Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-30 Thread Pete Beatty
I have a setup similar to John's.
I have two machines: one for Daily use and one used on Travel.
I have a NAS installed at home with redundant hard drives.
The NAS can be accessed from the WEB (Double PASSWORD Protected).
The NAS retains the last edited version of the my data file.

When I finish updating my work data, on either machine. The Machine will
automatically update the modified files on the NAS.
When I power on either my Home or Travel machine, the first task the
machine performs is to sync with the NAS.
This makes sure that I am always working with the newest version.

In addition, both system will automatically backup the machine to the NAS,
daily.

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-30 Thread John Faulks
I have a NAS on my home network and all my files are there in a common
folder. I have previously tried two clouds (Dropbox and OneDrive) and both
slow things down noticeably. The other issue I have had with cloud drives
is occasional weird program issues that need more than the file maintenance
tools to fix (index errors as I recall). Key is to make sure you only have
one instance running at a time. With files on my NAS, I get a warning
when I forget and use a second PC. Also check all your settings are the
same - especially locations but also the starting family file. I now always
prompt for the opening file at startup after putting some new edits into an
older version. Fortunately search can find modified dates. And as always,
have a good backup plan.

Hi

I also just use the Legacy Cloud. When I got a 2nd laptop (for friends/
family tho still use it myself) I wanted Legacy on that too, so got a tip
off this group and now use their Cloud.
I do, however. also have my tree on Genes Reunited, and I have an external
hard drive backed up to this laptop.

All the best, Sarah Hughes

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-29 Thread limitless.eternity
I use Dropbox. The reason for it is that my family members in other locations
are able to see the exact same file. However, I do not put all my media there.
I keep my media on my hard drive, but I try to link all media that is
available online with an internet address in the sources, as well as
referencing the downloaded copy on my hard drive. This is because as far as I
can tell, Legacy uses what I’ve called a hard directory system rather than a
relative one. In other words, the link to the media takes you to the exact
place on the hard drive rather than moving up or down one directory from where
it already is. Again, my reasoning is based on access by other individuals
throughout the world, not just my own two or three computers that I could set
up exactly the same structure if I chose.

I do with there was a mobile version of it, though!

I live in a somewhat remote rural area where the broadband speed is
about 1.5 Mb/s, so I avoid doing anything via cloud. I simply transfer
.fdb files and appropriate media files via a USB memory stick. Quick and
easy. My backups are to an external hard disk.

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-12 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian Macaulay,

The Legacy database itself - the .fdb file has a size limit of 2 GB so
you don't have a 7 GB .fdb file. You may well have 7 GB of Legacy
related files if you are including your Media files.

Re the survey question.

To change computer I restore the latest data backup which has been saved
to Dropbox. I keep my Legacy Media in Dropbox.
Because my media paths use the [Default Media Folder] code, I just have
to set Options > Customise 6.2 to have media relinked. I don't change
computer often.
If I changed computer often, I'd keep my working database and media on
an external drive, making sure I had backups elsewhere and simply move
the drive from one computer to another.
Some people find it useful to use the Legacy Cloud backup to change
computer and restore from this backup. This is just the data file.

I never do that.  I take a backup daily of my files and they go on a
NAS drive.
I keep a dummy copy for show and tells, but never connect them to the
main files, So no on the fly updates.

I also do not understand how 700K names can result in 1 GB.  I have
less than 100K folks and run at well over 7GB of data.

I have spent thousands of hours (not sure I would want to know exactly
how many!) working on my database. I now have over 713,000 individuals
in my database, which is over 1GB in size. Frankly, I don't want to
lose all that time and work! So I use a cloud backup service
(BackBlaze) as a backup. Also, every time I make a change in my
database, I compact the file and then back it up to a flash drive and
also an external hard drive, using Allway Sync. It is very easy to
use. I just tell it to compare the relevant folders on my SSD drive
and my other drive and copy the files with the most recent dates to
the other drive. Just to be safe, I also do the same with my Google
Drive File Stream, so that my most recent Legacy database is always in
the cloud in two different forms, on my local SSD "hard" drive, and
also on two separate external drives, one hard drive and one flash drive.

I have a second laptop that I occasionally use. Whenever I want to
transfer my database to the other laptop, I use Allway Sync to do it.
It usually takes a minute or two to do the transfer. I already have
the most recent form of the database on one of my backup drives, so I
just attach one of those to the secondary computer, run Allway Sync,
and then I am up and ready to go.

Ian,

Those only connected by links to the data file.  I think you may be
looking at the size of the data folder.  If you have a lot of back ups
in it the folder could easily get to that size. the data file is the one
with (name).fdb.  For instance, my own data folder  has 16 days of back
up files and is 16.5 gb.  but my data file (name).fdb is only 516.740 kb.

2020-03-12 Thread Christopher Seward Sr.
Ronald, I would disagree. Ignoring a problem, or pretending that a
problem doesn't make you want to use a different solution, doesn't fix
the problem.  If Dennis is expressing that this issue is bothersome
enough to make him consider using a different product, knowing that I am
not the only one feeling that way helps me, and is hardly a waste of
time. Telling someone that they are wasting your time by complaining
about issues is non-productive, and does not offer a solution.

Ian,

The database file itself (*.fdb) contains only links to your media files. As
such it is indeed far smaller than the 7GB you quote.

Your 7GB is probably the backup size of the *.fdb file AND your media files
(pictures etc) stored on your pc.

Kind regards,

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-12 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Dennis and Gary,

What is your definition of ‘sync’? Are you wanting to work on your tree (same
file) from two computers? Or are you backing up to another location and wanting
to keep that file updated?

I doubt that any of the family tree programs will the ability to work with one
common file from two (or more) computers. (That would be a multi-user program
and, even then, the file would have to reside on one computer) So, you would
have to have the same program on your secondary computer and simply copy the
files to that computer. You do not have to a backup/restore, you could copy
the .fdb file (assuming changing only the data and not adding pictures). If you
make any changes to the tree then you would have to copy the file back again to
the main computer. Many people do this using a USB drive. This is handy if you
are going to another location and wanting to have your tree with you and make
changes to the file. On your return you would copy the file on to your home
computer and continue to work on it from there.

If you want to ‘sync’ the file on your main computer to another (backup) file
then there are many programs that can do that. But that is only a backup file.
If you backed up your main file to your secondary computer then any changes
made to that file on your secondary computer would not be reflected on your
main computer and that file would be overwritten on the next backup.

If you are wanting the ability to work on one file from two computers that can
be accomplished especially if the two computers are on the same network and
both are on. What I am saying is – it is possible to access the program (and
files) on your desktop computer from your laptop in your home. Then you are
working with only one file – that on the desktop, and one computer at a time.
But this is not giving you a backup.

I keep my computer backed up to two different external hard drives. My Legacy
file is also backed up to Dropbox and to Legacy backup. I also routinely back
up to a SD card and keep it in my safe. I do a quick copy of the .fdb file
before a Compact File or Check/Repair. I am in the process of installing
another internal drive on my desktop and I will either set it up as Raid 1
(where the second drive is a clone of the first and all files are continuously
updated) or I will use Acronis to do incremental backups of all files.
Overkill? Maybe. But I have been doing this for 40 years and have never had a
serious loss of data.

I'm a bit late to the party Gary, but I do the following from Win10:

(1) I most gratefully use a blindingly fast backup App called Bvckup 2
Pro, and do a general backup of say Legacy and anything else from my
Primary HD to the secondary drive.

(2) Bvckup 2 Pro has an amazing feature where you can run a batch file
after the program has finished. I use this feature to copy Legacy stuff
to two external drives, my Google Drive, and one USB 3.0 key.

Couldn't be happier to be honest.

Hope this helps others.

Under file properties you will find your Family File Information:

If you use Dropbox, set your family file folder to save to your Dropbox folder
– syncs every time as long as you only have Legacy open on one computer at a
time.

I have been using this for years with no issues – all relevant files will be
saved to this location.

Margaret,

On the second computer, copy the .fdb  into the data folder (it will
overwrite the old one) and copy any updated media folders to the second
computer also, and you in business and up to date on that computer.
This also works in reverse ie:  updating computer 1 from cpmputer 2.  I
will say that for this to work smoothly your paths to the files ( where
the Legacy folders are located)  should be the same on both computers.
If they are not, You will have to fiddle with the locations in the
options  6.2  and possibly 6.1.

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

I should clarify that in my case it is a thumb drive (16GB). I just carry it to
the other computer. The only trick is organizing the drive letters so that
everything can be found on either computer. I don’t ‘update’ the second
computer, other than backups. This avoids any accidental confusion on where the
latest changes were made. And, there is no such thing as trying to open the
same file on two different computer.

That’s why I’m considering changing. I”ve never found an easy way to do it.
I’ve always had to do a back-up/restore to move data between computers.

I also use a USB or External Hard Drive to backup - after backing up to my

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-12 Thread Ian Macaulay
I never do that. I take a backup daily of my files and they go on a NAS
drive.
I keep a dummy copy for show and tells, but never connect them to the main
files, So no on the fly updates.

I also do not understand how 700K names can result in 1 GB. I have less
than 100K folks and run at well over 7GB of data.
Something is skewey

Re: [LegacyUG] Survey - Syncing

2020-03-12 Thread Loren L. Johns via LegacyUserGroup
I have spent thousands of hours (not sure I would want to know exactly how
many!) working on my database. I now have over 713,000 individuals in my
database, which is over 1GB in size. Frankly, I don't want to lose all that
time and work! So I use a cloud backup service (BackBlaze) as a backup. Also,
every time I make a change in my database, I compact the file and then back it
up to a flash drive and also an external hard drive, using Allway Sync. It is
very easy to use. I just tell it to compare the relevant folders on my SSD
drive and my other drive and copy the files with the most recent dates to the
other drive. Just to be safe, I also do the same with my Google Drive File
Stream, so that my most recent Legacy database is always in the cloud in two
different forms, on my local SSD "hard" drive, and also on two separate
external drives, one hard drive and one flash drive.
I have a second laptop that I occasionally use. Whenever I want to transfer my
database to the other laptop, I use Allway Sync to do it. It usually takes a
minute or two to do the transfer. I already have the most recent form of the
database on one of my backup drives, so I just attach one of those to the
secondary computer, run Allway Sync, and then I am up and ready to go.

Your ‘survey’ comes at an interesting time since I am currently considering
abandoning Lecacy (after many years) because of the difficulty of
accomplishing this sync.
