Dear Jean,
As you have marked this as unconfirmed does this mean that you tried
reinstalling LO with any of the newer releases. If you could possibly record a
screencast of your experience, that may help us nail down what is going wrong.

While trying my hardest to reproduce the issue, i did notice one that when i
tried to delete the file windows wouldnt let me saying that i needed
administrator access and then after that it still didnt let me, as if some
other user was still accessing the file, even though libreoffice was closed.

Maxim --

Thanks for a lucid and comprehensive reply. From my perspective, you seem to
have nailed the culprit issue. I am pleased that the info I provided assisted
in isolating the issue. Am open to considering a re-install of LO when 4.1.4
is officially released.

Julien --

All saves were to local E: hard drive, my default data HD.
File system is uncompressed NTFS.
OS is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, 64-Bit, CPU Intel i3, 3.30 GHz, w 8 GB
RAM.
Java (32-Bit) Update 45(build 1.7.0_45-b18).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads-up that ODT = ZIP.

The only germane comment I can make at this time is to say that an uninstall of
LO, and subsequent install of AOO, resulted in the identical file functioning
perfectly in all environments, without glitch or incident.

I did fail to mention earlier, that when LO was installed, I created several
simple text .odt docs that functioned perfectly in all environments as
expected.

I can only suggest, that by some serendipitous coincidence, my first serious
.odt, the suspect file, must contain some unique combination of code causing
the bork.

Thanks for your counsel Maxim, but absolutely clueless about what you mean
by run LO installation and what the procedure is for uninstall Shell
extensions -- where, how, in LibreOffice, in Windows? ty.
Sorry I was not clear enough. I mean you should run LibreOffice setup (the msi
file that you downloaded), choose 'Modify', and uncheck 'Windows Explorer
extensions'.

The reason for such suggestion is simple: You said that 'ANY attempt to RENAME
the copy results in causing Windows Explorer itself to crash!'. LibreOffice can
cause Explorer to crash *only* if Explorer loads some LibreOffice modules. So
the *only* candidates are Explorer extensions. You also said that 'Uninstaller
repeatedly flagged Windows Search Filter Host as preventing uninstall' which
proves it (LibreOffice search filter is a part of 'Windows Explorer
extensions'). Looks like search filter can't finish to index your file, or it's
too slow, thus locking the file. The file can be also locked by thumbnail
generation. Also take a look at Bug 68818 and Bug 71216 for a similar bugs, in
both cases it's confirmed to caused by Explorer extensions. (BTW The uninstall
behavior is also already reported in Bug 69043.)

In fact there is a known bug with Explorer extensions which can cause such
problem - Bug 56007, which also affects search filter as pointed out in Bug
56035 comment 40. (Bug 68487 might be also related.) A fix for that bug will be
included in LibreOffice 4.1.4.

(In reply to comment #11)
I installed 4.1.3 on Win7 and removed LO profile so a brand new one is
 created.
 I did this then:
 - downloaded the zip file
 - uncompress it (BTW, an odt file is in fact a zip file, just change the
 extension for the try)
 - save as and add a test as suffix
 = file saved ok.
@Julien: Please try with an opened Explorer window, and 'Show Thumbnails'
turned on.

I forgot to ask several things (even if you won't reinstall LO)
- did you try to save on local disk or on a network drive, dropbox or something
not local?
- Also which filesystem (FAT32, NTFS), is it a compressed drive?
- Windows 7 32 or 64?
- what's your Java versions? (LO can only work with Java 32 bits)

ANY attempt to RENAME the copy results
in causing Windows Explorer itself to crash!
Sounds like a bug in Shell extension. Could you please run LO installation,
uninstall Shell extensions, and report if it solves the problem?

- uninstall your current version of Libreoffice
- run a Windows registry cleaner (Ccleaner is a free one)
- install Libreoffice, prerelease version 4.1.3 (see

Julien.

Thank you for the counsel.

Followed Maxim's counsel.
Installed 4.1.2.3 once again.
Removed all extension packets showing in File Extensions Manager
Bug behavior unchanged.
Only now, any attempt to open the culprit doc results in a crash of LibreOffice
Corrupted culprit doc now permanently inaccessible.

In frustration, completely uninstalled LibreOffice from my computer.
Uninstaller repeatedly flagged Windows Search Filter Host as preventing
uninstall.
Killed the Filter Host process with Process Explorer.
Uninstaller then flagged PID 2444 which is the Intel Pro Set Monitor, aka, IPRO
Set Monitor.exe
At this point I said, no way Jose am I monkeying with killing that process
which should have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with an uninstall.
Chose IGNORE, and the uninstaller went on to successfully uninstall
LibreOffice.

Downloaded and installed Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1
Culprit doc opened perfectly without incident.
Save As . . . function to create a backup file worked perfectly.
No presence whatsoever of any bugs or glitches.

So bottom-line Julien, not going to attempt following your advice.
But truly appreciates your response.
Just going to stay clear of the stress factor, and run with Apache OpenOffice
for now.

Thank you all.

Unless someone can clearly identify the LO issue, we can just close this bug
report.

(just put 4.1.2.3 since there's what's quoted in initial description)

Jean: sorry, I should have read better first time, no need to clean the LO
profile or to clean Windows registry, since it's a brand new machine.

Anyway, I made some tests.
On pc Debian x86-64 with master sources updated today, I don't reproduce this.
With 4.1 sources (still with pc Debian x86-64) updated some days ago, I don't
reproduce this.

On Win 7, with LO French UI 4.0.5.2, no crash too.
I'll try to upgrade the Windows laptop to 4.1.2 to give it a try

I put it back to UNCONFIRMED

Thank you again for all your troubleshooting support.
A curious scenario indeed.

Not certain of the benefit of proceeding further on this,
especially since the phenom apparently cannot be reproduced.

I have uninstalled LibreOffice, and installed Apache OpenOffice 4.0.1.
The untouched culprit doc, perm corrupted in LO, opened, saved, save as,
copy-paste-rename flawlessly in AOO, without incident or glitch of any kind.

Will just sit tight with AOO for now.

Thanks all for their support.
