You asked a question apparently to the whole group so I’ll ask a question, as a member of the group. Is your problem because of the sentence “Your post is coming through to the list” or the truths that follows below the sentence? Your communication was very unclear. I don’t personally know Darlene Don Hicks but the words they provide below the short sentence have a huge bearing on and are very pertinent to our collective legacy. Legacy as a software package is just a tool to aid in the documentation of history. The other words embody some of the important aspects of the history of this country. We have been reminded many times: Delete the footer after each message.Sign your message with name only, not quotations. Many on this list use dial-up connections, so we have been repeatedly asked to: Discuss Legacy software and add-ons only. Not add post scripts no matter how true we may feel they are. Many on this list are in foreign countries; many still use dial-up connections. The extras make it difficult for them and have nothing to do with Legacy software and add-ons. Let's be considerate. Re: [LegacyUG] subscribe - No, they can post, but not receive
Hi Richard. I wrote to this person off-line and gave them possible instructions on how to fix the problem and to write to Legacy support if that does not work. Once again, whenever a message is received like this, it indicates the person can post, but not receive any messages in return, so what we have to do is to contact them off-line to give them instructions. What would be helpful if Legacy support would solicit a few volunteers from some of us to contact these persons and then we can take this problem off the list. Jerry and others: When a LUG subscriber can post messages, but not receive, we advise them to check for spam filters. Because LUG messages are a mass mailing of sorts it's not unusual for them to be blocked inadvertently by their Intenter service provider or with a spam filter on their compter. Re: [LegacyUG] subscribe - No, they can post, but not receive
I give them the instructions that will normally correct their problem. It has to do with an embedded space that sometimes occurs in the URL address of the welcoming email that Legacy sends them. If they simply COPY and PASTE the URL to their Internet browser (instead of clicking), it will correct their problem in most cases, I have found. I know from personal experience as well. Legacy support confirmed this to me several months ago, but has stated it has to do with a third-party software application, so they can't fix it permanently themselves. Of course, I always advise them to contact Legacy support directly if the COPY and PASTE does not work. But (Jim), in most cases, I have not found that their messages have been blocked by SPAM filters, but since that is a possibility, I will also suggest they check that just to be sure. Thanks for providing the additional information. This combination of people to eliminate duplication is one of the big, for me anyway, benefits of nFS. Re: [LegacyUG] subscribe
Mostly LDS right now; you can go to the new family search website and fill in a survey that shows you are interested in becoming one of a small number of the general public that is able to use NFS. It's sort of a beta test but not really called that, if that makes any sense at all. They are getting ready to release to the general public but they are doing it slowly to work out bugs etc. The usual process. If you do become one of those NFS users, then you would be able to use the LFS function in Legacy and I suppose that would be very useful to the Legacy programmers to see how everything is working for the general public users. lt is definitely beneficial to the general public; it's just been released slowly to keep the system from being overwhelmed and to work out bugs. This is a huge project that will benefit everyone using it. It's free and you can depend on the data never being commercialized. Hope that helps. There are several non LDS members of the Legacy groups that have recently gotten access through the process described in my previous post. I haven't seen any complaints posted, just that they have received their access permissions. If anyone is interested, they should go to the website and fill out the survey and wait to be contacted. We posted a link on this group a few weeks ago that goes directly to the survey page. If anyone can't find it by going to the NFS website (www.new.familysearch.org) email me privately and I'll look up the old email and forward it. Re: [LegacyUG] subscribe
Marilyn, I don't know what you signed up for but if you were included the the 'test group' as David calls it, they would have given you a way to sign up and get a username/password to access the system. What he's saying (I think) is that it is actually a 'beta test' and the testers are not allowed to discuss it other than through feedback directly to NFS programmers. NFS itself is not a secret; they just don't want the actual functions discussed that have not been released to the general public. This is customary with any beta. If you used FamilySearch before, you know that there were millions of records on individuals that were either extracted from records (birth, death, marriage, church records, etc) or submitted by LDS members in the form of family pedigrees or family group sheets. There were a couple of different collections you could search such as the IGI or the Ancestral File. Maybe those terms sound familiar. It was a great help to a lot of researchers to find research that had already been done on a family line, for instance. It is not a primary resource by any means. You might compare it to trees you would find on Rootsweb or Ancestry.com The NFS has the information in a brand new format with functions built in so that relationships can be managed, duplicates can be combined, additional information and sources can be added, conflicts can be discussed and you can contact others who have submitted information on a shared ancestor. You can upload and download new data all without affecting any of the original records. If a record is combined and shouldn't have, the action can be reversed. You will build your own tree there by connecting relations that are already there and adding the new ones that are not. Your tree may connect into others, extending it all that much further. It's an exciting new concept! Don't confuse NFS with the regular familysearch site which has a lot more to offer, including the wiki and ability to search the FHLs catalog of microfilm, books and other holdings. There is also the Pilot Record Search (may not be called that anymore) and there are millions of searchable records and indexes there with more being added all of the time. Many have the images attached! Everything is free on all FS sites. Some of the record indexes will not give you the images for free because they are held on a subscription site like Ancestry.com but the index is still free. Not bad! Hope that helps!
