I don't know how much priority this is for the programers but is one of the main reasons I purchased Legacy, especially with the imbedding of images. Maybe the webpages are frosting to some people, but to others (including myself and Bernie) they've been a major factor in purchasing Legacy. Personally I'm not looking for a massive re-design and re-write - I'd be happy for some improvements in fonts and spacing after 9 years looking at the same old format. So why all the animosity and strife? Mary, Gmail does not have an Outbox where sent messages are segregated from incoming mail. You are seeing both the copy of your sent mail and the incoming message from the list when viewing your mail in gmail. The list members only see your outgoing copy after it is relayed to the list members. Re: [LegacyUG] To - Do Report
Jay, If you have a to-do item for each thing you want to find, and have specified the repository as the vital records office you plan to visit, then print the report of to-do items for just that repository, sorted by category first (BMD), then ...well, you would need to enter the year in the task name and then sort on that third. (or if you really don't care when you technically opened a to-do item, you could enter the date in question there...? tho I haven't tested entering a date in the past) If all your individuals in question are in your Legacy database, I'm not sure why you would consider getting another genealogy program just to produce a to-do list? Alternately, if you don't want to use to-do lists at all, but just want a list of who to look for, you could try Search. It would take two passes. Example is whole state of Massachusetts. INDIVIDUALS Search Find Individual Birth Place contains Massachusetts OR Individual Death Place contains Massachusetts Click Print - select what data you want (up to 3 rows) and print or generate CSV so you can sort it by date. (You might want to separate this into 2 passes, so you have a births list and a deaths list... depends on how the records are organized at the VR office.) First is that when I tick either a Preliminary Survey or a Suggested Source as Done, the number on that tab does not change (like it does if I untick a timeline event) - is this normal? because it would be nice if that number did change. Secondly, within the Suggested Sources tab, when I tick done on a suggested source for, say Birth, it marks that source as done on every tab that source appears on. If I've searched a source for a birth, but I havent done it for a death, I would like this to reflect that so that I can check again at a later time. This is especially helpful for a distant relation who I may reasonably expect to be deceased or to be quite elderly, but due to whatever reason, I am not in a position to hear death news via normal channels. I understand that this could greatly increase the number shown on the tab, but it may also make for better research and more accurate results and tree data. Re: [LegacyUG] To - Do Report
Michele, Thanks for some marvelous tips on how to use the To-Do lists!!! I am looking forward to v8, where they have fixed it so the filter and sort settings don't reset every time. --Paula From: Michele Lewis ancestor...@gmail.com To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Sent: Monday, September 16, 2013 11:27 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] To - Do Report Tis so true. You can play around with how you enter things and how you handle the filters and the to-do will do pretty much do anything you want it to. Ever since I started using the to-do list for all of my tasks I am much more organized. For example, if I am going back to do research on someone that I haven't worked with in a while and I see that I am missing a marriage date/place, I can filter my to-dos by the category Marriage Record. I leave it at All Localities and I check both open and closed. I also check all of the type boxes, both tagged boxed and all of the priority boxed. I will then be able to see everything that I have done to try and find the marriage record. I can see all of my negative searches and things that I planned to do and haven't yet. This keeps me from duplicating my efforts. The last tab, sort order, is another way to sort your tasks so that they show up in your list of tasks in a way that will make more sense to you. I can accomplish the same sort of thing as I did above by setting my primary sort field to Category. Now all my marriage tasks will be together, my census tasks will be together etc. I rarely put the open date in the primary sort field because then it is too easy for me to see the tasks that I have been procrastinating on :) :) :) One thing I would like to add. I use the tagging option within the to-do list. If something is untagged it means that I plan to search it but I haven't started on the task yet. If I tag it, that means I am working on it. For example, if I want to request a COD from Mississippi I will leave it untagged. If I have actually sent a letter to the MS Vital Office then I will tag it. I will run the filter to show me everything that is tagged and I can see what all I am still waiting on. I can then decide if I need to send a second request. I do this for all correspondence type stuff. I can also run by untagged which will quickly show me what all I still need to do. This gives you a way to further breakdown your open category of tasks. Is it open because I haven't done it yet or is it open because I have done it but I am still waiting on some sort of response. Re: [LegacyUG] Webpages
I think this is one of many times when customers say - if you are going to include something, make it a bells and whistles item, advertise that you have this feature - then perhaps you want to make sure the feature works as advertised, update the feature over time, and keep in mind the skill level of your customer base that you thought would use the feature. For those who program, code, make their own websites - they are not going to be using this feature. For others with little skills in this area (or little interest in learning the skill-set) they may have made their selection of Legacy (in part) due to its advertisement that it was providing the feature in a useful and pleasing format. Is Legacy first and foremost a genealogy database management program (that is a mouthful!)? YES but when you sell various features and potential customers compare the features - look at the various reports and reviews - you should deliver. I think Legacy does this but if the comment that was made was this is a feature with issues for the past nine years - this should either move up the suggestion chain and be improved OR not be a bells and whistles feature. Not to beat a dead horse but this was an issue with SourceWriter - which I think is great and use and LOVE, but a selling feature originally (and in the manual) was that you could switch your regular sources into SourceWriter - never worked, didn't happen and people new to the program (with the manual) still ask about it every so often. Perhaps not overselling is a good thing. Legacy does so many things well and is so intuitive, it should be enough to focus on the genealogy and make suggestions about other programs that do their little piece of the pie well. My two cents. Well, this was interesting. I was wondering what the Bookmark List was, but I looked in Help before I asked it here. There is an entry for Bookmarks which describes the 3 quick ones at the bottom of the screen, but the regular ones---do they really operate that way any more? I didn't see the little bookmark icon described. Hasn't it been replaced with the History List? Automatically keeps track of your last 200 people. Why would you want to sort THAT? I just use the 3 quick bookmarks at the bottom to facilitate my current project. And even if you rebuilt it, the program would push yours down as you accessed more people, right? Paula, My ultimate wish list for a to-do task At the FIELD entry, right click to select a add to-do (say for a date of birth) From the selectors, choose category, place, est date, and where to research, In my example since it was a field for date of birth, Legacy would automatically select the category birth records, I would then select where I am doing my research, say Cook County Ill Vitals Office, then the date range (abt 1900) then what I am looking in (like Birth Registers 1890-1900 or a FHC Film Number) Then I can print a report in cat seq, in year seq to maximize my time. Re: [LegacyUG] Webpages
No Ron - you are missing my point (sorry if I was unclear). I think that webpages are an important selling feature and that being said, they should work as customers expect or would like them to. I think sometimes the various companies are in such a competition of sorts to get features added or improved (and I guess the customer base is encouraged to demand that) that sometimes the usefulness factor decreases or there is so much going on that improvements don't get made. Some features are treated a little like orphans once they are put into the program. Now it is up to the customer base to let the company know what we want and what doesn't work. But it is concerning to hear that something that does not work right or well, does not get fixed over a long period of time. Bells and whistles as I used it refers to plugging something as a selling point and then not providing it or providing less than what was promised - something that sounds good, is new and bright and shiny, but does not live up to hype (or does not live up to it over time - I don't expect perfection). Is that clearer or still a bit muddy? For the record, I think if there is a feature in a program, it should work. If it does not work it should be fixed or removed. I am a person who wants all the parts to work and play nicely together. Dorset, England, Crew Lists, 1863-1914 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011. This collection was indexed by Ancestry World Archives Project contributors. Original data: Dorset Crew Lists. Dorchester, Dorset: Dorset History Centre. Elizabeth Shown Mills always asks - what are YOU looking at (what are you holding in your hand)? And then go from there. In the example above it is an online database. I might be all wrong (and I am sure someone will tell me) BUT your source is different from the event/fact - the event/fact would be employment and the source would be the crew list. Re: [LegacyUG] Research Guidance - Suggested Sources
The second one is quite bothersome for me actually. When I mark on the Births tab that I've check the vital records, it also marks that on the death tab. I haven't checked for a vital record for a death yet, the person may not even yet be deceased, just very old. I need to be able to come back to this and know what I've checked for different areas. First is that when I tick either a Preliminary Survey or a Suggested Source as Done, the number on that tab does not change (like it does if I untick a timeline event) - is this normal? because it would be nice if that number did change. Anyone got any comments on either of these two issues? Re: [LegacyUG] Webpages
Problem there being -- each customer expects or would like something different. There's more customers than programs. I have three criteria for my webpages -- they should load fast at 4800bps, be not-ugly, be reasonably grouped. So far, every program that has done any one of 'em doesn't do the other two. Then again, two of those are fairly subjective ... Cheryl Tessa Keough wrote: No Ron - you are missing my point (sorry if I was unclear). Re: [LegacyUG] Bookmark List
Paula, If you use Bookmarks as the search term then click display you will see there are several help topics. Even the one on Regular Bookmarks explains how to add a bookmark by selecting a couple then right clicking on the little book icon beside the usual 3 bookmarks to add a bookmark to the list. You can have up to 200 entries in that list. The beauty is that, unlike the history which changes as you navigate in your file, those saved bookmarks do not change unless you change them. To open the list left click on the book icon. Re: [LegacyUG] Last modified date reset on update - NEW INFO
These odd changes to the Modified Date do seem to be related to using Family Search from within Legacy. Many thanks to Bob who discovered this. I know that Jim from tech support said that this was not reversible, however, that would seem to not be the case. Since I have been still holding off entering new information, I tried to restore from my last backup before August 29 - and it worked! No errors, and best of all, my old modified dates have returned! The only thing I need to re-enter is the info that I was working on the day I updated and visited Family Search. So the latest version does indeed seem to work when restoring an older backup from previous version. I will not be visiting Family Search again from within Legacy unless I know this has been fixed. I know there's been some controversy lately, so I thought I'd share a positive about Legacy. I'm sure many of you have use the Charting and had it printed, I'd only created a few just to check them out some time ago. A family reunion is in a few days, so I decided to try to have one printed for our Silent Auction. I am very impressed with the outcome. The program was showing a size of 42.50 x 33. I was able to get an 18 x 24, very readable and printed on a canvas for less than $25 at Office Max. I'm looking forward to playing around with one for myself, and for those who haven't tried it, I encourage you to do so. Be sure to check prices, there was much variation, also Glossy and Matte finish is available for slightly less. Lee - that's the silly part - I didn't link with FS on the computer where all the dates have been changed - I did a search and there was no modified date anywhere prior to 21 Aug 2013 I think it was. On the computer that I had linked to FS I did a search for all modified dates prior to 21 Aug 2013 and there were hundreds of them so I am completely confused as to why. It doesn't really bother me in some ways but it's just curious that some people think it's to do with FS but the computer is saying otherwise it seems! For us yanks, I fairly certain that the phrase bells and whistles means...wait, I just googled it... the things that something, especially a device or machine, has or does that are not necessary but that make it more exciting or interesting. Usually I think it means extra enhancements which is a good thing. As I understand what Ron is saying is that the Brits think of it as not necessarily a good thing. -Original Message- From: Ron Ferguson [mailto:ronfergy@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, September 19, 2013 12:16 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Webpages Thank you Tessa. It may be a language problem. For us bells and whistles a lot of surplus stuff which most people do not require nor would use - program bloat. I can now see where you are coming from, although in my view webpages are much more than a selling feature.
