I know it's cheating but I've had no problems plugging the L50/70 power
supply (actually it's the same as several other Toshiba 15 volt plugs such
as the Portege) into a chassis mount 2.5mm DC power socket (the Libretto
plug seems to be a standard 3.1mm (inner diameter) DC plug you can get from
your average electronics enthusiast store such as
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP0513CATID=35keywords=SPECIAL=form=CATProdCodeOnly=Keyword1=Keyword2=pageNumber=priceMin=priceMax=SUBCATID=651,

or at least I've been using a standard 3.1mm plug first with my L50 and now
with my Portege 7220CTe when I was tapping the power line for running other
things and it's had no problems ... funny how they sell the plug but not
the socket).

The type I'm talking about is the open frame type as in
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0518CATID=35keywords=SPECIAL=form=CATProdCodeOnly=Keyword1=Keyword2=pageNumber=priceMin=priceMax=SUBCATID=651

... you might need to squeeze the 'spring' contact a little with a pair of
pliers first and after you use it with a 3.1mm plug it probably won't hold
a 2.5mm plug very well but it works a treat! Pitty it isn't line though
(and can get a little bulky as line)

P.S. As for tapping into L100/110 supplies (and some of the Porteges like
the 3110), I find a standard 2-pin header (the sort you put jumper caps on
in computers) works nicely if you cut about 1.5mm off the ends (and for
plugging into the computer side, a 2 pin header plug filed down on the
sides and with a little bit of plastic superglued to provide a polarity key
works real nicely.

P.S.S. All this I'm assuming you're actually looking for the male connector
(the computer side) and not the female connector (the power supply side)?
Especially with concentric or jacketed connectors it can get a little
ambiguous but I find a general rule of thumb that you look for the smallest
pin or hole in a concentric connector, if it's a pin it's male and if it's
a hole it's female.

The *male* connectors are available from www.cpc.co.uk - part number
CN0572566
- 2.5mm centre hole, 6.25mm outer diameter, 9mm length. They have a
matching
inline socket CN0649066 as far as I can see.
Heya Neil!
Are you sure that's not a 5.5mm outer diameter? I don't have calipers to
measure it, but I don't get any search hits on 2.5mm 6.25mm coaxial plug,
though lots for 2.5mm 5.5mm coaxial plug. Seems CPC only wants to list
the measurement for the i.d..

I think these US companies have the female (female/male ... male/female
... androgynous??) connector I'm after, but they are 2.5mm x 5.5mm. These
all look the same:

Guess I was the only one posting last night... by mid afternoon here mu
posts hadn't come back, so I sent a note out to Dan who I guess has fixed
things.

I didn't see anything in your second post on a corrected sizes for these
plugs John. Do you have any other info that may help?

Meanwhile, here's what I just sent Neil privately if anyone can help
determine the size for the 50/70 power connectors, and/or where to find that
'female' inline connector:
---

Hey Neil,
Hmm... the list server seems to be stuck again, as my posts there of last
night haven't come back.

Your dimensions for the 50/70 power plug of 2.5mm centre hole, 6.25mm outer
diameter, 9mm length were a good launch point. But I've run into snags
finding the right beast. Maybe your dimensions may need tweaking, at least
for locating the 'female' connetor I'm after.

I can't find any specifications you list for the plugs found on the CPC
website besides the 2.5mm pin/hole for both connetors. I see nothing for
barrel length and o.d.. And I've not had much luck searching the web, other
than determining that the plugs are sometimes referred to as coaxial
plugs.

Dr Xin lists a couple different dimensions on his page for building an
external battery pack:

http://www.fixup.net/tips/battery/battery.htm
At the top of the page talking about making a jack splitter for the L50, he
says:

The plug size is 6/3 mm and one of the two jacks should match it. The
other jack can be the size to match this plug or the one you'll add to the
external battery.

6/3?? I'm not quite sure what he's talking about here with regards to one
of the two jacks that I assume are the 2 pictured there.

But further down where he talks about the igniter converter, cable and
battery, he refers to a 6.5/2.5 mm jack for what it seems I call the
'female' plug, and 6.3/3.0 mm coaxial power plugs on the Radio Shack cable
that I call the 'male' plug.

So do the dimensions of 6.5mm i.d. for socket 2.5mm inner pin for the
'female' jack sound right? And then 6.3mm od of barrel 3.0mm id for the
coaxial power plug?

If so... and I'm looking for a 6.5mm x 2.5mm 'female' jack, I'm still having
problems finding it. And I came up with nothing seaching the HSC and Radio
Shack websites for the product numbers Xin lists.

I know it's cheating but I've had no problems plugging the L50/70 power
supply (actually it's the same as several other Toshiba 15 volt plugs such
as the Portege) into a chassis mount 2.5mm DC power socket (the Libretto
plug seems to be a standard 3.1mm (inner diameter) DC plug you can get from
your average electronics enthusiast store such as
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PP0513CATID=35keywords=SPECIAL=form=CATProdCodeOnly=Keyword1=Keyword2=pageNumber=priceMin=priceMax=SUBCATID=651,
Okay... that page gives what would seem the correct size for the equivalent
on the Tosh AC adapter: 3.1mm(ID) x 6.3mm(OD) x 10mm shaft length

That may settle the specification question for the connector on one side (AC
adapter cable side). From what I see on Xin's wesbite
(http://www.fixup.net/tips/battery/battery.htm) He's talking about 6.3/3.0
mm coaxial power plugs on a Radio Shack cable.. so 3.1mm is darned close.
;-P

or at least I've been using a standard 3.1mm plug first with my L50 and now
with my Portege 7220CTe when I was tapping the power line for running other
things and it's had no problems ... funny how they sell the plug but not
the socket).
Well, I can follow the Shogyo catalog from (
http://shogyo.com/listtypes.html?tablename=dcpower ) and find this:

http://shogyo.com/displayproduct.html?tablename=dcpoweritemnum=MJ-078N
But like all other sites I've found, it only specifies the 2.5mm pin size.
I'm guessing they're assuming a 5.5mm or 6mm i.d. for the hole. This beacuse
I've come up with specs of 2.5mm x 5.5mm for a lot of similar coaxial
connectors.

I also see this there:
http://shogyo.com/results.html?search_type_no=656tablename=dcpowerfamily=DC+Power+Jacks
It looks good, but not the specs for sizes they list.
The type I'm talking about is the open frame type as in
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0518CATID=35keywords=SPECIAL=form=CATProdCodeOnly=Keyword1=Keyword2=pageNumber=priceMin=priceMax=SUBCATID=651
... you might need to squeeze the 'spring' contact a little with a pair of
pliers first and after you use it with a 3.1mm plug it probably won't hold
a 2.5mm plug very well but it works a treat!
I'm confused. The spring there looks like it'd be able to hit the outside
edge of the 6.3mm o.d. of the standard 50/70 power adapter. It already
has a 2.5mm male shaft in the center. What would bending the spring do?
I'm missing something.

I'm a bit lost there too.
P.S.S. All this I'm assuming you're actually looking for the male connector
(the computer side) and not the female connector (the power supply side)?
Funny trying to apply the terms 'male and 'female' to sets of matching
connectors that have both male and female components. But yes, the computer
side connector is what I'm after it. Ive been calling it 'male', as from
what I see, I stick the plug on the end of the AC power adapter into it,
and not the other way around. But how can you use this reasoning with
something androgynous??? :-D

Especially with concentric or jacketed connectors it can get a little
ambiguous but I find a general rule of thumb that you look for the smallest
pin or hole in a concentric connector, if it's a pin it's male and if it's
a hole it's female.
Ah so... now we're getting into the subject of absolute/dualist logic vs.
relativistic/quantum logic! Where's my I Ching?

adapter cord that will accept the standard 50/70 Toshiba male AC power
adapter plug at one end, and has the screwy 100/110 male power plug at
the
other end.
This so I can power the 100 with my old XTend PowerEtender Airplane
Auto
Adapter.

David was great at finding the Hirose cord with 100/110 male plug on the
Digi Key website as part number: RP34L-5PA-2SC But I'm totally
confounded

I managed to get it working on my 50ct. I'd seriously consider making this
my default OS, cuz it runs faster than windoze, but can only get it to
reconise my Lan Card, doesn't work with my Belkin WIFI card. Any way to
install this so you can boot directly from a partition instead of using a
Floppy to boot the Kernal?

 Hi gang-
I've got Feather Linux set up on my 50ct-awesome distro-give it a shot!
Anyway-how can I set my system time? I didn't see any listings under the
 BIOS setup tochange it. Thanks.
 Sean

Re: [LIB] 50/70 plug dimensions part# needed

The type I'm talking about is the open frame type as in
http://www1.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=PS0518CATID=35keywords=SPECIAL=form=CATProdCodeOnly=Keyword1=Keyword2=pageNumber=priceMin=priceMax=SUBCATID=651
... you might need to squeeze the 'spring' contact a little with a pair of
pliers first and after you use it with a 3.1mm plug it probably won't hold
a 2.5mm plug very well but it works a treat!

I'm confused. The spring there looks like it'd be able to hit the outside
edge of the 6.3mm o.d. of the standard 50/70 power adapter. It
already has a 2.5mm male shaft in the center. What would bending the
spring do?
I'm missing something.

Well the distance between the pin and the spring needs to push out to be
equal to the difference between the outer and inner radii of the barrel
connector ... the 6.5mm barrel is slightly thicker so in its default tstate
it might get a little hard to push in, that's all ... having said that, if
you don't bend it (and just push hard), it'll hold the connector in more
tightly ...

I'm a bit lost there too.

The L100/110 power connector has 2 pins and the connector is keyed by
having a 'bump' on one of the flat sides ... the bit of plastic is just
there to provide that 'bump' (so it won't plug in the wrong way).

P.S.S. All this I'm assuming you're actually looking for the male connector
(the computer side) and not the female connector (the power supply side)?

Funny trying to apply the terms 'male and 'female' to sets of matching
connectors that have both male and female components. But yes, the
computer side connector is what I'm after it. Ive been calling it 'male',
as from what I see, I stick the plug on the end of the AC power
adapter into it, and not the other way around. But how can you use this
reasoning with something androgynous???

It gets even worse with connectors that have holes AND pins on both sides
... SGI monitor ports are a classic, on the computer side there are coaxial
male 'pins' as well as the standard female 'pins' ... in the SAME D-style
connector!

P.S. Is it just me or is the list server running slow? I posted my first
reply to this post 1.5 days before I got it back from the list!
