Re: [LegacyUG] ISO labor-lite suggestions re tagging

2014-04-02 Thread singhals
I was NOT expecting this to be a many-diastered multi-year
project, thus erroneously hypothesized that a statement on
RIN 1 saying Unless otherwise sourced, all data is from the
book would work. So, no, generally there are/were no
sources assigned. When I validated the info I copied it
into NOTES, and moved on. But, yes, ok maybe I can use that
absence to help...

The entire file was assigned a source 2009 PAF db when I
moved it into Legacy.

Thanks!

 Cheryl,
If you did not assign a source to those individuals you keyed in then there
is no way of doing what you are asking other then to do the page by page
look up. However, if you did assign a source then you could just tag all
those individuals or marriages that are assigned that master source. Once
you have done that, then you could do an advanced search:
 What to searchindividual
how to search not equal to which ever tag you assigned to the ones that
 had the source.

That should give you a list of those that you didn't source the book. You
could then assign them a different tag number that you can then look them up
to see if they are in the book or not.

 Database/familyfile of ~15,000 persons and 5100 marriages.
ORIGINALLY created by keying in the contents of a genealogy
book. First done in PAF5, then ported to Legacy 7 and then
 to 8.

Everyone in the book ought to be in the db/ff.
Unfortunately, while documenting those people, I've added
people who should have been in the book but aren't
 (siblings, children, parents).

It's too late to tell me I should've thought of this sooner,
so we can skip that part of the class.

I need a *quick* way to tag maybe 25% in the db/ff who
 aren't in the book.

I /can/ hypothetically sit here with the book in one hand
and page through it again finding and tagging those people.
I suspect the Galaxy will atrophy before I could finish
that because apparently I have to have the person in the
primary position to click a tag. 5 marriages took close to
 2 hours.

I considered the tag family, but that'll end up tagging
everyone, including a sibling and descendants who aren't in
 the book.

I can find /some/ by the omission of the import source. That
won't help the ones added prior to moving it into Legacy.
 Ideas welcomed here.

Yes on this one I did re-use -- there were a lot of

Yes, I did do page-by-page.

If the book data was only in the PAF file, do you still have
it? That file could be imported again into a new Legacy
file. Then import the new Legacy file made from the book and
have a master source set for all the imported individuals.
Run a complete merge. Any individuals with the new master
source are those that came from the book entries. Those
without the master source were not in the book.

Yes I still have both the PAF file and PAF. I'll still miss
a few, but a few is a lot less than 15K.

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Location changed by merging records and closing location edit list

2014-04-02 Thread Brian/Support
Sorry but I will need some step by step instructions.

I did try to follow your description of what you were doing but with
some errors in your terminology I was not able to confirm this as a
problem. I used the sample file that comes with Legacy so you can follow
along with my steps

Use Sample File
Select Asa Clark Brown
Open him for edit which opens the individual edit form (page as you call it)
select his birth in Woodstock
Use the down arrow to open the Master Location List (not the Geo database)
The GEO db opens with Woodstock selected since this location is in the
Geo Database
*** There is no way to combine locations in the Geo Db though so this is
where I lost you ***
I selected Woodstock from the Geo Db to return to the Master Location
List (this is where you can combine locations)
I clicked the Combine button
I then selected Tionesta, PA and clicked the Combine With
(This combined Woodstock into Tionesta so Woodstock no longer existed in
the Master Location List)
To follow your step of combining other locations I then selected West
St. Paul MN
Clicked Combine a second time
Selected Winnebago Prairie MN
Clicked Combine With to remove West St. Paul
Winnebago Prairie is highlighted
I then clicked close (If you click Select at this point you are
selecting the currently highlighted location so that will be the
location returned to the Individual Information form)
The Birth Location for Asa is now Tionesta PA (the location into which
Woodstock was combined) and not the location highlighted on the Master
Location List (Winnebago Prairie).

It should keep the original location as edited, Does NOT! That can ruin

I think I have seen this happen in the past with 7.5 and earlier versions.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging every ancestor and their offspring?

That still does not get all the children and grandchildren and cousins of each
couple. I'm trying to identify all of my relatives (up and down the line) from
those of my wife so I can give a copy of my family tree to my relatives. This
really shouldn't be that difficult.

This is what the Advanced Tagging: Ancestors, Entire Ancestor Line promises.
Whether or not it works for you depends on whether you have links between
branches. I do have links so can't use it. eg a maternal cousin married a
distant relative of my father. You can control it a bit by setting the number
of generations.

When I want all the ancestors of a person with all the offspring of each
ancestor, I identify the ancestor or ancestor couple at the end of lines of
their pedigree chart and then tag the descendants of each one or each couple on
the same tag (which of course I've made sure is
clear) To tag the descendants you use Advanced Tagging - Descendants
- and make sure you choose Descendants and NOT Entire Descendant Line.

If you don't want the spouses who married into the line and enabled the next
generation of descendants, then I think you have to manually untag them.
This is most easily done in Descendant View. Customise the columns to show the
tag number you have used. You can double click in the Tag column to either set
or unset a tag.

Cathy

Dave,
I'm not sure what you intend to do with the selection you described.
You can get part of it quickly with features already in Legacy.
Highlight the person in Family tab for whom ancestry will be the focus.
Control T to start advanced tagging options. Set the tag number to be
changed. Clear that tag first if necessary. Click Ancestors then
click Direct Line Ancestors and check the box under that to Include
Siblings. You may also want to check Include Spouses of Siblings.
Set the Number of Generations to include as desired. Then click OK
to set the tag number selected. When tagging is finished, you will
have the direct line ancestry and all children linked to that tree with
the tag set.

If you really want the children of those children, you would have to
tag descendants of each of the direct line individuals to 3
generations. A focus group might help with that process.

Once you get individuals tagged, then you can use that subset for
whatever purpose you had in mind.

Your option to not put boxes around individuals and Colour text and
boxes are mutually exclusive. To have coloured boxes you have to turn on
the boxes around individuals. If you turn off boxes the report will be
in black text only.

You can customize the text colour by right clicking on the boxes in the

text colours are only used with coloured boxes so if you turn off boxes

You do not say how the report looks when you preview it although you do
say When I preview the report it is as I would like to see it.. Are
there boxes or not? Are they coloured?

Having said that however I did test your assertion that the saved
settings were not working. I set up and saved a pedigree chart with
settings to use both boxes and colours. I then closed the pedigree
chart, reopened it and used reset to set the chart to default settings.
With the defaults the chart used boxes but no colours. I also set up,
previewed and saved another setting file for a chart without boxes.

I then loaded the saved chart settings for the coloured boxes and when I
previewed the report the chart did use boxes and colours. If I then
loaded the saved file for the chart without boxes a preview of the

Thanks Brian. Here is what Jairmie from Tech Support indicated:

Bobby,

You found a bug but not in the sense that you think. Legacy is not supposed to
allow boxes and pictures at the same time. If you want pictures you cannot
have boxes, but in order to have the colors like you want you must have boxes
(4 line colors) so by changing the settings and then changing the line colors
you are getting around Legacy's parameters. You found a work around to our
parameters and this is a bug because Legacy is not supposed to do what you are
doing.

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging every ancestor and their offspring?

2014-04-02 Thread Kurt Kneeland
Try this. It's not difficult but it may be tedious if you've traced your lines
back a long way.

Search - Find - Miscellaneous tab
Set yourself as the start person (if not already set)
Direct Line Ancestors with no parents
Clear List before this search
Create List

This gives you a list of all your furthest back ancestors.

For me, I would have 639. Some might be redundant (eg husband and wife).

From the search list, for each person on the list
First person only
Options - Advanced Tagging
select desired tag number, untag, everyone, yes
Also suggest setting the tag you are using as one of the 3 tags
being shown on the search list
Select tag, Descendants
Set spouse option if desired (presumably all)
Set generations (presumably max/999)
Select Descendants (vs entire line)
OK
Close
All Other (I think it would be OK to skip persons that are already
tagged)
Options - Advanced Tagging
Descendants
OK
Close

This should give you all of your ancestors and all of their descendants (all
your cousins).

Once you get individuals tagged, then you can use that subset for
whatever purpose you had in mind.

which has lines for each persons, Born, Bapt, Died, Buried etc. Currently
each persons section is just a blank box unless I have some information for
 one of the categories.

 Thanks much!

 Margaret

Re: [LegacyUG] ISO labor-lite suggestions re tagging

Cheryl,
Have you thought about using the DATE ADDED information, perhaps that would
separate the book from more recent additions.

SearchFindIndividualAdded Date After or Beforeestimated date you think you
finished added the book.

 Cheryl

RE: [LegacyUG] Tagging every ancestor and their offspring?

2014-04-02 Thread Bob Austen
Dave,

I have always used the Detailed Search to find my entire direct line. I have
loved this Legacy method as I keep only one file and can separate out any
family with ease. Now, with some of the replies, I may be doing it
incorrectly??? Maybe I'll have to explore the results a little more closely.

My method:
Set your Direct Line
Go to Detailed Search (Check 'Clear List before this search')
Primary Condition 1
Look for whom? Individual
Where to look Relationship
How to Look Equal to
What to look forRelated
Second Condition: Or
Look for whom? Individual
Where to look Relationship
How to Look Equal to
What to look forSpouses and Inlaws

Then you can go to Options/Advanced Tagging and tag everyone in the Search List.

This should give you your entire family tree.

If you leave out the second condition you won't get the spouses and inlaws.
This does include my step children but not my wife's other husband.

This should work for anyone in your file where you have set the direct line.
If you want your wife's tree then use her as the starting person to Set
Preferred Line.

I would appreciate knowing if this was what you were looking for and how you
make out.

Dave,
I'm not sure what you intend to do with the selection you described.
