ip_forwarding turned 0 after ~20 min.
Hi, I have a RH 7.3 with 2 ethernet interfaces (eth0,eth1). I set ip_forwarding to be 1 at /etc/sysctl.conf The problem is that after a short period (20-30 min) , ip_forwarding turned down to 0 again . When I cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forwarding I see 0 , and the traffic stops moving from one interface to the other I have also added a static route to one of the interfaces to reach a subnet that is lt gateway interface. That static route is added via route add -net and not at boot time . When the ip_forwarding is set to 0 , that static route is removed as well. It looks like the ip_forwarding is aged somehow. Any ideas? Thanks, Chava

set xemacs window title
Hi all! At my workplace we use emacs to edit files. These files are usually located under a very long path, and as a result we can't see the filenames in the taskbar - you can only see the first half of the path. You won't believe how much frustrating it is to edit 10 files in separate windows of emacs with each has the exact same name in the taskbar (though it improves your memory and orientation). We would very much like to see only the filename in the taskbar, and if possible, to keep the full path name in the title of the window. I've found nothing useful while googling around... We use xemacs version 21.4.15, under KDE. Any help will be highly appreciated, for it might raise the productivity of Intel employees by 200%! ;) Thanks in advanced, Yoni

Hi, As a long time Linux user, I decided to replace my old faithful Pentium 3 computer to a newer x86_64 bit one. I am long-time Linux user and I plan to buy my next computer trying knoppix on it. Yes, in the shop, together with the technican. Then leave the knoppix CD as a present. You will get sure that the computer is Linux compatible, and also, the shop owner will see very powerful Vote with your wallet slogan in action. -- Arieh
Re: ip_forwarding turned 0 after ~20 min.
I'd be trying to check the list of crons (both in /var/spool/cron, but makes more sense in /etc/cron.*/), maybe it's some security enforcement script. RE: set xemacs window title
Thanks Jason for the quick reply! I checked it now on my local machine it works perfectly! But I use xemacs on a remote machine, and I've already tried this with no success. Running xemacs with -user-init-file and such things doesn't work either. But, running it with the -no-init-file fix up the problem! However, all the other options I need are not available. I tried a brand new config file containing only the line you suggested, but with no success. Can there be a global config file that overrides mine? Any ideas? Re: ip_forwarding turned 0 after ~20 min.
It has been some time since I played with a RH 7.3 box, so I might be speeking out of my ass, but my guess is that the 20 min limit stems from the default dhcp lease time. I guess some of the old RH network scripts do something funky with your configuration files. IIRC, you can disable this via a variable in one of the /etc/sysconfig/networking/* or /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/* files. I can't recall which one. Sorry. Re: Recomendation for a new linux computer
Hi, I am long-time Linux user and I plan to buy my next computer trying knoppix on it Well, Knoppix is a very good test but there's only that much you can check in a 10min Linux session Right, knoppix will transparently fall back to VESA if it sees unsupported video card (ATI, NVidia). Knoppix would also not show you compatibility of special hardware (RAIDs, thumb readers, SD/MMC readers, USB and Firewire adapters, WiFi). But then, if you buy such devices, you must do your homework first. It's wise to check before hardware purchase using one of the following Linux Compatibility lists You are falling back to the same trap, that made Linux so hard to penetrate Desktop market. Even me will not start browsing the sites in search of optimal configuration. Too many peoples, that got in the trap, by keeping it complex, helped to prosper such companies as EmperorLinux.com, that are not afraid to charge x2 for certified linux compatible laptop. -- Arieh

As a side bonus - if you leave it in the store - its sure to excite even MS-Windows Vista fans. Too many peoples, that got in the trap, by keeping it complex, helped to prosper such companies as EmperorLinux.com, that are not afraid to charge x2 for certified linux compatible laptop. Nothing wrong with that - if they offer the hardware and the support, and have the market share that allows them to mark up the prices and get away with it, then by all means - go them. I personally would not buy these, but I know a lot of people who prefer Dell/HP computers over standard beige boxes which cost half as much for the same hardware. -- Oded ::.. Re: set xemacs window title
[sorry for top posting, but I follow the thread ] You can add this little snippet to your .emacs: (defun set-title-to-buffer-name () (modify-frame-parameters (selected-frame) (list (cons 'name (buffer-name) (add-hook 'find-file-hook 'set-title-to-buffer-name) This works in FSF emacs, I'm quiet sure it will work in xemacs. What it does: whenever you open (find-file) a new file, it will change the title of the working frame. Ehud. On Wed, 7 Feb 2007 16:18:55 wrote: Thanks Jason for the quick reply!
