Re: [LegacyUG] protection for Legacy program in PC

2022-04-02 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Hello Jack,

Sadly, there is no way to protect against these things other than the actions
you have already taken...backups. The only other advice I can give is to have a
directory with all your "setup" files in it. I have one named "Installed PC
Software" which gets backed up to external storage every week. Iy has Legacy
9.0 setup file in it along with all the other software I have installed in it.

I suspect that when they re-installed Windoze they did so by overwriting the
existing partition so your data was lost. I have to say that I haven't had any
BSOD with Windoze 10, but that doesn't help you.

I can't stress enough to people how to follow the 3, 2, 1 backup strategy...3
backups, 2 different device type, 1 off site (could be a web site ie OneDrive
etc). Personally, I run several websites so I have unlimited webspace that I
back my system up too.

Sorry for your issues.

Best regard

Kevin

Subject: [LegacyUG] protection for Legacy program in PC

I'll ask my question first and then give you the circumstances under which my
problem happened.
Question: Is there any way to protect the Legacy Program on my PC when Windows
Support has to uninstall/reinstall my windows 10 because of a blue screen crash?

My new laptop PC is 2 months old and I have had 6 blue Screen crashes. The
manufacturer, Geek squad and Windows Support have all tested the PC. Windows
Support as part of their process uninstalled and reinstalled Windows 10. This
left my Legacy 9 with all updates in very bad condition. My Deluxe version was
gone and the standard version didn't show any family files left in it. I
restored deluxe through my Customer number and was able to restore my family
files. The process also deleted Legacy Family Tree backups. I have always had
backups. OneDrive cloud storage and backups on plug in drives. It wasn't an
easy talk finding everything but I did manage to restore files, etc.

I plan to go back to the manufacturer and get a refund on the return of the PC.
I would like to know what can be done to protect Legacy program and its files
if I ever have to have this done again.

Any ideas concerning this would be appreciated.

Re: [LegacyUG] Windows 11

2021-11-05 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Roy,

If you are computer savvy and know how to use regedit then there may be a hack
around this if the issue is the TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Monitor). Basically,
it is an onboard chip to help protect your computer. It is possible to install
one 'after-market' but I am sure that would void any warranty you may have. I
believe that sometimes they are onboard but just not activated. I would contact
the people you bought the computer off and ask them if yours has one.

Re: [LegacyUG] Windows 11

2021-11-05 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Rita,

It has been reported that Legacy works just fine on Windows 11. As you are
buying a new computer it should be compatible with Windows 11 but it is easy
enough to check. Go to Settings > Updates and Security and it may tell you
there right away. If not, then you can check on the Microsoft website.
Personally, as support for Windows 10 doesn't come to an end until 2025 I am in
no hurry to upgrade from Windows 10 Pro. I will let others iron the bugs out! 

On that subject I understand that Windows 11 is going to be releasing updates
only every 6 months rather than every time you turn around like it does with
Windows 10 so that is good.

Bets regards

It really has nothing to do with how many people are using it, it has to do

My suggestion is to replace the Legacy Cloud backup option with a second PC
option. Users who like two backups could set it up from within the program. For
example, have option one point to a local drive and the second could point to a
cloud location. I do this now but it involves a separate backup program.

If you like the idea, please let the developers know via Request Feature option.

Yes, many of the genealogy software programs only allow you to attach image
files, not PDFs. If you have access to a full version of Adobe Acrobat, not
just the free reader, you can save PDF files as JPG or other image formats.
There are also quite a few free converter apps. cnet.com is a
reliable source for such free apps. Another trick that I have used is making a
screen capture of the image and saving it as a jpg, instead of downloading it.
Depending on your computer the PRNT SCRN key or the windows snip app will work.
But try both as they have a big difference in quality for the jpg file they
produce. For me, the windows snip feature works better than the PRNT SCRN
button, as I can select what I want to capture.

You seem to have missed the whole point! As usual.

I would NEVER leave my computer on all the time. When I use it, I turn it on.
When I am done, I shut it down. I can't afford to keep it on all the time!!

I have always set all my settings to NOT do any updates without first notifying
me. These last two just did it on their own, and have wiped out all my files.
That is so very wrong! All my data on the family files which has taken me years
to gather are cleaned out. I have nothing now! Do you think I have enough time
to start over again? I did make backips as I should, but they have disappeared
as well. I do have some backups from 2017, and may just have to work with that,
but it's a real disappointment.

I tried to do a Restore tonight. And it ran for six hours, but got nowhere, and
now I can't even find what I had before. It's destroyed all my settings,
programs, and files. There is no recourse. I am done!

Thanks for your help [sort of] Cathy, but don't bother.

[LegacyUG] Best HTML Generator for GEDs

2019-07-05 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Hello,

I seem to recall that a few weeks/months ago there was some discussion about
products for creating web pages from a GED file. I am looking for something
that will include the pictures from Legacy if such a beast exists. I am not
necessarily looking for the cheapest, but rather the best. I have my own web
space so I don't need anything that provides that, indeed I would rather NOT
use one. I am going to be password protecting the site and giving access to my
extended family only.

Any suggestions?

Re: [LegacyUG] Backing up to the cloud

2019-06-04 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Declan and Michelle

Speaking as a former IT professional (retired and loving it) I have a few
comments to make on the 'changes' that seem to have people (including myself) a
little worried and upset.

1) We understand that bad things happen to computer systems (hardware and
software) which is exactly why we need backups. That having been said customer
facing systems MUST be priority if a business is to say in business. A server
should NOT take more than a day to rebuild and there should be a 'failover'
system.

2) All software changes should be thoroughly tested before rolling them out,
especially customer facing applications, however, I do understand and
acknowledge that you were hit from left field by MyHeritage programmers. This I
could easily understand being not your fault, however, you are supposed to both
be the same company. Communication and project management would prevent this.
It actually makes me wonder what kind of cowboys are employed there. Do you
have a team that understand that the customer is king. Often misguided,
demanding, rude and ungrateful, but KING (or queen). You simply can't treat
your customers with such offhandedness and not expect a backlash.

3) Daily updates on progress (be it positive or negative) is always better than
silence or half baked promises. Communication is key. People react better when
they see things happening. Your PR department (if one exists) must be
proactive, if you don't have one then someone needs to be the mouthpiece for
the company.

4) Suggesting that people backup to the cloud is a little like saying, we don't
care anymore, there are other solutions out there. Whereas this is true I
suggest that everyone read the small print before using some of the Cloud
services offered. Some site 'claim' the rights to any files loaded on to them.

I am trained in Six Sigma and Lean Processing and I can share this with you,
nothing is more important than the Voice of the Customer. Lose the customer,
lose your business.

I love Legacy. It has always been an awesome product for keeping ancestry
information structured and help identify areas for future and further research
and it would be a shame if all that was to be forgotten by lack of
communication and lack of customer focus.

 Respectfully your

Kevin

Hi Michele I have had great response from you with previous questions and thank

from my heritage as to why things are going wrong, why did they have to change
their API for example no explanation given. I think the users of Legacy deserve
much better answers. The Map problem is a laugh while other companies have no
problems to my knowledge, yet there is no real explanation as to what is
happening apart from soft changing coding. what stage are the programmers
at ,are they near fixing it or miles away from it, Why is it taking so long
surely they can give us some kind of info to help us to be patient. It has been
a long time now. Sadly I have been looking at other programmes with maps
considering moving, never dreamed I would do this as I had been very happy with
Legacy. Maps was very important to me as I am sure to others as well. But it is
getting very frustrating, waiting, waiting, waiting but no news of any kind.
Very sad. Please I know its not your fault and please to give me “they dont

The problem with the Hints has nothing to do with the server. MyHeritage had an

The Legacy download IS housed on the broken server so we parked a copy on the

Re: [LegacyUG] Home network question - Legacy 9 Deluxe

2019-04-15 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Hi John

Although this doesn't strictly answer your question I believe it would 'maybe'
work for you. I use the cloud backup feature of Legacy to keep multiple PC's
'current'. One I use all the time, the other is my 'hot backup'. If you backup
multimedia files this way then when you restore on the other computer Legacy
will rebuild your structure. I don't keep my media files in the Legacy
directory but I link to them. I also do a weekly backup of all my files
(website, work files, ancestry, documents, pictures etc.) every week onto one
of two external drives (I flip flop each week). It has got me out of disaster
more than once. The script to automatically back up the directories is a DOS
BAT file.

A sample script is available here:
http://www.abbydalesystems.com/windows.php#bkup It is totally free. If you need
any help please let me know.

Hi

Interesting problem, and my first question is 'why did you do it that way?'

All pre-1911 census records can be indexed by the Head of the family or by
a location & page number (better if there are multiple families on the sheet).
Individual 1911 census records can be indexed by the Head of the family and the
summary sheets as before. Equally, BMD images must relate to one or more
individuals, especially for parish records, which can be used to index them
which I then extend with the date of the event. I have also structured the
media folder into separate sub-folders by census year, births, marriages,
deaths etc. which simplifies the file name system.

However, somehow you need to build a list of the existing images and
associate them against a list of new names, and then process them.

How good is your VBA since that will be only way to do it and, depending on
exactly how you you want to structure the new file names, can be built to do it
automatically. Yes, it can be done, but you will need to work through the
tables to identify what you need to find and update, and also make the change
to the file as well. Alternatively you could write an external program to do it.

It happens that I am a programmer and have worked on Access VBA, and I
would need several attempts to write something to do it and test it out. Of
course working on a backup copy until I was 100% happy that it was correct and
that Legacy still liked it.

Otherwise, it is the slow 'do it by hand' method. Change the file name,
open the individual or event and manually re-identify the file - the media
relinker is pretty well useless at that job if you let it try to locate the
image, which no longer exists.

Chris

All,

I suspect i already know the answer but.

I have a LOAD of media files that have the name Unknown(xxx), where xxx is a
number. I have tagged the files (in Windows Explorer) as to whether they are
1911 UK census images or UK BMD entries.

What I would like to do is rename, at the very least, the Census files to a
standard 1911 England Census(xxx) format so that I at least have all the Census
files in order.

Is there any way to bulk rename the files to replace the Unknown with 1911
England Census without having to do each one individually ?

Alternatively, does anyone have a schema for the data tables that I could use
to cook up my own Access query to try and achieve the desired outcome ?

Thanks in advance,

Chris Swann

I am from New Zealand and use ' xtra.co.nz'.

When the first email came through, on I think it was 10 Oct., I sensed it was
'Spam', didn't open and next morning

with more coming in knew it was spam so immediately went and moved them to my

As a result I have had none in my inbox as all go immediately to spam and have

I have noticed from a quick look at the ones in the spam that many people were
actually forwarding

these emails on to everyone again by asking a question or making a statement
about the email.

Please never forward or answer a SPAM email!

To those who have done this please take time to make yourself aware of the
content and addresses of the

emails you have coming in before opening and forwarding on to other people so
as not to cause a massive

problem like this again.

Take time to check out what a 'spam email' could look like and never answer it,
if unsure leave it wait, and check.

I guess the moral of the story is:

I would really warn people about the April upgrade too. It seems like it is a

[LegacyUG] MyHeritage DNA test

2018-01-21 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Hello,

I have the results from a Myhertiage DNA test. I have one for myself and my
wife. How do I go about adding this to my Legacy family tree? The DNA test was
an autosumal test but I don't see that listed on the add DNA screen.

The results are rather intriguing and I have no idea how far back the tests
would go back to but as far as I can see the test results don't match the
research I have (I am back to 1780). I find no North African, Nigerian nor
Finnish connection in my direct line ancestors. I agree with the English
portion though :). It is a little bit surprising not to find any Celtic markers
given that my name is Ferguson, my paternal grandmother was MacDonald and I
have documented proof of Scottish kin on my mother's side. It is all rather
perplexing and I have no idea why it should be so puzzling. My father's
ancestors didn't even leave the county of their births for 300 years!

Any assistance would be greatfullly received.

Best regards

Kevin Ferguson

Re: [LegacyUG] How can update my other computer for Legacy

2018-01-11 Thread Kevin Ferguson
It depends on what you want to update. The Legacy software itself, you data
files or your colateral documentation (i.e. Census prints, certificate copies,
pictures etc.). I keep my machines at the same Legacy levels by manually
updating one, then after a brief test period I update the other. My main
datafile is backed up in the Legacy cloud and I simply restore it on my second
machine. The colateral files I use an external drive for backup so I simply
copy that to the second machine if needed. (I use the same file path layout on
both machines).

Hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] MyHeritage DNA test

2017-12-02 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Hi there,

I ordered a MyHeritage DNA kits for my wife and I and I wanted to know how to
input the results into Legacy. I clicked on the DNA symbol in the "Individual
Information" screen but didn't see an entry for MyHeritage DNA service. I find
this odd as the email I got from Legacy seemed to be endorsing the MyHeritage
DNA kits.

Has anyone managed to add their results to Legacy and if so, how?

Thank you for any pointers.

Best regards

Kevin

Re: [LegacyUG] Print Report Formats

2017-10-03 Thread Kevin Ferguson
It sure doesn't look like HTML. In HTML it would be enclosed in <>. i.e.
Text to be in italics <, i> It could well be PCL code though. Oh and I doubt
it is XML either. ;)

Thank you for your response. I agree with you comment but I can not get Legacy
to do any thing about it. That's really the disgusting part of the problem.

This looks suspiciously like html code : \i - open italic and \i0 close italic.
I am not a programmer so I could well be wrong.

you seem to be showing old style codes Legacy used to use.
Is the Preview showing the code or just the actual print?

eg I'm wondering whether the problem is in Legacy or between Legacy and your
printer.

Does the problem go away if you re-apply the italics?

I have Legacy 7.5 on my computer (as a tester) and it uses the new style code
with the small double arrows - Guillemets.

You could contact Support. They may be able to update the codes throughout your
file if that's the problem. However, I can't speak for them.

I have been using Legacy Family since the version 7 years. I try to
use a number of the reports supplied by the Legacy. Since the
beginning I have had problems with some of the output formats. Seems
to happen mostly in the output of the list programs. In stead of
simply listing the "item name' the program prints the "item name" plus
what appears to be a programing instruction before and after the "item
name". For example: if the newspaper name New York Times is to be
printed the report output will be \i New York Times \i0 will appear.
At first I thought it might have something to do with the printer
interface but I have gone through several different kinds of printers
and still the same problem. Unfortunately, this makes print reports
options useless for me. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hello,

Thank you everyone for your assistance. It looks like I have a good solution. I
guess my follow on question isis there a way to automatically generate a
"to list' based on this source?

Kevin,
There are special templates for this though for some reason they include a box
for the sub-district which isn't part of the index unless it is for recent
years.
The templates aren't in an obvious place as first you have to choose
certificate.
eg: Birth records - birth certificate - England - birth certificate index -
online database.

I'm using the template for the new GRO indexes for birth and death at the GRO
but still have a Basic style source for the old GRO indexes available all over
the place.

Cheers,
Cathy

Try FileZilla for uploading webpages. It is drag and drop and easy to
setup...and free.

Sorry, I may have misled, I want to use legacy and not TNG, I already have a
TNG site and I can never remember how to use it.
I was hoping that Legacy had a method to upload directly to a web site.

Joanne and Ian,

That's what TNG is all about! Basically, you simply upload your gedcom and
you're in business. Yes, you need to make a couple decisions then, but TNG has
some great tutorials that will take you through it. And you can choose from
about 15 templates to get the look you want. Should you ever wish to customize
the template, there are many ways to do so, or you can easily find someone on
the TNG Users group or TNG Forum who will do it for you for a modest cost.

I have a TNG site up but have no clue how to manage it and am far too slow to
remember the basics. I want to be able to just upload my data to a restricted
web page, set permissions and then sleep until the next update is created.

Re: [LegacyUG] Web page creation

2017-07-26 Thread Kevin Ferguson
Hi Ian

Restricting the webpages will have to be done either through a piece of code on
your website (not very safe or efficient) or by using .htaccess, which will
depend on what web hosting site you are using. I usually create a CD with the
webpages on it and use autorun code so that my non-computer literate relatives
can just stick the CD in and it will run.

[LegacyUG] Globally editting source details

2012-02-25 Thread Kevin Ferguson

Hello everyone This is my first posting here so please forgive me should I
violate any policies. :) I have been a little stupid (nothing new there) and
when I added source detail for GRO BMD certificates I failed to add any text in
the Detail Text field. Now I realize that was something I shouldn't have done
but I have hundreds of folks attached to different certificates but none of
them have any text detail. Is the only way to right my mistake to go back and
redo or is there a way of globally changing these detail records for each
particular entry? Best regardsKevin Ferguson
