[LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0385

2014-01-21 Thread Darlene Don Hicks
Last evening I downloaded Legacy 8.  Everyone in my file, 37,000 people, all
have date problems with a little red ! by it.  I am aware of the (from
1960)exp. change and have started changing that.  The program states that 21
November 1898 is incorrect as a date format.  I have gone through the
'customize changes' but it still isn't fixed.  Do I have to close Legacy 8
before these changes take effect?  If there is no fix, except individually
correcting them,  can I still go back to Legacy 7.5 which is still on my
computer?  Can a person have two Legacy files both Legacy 7.5 and Legacy
8.0.0385, and use them interchangeably?

Your data is saved when you click Save on the edit window that you're in.

If you're referring to backing up the Family File, the reminder only
pops up when you have made changes to the data in the Family File.

If you have somehow turned off the pop-up reminder, go to Options
Customize . Other  and click on the 'Turn On or Off Optional Reminder
Messages.  The back up prompt is in the Prompts/Reminders tab.

There's no Save on Exit  - just a backup prompt.

The Backup doesn't happen automatically. You get a prompt to do the
backup, but you have a choice whether or not you want to do it.

Glad you got the *prompt* to *backup* restored.

Re: [LegacyUG] Same sex marriage.

2012-07-09 Thread Darlene Don Hicks
My genealogy is about blood lines.  I haven't found any gays in my family, but
if I did, I would not list them as partners.  Unmarried is my term for those
who did not marry a spouse of the oppocite sex.
I can surely see why Legacy doesn't want to add gays to their family tree.
There are many who feel the way I do.  Now, I know some put these gays together
as a couple and even the adopted that went along with this union, but it isn't
the truth.  Gays are a very small percentage of this country, and no matter how
loud they scream for this option, it would not be accepted by the other 93% of
us Christians.  If this ever happens, I will be one who chooses not to use
Legacy any longer.

It is about blood lines as when two people marry the child of this marriage has
the blood of both and therefore a blood line.  The person of the couple that is
your aunt or uncle is a direct bloodline being siblings to your parent.

Rather than answer each email individually, I have placed a PDF file

This might be a good topic for a Legacy Webinar??

Hi,

I was able to get in familysearch.org about two weeks ago, but when I tried
it just now, it failed to log me in.  I wonder why they do this when it will
become availabe for us soon?  It sure doesn't make any sense.  Actually I have
used that site since about 2002, with no problems.  If they don't stop this,
maybe we will have to remove our trees on ancestry.com.  I have clicked on
several trees, already, and some of the trees are gone.  Just a thought!

Re: [LegacyUG] Unknown given name solution

2011-03-27 Thread Darlene Don Hicks
I, also have done this for several years.  I took the time to change my 20,000
plus database and changed everyone that I didn't know the name of to husband of
or wife of or child of.  Then when I find two mary's without last names I know
exactly which one to link.  So, I do it even when I have a first but no last
name or if I just have a last name but no first name. The brackets around them
keep these things from printing when sharing information. To me it is the
perfect solution!

Kathy,

That's the method I use, except for one extra addition.  When I find a person
without knowing their first name in put for e.g., [[husband of John Doe]] The
double square brackets indicate that it's private, and won't normally be
transferred via GEDCOM or when printing any family sheets, Etc.

This then means I can see on screen when I don;t have full details for someone,
but I'm not passing on any erroneous to anyone else.

Darlene,

Legacy does not have a setting which will privatise your files (as distinct
from privatising an individual for reports), so you need to look at your
computer settings. You do not say what your operating system is, but you may
have it set for these files to read only, if so you need to enable file
sharing. How you do this, and the other possibilities depends on your
operating system.

Your family file is probably safe and secure so relax.

Assuming other programs are opening just fine in Windows, something has happened
to the executable file for Legacy or one of its necessary supporting files. I
can think of many reasons why this would happen but none of which are worthy of
discussing on this forum. Which means your quickest and easiest solution is to
re-install the program. Don't worry...re-installing the program changes nothing.
But you might want to save your existing .USR files ahead of time unless
re-customizing the program to your likings is easily accomplished.

Just out of curiosity, did anyone have access to your computer while you were on
vacation, especially anyone under the age of 16?

Sounds like you have a registry problem. I would try and uninstall, if you

I'm wondering if Darlene's problem is not indicative of a failing hard drive?
Problems opening specific files are usually ownership problems (a Windows
thingie...not to be concerned about it unless the computer is used by multiple
people), or file corruption (which is the failing hard drive.) Well, we can
wonder for hours here but it looks like this is not really a Legacy problem but
rather an OS or hardware problem.

Just to be on the safe side, I'd make sure that the family file is immediately
backed up to a CD/DVD.

do a Windows update download and this may have been where the problem
was. Every time I update Windows there seems to be some kind of
  problem.

Thank you so much for your quick response to my cry for help. I
  really appreciate it!

  Darlene,

Sounds like you have a registry problem. I would try and uninstall,
  if you
can (it may not be possible) but in any event I would install the
program again. You may still find a problem, in which case you should
be able to uninstall, if you couldn't the first time, and then
  reinstall again.

If men through fear, fraud or mistake, should in terms renounce and give up any
essential natural right, the eternal law of reason and the great end of society,
would absolutely vacate such renunciation; the right to freedom being the gift

voluntarily become a slave.

I guess notnot after a long, long thread that ended up with an Oops, never
mind.

But in retrospect we all can learn that any user can become wrongly convinced
about the behavior of Legacy and it just takes time and patience by us all to
figure out the problem. No big deal. That's why this group exists.

I guess we aren't worried about the folks on dial-up anymore.
