Re: [LegacyUG] Lines in Events in Book Reports
Hi Diana, This is a known issue. The solution is to close Legacy and run the reports again without running an Individual report/chart first. However, if you have the latest update, you'll have date problems. Most of these things are fixed in the coming update. Cathy Diana Sparks mailto:dlcspa...@gmail.com Wednesday, 18 February 2015 10:04 AM In the Ancestor Book, Descendant Book, and Descendant Narrative Book reports, there are lines between events (both Modified Register and Register) that haven’t always been there. I find them very distracting and wasteful of ink PLUS the lines go right through the photos on the right hand side, making for a very ugly report. I must have changed some setting inadvertently and can’t find it to undo it -- I’ve tried all sorts of things but can’t get rid of them. Surely it’s something simple. J Thanks for any help with this! [LegacyUG] Date Reporting prefixed with from rather than on
I have the latest build and just ran a Descendant's book report. All birth, baptism, death, burial and marriage dates are shown as from 2 Feb 1900, for example, rather than on 2 Feb 1900. [LegacyUG] Oh-oh!
I was entering a new location today and jumped into the Master Location List to edit the Short Name Location. But that's when I noticed that there were two identical location with the same name. I clicked on the other one and was surprised to see a very large list of names associated with that location..something that I knew was impossible. Then Legacy opened up and ERROR window and recommended that I do a File Repair. I did that with no other warnings, and went back to my list to now discover that approximately 5,000 names have their birth location associated with the new location. I don't know which is easier, go back to a recent back-up and lose all my work from the past few days, or tag all these people with the wrong location and edit each one individually. I think I just take 2 aspirins. S sorry to hear this. Wish I could give advice but I do empathize with you. I had a bunch of marriages duplicated once and had to go through every one individually. Then Legacy opened up and ERROR window and recommended that I do a File Repair. I did that with no other warnings, and went back to my list to now discover that approximately 5,000 names have their birth location associated with the new location. I don’t know which is easier, go back to a recent back-up and lose all my work from the past few days, or tag all these people with the wrong location and edit each one individually. Re: [LegacyUG] Direct Line Ancestor
I am going over an extensive bunch of my ancestors, synching them with LFS. I edit the starting person, currently using descendants. You can also select ancestors, tags, or end-of-line, and choose how many generations. Edit is near the upper left corner of the LFS screen. Once you decide rather to use ancestors or descendants, you just select the starting person, and have them underlined on the family screen when you initiate the LFS screen. That way you can choose whichever family or linked families you want to work on. Of course when you have as many submissions over as long a time as my family has, you have a tremendous job cleaning up the many years of zealous research. (This would probably post better on the LegacyFT email group.) Carl __ I have all my data in one data base. I found I was getting side tracked with syncing with Family Search and working on collateral lines instead of my direct lines. I thought I was being smart and exported my direct line ancestors. I have discovered one individual marked as private (which I am sure I did not do myself), and no matter how many times I change the Privacy setting on his individual screen so that it reads not private, his data is never shown, except for his marriage date and spouse's information (they had no children). I have read and re-read the help file on privacy and tried to search the message archives, but so far no solution to this. So, I improvised and used a lot of HTML references in the person's Events that I'm pretty sure won't translate in a GEDCOM export. The first time I decided that the Legacy web output wasn't doing what I'd hoped I decided to improvise a way to get the output to display the way I wanted it to display. Then I had to go back through the database and revisit every person. I just don't have the desire to go back through all my sources and events and revisit all my documentation *again*. Actually, I'm happy with the Legacy output and while updating the web isn't a one click event it only takes me a day or so to massage the Legacy web output and get it uploaded. I thought I was being smart and exported my direct line ancestors. I made some changes and merged the files. I just spent over an hour merging duplicates because they were all duplicates LOL Is there some way that is more efficient than splitting the files? When I look at the sync screen, I don’t see anything distinguishing direct lines from collateral lines. How do you handle this? As a retired secretary, when I get a match on Family Search and their file has numerous alternate names that are all the same, the secretary in me gets involved in just cleaning up the file. I know, as a friend of mine says, it’s a personal problem. LOL Anyway, looking for suggestions that might work for me. Re: [LegacyUG] Private events
Thanks. That's what I was finding. I guess the easiest way to change it is to change the tick box on the main event screen to not private and come up with another name for those that need to stay private for the time being, or just remember to tick the box to begin with. Like I said, it was obvious that I needed to do some housekeeping, so that is what I'm doing. RE: [LegacyUG] Problem With Descendant Book Report
Tom, Have you tried resetting to the default settings for this particular report and see if this clears up your problem? On the Descendant Book Report Options page, see in the lower right hand corner the box ‘Reset’ MEL From: Tom Weiss [mailto:tomgwe...@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 18, 2015 9:11 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Problem With Descendant Book Report Thanks Susie - glad you solved your problem, but the private box was ok for me. Anyone have in other ideas? I pulled up a file from 2013, and it has the same problem. I thought I was going nuts as the new events were there where I added them but only the old events were appearing in the report and not the additions. Once un-clicked, they all appeared as they should. Check that your problem doesn't have anything to do with Privacy options - either for people, events, entries, or reports. Re: [LegacyUG] Oh-oh!
Hi Brian, Sorry about this. I've seen this on a smaller scale but couldn't reproduce it. Your easiest way (unless this group is larger) would be to search on Modified Date and tag and export all those modified after the date of a backup that's OK. Then merge or use Split screen and copy and paste change details. If it is a larger group, again use Split Screen with one side using a backup that's OK and the other the one where the location has changed so that you don't have to research what the correct location is. Keep an eye on whether it was one location that was changed to the wrong one or a mix. I think the bug is something to do with merging locations and a wrong merge happens. Re: [LegacyUG] Oh-oh!
Does this type of thing just happen on its own Kathy or Brian OR was there some type of user error. If it just happens, that doesn't provide a whole lot of confidence as to integrity of the data entered. It is a bit more concerning than oh-oh. Can anyone explain why it happened? Re: [LegacyUG] Direct Line Ancestor
Another option is to Set relationship so that the people you are more interested in show a relationship and the others don't. You can add relationship to columns on Index View and Descendant View though it's less relevant there. The relationship should show above the main couple in Family View. If it doesn't, check your colour settings. You may have the text colour the same as the background. Then just work on the ones that are related - but whether that's a wise strategy depends where and when you are researching. In some places the families are inter-related multiple times and if you don't trace the surrounding families you don't realise this. Cathy Ila East wrote: Thanks. I found I was getting side tracked with syncing with Family Search and working on collateral lines instead of my direct lines. I thought I was being smart and exported my direct line ancestors. [LegacyUG] Birth parents vs. adoptive parents
How does one prove a set of birth parents in the case of an adopted child where a new birth certificate was issued? I've thought of looking for birth registers and newspaper articles. Are there other resources? Please feel free to point me at other resources/user groups if this isn't the appropriate place to ask this question. Also, how could I use the Research Guidance tool to help me find places to look?
