Re: [LegacyUG] Lines in Events in Book Reports

2015-02-18 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Diana,

This is a known issue.

The solution is to close Legacy and run the reports again without
running an Individual report/chart first.

However, if you have the latest update, you'll have date problems.

Most of these things are fixed in the coming update.

In the Ancestor Book, Descendant Book, and Descendant Narrative Book
reports, there are lines between events (both Modified Register and
Register) that haven’t always been there. I find them very
distracting and wasteful of ink PLUS the lines go right through the
photos on the right hand side, making for a very ugly report.

I must have changed some setting inadvertently and can’t find it to
undo it -- I’ve tried all sorts of things but can’t get rid of them.
 Surely it’s something simple. J

Thanks for any help with this!

Ila,
Let’s try the simple stuff first.

1) Close Legacy, reboot your computer but don’t open Legacy back up yet.

2) In Windows navigate to the Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Usr
folder and open it. Delete the FGS.usr file.

3) Now open Legacy back up and do a check/repair. Select File File
Maintenance Check Repair. Click Proceed. If an error is found select No
so that the check/repair will continue. If there are errors found, run the
check repair again until there are no errors. If there are any errors that
Legacy can't clear automatically, look at the log file that is generated and
it will give you the information you need to clear the errors manually.

Sometimes a simple reboot is all that it takes. If there is a problem in
the FGS.usr file deleting it will take care of the problem. A check/repair
is always a good idea when anything is amiss.

4) Now try generating a Family Group Report again.

5) If that didn't work then see the instructions here
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00234

6) If that doesn’t work then you need to send us an email via this form
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Problems.asp Make sure that you tell us
what all you have done already to fix the problem so that we don’t repeat
things.

I just updated to 8.0.0.467 this morning. I have been printing family group
sheets for the past few days. I tried this morning and got the following
error message. Error 91. Object variable or With block variable not set.
This happened both when trying to preview the FG sheet and when trying to
print it to a PDF file.

Did I miss something, or is this a bug? None of the settings have been
changed from what I used yesterday.

Something I do but it depends on how you use tags

I Tag as Tag1 all my direct line and Tag9 as everyone in my Tree

That way I can see at a glance my direct line and if I edit a person who I know

[LegacyUG] Date Reporting prefixed with from rather than on

I have the latest build and just ran a Descendant's book report. All birth,

[LegacyUG] Oh-oh!

2015-02-18 Thread Brian L. Lightfoot
I was entering a new location today and jumped into the Master Location List
to edit the Short Name Location. But that's when I noticed that there were
two identical location with the same name. I clicked on the other one and
was surprised to see a very large list of names associated with that
location..something that I knew was impossible. Then Legacy opened up and
ERROR window and recommended that I do a File Repair. I did that with no
other warnings, and went back to my list to now discover that approximately
5,000 names have their birth location associated with the new location.

I don't know which is easier, go back to a recent back-up and lose all my
work from the past few days, or tag all these people with the wrong location
and edit each one individually.

I think I just take 2 aspirins.

I tried to find an answer to this online, but couldn't. So...

I entered some new data on a relative, George Wilkes Beckett, Jr.

I then ran a descendant book report starting with his father, Georges

I then ran a descendant narrative book report on George Wilkes Beckett,

I cannot figure out what is going on. Something obvious, no doubt, but I'm

I was copying and pasting these events - only minor changes each time [year

Check that your problem doesn't have anything to do with Privacy options -

I tried to find an answer to this online, but couldn't. So...

I entered some new data on a relative, George Wilkes Beckett, Jr.

I then ran a descendant book report starting with his father, Georges Wilkes
Beckett. The new data didn't show up in the report. Furthermore, I had checked
the box for all generations, but only two showed up.

I then ran a descendant narrative book report on George Wilkes Beckett, and
everything showed up - all the new data, and through all five generations.

I cannot figure out what is going on. Something obvious, no doubt, but I'm
tearing out my hair trying to figure it out!!

Any help...

Re: [LegacyUG] Direct Line Ancestor

2015-02-18 Thread Carl Cox
I am going over an extensive bunch of my ancestors, synching them with LFS.
I edit the starting person, currently using descendants. You can also select
ancestors, tags, or end-of-line, and choose how many generations. Edit is
near the upper left corner of the LFS screen. Once you decide rather to use
ancestors or descendants, you just select the starting person, and have them
underlined on the family screen when you initiate the LFS screen. That way
you can choose whichever family or linked families you want to work on. Of
course when you have as many submissions over as long a time as my family
has, you have a tremendous job cleaning up the many years of zealous
research. (This would probably post better on the LegacyFT email group.)

everything I wanted in their web page generator, or it wasn't in the
format I wanted it to be in. So, I improvised and used a lot of HTML
references in the person's Events that I'm pretty sure won't translate
in a GEDCOM export. The first time I decided that the Legacy web output
wasn't doing what I'd hoped I decided to improvise a way to get the output
to display the way I wanted it to display. Then I had to go back through
the database and revisit every person. I just don't have the desire to go
back through all my sources and events and revisit all my documentation
*again*. Actually, I'm happy with the Legacy output and while updating the
web isn't a one click event it only takes me a day or so to massage the
Legacy web output and get it uploaded.

Thank you, Cathy! :)

I was starting to think I was crazy because I *know* it didn't always do that!

Hi Diana,

This is a known issue.

The solution is to close Legacy and run the reports again without running an
Individual report/chart first.

Re: [LegacyUG] Private events

2015-02-18 Thread Gail Vall
Thanks. That's what I was finding. I guess the easiest way to change it
is to change the tick box on the main event screen to not private and come
up with another name for those that need to stay private for the time
being, or just remember to tick the box to begin with. Like I said, it was
obvious that I needed to do some housekeeping, so that is what I'm doing.
It's surprising how messy files can become when you work on them,
sometimes when you are not as awake as you should be...

 Hi Gail,

There are two ways you can make an Event Private. You can make just this
particular instance Private by checking the tick box OR you can go into the
Edit the Event Definition and make that whole Event Private. (which is what
you need to do for your Found Event so you don't have to worry whether or
not you've forgotten to check it private.)

Once the whole Event is Private I don't think you can make one instance of
it Public by unchecking the tick box.

Re: [LegacyUG] Oh-oh!

2015-02-18 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Brian,
Sorry about this.
I've seen this on a smaller scale but couldn't reproduce it.

Your easiest way (unless this group is larger) would be to search on
Modified Date and tag and export all those modified after the date of a
backup that's OK. Then merge or use Split screen and copy and paste
change details.

If it is a larger group, again use Split Screen with one side using a
backup that's OK and the other the one where the location has changed so
that you don't have to research what the correct location is.

Keep an eye on whether it was one location that was changed to the wrong
one or a mix. I think the bug is something to do with merging locations
and a wrong merge happens.

Re: [LegacyUG] Direct Line Ancestor

2015-02-18 Thread Cathy Pinner
Another option is to Set relationship so that the people you are more
interested in show a relationship and the others don't. You can add
relationship to columns on Index View and Descendant View though it's
less relevant there.
The relationship should show above the main couple in Family View. If it
doesn't, check your colour settings. You may have the text colour the
same as the background.
Then just work on the ones that are related - but whether that's a wise
strategy depends where and when you are researching. In some places the
families are inter-related multiple times and if you don't trace the
surrounding families you don't realise this.

I have all my data in one database. I found I was getting side

collateral lines instead of my direct lines. I thought I was
being smart and exported my direct line ancestors. I made some
changes and merged the files. I just spent over an hour merging
duplicates because they were all duplicates LOL

Is there some way that is more efficient than splitting the
files? When I look at the sync screen, I don’t see anything
distinguishing direct lines from collateral lines.

How do you handle this? As a retired secretary, when I get a
match on Family Search and their file has numerous alternate
names that are all the same, the secretary in me gets involved
in just cleaning up the file. I know, as a friend of mine says,
 it’s a personal problem. LOL

Anyway, looking for suggestions that might work for me.
