[LegacyUG] Recording uncertain dates

2014-10-02 Thread Pam Sim
Is there a way of recording doubtful dates in Legacy 8. For example an index
has shown a death which may be for the individual concerned but this has not
been verifiable, or the death is recorded in a particular quarter of a year
(in the UK death registers) but the exact date is not known.

I have written Jan qu 1862 but this comes up as a Problem

I have also tried after 1861 or before 1863 but none of these are
accepted by the Legacy programme

Thanks

Pam Sim

Re: [LegacyUG] Recording uncertain dates

2014-10-02 Thread Sherry/Support
Pam,

In the Help file under Dates: Approximate, you'll find several
acceptable date prefixes - Abt, Aft, Bef, Bet, Cal, Circa,
and BC

You can also use Quarter Dates from the GRO by entering the date as Jun Q 1876

My practice is to not enter anything that's doubtful. I simply make
a To-Do item for that to research further before I put the information
in. If I do find good info and then conflicting info, I make a To-Do
to confirm which is correct, use the most likely date as the primary
date and add an Alt. date as an Event.

Sincerely,
Sherry

Pam,

To record a quarter date in Legacy the format is Jun Q 1862. You can have Mar
Q, Jun Q, Sep Q, Dec Q. Jan Q won’t work because that isn’t a valid quarter
month.

“After 1861” is a valid entry as is “Before 1863.” These should not trigger
an error.

[LegacyUG] Source question - obits

2014-10-02 Thread BARTON LEWIS
I posted a query about obituaries on Tuesday night but it never posted.
I don't know why not, but here goes again:

I was entering an obituary as a source, and using the Source Writer.
The obit was at a local library in Arkansas.  I selected Newspapers -
print editions - (microfilm or original).  As I went through the fields
for both source and detail, I did not see a field where I could enter in
the repository - the name of the public library where the obituary was
held.  Should that not be an included piece of information?

Many thanks,

Barton

RE: [LegacyUG] Source question - obits

2014-10-02 Thread Michele/Support
According to Evidence Explained (section 2.19, Citing Repositories), if you are
looking at a source (of published material) that is available at multiple
repositories you do not need to include the name of the repository in the
citation. If this newspaper was on microfilm it should also be available (at
the very least) at the Arkansas State Archives and at least one of the state
universities. If you were looking at the actual newspaper, it would, most
likely, still be available on microfilm. The reason I specified published
material (such as a newspaper) then this rule holds true. If you were talking
about something like a unique manuscript that is only in one place you would
have to cite the repository.

Unfortunately, Legacy seems to read a Quarter date as being 31 March,
30 Jun etc,

If, for example, you enter a Birthdate as Mar Q 1950 and then enter a
Baptism date of 1 Feb 1850 this will be flagged as a Potential Problem
because Baptism before Birth.

Obviously you can mark it as not a problem but it's a minor inconvenience.

Jenny,
Personally, if I knew the person was born in the March quarter and I knew that
their exact baptismal date was 01 Feb, I would change the birth date to Between
01 Jan 1862 and 01 Feb 1862. I have now narrowed their birth down to 30 days

Yes that does work but whilst usually true for a marriage or death (so in this

I use a batch file renamer

Its free and easy to use

http://www.ronsplace.eu/

You could point to the folder where your files are located , do a replace
(space) with (underscore) and with one click it will change all the file
names.
It can also make changes to 'un- capitalize your filenames.

Hope that helps

RE: [LegacyUG] Source question - obits

2014-10-02 Thread Tom Momeyer
Thanks Michele, for your explanation below. In addition to your comments, it
may be helpful to save notes where the published material was viewed for
later review or re-use. So, as new to Legacy, anyone feel free to correct any
following mistakes, and I'll learn more about Legacy. For a repository
location (where no record is required for published material) It looks like you
can save notes for the location of the viewed material where the notes are not
printed in reports, etc.

So, going out on a limb, anyone please correct as needed... Options when adding
the obit:

(1) Add the obit as a master source and in the Master Source Definition,
Text/Comments tab, in the (lower large box for user input) Comments about this
master source box, type in the notes for the viewed location.

Or

(2) Add the newspaper as a master source (is this possible?) and in the Source
Detail, Text/Comments tab, in the (lower large box for user input) Enter any
comments about this citation box, type in the notes for the viewed location.

Also (for both options above), check or uncheck the boxes below the typed notes
indicating whether to include in reports (or not). So, if later on, you or
someone else asks and you want to review the item again, you have notes
recorded regarding where you viewed the material.

Also (for both options above), there is an option to add a file ID# for a saved
copy (digital or printed) of the obit.

it should also be available (at the very least) at the Arkansas State
Archives and at least one of the state universities. If you were
looking at the actual newspaper, it would, most likely, still be
available on microfilm. The reason I specified published material
(such as a newspaper) then this rule holds true. If you were talking
about something like a unique manuscript that is only in one place you
would have to cite the repository.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Source question - obits

I posted a query about obituaries on Tuesday night but it never
posted. I don't know why not, but here goes again:

I was entering an obituary as a source, and using the Source Writer.
The obit was at a local library in Arkansas. I selected Newspapers -
print editions - (microfilm or original). As I went through the
fields for both source and detail, I did not see a field where I could
enter in the repository - the name of the public library where the
obituary was held. Should that not be an included piece of
 information?

 Many thanks,

Note if you use any of these filename changers, you'll have to reattach
your media to Legacy if it's more than a change to all lowercase.

Also note that with Legacy you don't have to worry if you have a case
mix in filenames or spaces if you are using the Legacy webpage generator
as spaces are automatically changed to underscore and there is an option
to change to all lowercase. Legacy also saves you from yourself by
offering to ensure unique filenames if you have the bad habit of naming
different photos stored in different folders with the same name.

[LegacyUG] 8.0.0.439 Sources and Duplicates?

2014-10-02 Thread Jessica Morgan
I've been working very hard on a few files for a family reunion coming up,
and today I open up files to continue where I left off, and find that the
sourcing is completely gibberish in every file I open, as well as two to
five duplicates of persons in multiple databases. The RINs are all out of
order too. I have one file that the beginning person is listed correctly,
then two generations down he's also listed as his grandson's son, then his
great grandson's father.

I'm so frustrated

Is there a known bug in 439 for any of this, or is it just me? Any tips on
trying to correct the problems? I'm in tears over here! I've opened
multiple files, of different branches of my family, and they are all like
this.

I've had zero computer problems. I'm working on a Microsoft Surface Pro 2
that is less than a year old.

Re: [LegacyUG] Error 506 during back up

2014-10-02 Thread Cathy Pinner
When you get a numbered error message, the first thing to do is to check
the Legacy troubleshooting webpage.
From the home page - under the Help menu

This particular number isn't listed so your next best option is to
contact Support

You could try some of the general help suggestions.
You could try clearing the temp folder - the location is at Options -
Customise 6.3

In the meantime, do you really need to backup the media every time you
backup your family file? Are you adding new media every session?
I actually don't use the Legacy media backup at all unless I'm preparing
to send part of my file and related media to a cousin.
I back the media up in my regular backups to external hard drive and
actually it's backed up all the time as I keep my attached media in
Dropbox. I am able to do this with the free Dropbox because I've
attached small copies of photos to Legacy - and I don't attach many
source docs.

I have started getting an error 506 – Can not write to temp file

fine until sometime last week. Can anyone offer me any help. Thanks.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source question - obits

2014-10-02 Thread Cathy Pinner
Yes you can add the Newspaper as the Master Source. This is what I do.
There are templates for Newspapers as Barton indicates. There are a
number of different ones depending on how you are accessing the newspaper.

Thanks Michele, for your explanation below. In addition to your
comments, it may be helpful to save notes where the published
material was viewed for later review or re-use. So, as new to Legacy,
anyone feel free to correct any following mistakes, and I'll learn
more about Legacy. For a repository location (where no record is
required for published material) It looks like you can save notes for
the location of the viewed material where the notes are not printed in
 reports, etc.

So, going out on a limb, anyone please correct as needed... Options
 when adding the obit:

 (1) Add the obit as a master source and in the Master Source
Definition, Text/Comments tab, in the (lower large box for user input)
Comments about this master source box, type in the notes for the
 viewed location.

 Or

 (2) Add the newspaper as a master source (is this possible?) and in
the Source Detail, Text/Comments tab, in the (lower large box for user
input) Enter any comments about this citation box, type in the notes
 for the viewed location.

Also (for both options above), check or uncheck the boxes below the
typed notes indicating whether to include in reports (or not). So, if
later on, you or someone else asks and you want to review the item
again, you have notes recorded regarding where you viewed the material.

Also (for both options above), there is an option to add a file ID#
for a saved copy (digital or printed) of the obit.

According to Evidence Explained (section 2.19, Citing Repositories),
if you are looking at a source (of published material) that is
available at multiple repositories you do not need to include the name
of the repository in the citation. If this newspaper was on microfilm
it should also be available (at the very least) at the Arkansas State
Archives and at least one of the state universities. If you were
looking at the actual newspaper, it would, most likely, still be
available on microfilm.

 Barton
