Ancestry's resources easily tops My Heritage, so that is of a major concern, but then as the above link states, FTM was flogged off to the Ukraine. Everything boils down to money I suppose, until we can get software that'll write itself, but in giving us a healthy discount (for registered Legacy users), maybe My Heritage is thinking beyond the dollar. Ancestry meanwhile is happy to make the money, but doesn't give discounts to family tree contributors, my chief reason for sticking with Worldconnect all these years. I'll be happy to sit back and see what happens; realistically what other choice do I have. I'm interested in this topic though. Re: [LegacyUG] Millennia Sale to MyHeritage
I do not know about computer programming but I think it would have been better for all if Millennia had bitten the bullet a long time ago to update its technology to handle Unicode etc. I imagine the longer it has been left while adding more “bells and whistles”, the harder it has become to rewrite Legacy on new technology. Nations like US and Australia are very multicultural and increasingly so. To me, Unicode should be a core feature of any family history software. Meanwhile bells and whistles like graphs or plotting of migration or nationality are very inaccurate and gimmicky for people with ancestors from parts of the world where borders have frequently changed. The same person can have a “nationality” different to their ethnicity or language. They may have lived in the same location for their whole life but lived in several countries due to border changes etc. If you really want to know about your ancestors and their lives, you need research the history of the specific town/s they lived in. Many of the names will require Unicode. Even then, care must be taken because sometimes many different towns can have the same name. Therefore Google Maps can lead you astray- another reason why plotting locations can be very inaccurate or gimmicky. MyHeritage has Unicode and users from all over the world. It is hard to imagine why they would want Legacy unless they intend to rewrite it with Unicode or scrap it altogether. Since there is no intention to include Unicode in Legacy 10, maybe the latter is their intention. But who knows- reality is often stranger than fiction. If MyHeritage rewrites or changes Legacy, I only hopes it keeps its various screen views- uncluttered, aesthetically pleasing, easy to follow and navigate, easy to explain things to people who not family historians or genealogists etc. John From: Chris Hill Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2017 4:54 AM To: 'Legacy User Group' Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Millennia Sale to MyHeritage According to Microsoft’s support, the tools are not capable of converting an application automatically. Re: [LegacyUG] Millennia Sale to MyHeritage
Unicode is a character encoding system that can handle all the characters for all the languages in the world plus special characters. It is important to those with ancestors from Slavic/Eastern European, China, Japan, etc. These are areas which use alphabets that are not supported currently in Legacy. It may have no impact on you but many researchers do have ancestors whose names use these special alphabets and who lived in areas where place names are in those alphabets. Adding Unicode support to Legacy will greatly expand the potential user base. Re: [LegacyUG] Millennia Sale to MyHeritage
Brian My thoughts exactly. I have "bitten my tongue" about these issues for the last 6+ months. Even with the no-longer-supported VB6, Unicode can be supported - but that is not the sensible way to have proceeded. It would have required a complete rewrite, with old and clunky technology. { VB6 was released in 1998, and declared "legacy" by Microsoft in 2008.] With the "refactored" .NET Core* which Microsoft has produced, a complete rewrite would cater for Windows, MacOS, and Linux/Unix (if anyone was interested) with essentially the same codeset. * http://www.microsoft.com/net/core Ian Thomas Albert Park, Victoria 3206 Australia -Original Message- From: LegacyUserGroup [mailto:legacyusergroup-boun...@legacyusers.com] On Behalf Of Brian Kelly Sent: Friday, 4 August 2017 11:50 PM To: Legacy Test ; Legacy User Group Subject: [LegacyUG] Millennia Sale to MyHeritage Well it looks like there will be interesting times ahead for Millennia and the software with the merger/acquisition of Millennia by MyHeritage. Re: [LegacyUG] Millennia Sale to MyHeritage
Perhaps more interesting is that they are already referring to Legacy 10 only 6 months after Legacy 9 came out. That might indicate a plan to move to the way that Ancestry did with Family Tree Maker selling new versions every year – definitely not what we want as users. I would have expected any links to MyHeritage to be part of a free update and not part of a new version, with prices. Regarding Unicode, which any current system should support outside of the traditional Latin-based character sets, they will need to transfer from Visual Basic V6, which came out of support in 2005, to Visual Basic .NET. That is much more than just making additions and fixes to the current system, and will need a full redesign of it. Perhaps MyHeritage will be able to provide them with the funding and resources to do that.
