Susan,

Next time start a new email when you are introducing a new topic. Just changing
the Subject line doesn't start a new conversation.

The Geo Locator database is known not to be very accurate when mapping.
On the map, right click where the pin should be to relocate it.

I don't use it at all. I just use the map (and Google etc to define locations
accurately).

Is this a problem or do I need to reinstall?

If it's anything like it was in 7.5, you'll see a column headed 'L'. If it
contains a 'V' then it has latitude/longitude values. The pin will show up
roughly where the values indicate. If the pin is in the wrong place, simply
manipulate the map until the correct place is shown then right-click on the map
to re-situate the pin.

Re: [LegacyUG] Child Status

2014-05-15 Thread Robert57P_gmail
I also was originally confused by these two fields. I originally put
adopted in the child status field, until I realized there is an
issue if both parents did not adopt the child. I eventually figured it
out and fixed my various records, but I do agree that the usage of this
field is not obvious.

Side note - I know I entered some new values to these fields, but I do
not remember which ones are defaults and which are manually added. It
would be nice if Legacy automatically flagged entries that were user
created/modified. I have gotten into the habit of starting user
modified items with a period (Child relationship, events, etc) so I can
easily tell which ones I've messed with so I know I should watch their
wording carefully. But I wish Legacy would do some type of indicator
automatically.

Anyway - my child status options at present are:
Miscarriage
None
Stillborn
Twin

My relationship to parent options at present are:
.cousin - I manually added this
Adopted
Biological
Challenged
Disproved
Foster
Guardian - I think I manually added this
Sealing
Step - I think I manually added this?

Side note 2 - I wish there was a USER OPTION of having a screen pop-up
up automatically whenever a new child is added (just like the Marriage
screen automatically pops up whenever you add a new spouse). This
OPTIONAL pop-up would include all three fields (Child Status,
Relationship to ...). There are many times when I forget to set these
fields. Yes, I realize it assumes Biological if blank, and I realize
most of the entries would normally be Biological, but it still would
be nice to have an OPTION for the screen pop up automatically as a
reminder to the user.

Side note 3 - I also wish there was an option to have the value of these
fields show up in more places (on the family tab and Pedigree tab for
example).

Thanks,
Bob

The request to show relationship to parent on family tab has been
asked before and may already be in the list of enhancements wanted.
If not, please do push it along. As for changing the name of Child
Status to Birth Status, that is not to urgent but how it is used is
important. I see lots of users that have added Adopted and other
designations to the Child Status list just so it will display in the
Family tab but that can be wrong when it is not both parents that have
adopted the child. Most of the time, it is one biological parent that
has re-married and the new spouse adopts the children. That is why
having the Relationship to Parent fields should always be used even if
the adoption is by both parents so it is consistent. The Child Status
that I mentioned called Sibling same name is great for those
families where a name has been used more than once for different
children. Looking at one of those families, it is obvious that the
same name was already detected and documented versus a mistake in
 recording.

2014-05-15 Thread magnoliasouth
Hi Bob! All of your ideas are great ones, but I especially like the
one below. I too often forget to use it as well and many times it is
imperative that I do.

Take the family where the parents live in a home, then several of the
children, along with their spouses, live in the same home. Then the
children of those children live in the same home. How do I know which
parent is Mary's, the grandchild of said head of the household? I
don't. At least, not yet. For this reason I have a Grandchild
relationship set to use until I'm sure whose parents the grandchildren
actually are. Guardian is all well and good (and useful for outside
family relationships), but the grandparents really aren't the
guardians if the parents are living there too.

Would you mind submitting this as a feature request?

Slight difference from the behaviour in 7.5. In 7.5, an Abandon Changes box

There was no message when clicking the X (close) icon. This is, I think, the

[LegacyUG] Relationships

2014-05-15 Thread Graham Love
I'm glad to see that the latest update has addressed some of the
relationship problems 'Relationships - Now recognize spouses of
half-siblings.' - shame they weren't all fixed.

The child of a half relative shows correctly for males but incorrectly for
females eg.
The male children of my Half 3rd Great Granduncle show as Half 1st cousins 4
times removed.
The female children of my Half 3rd Great Grandaunt show as 1st cousins 4
times removed.
The male children of one of these cousins show as Half 2nd cousin 3 times
removed if male and 2nd cousin 3 times removed if female.

The double asterisks for relatives of a younger generation remain.

[LegacyUG] Update Problems

2014-05-15 Thread Bobby Johnson
After viewing several posts on this list indicating a new update was
available, I clicked on the Legacy Home tab. Here it indicated that 414
was the latest build. This is the second time a new update was not been
correctly identified here. By clicking on the Update header above the
message that I have the latest build the Check for Updates window opened.
I was able to update from there without going to the Update web page and
downloading the file.
After completing the update I had over 6000 media files missing. The
relinker quickly fixed this problem.
The Startup family was also changed.
I can't seem to get a handle on what might have caused these problems.
Anyone have suggestions as to how to avoid this in the future?
Bobby

Re: [LegacyUG] Child Status

2014-05-15 Thread singhals
Be it known and REMEMBERED that it is not usually /clear/
whether the adoptive status is applicable to both parents or
to one, and if only to one, which?

Some states required the biological parent to co-adopt the
child, thus making the child both biological and adopted.

 Sherry,
I will send you a detailed example of the step children
issue. I hope you will take the time to examine and
understand the scenario so it might get fixed.

The request to show relationship to parent on family tab has
been asked before and may already be in the list of
enhancements wanted. If not, please do push it along. As for
changing the name of Child Status to Birth Status, that is
not to urgent but how it is used is important. I see lots of
users that have added Adopted and other designations to
the Child Status list just so it will display in the Family
tab but that can be wrong when it is not both parents that
have adopted the child. Most of the time, it is one
biological parent that has re-married and the new spouse
adopts the children. That is why having the Relationship to
Parent fields should always be used even if the adoption is
by both parents so it is consistent. The Child Status that I
mentioned called Sibling same name is great for those
families where a name has been used more than once for
different children. Looking at one of those families, it is
obvious that the same name was already detected and
documented versus a mistake in recording.

 One other

 children of a later

The relationship status is not displayed (wish it were)

[LegacyUG] dates for Events?

2014-05-15 Thread elizabeth
I use the free version of Legacy 7.5

Is there a way to have the date for an Event display differently than other
dates for other fields?

All my dates display as Month/Day/Year, just as I want them to. But for
Events I want them to display differently because I don''t always know the
month and day.

I want all the events to show up in 'book' style reports with the Year
first, then month, then day so that they can be easily scanned.

Right now I get this type of display which is difficult to look through

1920
1930
September 8, 1933
1940
August, 1941

I want it to look like this...

1920
1930
1933, September 8
1940
1941, August

Is there any way to enter dates for Events so the year displays first?

[LegacyUG] Problem importing FTM into Legacy 7.5

2014-05-15 Thread Flora
Hello,

I imported a Ged Com file from FTM file into Legacy 7.5 . For some reason
the text in the notes section is not importing correctly. In every note
section I have checked you find text where the spacing between random words
is gone, and there are a lot of these instances in each page of notes. In
other words you will see:

the lazydog is lying under a hugetree.

I did what was suggested (8/27/07) by Leon Chapman on this forum and
imported the file selecting the following as instructed:

1. Main Legacy GEDCOM import screen - Check Rewordwrap note fields

Under Customize button, lower left go to Items to import screen:

  A. Check Lines are broken in middle of words

When I found the problem I tried imported the file again without checking
Rewordwrap, and it made no difference. The spacing between words is still
not correct in my notes.

Does anybody have a suggestion on how to fix this problem? I have a huge
file and it is going to be a major problem to go through all the notes and
correct spacing between the words.

I am importing Ged Com files from FTM 2012-Version 21.0.723, but I also
tried the import with a Ged Com file generated from FTM 2005 with the very
same results.

Thank you,

Flora

No you are not doing anything wrong but the Geo Database is designed to

Re: [LegacyUG] Update Problems

Hi Bobby,

To see a new update on the Legacy Home Tab you have to have started Legacy
after the update is on the server.

The other problems you had seem very strange.

Are you sure it opened the same file you'd been working on and not another copy?

Where is the program installed?
Where is your file?
What setting do you have at Option 1.2?

Re: [LegacyUG] Marriage tagging

2014-05-15 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Bernd,

Marriage Tags are not very useful and they can't be applied to a group. You
have to do them one by one.

Re MRINs on printing a Search List.

The include RINs and MRINs on the first tab only applies to the surrounding
relatives and they're only included in lines between the individuals being
reported. They aren't included when you choose csv output.
You have to choose the RIN and the Spouse's MRIN as fields on one of the Rows
to get it in the report. The Spouse's MRIN returns the MRIN for all spouses
whereas for the name of the spouse you have to specify which spouse. If you're
only interested in particular marriages, then preferred is the way to go.
Otherwise you might want more than one field for spouse names.

Re: [LegacyUG] dates for Events?

2014-05-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Hi Elizabeth,

What you are wanting with dates is an option in the Chronology View and Report.

However these aren't part of the free version of Legacy.

However in the Standard Free version, you can change the display for all dates
in Options Customise - Date Tab and this choice carries through to reports
for all dates.

Note this isn't changing the entry order which should match your computer date
format.
In Legacy 7.5 this appears as another choice on the Dates tab but in Legacy 8
this is set automatically from the computer settings.

 other dates for other fields?

All my dates display as Month/Day/Year, just as I want them to. But
for Events I want them to display differently because I don''t always
 know the month and day.

I want all the events to show up in 'book' style reports with the Year
 first, then month, the
n day so that they can be easily scanned.

Right now I get this type of display which is difficult to look
 through

 1920
 1930
 September 8, 1933
 1940
 August, 1941

I want it to look like this...

 1920
 1930
 1933, September 8
 1940
 1941, August

Is there any way to enter dates for Events so the year displays first?

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem importing FTM into Legacy 7.5

Hi Flora,

When you are doing the import, note there is a Customise button. Click this and
you get several options for importing note fields depending on how the note is
in the gedcom. You might want to look at the gedcom in a text editor to see how
the lines are broken - or just experiment with each option.

There are 3 options:
Let Legacy decide
Lines are broken in the middle of words
Lines are broken between words

Clicking the Help button from that screen gives further information.

Cheers,

Thank you Cathy. Just your mentioning that there was some sort of

Re: [33A-1B07A2C3-040E] Re: [LegacyUG] Notes - Added warning message if notes are edited and then Cancel or X is clicked.

2014-05-15 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Michele,

I just discovered the new update to Legacy, did that, and then tested
the problem again. On my data base and the sample data base.

Note that I almost always work from the pedigree view, then click on the
person to open, and then on Notes to add or edit them.

Typing in Test and clicking the x or Cancel does not give a
warning message and does not save the new data.

I did get a strange, not the usual warning, with one unintentional test
in the previous version. Apparently the problem is not fixed. I think
that I got numerous messages from Brian saying it was fixed about 10
days ago, but I am quite sure I have deleted his messages. Please pass
this on to Brian.

I reported a similar problem a while ago to Support, I believe it will
be fixed with the next update. Very frustrating to lose a lot of work
then have to do it over again.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Locator

2014-05-15 Thread Cathy Pinner
Susan,

Leaving out the comma between house name and street won't help the Geo Locator
database stuff.
It won't help the map way of finding a location either. The map will no longer
be able to find the street. Currently the map places the pin on the right
street with the location you gave.

So you either decide to put the address in the address field instead of the
location field and continue to bother with the Geo Locator database OR you
forget that and go straight to the map by clicking the down arrow at the end of
the location field and get your co-ordinates from there and the full formatting
of the location from your good sense or a Google search. That's what I do.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Locator

2014-05-15 Thread Cathy Pinner
The V means they have been mapped using the Bing map - which used to be Virtual
Earth hence the V.
The ? means that Bing can't find it.
The blank means that Bing hasn't tried.
If there is an L, then the coordinates have come from the Geo Location database.

It's all in the Help accessed from the Master Location list.

There is an option to have Bing map all locations automatically. I don't find
this useful as they all have to be checked. As genealogists we enter historic
locations and modern maps don't cope so well with those.
Note there is a column headed Ver for Verified.
I click that whenever I've checked that the pin is in the correct place.

When mapping locations with the map - if it gets it wildly wrong, click the
Geocode button and choose Do not auto geo-code current location
You'll get a dash in the L column.
Then if you use another already mapped location that is closer to the required
place and then move back to the one you're mapping to manually place the pin w
ith a right click, you won't have the frustration of the map flying back to the
wildly wrong spot.

RE: [LegacyUG] Update Problems

2014-05-15 Thread Bobby Johnson
Cathy,
The update was on the server but did not trigger my program that it was
available. This shouldn't happen no matter where the program is installed or
where the family file is located. The program and data are in the default
locations and 1.2 is set to open the last family file opened. The strange
thing is that this is the second time it has happened to me and not in
consecutive updates. The last time was early in the version 8 history. If no
one else has this problem it must be with my setup. Everything is in the
default locations and nothing strange about my data. Can't put my finger on
what could be causing this.
Thanks for your ideas.

To see a new update on the Legacy Home Tab you have to have started Legacy

The other problems you had seem very strange.

Are you sure it opened the same file you'd been working on and not another

 Where is the program installed?
 Where is your file?
What setting do you have at Option 1.2?

[LegacyUG] Source citation report problem

But In the Master Source Definition box for that source (which is in the

I have checked a a few other sources and so far the only ones italicized

 Rodney:

1st of all, I don't like all the garbage at the end of your email.
Please delete that on all future emails before sending. Thanks.

I am running Parallels Fusion 9, v.9.0.24229, dated April 1, 2014 on an iMac.
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate as a Virtual Machine in Parallels.
I am running the most current version of Legacy, L8.0.0.425.

I have no problem exporting a GEDCOM file or a Legacy GEDCOM file using the
 Sample database.

What system and versions are you running? Parallels? Windows? Legacy?

I just got off the phone with Legacy and they could not make it work. Gedcom
file will not load to export. Legacy Deluxe 8 on Macbook Air using Fusion
has worked seamless until now. I ran export Gedcom but all I see is the
hourglass and nothing loads. Any ideas. Thanks, Rod
