[LIB] Off topic - Sony Clie PEG-NX70V

Subject: Off topic - Sony Clie PEG-NX70V

Hi all!

I realize this isn't *really* libretto related but I figured some people
here might know the answer ...

I'm considering getting a Sony Clie PEG-NX70V PDA (has internal 640x480
digital camera, takes videos with sound, has support for CompactFlash type
2, 200MHz processor, PalmOS5, MP3 player, verry nice!) to complement my
Libretto (hey I'm trying to make a Libretto connection here ...) but being
in Oz, I know it'll be about 3 months before they come out here (they
started/will start appearing in stores in the US and Japan on the 19th of
October ...) and when it does it'll come out at twice the price of that in
the US or Japan.

I'm wondering if any of you have had good experiences with stores that will
ship to Australia, will stock things like these in English versions and
will not charge like a wounded bull? I notice that the obvious 2 that have
been mentioned on the list - Dynamism and Conics - don't have PDAs listed
on their websites (can you get them in, Brett?) ...

But then again, seems nobody searches the Internet on the obvious, nor
knows about Digikey, one of the largest electronics parts distributors in
the world.

We consider you the Google of the list David. You come up with so much good
stuff!

So here goes - all the technical purchasing information on the power
connector you'd ever want to build/repair your own power supply.

Thanks David. Have filed the info in C:\My 100's

to easily combine my 70s 'my docs' folder, and another older backup. Um...

RE: [LIB] Matt's new toy ;-)

2002-10-19 Thread Matthew Hanson
Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 05:24:55 +
From: Matthew Hanson [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: RE: [LIB] Matt's new toy ;-)

From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The lid is my only real concern. So I'm going to take Nick's advise
and open it up and have a look at the hinge. I don't know how well I
described how much lid movement I have before I experience resistance.
But measuring it, I find I get a total of 3/4 inch of loose travel before
I experience the

No play at all here on my L110. Resistance felt through the entire 180
degree range.

I spent the night of taking the 100CT close to completely apart, checking it
over, and putting it all back together. The left hinge assembly looks okay.
It looks like the metal strap screwed to the lid has a piece of cylindrical
plastic riveted to a flange that acts as the hinge. I suspect that plasic
piece is what broke on Nick's Lib.

It turns out the source of the extra play in the lid is a result of 1 of 3
cracks on the side edge of the top half of the case. It's right under the
space in between the screen and the left hinge/mic post. When I watch the
post when I move the lid backwards, the post flexes outward from the lid.
When I pull the screen forward, it leans inward toward the screen.

The whole top half of the case fell apart into 2 pieces when I pulled it
off. The other 2 splits are right beside the Ctrl and End keys.
Essentially the 1/3 of the case above the battery separates from the back
2/3. But it all screws back together relatively securely, albeit after a
bit of extra puzzling.

** Anyone have a 100CT case sitting around?!! **

Does anyone know if there's a fix for the stiff buttons?

An external mouse. I've used my L110 for quite a bit and it's still the
same stiff feel.

Heh... I've been using an external mouse on the 50 and 70 for a few years!
Accupont is a lot cooler than the standard notebook mouse. But at home, why
bother?

Funny... My brother's girlfriend visiting from Sweden said that ALL
notebooks that she's seen over there have accupoint mice! She'd never seen
a touchpad or that mouse-in-the-keyboard type of mouse.

Charger cords:

http://www.hirose.co.jp/ makes the L100/L110 power connectors.
HRS is stamped on the connector.

    snip

I guess is does make sense to have one of these when you travel with two
batteries. That way you only need to bring one AC adaptor. Good to know
parts are available.

Then at some point I'd really like to set up the W2K OS on the 100,
and pray for less crashing.

been running win98se on my L110 forever and it has rarely ever crashed.

I've found the cause of the W98SE crashes. It's my CF PC card reader. For
some reason I can plug it in, but can't pull it out without the system
freezing. It may be conflicting with the modem that I used to have to pull
out of the 70 to prevent lock up at boot. However I can leave the modem in
the 100 when it boots. I'll have to test the CF reader without the modem
plugged in.

Key is to always to a fresh install of the OS, drivers, apps and
settings, then backup everything to CD-R. That way, system is totally
stable for months, even years to come. Install apps over apps over time and
you'll get a messed up system.

Since you pointed this out a number of months back, I've been doing that.
Plus I have an extra partition on my 20MB HDD, so I leave one fresh
installation alone and intact as my backup. I'll have to backup the ghost
file it I go multi OS.

Then again, computers DO listen to me when I'm around, so they never
badly misbehave...

Heh... I said that about my ability to keep W98 tamed a day before it went
nuts! ;-P

Have you installed the right drivers? When I accidentally click on A drive
with no FDD inserted (or no FDD plugged in for that matter), mine comes
back within about 10 seconds to tell me I've goofed ...

Alternatively, use TweakUI to hide the A drive (then access it when
necessary by going startrun then type a:\ or going into a command line
prompt and typing start a:).

[LIB] Again off topic - Writing a SmartMedia card's CIS ...

2002-10-19 Thread Raymond
Date: Sat, 19 Oct 2002 17:32:04 +0800
From: Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Again off topic - Writing a SmartMedia card's CIS ...

Hi all!

I'm having a bit of an issue with a SmartMedia memory card ... I plugged it
into my Libretto's PCMCIA converter just as it went into suspend and as a
result, corrupted the first meg or so of the card. The problem is the
card's CIS (card identification structure, stores a variety of information
about the memory card) was damaged in the process.

Now I know there are some programs out there that can rewrite the CIS in
their formatting processes but they're reader specific (the one for the Zio
is well documented for instance). Generally these readers have a program
called smprep.exe coming with their drivers which does this for them. It
isn't possible to use standard formatting tools or even disk editing tools
to write this CIS because the drivers for the reader treat such commands as
standard disk commands and hence show the programs what they're expecting -
a disk of some sort - and hide the SM card specific details such as the CIS.

I've heard that it's possible to write the CIS on a memory card when it's
connected using a PCMCIA converter (which are pretty generic anyway) but
I've not been able to find anything further such as that smprep program
(these readers show up as ATA drives so they don't ship with drivers since
Win95OSR2 and above have been able to use them with inbuilt drivers).

Does anyone know anything about this or, even better, know where the
equivalent program to smprep.exe for a PCMCIA/PC card SM reader may be found?

I did some research on the memory question, and found the chipset used in
Libretto 100/110 is the same as in other Toshiba notebooks with more memory.
So I decided to try to replace chips on the upgrade module with higher
capacity ones and see what happens. Then I found out, that high density EDO
chips- needed to have 64 MB on 4 chips, are very hard to find and expensive.
When I learned that my experiment will cost more then $350, and outcome is
very uncertain, I decided to direct my energy elsewhere.
The only component level performance upgrade available for Libretto is
overclocking by changing bus frequency multiplier on CPU. When I had L100, I
tried to overclock it by changing the bus speed itself, but it refused to
work at 75 MHz.

What restricts maximum memory? Why does a 50 or a 70 Max out at 32mb,

It seems that the workaround for this must be far too much trouble and

Libretto audio in and out are 2.5 mm jacks. Most portable electronics and

No Libretto has RCA plugs. They don't even have RCA jacks ( a jack is the
thing you PLUG a PLUG into ). Nor is there such a thing as a mini-RCA jack
or plug.

They all* do have submini-phone 3/32 2.5mm sockets for stereo audio out.

*at least between Libretto 50 and 110 anyway.

Yes, this problem is solved when you install the floppy driver which sets

Hey Raymond... I'm curious about whether or not you figured out the
formatting for that SmartMedia card. Did it need to be formatted for FAT12
or FAT16?

Matt

From: Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you have a PC card SM reader for the Lib, or a USB version for your PC,
and the SM card can be recognized by them, then just right-click the drive
in My Computer, and choose 'Format'. I've done this several times
successfully now.

I'm using an SM to PCMCIA adapter in my libby. I would use my camera to
format them except for some bizzare reason, if the card isn't actually
formatted at FAT12 FIRST the camera rejects it and will refuse to format
it.

*sigh* this is really getting annoying ... I might see if the camera at
work can take SM cards and if so if it will format them regardless ...

Thanks anyway!

I was just realizing this myself... I think three DOS commands could do
most everything I'd like 'move', 'md' and 'rd'. But I'm thinking that
I really do want a GUI.

do you know NC (Norton Commander)

Ages ago on DOS v.5 I used it as I recall. Would it allow for sorting of
files in an order I pre-determine?

Arrrggg... Does anyone have a fix for clicking on the A: drive access
icon with no FDD inserted... and having to wait 4-5 minutes until Windows
decides it can't find any FDD?

Have you installed the right drivers? When I accidentally click on A drive
with no FDD inserted (or no FDD plugged in for that matter), mine comes
back within about 10 seconds to tell me I've goofed ...

I don't know about this 100, but I've always installed the FDD drivers on my
50 and 70, and have always faced the problem. Like when Windows boots,
finds new hardware, starts a process to find drivers, and prompts for places
to look. I've learned to make sure the radio button for the A: drive is not
checked, or I'm in for a 4-5 minute wait.

Alternatively, use TweakUI to hide the A drive (then access it when
necessary by going startrun then type a:\ or going into a command line
prompt and typing start a:).

Interesting workarounds... Imay just do this.

Arrrggg... Does anyone have a fix for clicking on the A: drive
Yes, this problem is solved when you install the floppy driver which sets
up, I beleive, fdcmon.vxd which lets the OS quit searching in vain for the
missing floppy.

Okay... but I don't even see any FDD driver listed for the 100CT on the
Toshiba website:

http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_modItemList.jsp?ProductMenu_0=PortablesProductMenu_1=LibrettoProductMenu_2=1073769616BV_SessionID=;@@@1066793854.1035028021BV_EngineID=ccchadcgiddmlmlcgfkceghdgngdgll.0moid=1073769616smoid=truect=DLListType=Modelx=31y=8

For the L50, that file was part of the accessories zipped archive
l50utils.exe on the Tosh website. Can we use that one somehow.?

I downloaded the Toshiba Windows 95 Accessories for Libretto 100CT file
100acsy.exe from that page. But there's no FDD drivers I can see in it,
unless it's in one of the data files.

Another thing. I was looking at the sound drivers for to L100 on the Tosh
site, and the only ones are for Win95. But the driver page for the L50
shows a Win98 sound driver package fot the 100CT!! So I wonder if the 1-2
minute wait I had for MusicMatch to load to play a portion of a MP3 I was
downloading might be because the Win95 sound drivers might have been
installed on this L100.

I wonder what other L100 W98 drivers are lurking in the wrong places on the
Tosh site.

Thanks,

Matt

I found that L100 FDD driver on a site in the UK. Thanks ever so much

and get them tweaked.

I have taken on the task of taking a friend's Palmax 1100 battery apart to
replace the cells.but I can't find any place online that has any of
these Li-ion cells for sale.

There was a minor discussion awhile back about replacing Li-Ion batteries
and I slept through itcan anyone lead me in a good
direction?.I'm looking for 18mm by 65mm cylinder cells.

Thanks,

Tony

Turns out FAT12 goes to 64 meg ... but further research indicated that it
wasn't the file system that was causing the camera to reject the card, it
was the corrupt CIS ...

This sorta thing tended to happen a lot with the older Diamond Rio MP3
players because when they reformatted cards they wrote their own CIS's onto
the cards and caused digital cameras to reject them. There is a well
documented hack to get around it on the Rio as well as on the Zio
cardreader/writer but none of them seem to want to work on the PCMCIA
adapter I've got :-/
