FUBAR 2 - aliens (or suspend-to-disk) trashed my data
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 13:13:31 +0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FUBAR 2 - aliens (or suspend-to-disk) trashed my data For the first time since HDD replacement, my L110 battery ran low enough to invoke an automatic suspend-to-disk (which appeared to complete normally). When I re-booted on mains power, Win'98 immediately reported HDD problems and ran ScanDisk. Once this was completed, a stack of my data had been trashed. The HDD is fairly full but defragged regularly; the lost data was all recent stuff. ScanDisk was run in 'thorough' mode prior to the last defrag and reported no errors. I've sorted out the resulting mess and have made sure to avoid any further suspend-to-disk attempts - no problems since. I used suspend-to-disk a lot on this machine before the HDD was replaced - no problems then, either. My questions are: - 1 - Is this possibly/probably a result of TeleDynamics (who replaced the HDD under warranty) not setting up the new HDD correctly? - 2 - How can I check that the HDD/suspend-to-disk 'space' is - or is not - set up correctly? FWIW the "properties" for C: reports 4,318,003,200 bytes / 4.02GB - 3 - How can I "switch off" all possibilities of suspend-to-disk? 1kTIA... FUBAR 2 - L110 replacement HDD slower?
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 13:13:55 +0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FUBAR 2 - L110 replacement HDD slower? Had my L110 HDD replaced under warranty and the new drive seems markedly slower than the old one. I'm basing this on several months use of the original drive, a few weeks on the new drive, and previous experience of Win'95/98 on other (slower) machines. In particular, when using Windows Explorer with display set to thumbnails, it can be painful just switching directories. Other times, C: is displayed twice for a second or so, or the directory tree visibly refreshes - slowly, several times - the HDD light indicating (lots of) HDD activity. This isn't how it used to be in the days before I had a suntan - is it? The drive is fairly full (but so was the old one); ScanDisk then DeFrag are run regularly. From comments made by TeleDynamics when they performed the swap, I know the old drive and the new drive (both Toshiba) were not identical - any suggestions? Is it possible I've been palmed off with a "lemon" - or the wrong drive, even? Could it be a configuration problem? 1kTIA... FUBAR 2 - L110 pinstriped display problem
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 13:15:27 +0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FUBAR 2 - L110 pinstriped display problem Switched on my Libretto yesterday morning and, as if all my other troubles were not enough, the grey colours on the 'Start' menu and in Windows Explorer had a slight, feint, vertical pinstripe effect. As soon as I opened an image, it was obviously less clear than previously. To cut a long story short, I played with the desktop settings to look at examples of different colours, and the 'solid' colours (eg black, white, yellow, 'bright' green, 'bright' red, 'light' blue) displayed solid but the others (eg grey, 'dark' red, 'dull' blue) all very clearly displayed this feint vertical pinstripe effect. Switched on again later in the day (having changed nothing) only to find the same problem but far worse - vertical stripes now very clear, looked like 50% of the screen was not displaying, text now virtually illegible - looking very terminal. Said fond farewells, last rites, etc; switched off (running on batteries, no mains available, not a lot else I could do). Switched on again today with all fingers and toes crossed and - you've guessed it - no problem now... (!?!*%@#!!!) - went back to desktop settings (again, having changed nothing) and looked at the colours again - everything now solid - and I've not been able to determine what happens with the display on an external monitor, when the problem is occurring. Nothing installed/altered recently. FUBAR 2 - L110 20Gb HDD / Win'2k question
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 13:15:54 +0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FUBAR 2 - L110 20Gb HDD / Win'2k question Having re-assessed my opinion of TeleDynamics in general, and in particular their "warnings" of Libretto/HDD6.4Gb incompatibility, I'm again considering a 20Gb HDD for my L110. Here in Thailand the following brands are available in 20Gb/9mm:- - Fujitsu - Hitachi - IBM - Toshiba Prices are similar, Fujitsu the most expensive; I'm being told the Hitachi is actually made by IBM. My first three questions are:- - 1 - Is anyone aware of any problems with any of the above? - 2 - Is anyone on the list already running one of these drives in an L110 with Win'2k? - 3 - Does anyone know if the IBM badged Hitachi differs from the IBM badged IBM apart from the label? I've found a retailer who will copy data (ie CDs - I'm thinking Win'2K) to a drive for me if I purchase one; can I set up the new drive and install Win'2K entirely from there? I do *NOT* have a bootable CD drive (or access to the inside of a desktop or other resources beyond a Swiss army penknife) and can only access a CD drive via the local internet cafe (I *DO* have an Xircom ethernet/modem card!). My fourth question is:- - 4 - I have a free choice of operating systems - is Win'2k my best bet? I appreciate this is a very "open" question but I'm asking in the context of a 20Gb HDD in an L110 and looking for the best, most predictable, most reliable - and, ideally, simplest - solution to the various (BIOS/suspend-to-disk setup/whatever other) issues this combination raises. 1kTIA... FUBAR 2 - 2Gb Toshiba PCMCIA/PCcard HDD question
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 13:16:02 +0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: FUBAR 2 - 2Gb Toshiba PCMCIA/PCcard HDD question Not specifically a Libretto question, but I'm considering* one of these as a means of backing up my Libretto data** while backpacking around south-east Asia. I'm thinking I'd set up a 2Gb (D:) partition for my data, and make straight copies from there to the removable drive. I know they are pretty new... has anyone reading this any experience with such a device (or heard any relevant feedback)? For some reason I'm feeling the need to ask such questions before leaping into another purchase involving a Toshiba label... Anybody seen any availability/street price info? Or similar product from other manufacturers? I've heard the Microdrive has proved less than reliable with the digital camera crowd... 1kTIA... 50 CT Batteries external hard disc drive.
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 22:36:05 - From: "Michael Heathcote" [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: 50 CT Batteries external hard disc drive. Dear list members, My standard 50ct battery is a PA2497UR with the extended battery a PA2498UR. I have noticed that various suppliers list the standard 70ct battery as a PA2452UR. Will this fit a 50ct ? Until I noticed the different part number for the 70ct battery I was under the impression that batteries for the 50/60/70 where all the same ! I have an external hard drive case for my old 810 mb hard drive. This works very well and is a "Standard IDE/ESDI hard Disk Controller". Pure 'plug and play' with no extra drivers required. Is it possible to access this drive if I boot the libretto from the floppy drive with a start up disc, then swop the floppy for the external drive ? I guess what I am asking is where can I find the necessary DOS drivers for a "Standard IDE/ESDI hard Disk Controller". The reason I wish to try this, is to carry out a clean install of 98SE, with the 98SE CD copied onto the external drive. I do not have access to an external CD drive, only by direct cable connection to my work laptop CD drive.
