Going abroad

2002-02-14 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi Friends,

I will be moving to Germany next week for an unknown period of
time. I won't stay on the list so people wishing to contact me should do
so at [EMAIL PROTECTED] ONLY (all other addresses @huji, @mobileye)
will someday for sure cease to function).

It was nice to meet some of you and I am sorry that I didn't have time to
come to the meetings and other activities.

I'll probably drop by from time to time to ask Hebrew related stuff ...

So long and have fun !

Schlomo Schapiro

PS: Replies should be addressed to me directly as I am already on
"vacation" list-wise.

That's why SuSE include an installation script that pulls these fonts from

Re: Use DualHead VGA cards to have two separate sessions

2002-02-07 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Because a DualHead VGA card can be used only by one X server, not two.
With 2 separate VGA cards that might be possible, but I was thinking of
making use of the modern dualhead cards.

Use DualHead VGA cards to have two separate sessions

2002-02-07 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I am looking for people who tried (or can try) the following setup with a
dualhead VGA card (like Matrox 450/550, Radeon VE and others) or with 2
VGA cards:

I would like to be able to run two completely independant X sessions for 2
users on the same computer. One would use the normal PS/2 keyboard and
mouse while the second user would use a USB mouse and keyboard.

With all my experiments I was only able to use different modes of cloning
or Xinerama or multiscreen for the same session. Also using more than one
keyboard/mouse for one session is possible (with the SendCoreEvents
options).

However, I was not able to define two Layouts (one for each set of
screen/keyboard/mouse) that would give independant displays (:0 and :1 for
example). The X server (XFree86 4.2.0) always just takes the first Layout
section and ignores the others.

Furthermore, on my Matrox G450, if I try to start X on the secondary
display only, it just doesn't work. X complains about a missing definition
for Screen 0 (the secondary display is Screen 1).

So, did anybody make such a setup or wants to do it or is researching the
same or has any ideas ? I would like to know wether it works before buying
a USB keyboard :-)

Schlomo

Re: how to find out wether X user is idle

2002-02-04 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Wel,

I would like to use something existing before inventing the wheel...
And maybe some enhanced "w" or maybe a plugin to "w" (whatever) could do
the job.

What about offering some new ideas instead of just stating the obvious and
unfeasable (I don't have time to dive into large sources now) ?

Btw: Using xautolock to run a program after x minutes idle time is not
enough because I need a per-minute sample wether the user is active or not
to be able to create true usage profiles. And I need to know also (end
especially) about extended periods of inactivity.

Schlomo

how to find out wether X user is idle

2002-02-04 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

is there any way to find out wether a user using X is idle (without using
a screen saver !). I need to be able to find out how much time ago the
mouse or keyboard was used,

Any ideas ?

The aim is to be able to monitor the usage of a Linux Kiosk (X server +
browser + fvwm95) that doesn't run any other programs because I start it
all manually from an init-script (e.g. w doesn't show this etc.).

Thanks,
Schlomo

PS: If I could get w to show correct info, this would be also good.

Re: cross gcc

2002-01-24 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Yes, but it runs a full Linux, (normal kernel, glibc and 8 MB of usual
programs).

It's our online system and rather cool. But now we
don't have a cross compiler and so we have to compile on PPC (we got one
apple for that)

With a cross-gcc we could compile everywhere.

XFree86 4.1.99.6

2002-01-20 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I have to install X on a modern Laptop (Compaq 1700) with an ATI Radeon
Mobility. X 4.1.0 didn't recognize the card so I followed some newsgroup
advice to compile X from CVS.

Compile went well, XFree86 -configure recognizes the card but fails to
load with lots of unresolved symbol messages.

Did anybody on the list manage to compile & run XFree86 from a recent CVS
(preferrably with a Radeon) on glibc 2.2 and can let me download their
(compiled) sourcetree ?

Or does anybody know how to resolve the unresolved symbol messages (on
almost all hardware modules).

Regards,
Schlomo

Actually, about wearables: I once had a "wearable" walkman whose lifespan
was very short (2 days) because I bumped into a corner with it. Nothing
happened to me, but the walkman was broken into 2 ... Since then I
refrain from strapping any costly and brakeable stuff on my body since I
can't exclude the danger of bumping into corners, tables, whatever (Not
that I am clumsy, it just can happen to everybody).

Re: xauth/pam/su inside an xterm problem

Or try this:

#!/bin/bash
if [ "$1" == "" -o "$1" == "fromremote" ] ; then
# same machine
su -c "cd ; xauth add `xauth list $DISPLAY`; xterm -ls -vb -sb -sl
2000 -T Root@`hostname -f` -n Root@`hostname -f` -j -rw +vb -bg \#ff8c6d
-fn 10x20 &"
# sleep to give the xterm time to open
[ "$1" == "fromremote" ] && sleep 1
else
cmd="\"export DISPLAY=$DISPLAY;xauth add `xauth list
$DISPLAY`;xterm -geometry 20x1 +sb -e xsu fromremote\""
rsh $1 "bash -c $cmd"
fi

Works very nice over rlogin, too. It add's the users xauth entry to roots
XAuthority instead of letting root manipulate the users .XAuthority

Have Fun,
Schlomo

PS: I couldn't resist sending it because it's the product of a quite long
improvement curve and I still have some open issues: Like skipping the
cmd= stuff for the rsh. Without it it always would loose the quotes ...

Well, pay upfront $99 to be an "insider". So is this a good money-making
scheme or something real ? Especially since I didn't find anything
technical on the site during a quick browse over the top menus.

Re: Kernel 2.4.17 and stability

2002-01-02 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Interesting. I am running 2.4.4+reiserfs+LVM on a server for more than
half a year without crash (it's a pretty busy PPro 200).

Got a 2.4.9 where xlock crashes all the time. Or stops responding and the
kernel kills it for memory reasons.

So, best stick to the older stuff ...

Re: Free DNS service & Dyn DNS

2002-01-01 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Nono, everybody has their own way to do it :-( bind does support DNS
updates by clients, but it's not so secure AFAIU. Actually win2k tries to
update our DNS all the time with some strange entries.

What I mean is those DNS providers where you can change an entry via a web
interface or perl client to reflect your home's changing address.

Hi,

I can tell you about the Intel ians driver: I set it up to do FEC (which
doesn't yet give me any improved speed). This also does Fail-over very
well. I guess that the intel drivers will also support what you want (ALB
or one of the other modes). In any case you need to use ians.

Re: Preparing a LILO-based boot diskette

2001-12-30 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Best solution:
Install Lilo, boot into linux by default, start X and VMWare with the
original Windows.

They get Windows, you get Linux (e.g. X on another VC), nobody has to
reboot any more and, best of all, you'll get a faster computer after your
father complains that the system got slower (and you answer with the usual
Winblows stuff). If he won't notice it even better (in this case this
action was REALLY justified !).

:-)

Schlomo

PS: IF you have a CPU >1GHz and Windows is used for Internet & Office this
is not so much out-of-the-way (and Linux + VMWare + Resume Windows is much
faster than actually booting Windows :-)

Good point ! Don't run after the latest unless you need it (like if you
have a PPC).

I am also running one of my servers with 2.4.4 with VERY long uptimes
(almost year now). It's got a very large UPS so power failures are less
often ...

However, I once upgraded it from 2.4.2 because I needed the loop device to
work.

Re: Experience with Gamatronic's UPS

2001-12-18 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

we got a lot of them at work and already (after less than 6 month) we also
have a lot of them broken down :-(.
However, their service was OK and they replaced them swiftly.

You should know that the 9pin sub-d interface of the cheaper UPSs only gives
a so-called contact-interface. I have the schematics at home if s.b. cares.
I got them without problem from some tech guy at Gamatronics.

2001-12-13 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I got myself an Intel 100 Server Adapter and I put together this with
another normal Intel 100 and a HP 4000 switch to do load balancing. It
seems to work well and the interface claims to do 200MBit.

The problem is that with all my test I did it seems to me that it doesn't
really pass 200MBit but only 100MBit (I copied /dev/null via netcat two
one, two, three other machines and I never got more than 12MB total).

Does anybody else use such a setup ? I would like to swap experience.

Schlomo

PS: The Server card is just 30$ more expensive and you need just one to
make a team.

Actually more and more FTP clients (not webbrowsers) do support
ftp-over-httpd. Even the famous lftp command line client does it well.

Re: Local SuSE mirror.

2001-12-04 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

please note that International SuSE is not 100% equal to German SuSE.

The differences are in the paper stuff (books etc) and in some commercial
packages they add (for some packages only the International SuSE has the
English version). That's why I advice to always order the International
version. If you order it anyway it shouldn't be a problem, either.

Actually we use 7.1 at work and it's served us very good till now. I
upgraded KDE and X from the SuSE RPMs (d/l) without any problem. I am even
still using the shipped 2.2.18 kernel and no reason to complain (I compile
2.4.x for selected computers that need it).

I would only deal with SuSE Germany. They where very nice till now except
for once when I tried to pay with a credit card of the boss and they
noticed the difference in order-name and billing-name :-) But then a
sales-rep called my from Germany and I tried over 45 minutes to convince
him to take the payment from my credit card (HE called !!!). Then he got
VERY cold feet about the long phone talk and rather suddenly said "I'll
cancel. Please order anew" and hang up :-).

While I was upset that they wouldn't take that order I was very pleased by
them calling me for clarification instead of silently dropping the order.
I am also glad they refused the order since it means that they really
check it.

Re: Local SuSE mirror

2001-12-03 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

PF1/REL imported them last time I checked (by phone). I saw it also once
in a shop in JM (an old version, of course).

And, they actually do have an excellend Evaluation CD (nobody else has
s.th. like this !): It boots a live filesystem from CD with all bells and
whistles installed. Including proper setup and it saves all the data +
your home dir on the local disk (vfat partition needed).

I think this is a very good solution for the evaluation problem and people
who want to suck from this a normal installation can just boot it and copy
it over to their hard disk (and do normal RPM installs afterwards).

Re: Local SuSE mirror

2001-12-03 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

SuSE has a strong position in the German (and European) market for the
following reasons (my personal understanding, nothing official):
- Very good localization (German, French, Spanish)
- Pedantic distro (as opposed to all kind of small "oversights" in RH
setup for non-US configuration)
- really large software selection on the CDs
- till 6.x relatively cheap
- localized phone & email support
- And, last but not least: It's a German distro and Germans of course like
to buy German (just like we buy blue-white etc)

And: There where several other German distros that are now more or less
dead (the most famous beeing DLD).

FYI,

Re: Local SuSE mirror

2001-12-02 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I also tried to talk to them (and I speak German !) to no avail. I told
them that their local importers are doing them a dis-service. But they
told me that they have long-running contracts and that's it.

I don't think that the problem is political, though. I see two major
problems:
1) Israel is very RedHat centric (we are s American !), therefore
there are not so many (almost NIL) people who would buy SuSE
2) SuSE doesn't bother to have importers in many countries. They are just
open for importers to make business with them. I imagine that the
Situation in Cyprus or Poland is not much better than here. It's just our
bad luck that we got an "Israeli" SuSE importer.

Also, note that $130 seems pretty close to the SuSE price if you would
order from them directly (from Germany).

I once ordered a package directly from them for my work and it
was all very well, except the 60 DM shipping cost.

Sincerely,

Schlomo Schapiro

XFree86 4.1.0 & ATI Radeon VE

Hi,

I got one of those new Radeon VE DDR 32MB cards.

X seems to detect it fine, but it has a lot of unresolved symbols in
radeon_drv.o (and of course the screen stays blank).

I searched google, sdb etc. but found only others who complained about the
same thing.

Does anybody know about a solution ?

I actually meant functions like ftell which return the position. If the
function returns a 64bit integer but the programmer uses a 32bit integer
this shouldn't work -- unless the compiler silently upgrades all 32bit

eepro100-diag and mii-diag would be your friend. You can find it on

Re: 2Gig filesize limit problem....

2001-11-19 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

That's what I mean. If you don't use 64bit variables you can't use the
long file stuff because then you would try to use 32bit variables in 64bit
functions.

Or do the flags (__*) also change the internal type of longint ?

Hi,

but don't you also have to use 64bit file position variables ? I always

solution to this problem ?

Re: Two system problems

2001-10-16 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

In SuSE's admin tool YaST you can choose wether the hardware clock is set
to GMT or local time. Maybe you got this wrong ?

Alternatively make sure that your /etc/rc.config contains something like
this:

--
#
# Set to "-u" if your system clock is set to GMT, otherwise "".
#
GMT=""

#
# Timezone (e.g. CET)
# (this will set /usr/lib/zoneinfo/localtime)
#
TIMEZONE="Israel"

Re: ld.so problem in glibc 2.2 compilation

2001-04-01 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I also tried once to upgrade my glibc. In the end I succeeded in compiling
first 2.1.3 and then 2.2.2 on top of it. I used the gcc 2.95 though.

I also never managed to compile and install the libstc++
My problems where also with the locale stuff and the termcap stuff so that
in the end I just gave up and installed some RPMS from a newer distro...

Schlomo

PS: The docs are really between lousy to nonexistant for all the programs
in this area (make, gcc, binutils, glibc ...)

This is REALLY the bad side of Linux.

Re: SuSE ISO mirror / What is Live/Evaluation

2001-03-19 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

in SuSE 6.3 Live means that you boot the computer from CD and get a
working Linux without anything configured. Great as a rescue disc or as a
complete (compilers, man pages, docs ...) Linux on the way.

for SuSE 6.3 there is also an Evaluation CD, this is just a single CD
install, meaning the usual SuSE but with much less packages.

for 7.1 they changed the system. Now the CD boots into the SuSE setup
program (YaST2) after creating a 100MB big file on your harddisk as /home
(This file is created in the existing filesystem, so that nothing gets
destroyed). After that it configures the computer (sound, net,X,input devs
..) and you get a properly configured SuSE Linux which runs from the
CD. Because of the file on the disk the settings and /home are persistant
so that you can reboot the computer and return to the SuSE (if the CD is
in) or just work with whatever was there before.

This also has full compilers and libraries, docs, servers etc. It also
comes with XFree 4.0.2 and KDE 2.0.1 so it's a great tool to check wether
XFree supports a video card or to show off KDE to non-Linuxers or to have
your normal Linux environment available on computers not your own.

Unfortunately the 7.1 Live doesn't allow you to boot into the rescue mode,
which is a pity since 7.1 comes with a recent kernel and reiser etc.

Yes, it DOES solve my "problem", though the fixing had to be done at
Shlomo's (Solomon) place (though pine IS buggy if it let's itself be
disturbed).

Anyway, I am amazed how he could work at all without a valid localtime

SuSE ISO mirror

2001-03-19 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

on ftp://clerk.pi.huji.ac.il you can find SuSE 6.3 and 7.0 FTP version and
the 6.3 and 7.1 live/evaluation CD images.

The 7.1 ISO is not compressed because it contains a compressed disk image.

This is an unofficial semi-mirror for my private usage, but feel free to
use it, too. Please don't spread this URL outside of Israel, though, since
I don't want to put too much strain on the Univeristies resources.

Sincerely

PS: The files offered on clerk.pi.huji.ac.il are not under the
responsibility and not related to HUJI.

Well, I it for sure wasn't MDK8.0 files since I d/l'ed them from

I didn't check wiping my config (~/.kde), I'll try this maybe.

MDK7.2, KDE2.1 & Hebrew (Was: Re: Konqueror and Walla)

2001-03-17 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I d/l'ed and installed the KDE 2.1 MDK RPMs on a fresh MDK7.2 (rpm -U) and
it completely destroyed my MDK installation.

* KDM looked different, probably the 2.1 one didn't use the Mandrake
config files
* Nothing worked inside of KDE, I only got many many error messages about
missing somethings which looked like a mimetype on io* stuff

It seems like the MDK RPMs where not made by MDK and where not adapted to
the distro at all.

So, does anybody know how to upgrade smoothly MDK7.2 to KDE2.1 ? (Without
busting the setups) ?

And, even though I chose Hebrew during all stages of the install (where it
asked for languages), I don't get the Hebrew keyboard in KDE. Any ideas ?

Hi,

you persistently send garbage in your email headers:

Somehow this garbage causes my Pine (4.21_heb2.08) to go into a loop

While this is for sure also a pine bug, this is even more a bug of your

Re: partition Magic to Linux

2001-03-08 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

But why would you ever want to create a bitmap image of your harddisk
? Just make a tar.bz2 archive from it and you wille ven save a lot of
space (namely all the free space on the source disk).

Unlike Windows or NT, there is absolutely no added value to keeping the
harddisk as a bitmap image. In any case you'll have to re-run lilo (or
similars) after restoring and in any case you should keep a rescue linux
handy.

Just MHO

Re: make dep on kernel 2.4.2 gets stuck

2001-03-06 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

No, of course not RH (I never used RH). It's my good old SuSE 6.0
hand-patched to newer versions. Anyway, last night I downgraded the glibc
to 2.1.3 and tried again. make is version 3.79 (the latest).

Now make dep fails after the ext2 seemingly when making dep on fat:
make -C ext2 fastdep
make[4]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/fs/ext2'
/usr/src/linux/scripts/mkdep acl.c balloc.c bitmap.c dir.c file.c fsync.c

make[4]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/fs/ext2'
make -C fat fastdep
make[4]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.2/fs/fat'

make[1]: *** [_sfdep_fs] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.4.2'
make: *** [dep-files] Error 2

My relevant .config entries are like this:
# File systems
#
# CONFIG_QUOTA is not set
CONFIG_AUTOFS_FS=m
CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS=m
CONFIG_REISERFS_FS=y
# CONFIG_REISERFS_CHECK is not set
# CONFIG_ADFS_FS is not set
# CONFIG_AFFS_FS is not set
# CONFIG_HFS_FS is not set
# CONFIG_BFS_FS is not set
CONFIG_FAT_FS=m
CONFIG_MSDOS_FS=m
# CONFIG_UMSDOS_FS is not set
CONFIG_VFAT_FS=m
# CONFIG_EFS_FS is not set
CONFIG_JFFS_FS_VERBOSE=0
CONFIG_CRAMFS=m
CONFIG_RAMFS=m
CONFIG_ISO9660_FS=y
CONFIG_JOLIET=y
CONFIG_MINIX_FS=m

which seems 100% normal for me.

Any ideas ?

Schlomo

PS: The previous problem might be related to my games with glibc versions
etc. I think I solved them now since now make fails with a proper error
message instead of just getting stuck. Btw, my tmp usually has several G
free so I don't expect a problem there anytime soon.

Hi,

I am trying to compile kernel 2.4.2 and make dep gets stuck with this

Re: Xauthority question

2001-02-28 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I start my su like this and it works well:
su -c "cd ; xterm -ls -T Root -n Root -fn 10x20 &"'

I ran into the problem after I started to work with SSH and X forwarding,
a combination which is also quite strict about X access rights.

Re: Squid configuration

2001-02-27 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

while I got many good ideas from linux-il I had a chat with the HUJI-CC
Unix boss. He tells me that they configured their squid so that it won't
talk to other, unspecified, squids and that's why it doesn't work. He also
tells that this is not related to ICP, but that a squid proxy doesn't talk
to a parent proxy via HTTP but rather through some other protocol which he
blocked.

Is this true, does squid really not use HTTP to talk to the parent proxy ?
Or, in other words, can a squid proxy tell wether a request comes from a
web-browser or andother squid ?

Schlomo

PS: Related, does anybody have good experience with Apache as caching
proxy ?

Why, I think the best way to use the commercial distros is to start with
them and slowly replacing stuff with your own. Just do an rpm -e before
you make install and your on your own from a good base.

I don't think since if I set on my squid machine the proxy to said ISPs
proxy and surf it works well. This means there there is no problem to
connect from my machine to the proxy server.

Re: glibc 2.0.7 -> 2.2.1 upgrade stories

2001-02-26 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

No,

while my system is RPM based (SuSE 6.0), I use rpm mostly for rpm -e
before I install a new program. I only compile stuff on that machine.
The FAQ of glib said that it should work (I actually compiled a program on
another machine that has glibc 2.1 and it works on my glibc 2.0
system!) and that the make install will remove the old includes.

The Q was wether there are any other problems, how well does the binary
compatibility work etc.

Yes, no errors reported. I tried to increase debugging, but didn't get
anything more.

It seems for me like if my squid can't talk to the HUJI-CCs squid ??

I am planning to upgrade my glibc as above. According to the FAQ this

Can anybody tell success/horror stories or give tips about this topic

Squid configuration

2001-02-23 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I am having trouble to setup squid to use my ISPs proxy. I seem to set it
up correctly as
cache_peer wwwproxy.huji.ac.il parent 8080 3130 default no-query no-digest
but it just doesn't work. It seems like my squid can't talk to the parent
squid, it just waits a lot and then returns a connection timed out.

Can anybody, who uses squid to connect to their ISPs proxy, send me their
squid.conf ?

Any ideas ?

Well, but the lo network (127.0.0.1) is usually defined with a netmask of

Re: Stupid Bezeq

2001-02-11 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Actually I didn't really get where the problem is. After all the private
network ends at the NAT gateway and about anything outside you just don't
care.

If you connect to places that run a private net via some tunnel over the
public IP net, then again you don't care wether part of this public IP
runs over some fake nets or not since only your two gateways have to (and
can) know about YOUR private nets.

So, where could the private provider net possible be a problem ?

b) maybe fix linux.org.il ?

Thanks a lot,

Re: SuSE Email Server II

2001-01-31 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

while I might agree with you for a home system, if you have to install
a production system for an office you want something that is
- fast and easy to install & setup
- has good support (SuSE give 2 years push updates !)
- has a proper admin interface so that some looser can do simple
management tasks
- especially on unix it is still a major piece of work to make a whole
bunch of programs work together as one (LDAP, cyrus, postfix, IMP,
apache) and $250 for sure is cheaper than MY time :-)

Just some reasons ...

Schlomo

PS: I am considering to buy this but since SuSE don't have a demo, I would
like to hear s.th. about it.

PPS: This is a fairly new product, btw.

SuSE Email Server II

2001-01-31 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I am looking for some infos about above product. Anybody tried it,
installed it, any comments ?

For interested people:
It's a SuSE Linux with postfix, LDAP, cyrus IMAPD, Horde IMP ...
and (best of all) an integrating Web management interface !!! for ca. $250

I am looking into email server solutions that also have a good user
management interface and this is one of the (seemingly) best I found till
now.

Clock stopped

2001-01-17 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I got a Linux computer who's clock stopped !

I do "date" several times (over 5 minutes) and it shows the SAME date.

Can this be ? That the kernel clock stopped ?

I can execute programs etc. though some things seem strange (e.g. on the
shell I get the output only when I press a key, some weird kind of delay.

Anybody seen anything like this before ?

Schlomo

PS: Please also mail to me directly (mutt users: just hit reply all :-)

PPS: It's a PIII-500/256MB RAM/ 2.2.17+ReiserFS kernel

Private SuSE mirror in Israel available

Hi,

I have a private SuSE Linux mirror in Israel (currently holds 6.3, 7.0 and
demo/evaluation CDs) on a fast connection.

Anybody interested in the details please mail me. I won't publish it with
SuSE since I don't want to draw any unneccessary traffic.

Re: Serial Console

2000-12-12 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

I use a DEC VT520 and put in my lilo.conf these lines
append="console=ttyS1,115200n8 "
serial=1,38400n8

works well and I can enter commands at the lilo prompt and see all the
kernel messages.

Maybe you have a problem with the config of your terminal ? That is what
took most time for me.

(I run SuSE, too)

Re: Backup recommendations needed.

2000-12-12 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

legato on Solaris works rock-bottom stable with all OS supported at the
Hebrew University. It's pricey though.

You can also check Arkeia, BackupExec, TapeWare, amanda (it's free !)

If you have the money, get legato for solaris.

Re: default permissions

2000-12-03 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

I actually also need such a feature, but for a different reason:

On the network server I am putting files into all kind of directories, but
in each dir the files should have a different umask/gid, because some dirs
are public and others are not and yet others are for the web server etc.

Just now I put the files and chmod/chown them all the time. If I could set
up a dir to create files with a certain umask/gid then I could work as
user and the permissions and ownerships would come automatically.

Re: How to slow down noisy CDROM

2000-12-02 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

thanks for the ideas, but I really was looking for a way to tell the CD to
read the data slowly :-)

The point is that like this I can just cd into the CD and play the music
without a big hassle, and I know that for Win there is such a program
(called CD-Bremse) and I was just thinking that it might exist for Linux,
too.

How to slow down noisy CDROM

2000-12-01 Thread Schlomo Schapiro

Hi,

does anybody know how to slow down a noisy CD ? I use it mostly to play
MP3s and the vacuum cleaner noise doesn't fit the music (and the CD would
be still fast enough if it would run at 4x instead of 36x).

Thanks,

PS: Under Windows there is a program to do this, but I didn't find
anything for Linux :-(
