Re: [LegacyUG] Mac use
Thanks, Pam. I consider myself pretty computer literate in most situations. I'm just totally unfamiliar with Macs. And I do currently have Legacy on both my desktop and laptop. Thanks for the tip about the RAM. Mary On Sat, May 10, 2014 at 1:50 AM, Pam Gosling pg...@comcast.net wrote: Hello Mary, I just added Legacy to a Mac Book Air laptop, using VM Fusion to load Windows on it first. You have to have MS Windows to run Legacy, the Mac is the “host” system but the Fusion(or Parallels) makes a “virtual” machine where both operate together, and Legacy works just fine on a Mac once you get it set up. Others on the list ( or your son?) that are more computer savvy can help you with loading it, which can be tricky to make sure it’s loaded and saved correctly. I have always been a Windows user and need Windows for my job, but now also use the Mac for other things so having both on a laptop works really well for me, it just depends on what programs you like to use. You CAN have Legacy on 2 computers, e.g. one home and one laptop, just can’t use them simultaneously, unless you’d rather not complicate things.. .??!! but totally optional . . . . If you son knows computers, he can help you, or I got help with it from a sales person at the local Apple store if you need more information. The only question you might want to ask is how much memory storage you need to run Windows, for me, I needed to do a custom order for a Mac with more memory or RAM ??(unless it can be upgraded) than the standard stock Macs so that it won’t work too slowly. But again, ask someone else who knows computers better than I, your situation might be different. [LegacyUG] potential problems and events
I have things like obituary, burial (cemetery), funeral, etc. set up as events and of course there date follows the date of death, making them show up as potential problems. Two questions... Is there a way to globally turn off event after death as a potential problem? Why, when I right click and check event after death to exclude it as a PP on an individual record, does it continue to show up? I should clarify. After selecting to exclude events that occur after death, they no longer show up on a printed report, but the problem icon still appears on the individual screen. At the top middle of the window, you can place a check mark on Exclude from PP report. Save this event definition and close and you are back in Legacy where you started (family view). This should prevent the Tombstone, Obituary, or whatever event you have selected to exclude from giving you a red circle. This is the best way, since you are editing the characteristics at the global level for the event. My previous message works for just that one person. Hope this helps. [LegacyUG] Installing on Second computer
I installed Legacy 8 on my laptop a couple of days ago and unlocked the Deluxe version. Today I decided it was time to update the software on my desktop so downloaded the free version of Legacy 8 and was expecting the need to enter my Deluxe Customer # to unlock Deluxe on that computer. Imagine my surprise when it opened for the first time with Deluxe unlocked. I don't remember this being the case in the past? So far I am loving just about every new change I've encountered. I was anxious for shared events and expected to use it in recording census data. But since we can't edit the description field for each participant, those plans are going to have be reevalulated for my person preferences. Everything else seems like great improvements. My biggest complaint is that I didn't use Legacy when I first started computerizing my family files. I'm sorry for being unclear. I was attempting to add sources to an individual record prior to exiting. When clicking on the icon to save source clipboard to all used fields I began getting the error message. I ran mile maintenance with no success (the error continued to occur) This morning with a clear head, I did what was probably the obvious and deleted the source clipboard contents. Problem solved. Re: [LegacyUG] Error 3314
Thanks, Sherry. As I submitted earlier, the problem was solved by simply clearing the clipboard. Prior to that doing file maintenance twice didn't solve the problem. I also tried importing an earlier backup from before the error occurred and that didn't work. But clearing the clipboard did . Thanks for responding. [LegacyUG] source clipboard strange behavior
I've been experiencing some what I regard as strange behavior with the source clipboard in the last couple of days. I've been entering some information I found on a family tree on Ancestry. I have saved to the source clipboard the name of the person who submitted the tree and the name of the tree itself, rather than just using the generic Ancestry family member trees. I also put the web address in the text tab of the source. So I've been working on this for a couple of days and along the way I've stopped for a break and shut Legacy down. Each of the last four or five times I've done this I've discovered when I start again, the source on my clipboard is not rather garbled. The main tab says public member tree, and has only a 1 in the date field. The text/comment tab contains tree. The first time it happened I assumed I had accidently hit a key at some point and caused it to be garbled. It's now done it at least five times, maybe more. I correct my source data, save it and replace the source information for that person and proceed, but the next time I shut down it happens again. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8 revealed - Shared Events and Automatic Sorting
Thanks, Brian. I'm not sure I made my question very clear. I was referring to your explanation that if you choose to share a standard census event with other people, then household member would automatically be inserted in the description field for those additional people. I was expecting that Legacy will not do that if I share a census event I have created. Since it's a custom event, I imagined Legacy would have no way of knowing it should treat it as a census unless the programming is sophisticated enough to recognize I've retained the word census in my name. I label mine 1810 U.S. Census, 1820 U.S. Census, etc. I would think there is no reason for Legacy to treat those any differently than it my event were named Vacation Taken (I don't really have an event named that--trying to illustrate my point). On the other hand I can see that it is a fairly straightforward programming task for the program to treat the standard census event as you described. Is my question any clearer, or have I just been more confusing? On Mon, Jul 15, 2013 at 12:56 PM, Geoff Rasmussen ge...@legacyusers.comwrote: Very interesting question. I'll look into it Mary. [LegacyUG] Shared information
Wondering how the rest of you source information you get from someone else's family tree online, a shared gedcom, etc. Do you show that person as your source or do you show their primary source (if you are lucky enough to be able to have them?). For instance, if Relative X provided me with the names of a new generation of grandparents and she shows the 1880 U.S. Census, Indiana birth records, and Indiana Marriage records as her sources. You haven't looked at those sources yourself and assuming you don't have access to them at this time, would you show Relative X as your source and maybe make a note of where she got her information? I wouldn't consider this a proven grandparent until I myself had verified sources, but I'm just wondering how you all treat this sort of thing. Sometimes, for collateral people in my tree, I'm not going to spend the time to look up all those sources. Same sort of thing, when you import data from another Gedcom, I know you can autosource each field with information, but that doesn't carry through the original sources unless I am doing something wrong? Re: [LegacyUG] Shared information
Thanks, Cheryl. That's pretty much what I've been doing. Otherwise it gets pretty tedious if I am typing it all in myself from an online family tree. There are times I don't want to do an import and have to deal with the differences in how we all enter information. But I wondered if I was being lazy in my treatment of sourcing. The examples I gave probably weren't the best. Sometimes they might reference a document they have in their possession or they saw first hand in someone else's possession. I don't feel quite right using that as my primary source since I didn't see it. I'll continue what I've been doing I guess. If it's a direct line ancestor I'd definitely go into more detail and care with the sourcing documentation. Thanks . I'm wanting something to alert me that I've changed it for a reason sort of a you've previously customized this..are you SURE you want to return to default settings? When you have an event open, look for the Sentence Override tab, alongside the Notes one. You may find that useful in some of your situations. Amen...exactly what I was trying to say, but didn't say nearly as well. The database operates with 2 main tables. One for individuals and another for marriages. There are many other tables that also come into play to store various things. If a person is linked to another person it is done with the marriage record. That record can link spouses and children of the marriage. Without a marriage record there are no connections to other individuals. It's that simple. The check box in the individual record can be used to indicate that there are no marriage records linked for the purpose of connecting a spouse. If a marriage record is linked, then that box is grayed-out because the presence of a marriage record makes the option invalid. An individual cannot be linked to offspring without a marriage record. Thus an individual with This individual never married and had no children checked is shown with the exclamation mark to indicate end-of-line. The check box in the marriage record can be used to indicate that there are no children linked to the marriage. If there are children linked, then that box is grayed-out because the presence of a child makes the option invalid. If an individual has marriage records and every one of them has the This couple had no children checked, then that individual is end-of-line but there is no symbol to indicate that like it does for the never married individual. In summary...Legacy already allows both situations to be recorded but does not display an end-of-line symbol for someone with marriage records and no offspring. [LegacyUG] Re: location names
Sorry I tagged onto another thread. I'm new to the usergroup and couldn't find how to start a new thread myself (plus it's late a night--that's my excuse). I'm not suggesting changing name locations. Just the opposite. I'm constantly finding people showing a U.S. city in a county that simply didn't exist at the given date. They've either copied from someone else who did the same thing, or they have changed what the original record showed. I want to preserve the original record and be historically correct at the same time. For awhile I solved the pre/post colonial U.S. issue by simply not putting any country. But I've been recently reminded that there are people in other countries (I'm joking here.). My software very easily can go in and put either U.S.A. or United States after all the locations it recognizes as being states. But that just doesn't work for pre-revolution dates and I have a lot of those. I appreciate your comment about the four fields not working for all countries. Re: [LegacyUG] Re: location names
Thanks, Scott. I've always felt it was important to use the location as it existed at the time of the event. In the past I didn't bother to put USA so the issue of pre-revolutionary times didn't really come up. Over the last couple of weeks I've been setting up a new family file for my husband and decided since it had been many years since I started mine and I've certainly made changes along the way, that maybe I should get some imput and do it right this time. I've valued all the various opinions. At the end of the day, I agree, we have to do what works for us and suits our long term goals. Thanks again everyone. Mary On Wed, Jun 5, 2013 at 6:53 PM, snort...@comcast.net wrote: Hi Mary, Your basic question is one I have wrestled myself. Before I go to my solution I would like to share a few thoughts with you. I rarely give input to the questions asked on the Legacy UG, but this time is one of my exceptions. I always find it interesting to see so many individuals who have very strong opinions on so many topics. This topic is one where some individuals seem to be too lazy to do the research on colonial or territorial America and/or are too lazy to enter it into their programs. There is always an excuse about 3 place names vs. 4 place names, or everybody knows where New York or Connecticut is located, or no country existed at that time, or it facilitates sorting data, or it's something else. Keep in mind, some people outside the U.S. may use your data in the future. Not everyone is as familiar with the history of the U.S. as we are. You need to decide how detailed or accurate you want your data to be. The United States has an interesting history fraught with many challenges regarding place names. We have had British Colonies, Territories, Indian lands, Unorganized areas, along with lands acquired from other countries like Spain, France, Russia, Mexico, and some I have likely missed. State, territory, and county lines frequently changed resulting in records being located in repositories in one state or county today that were different than at the time of the original event. Each area brings new challenges and will cause you to rethink your own rules for place names. What I have discovered is there is no uniform position on the subject you inquired about, although I think there should be. For what it is worth, I believe all events should be identified with a place name as accurate as you can determine at the time of the original event. You could end up with entries that look like these examples: 3 May 1644 Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British America 10 Jul 1646 Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut Colony, British America 10 Aug 1847 Great Salt Lake Valley, , Alta California Territory, Mexico 3 Mar 1848 Great Salt lake Valley, , Unorganized Territory, United States 7 Sep 1861 Fort Bridger, Green River, Utah Territory, United States The bottom line is do what you think is right, hopefully with some logic and historical basis for your choice, and not because it is easy or because research is hard. Regardless of your choice ... Good luck.
