Doing this allows me to keep all relevant documents and photos in a way that I can instantly find them. That last line is the longest you will have. I could simply point to the Genealogy folder in Legacy, but I keep a lot of documents that do not necessarily need to be used as source material. They are there to provide additional historical information. Since I was a history major in college, I tend to keep things that others might find insignificant for their purpose. In the Legacy PHOTO structure, I only keep the WEB sized JPG's of my photo's. For the most part, I scan a photo to a TIFF file. This is in the \Genealogy\Photo\ area. I then use Photoshop Elements to add info to the IPTC data. This is just like writing on the back of a picture. I then save this twice. Once as the standard TIFF file, then once with a -EDIT after the name. The first file is never, ever, touched. The second file is used for any editing that is needed and saved as a final TIFF file. Once all that is done, I will save it as JPG. This file is still rather large but will be OK to email to someone else. I will then crop the photo to a head shot or something similar and SAVE for WEB. This allows me to take a 1.2 mb file and reduce it to about 350-450 k. This is what gets stored in the Legacy photo file and, eventually, to the web. For my backups, I use COBIAN to backup both the Genealogy Directory and the Legacy directory, Each goes to a different external hard drive. Once a week, I take an image copy of those hard drives. Of course, I do a standard backup of my database every time I shut down Legacy. Other people have vastly different ways of doing things. Re: [LegacyUG] where to store images
It could be used in the way you describe but the tool was conceived as a one time thing to get scattered media into the one folder. When you link a file from outside your default media folder Legacy can be set to give you the option of copying the file to your default folder so you will have copies of new files added to your media folder as they are linked. The setting for this prompt is on Options Customize Other Settings Message boxes. Click the optional reminder buttons then select the questions tab. Re: [LegacyUG] where to store images
Kathy, With Legacy8, it is easier to copy your images to the Legacy folder for Media, and then when you backup your Legacy data you will also backup the images linked to records in Legacy. I would not put images in the Legacy folder that are not linked to a record in Legacy. If you send a backup (.zip files) copy of your data to a friend or relative, send the zipped Legacy and Legacy Media files, and they can restore the data and have an exact copy of your data and media. You will not need to send copies of images separately. Everyone, have you watched where Legacy is copying images from when doing a Legacy backup? Thanks, Jay, that answers that question, I will focus on getting this project done soon. I didn't realize that doing it that way would allow my images to be backed up and actually available for sharing. Of course, that is a 'no brainer' for me now that I have this bit of knowledge. Now, could I copy my files in the same way they are in dropbox? Like in one mass copy/paste? I guess the bottom line question would be, can you create folders within the Legacy Media files folder? Re: [LegacyUG] where to store images
Brian: You say that the 'Gather Media' copies the files them but does not move them. If I have my pictures in C: drive under Family Genealogy in a file 'Fabyan Pictures,' will those stay there? And, if they do and I add pictures to that file, should I run the Tools Gather Media monthly (i.e., when I save my files) or whenever to make sure that all of the pictures are in both files? That tool will be perfect for you to find media wherever it is stored and copy it to the media folder. Go To Tools Gather Media to start the process. It can also create a list of the media it copied. Note that it copies the files it does not move them so the originals will remain where they were.
