Way cool David! I wonder if I ought to cash in my CoolPix 990 while it still has any semblence of value, and go out and get something like the Fuji 2800z that has an OPTICAL 6x zoom. One big reason I liked the Nikon idea was for the extra screw-on telephoto and wide angle lenses. But if you're shooting out of doors, the LCD is useless... and the viewfinder isn't looking through the lens like an 35MM SLR. When all the facts be told in brief... this is why I created an online email account years back and went from Shel To Matt. The former to avoid SPAM coming into my ISP email address. The latter for the sheer fun of it I guess! But it seems that online businesses get your ISP email address anyway every time you fill one of their website's forms, and post it off to them. Am I correct in suspecting that those forms are posted to them via my ISP email address? I haven't found that email address configured into MSIE or Netscape anywhere, but I had no other way of explaining why when I posted forms from my old website from my own PC, the form was sent back to me with my ISP email address as the email address of the sender. As for the web engines, it's only because I have a robots.txt file excluding them. I have another archive with nearly 70,000 messages and it didn't take long for google and the like to find it on their own. Now all the big boys stop by occasionally and churn through the whole thing. Of course the address harvestors won't pay attention to robots.txt so the potential abuse is there. I have done some work on this. If you look at a message in the archives, you'll see that the domain part of the senders address is d out. Unfortuneately, this is only part of the problem. The maillist software for some reason always duplicates some of the headers and puts them in the body of the message. And quoted text will often have email addresses in them as well. Still kinda slow even over a fast T3 connection at work, so modem users are probably hurting with all those unoptimzed images and scripting. Because there isn't much there at all besides a pretty picture, can't say if it's worth going on or not yet, right? After all, you will only know after you've got more stuff up. As for potential interest, there's about 800 or so members in this Libretto Mailing List, and many more throughout the world that own Librettos. eg. Just one look at ebay.com shows a healthy amount of traffic for this non-mainstream laptop. Also, thousands of Japanese owners happily chatting away on their Japanese groups everyday (just too bad there isn't an automatic bi-directional translator and repost service). My site still gets a good amount of visitors every day, so there is interest in all of the models, esp. since Toshiba does have the latest L1-L3 models out in Japan. So, long-term, you'll have to decide what sort of focus and coverage you'll want and if you're willing to spend month after month (year after year for us diehards ;), chatting and writing about the Librettos. While there's a lot of duplication of certain information like specs and so forth across all Libretto-related websites, each does have its own unique focus and attributes that make them enjoyable to visit. In any case, you've got to be serious about it or its just a waste of time if you're gonna drop it in a few months. d =) Everyone else can go visit my new Digital Camera website: Photogenic! http://www.silverace.com/photogenic/ Tips, tricks, reviews and more for the digital camera user! -- BTW, if anyone's wondering why the Photogenic site looks so pretty and the Libretto website is to plain-text, here's why: 1) Libretto website is kept all-in-one-page as much as possible and 640 pixel width for easy downloading to the HD or printing for off-line review, and for easy viewing on the 640 pixel width screens of many Librettos. There's only three main pages to download, MAIN, OVERCLOCKING, & FAQ, so monthly visitors who want to save to HD or Print out and run can do so quickly w/o worrying about did I miss something. Other parts are optional, like the pictures of various Libretto keyboards as well as the exploded parts diagram (only needed for ordering parts or taking apart the Libretto). Besides, it's already big enough with all those links to other sites, and graphics would make it load far too slowly. 2) The photogenic website is for the higher-bandwidth, eye-candy users out there who are willing to wait a bit longer to view nice looking graphics (it's a photography website after all!) Because each issue is introducing something new, and hopefully, readers will have remembered the important lessons of prior issues, no point in making it easy to download -- once you've learned something, you don't need to go back months later sorta philosophy. And because it's a making better pictures website, the site itself need to look pretty and all. Designed for modern 800x600 desktop/laptop users since very, very few users in general use 640x480 today - targeting the bigger non-Libretto-only crowd. = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? A lot of the time people will click on the hyperlink in your first post with the URL, check out the site, but then delete the message, and thus loose the URL Also, from my experiences at creating and maintaining a site that centered on specific musical form, and maybe you know this, I found that you really have to do it for the love of it more than anything else. Many people will appreciate the work, but you'll find that you'll get relatively little feedback on it all. Don't expect people to be bowled over with any site until it actually provides content and services that are indispensable. If you list your site on all of the major web engines, and post the URL to everywhere you find an appropriate spot on the net, eventually youll build up your own audience. Youve got to have a passion for the work though, and just enjoy the work for doing it, and for the info it gets out to people. The rewards for the thousands of people that start up websites are few, at least until the ball starts to roll. I maintained my site for 2.5 years intensively, but came to the conclusion that the subject matter was just too obscure, and my work too incomplete, and the effort to keep up just didnt make all the effort worth it. I maintain the files for the occasional person who stumbles on something of worth to them via a web search. An occasionally someone posts a nice note from the site. Again, I think a few good pages on various OS installation procedures for Librettos, and written up procedures for installing a >8GB HDD could be really useful to people. Though I havent checked Davids adorable website recently to see if hes covered these yet. It may be a good idea just to start asking people on this list what theyre like to see on a new Libretto website. Good luck! Matt, I made a few changes, and rebuilt the archive. I did a quick check and this seems to be fixed now. I had noticed them in the past, but it was only an occasional message, so I didn't take the time. It has been increasing though, so time well spent. > >But Mike... I wonder why when you're doing a regular search for some term, > >frequently the results don't return hits for 2002, or frequently only a few > >and not all.< The problem with the "All years" is that due to a hardware failure, I switched to a backup server. The backup doesn't have quite enough ram to reindex the entire archive, so the All years index is not up to date. I should probably remove that choice for now. I will soon be switching back to the main server, which can update all the indexes daily. Right now, only the yearly indexes are updated, and those not every day. Another reason you might not get any hits is if your search term is too common. If a word appears in too many messages, e.g. any word that appears in the footer, it is not included in the index, and will be ignored in your query. What would they be like supplying to the UK ... anyone else over here getting one? pps I've 'nearly' got the Hi-Cap battery I won on eBay on it's way to me after a guy from NASA asked his mate from the JPL to explain to me the difference between Lithium and Lithium-Ion technology. The company supplying the battery still won't ship internationally using the USPS but a mate in Cal asked at the local PO and they said it would be fine? According to the USPS 'small print' it's easier to ship Anthrax, explosives and firearms than a Libretto battery? I, in fact got 2, and the adapter was only packed in one! Since some are reporting they got, some not, I imagine Toshiba got smart and started yanking out the supplies from the box. Bottom line is, the charger requires the same supply as the, uh, let's see... I think the L50 series. If you get the charger, unplug the supply from your computer and plug the charger into the computer. You can then run and charge simultaneously, which is one big benefit of getting the charger. Date: Tue, 02 Apr 2002 19:29:15 + From: "Matthew Hanson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: [LIB] List archive search problem Another thing I've noticed in the searchable archives is that some posts do not include EOL characters. Thus you have to scroll back and forth to read incredibly long sentences that are all on single lines. Again, Raymond's posts show examples of this. Maike, I notice you're server script just takes each message and formats the pertinent section with tags. If there were no EOL characters for sentences in the original post, non get added. It would be nice to have it run off the PCMCIA, but no great loss to me. I really only use the CDROM to install programs, which I would do at home anyway. Most of the other drives with PCMCIA only do indeed run off the card for power. The backpack was the first portable CDROM I bought, and got it for my L100CT when I first purchased it last year. More concerned about having parallel connections for OSinstall and the like, since I had heard that was the easiest way to do it. Works fine for me anyway. I was of the impression that most other PCMCIA CD-ROM drives didn't need external power either. I do know the 24x PCMCIA drives we had at work to use with Porteges don't load the batteries on their laptops much either.
