[Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-pnp can't reboot/power off
Hi all, my name is Mauro, new entry in the list. I'm trying to build up a classroom with a server and 20 clients (7 fat, 13 thin). My clients are old and very old laptops. With some of them I can't reboot or reach the power-off step. The shutdown starts and all seems ok but then I get a black screen and I have to unplug the power to boot again. I'm using Lubuntu 16.04. Re: [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-pnp: No overlayfs or aufs support detected
Now, I moved the mount-point (from /mnt/home2) to /home2 and add the following line in /etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.excludes: home2/* The good news is that the mount-point is now visible also at the client side. However, the symlinks still do not work because nothing is mounted to /home2 yet. I've tried to get more information about the parameter LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS=/home2 ...and found a link which explains that the extra mount (=/home2) will be mounted (to the client) only if the mountpoint in the chroot (=server) is empty ... which means that the idea of the parameter LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS is to share the same (empty) folder to several clients (e.g. for file exchange ...?) (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FatClients) Since my folder /home2 contains subfolders of all users (containing their Virtualbox stuff) the above mentioned approach will not help. For that reason I will try to implement Helmuts idea, which might take some time. Further comments are welcome ... Re: [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-pnp: No overlayfs or aufs support detected
to Vlaltteri: -- As you can see from the previous post I see the home directory mounted via sshfs. The server has multiple users which I want to distribute to several clients. The login screen on the client shows a prompt for user-name (and later for the password). (I'm not sure if this is what you want to know.) However, I'm able to login for different users. I've tried LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS=/mnt/home2 which sounds really promising. Unfortunately, the additional mount-point is not visible after a reboot of the client (and the server). Do I have to rebuilt the image first? The symlinks within /home/truth are visible also on the client side. However, the symlinks point to a mount-point which does not exist, e.g.: VirtualBox VMs -> /mnt/home2/truth/ Any further suggestions? to Helmut: - As far as I understand LTSP is able to use nbd or nfs - however, running LTSP-PNP on kernel 4.3 seems to allows only nbd (see https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=786925) Nevertheless, even if nfs would be possible I would prefer to not mix to many filesystems. For that reason I would prefer to first follow Vlatteris approach ... This appeared to me as a request, to mount some storage besides the common home from a fileserver. For NFS, you have to install the package nfs-kernel-server (Debian) on the file server and create a file (or add an entry to) /etc/exports: /home2 10.1.1.0/255.255.255.0(rw,async,no_subtree_check) 10.1.1.0/255.255.255.0 might be the subnet for your thin clients, please adapt to your needs. This gives the client the right to mount your /home2 With an appropriate entry (see above) in your thin clients /etc/fstab, this directory is mounted automatically when needed. In the thin client image, you have to install the package nfs-common. can you see any home directory ( most of it) after logging in to the desktop session? session is served default from the boot/ltsp server. you should get the home/user mounted from ltsp server without changing anything. home directory is mounted with sshfs how do you use this ltsp server? is the setup built for multiple users or just one user/you? keep in mind that consideration how your server is used and Check lts.conf manpaged and try: a) LOCAL_APPS_EXTRAMOUNTS=/mnt/home2 or b)just create the symlinks in the home directory and test login from client (check from manpage SSH_FOLLOW_SYMLINKS) or if nfs mount sounds ok c) check NFS_HOME (is it depricated?). maybe search here in ltsp-discuss how FSTAB has been used to do nfs mounts Best regards Valtteri Suojanen 21.1.2016 13.09 "Truth" kirjoitti: > On 21.01.2016 11:16, Truth wrote: > > On 21.01.2016 05:15, Vagrant Cascadian wrote: > >> On 2016-01-20, Truth wrote: > >>> While everything was fine with my test-setup using Debian 8.2 (i386, > >>> linux-3.16) ... > >>> I tried to install the same ltsp-pnp server on Debian 8.2 (using > >>> linux-4.3 from the backports). > >> You'll need the backported LTSP packages from jessie-backports, and may > >> as well get updated LDM packages while you're at it. > >> > >> > >>> I tried to create an image with the command > >>> ltsp-update-image --cleanup / > >>> > >>> and get the following error message: > >>> modprobe: FATAL: Module overlayfs not found. > >>> modprobe: FATAL: Module aufs not found. > >>> No overlayfs or aufs support detected > >>> > >>> (I did not have this problem with linux-3.16.) > >>> > >>> Does someone has an idea what's wrong? > >> The issue is that 4.x kernels in jessie-backports don't have aufs > >> support, and the version of LTSP you are using doesn't have support for > >> the overlay fs included in the 4.x kernels (not to be confused with > >> overlayfs, which was shipped with ubuntu, but behaved somewhat > >> differently). > >> > >> The newer versions of LTSP fix this issue, although required switching > >> to NBD rather than NFS, as overlay fs is incompatible: > >> > >> https://bugs.debian.org/786925 > >> > >> > >> live well, > >> vagrant > > Thanks for your input. > > I've installed ltsp-server-standalone and ltsp-client from the > > backports (ldm was already the latest version). > > Nevertheless, on a first try I've got the same error message. > > > > I've tried several things and finally ltsp was running. > > I'm not quite sure what exactly made the difference but it could be that > > apt-get -t jessie-backports upgrade > > > > ... solved the problem. > > > > Now, when runningltsp-update-image --cleanup / > > I get a nice image and (almost) everything is fine. > > > > However, is there a way to make an image including symlinks? > > Some parts of my home-directory (e.g. some virtualbox stuff) is located > > in a separate partition which is mounted to /mnt/home2 and I use > > symlinks to connect to this mount. > > > > Many thanks in advance. > > Truth > > I've just realized that the home-directory can not be part of the image. > However, I guess that I need to modify a config-file (how?) to solve my > problem ... > > Truth > > > -- > Site24x7 APM Insight: Get Deep Visibility into Application Performance > APM + Mobile APM + RUM: Monitor 3 App instances at just $35/Month > Monitor end-to-end web transactions and take corrective actions now > Troubleshoot faster and improve end-user experience. I've installed ltsp-server-standalone and ltsp-client from the backports (ldm was already the latest version). Nevertheless, on a first try I've got the same error message. I've tried several things and finally ltsp was running. I'm not quite sure what exactly made the difference but it could be that apt-get -t jessie-backports upgrade ... solved the problem. The issue is that 4.x kernels in jessie-backports don't have aufs support, and the version of LTSP you are using doesn't have support for the overlay fs included in the 4.x kernels (not to be confused with overlayfs, which was shipped with ubuntu, but behaved somewhat differently). Re: [Ltsp-discuss] LTSP-PNP and pam_group.so behaviour in thin clients, fat clients and ltsp-localapps
My apologies. Setting SUID bit for /usr/bin/dumpcap works in all cases. Also, getcap fails on the fat client and the thin client console, but works on the application server itself. I'm still curious about setting capabilities on the fat or thin client. From: Robert Mavrinac Sent: July 23, 2015 3:25 PM To: ltsp-discuss@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: [Ltsp-discuss] LTSP-PNP and pam_group.so behaviour in thin clients, fat clients and ltsp-localapps I am currently setting up a new cluster of LTSP-PNP servers running Debian 8. I have the appropriate settings for adding all authenticated users to various groups automatically using pam_group.so, modelled after settings in the debian-edu-config package and documentation at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LDAPClientAuthentication. The group membership is correct for the user logged into a thin client, even at the console (Ctrl-Alt-F1). Take wireshark, for example. It works fine on the thin client because the user is in the wireshark group, but I would like it to work on as an LTSP_LOCALAPP. If it is run as a localapp, it complains about permissions even though the user is in the wireshark group. https://wiki.wireshark.org/CaptureSetup/CapturePrivileges#Other_Linux_based_systems_or_other_installation_methods offers some suggestions: 1. Additional capabilities are suggested to get dumpcap to work, but this doesn't work for ltsp-localapps or fat clients. setcap 'CAP_NET_RAW+eip CAP_NET_ADMIN+eip' /usr/bin/dumpcap On the fat client getcap /usr/bin/dumpcap yields "Failed to get capabilities of file `/usr/bin/dumpcap' (Operation not supported)". 2. [Ltsp-discuss] Ltsp-pnp desktop recommendation for Ubuntu 14.04
Hello, I am attempting to implement an LTSP-pnp setup with Ubuntu 14.04. Looking for suggestions / help with desktop selection. I wanted to use the Unity desktop because it is standard with the distribution. However, turns out the thin client performance makes it not usable. Although the fat client performance is good. I've also encountered some other strange issues like the desktop failing to load except for the background. I fixed that part but I cannot get the system indicators on the top panel to show up. If I ended up sticking with Unity, I would need to figure out how to prevent it from auto configuring the client monitors. Some of the clients need specific xrandr commands set in the lts.conf and Unity desktop is overriding them incorrectly on login. Is it possible to make Unity respect the xrandr commands set in lts.conf? I think I have decided to try a different desktop. I am currently looking at MATE. Is this a good choice with LTSP? Are there any others I should look at or any that would be a better fit taking the problems I mentioned above into consideration? So, you either need to set up routing on your LTSP server, or better, configure DHCP to hand out 10.1.1.1 as the gateway. The dnsmasq man page reads: --dhcp-option=[tag:,[tag:,]]... Specify different or extra options to DHCP clients. By default, dnsmasq sends some standard options to DHCP clients, the netmask and broadcast address are set to the same as the host running dnsmasq, and the DNS server and default route are set to the address of the machine running dnsmasq. So, I think you want in /etc/dnsmasq.d/*.conf: dhcp-option=3,10.1.1.1 (dhcp option 3 is gateway) live well, vagrant pgpceTFPQ7dIk.pgp Description: PGP signature -- _ Ltsp-discuss mailing list. [Ltsp-discuss] LTSP-PNP fat client routing issue
I've setup LTSP-PNP on a Xubuntu 14.04 system and I'm up to the last issue, which is my fat client cannot access the internet. What I mean by that is I cannot ping an external IP address on a fat client. I'm using dnsmasq as my DNS, DHCP & TFTP server on the LTSP machine which has one network cable and is on IP 10.1.1.11. I have a ADSL2+ modem/router on 10.1.1.1 (with it's DHCP disabled) on the network as well. If I boot a machine on the network which is not the LTSP server or fat client, that machine gets it's DHCP info from the LTSP server and can successfully ping an external address and browse the internet. Here are my configuration files /etc/dnsmasq.d/ltsp-server-dnsmasq.conf http://pastie.org/9468560 /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf file: http://pastie.org/9468562 Tests I can do a 'dig debian.org' on both the server & the fat client. I can 'ping debian.org' on the server, but not the fat client. If I do a 'traceroute -n 8.8.8.8' on my ltsp server it works, but on the fat client it does not work. Here are the routing tables LTSP Server routing table Destination Gteway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 10.1.1.10.0.0.0 UG 000 eth0 10.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 000 eth0 LTSP fat client routing table Destination Gteway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default server0.0.0.0 UG 000 eth0 10.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 000 eth0 -- from Michael -- _ Ltsp-discuss mailing list. If your clients cannot run 64bit (or you don't wish them to) be aware that a major difference with LTSP-PNP is that there is no seperate chroot so that clients run a different arch from the server. Many of us running LTSP-PNP run the 32 bit version on our server just so that the clients may also. Richard -- Want fast and easy access to all the code in your enterprise? Re: [Ltsp-discuss] LTSP-PNP What directories get mounted ?
Hello Again :) Just started playing again. I have 3 setups on 3 different disks. All under 12.04 The one that works has a default in pxelinux.cfg that only mentions nbd in any of the lines. The others have entirely different instructions. Both the failing systems allow the client to get as far as initramfs, which says to me nbd-server is not exporting the correct file system . If I run /usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels, the default file does not change. How does one recreate the /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386 directory from scratch ? If I move ltsp to ltsp.org, update-kernels does not recreate anything. Peter Later on this morning. removed /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp and re-ran ltsp-update-image ---cleanup / This time it regenerated the ltsp directory and looks good. Will have to test I have answered my own question.!! Peter On Fri, Jun 14, 2013 at 10:12 AM, wrote: > > I've just started with ltsp-pnp on 12.04 Ubuntu. So I now conclude that my DNS problem arose when -- to solve the LTSP client boot error -- I reverted to /etc/network/interfaces to manage the network interface configuration instead of allowing NetworkManager to do so. Now your earlier words about whether this was a problem that "affects all Ubuntu users that don't use network-manager" make sense to me. I would be happy to allow Network-Manager to configure the network interface if there were a reasonable way of resolving the timing problem (or whatever it is) that it introduces in the boot process which results in the client boot error I experienced. -- Everyone hates slow websites. Re: [Ltsp-discuss] LTSP-PNP on Lubuntu: Chromium ERR_NAME_RESOLUTION_FAILED
You're right! This is some sort of general networking problem. The web browser had worked on the LTSP server after the initial Lubuntu installation, but now it doesn't, generating the same error as on the client. Ping does work. Working back towards the state the LTSP server was in when the browser worked, I removed the nameserver entries in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/base, then the entries in /etc/network/interfaces. (I also tried setting up eth1 as static.) I restarted the router. None of that solved it. So that leaves perhaps the Lubuntu updates (can't remember if I tested the browser before or after those) and the LTSP setup as possible culprits. Could it be that dnsmasq trips over the native/initial provision for DNS in Lubuntu? On 11/10/2012 8:39 PM, Philip Loewen wrote: Is Chromium the only thin-client application making trouble? I cannot move my mouse over xterm window: it accepts no input from my input devices. I know the mouse and keyboard input work because I can CTRL + ALT + F1, or move the mouse over the black screen in xfreerdp if I set it to SCREEN_07. I've also tried setting $HOME as you've suggested for "xfreerdp and Ubuntu 12.04", but with no effect. My ps aux | grep rdp is the same as David's, although he appears to be able to use his SCREEN_07=xterm while I cannot. [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-pnp i386 xfreerdp
I'm experiencing the same issue as Radek and David with xfreerdp and a fresh 12.04 i386 ltsp-pnp https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp It will fully boot to xfreerdp, but then only display a cursor and black screen: no further prompts or screen redraw from xfreerdp David's "ps aux | grep rdp" output is similar to mine (same look, different options). I've tried removing all RDP options (well, except RDP_SERVER of course), with no effect. There is a console available at CTRL + ALT + F1 that works fine for local ThinClient login. Any further assistance is greatly appreciated. I'm quite familiar with LTSP and would be willing to try any suggestions to get this working. Thanks. Hi is there a limit of connections for nbd in ltsp-pnp? I only manage to get 20 clients connectet, every additional client runs into busybox telling me the nbd- filesize is far to big. [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-pnp
Hi ltsp-pnp Team, is there a flag I can set to force clients to be thin? I have plenty of old machines with the ram-collection of other old machines, but I rather use them as thinclients like before, because I have a powerfull ltsp server running idle with ltsp-pnp fatclients. Can I create sets of machines (MAC address or IP-Number) which either get this "--force-thin" flag or not? You can set the following key in your lts.conf to force Ubuntu 2D: LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d" > Last (for now) ist that I plugged as many ram as I could find into > my old machines leading to the fact that all clients have 500+MB. > But some of them are really slow and I have a powerfull > ltsp-server. [Ltsp-discuss] ltsp-pnp at our school
Hello Alkis, hello others, my name is Roland, I am German and I am the computing teacher and system admin at our school in Haan (near Düsseldorf) I used to use ltsp in our ubuntu school system since 2008, but now I found your ltsp-pnp for 12.04 which is absolutely great !!! Thanks a lot for that! I just installed it at our school in this very minute. We have 60 clients and 1000 accounts! Almost everthing works out of the box as you said, but just almost. We have some machines with a motherboard-vga (dell optiplex 740). These pcs die when loading an image to ram. This is a known bug and to prevent them from using their full ram I used to add mem=1G to the default file in pxelinux.cfg. On the other hand there are smaller machines which die if they recieve this mem=1G option. I uses to get around this by using more then one files in pxelinux.conf. I could do the same again, but I want to stick to your conventions an this is to use /etc/ltsp for configurations. Is there a chance to have multiple boot options for different sets of machines somewhere in /etc/ltsp? Second is that I want to use unity as default desktop but it has to be ubuntu 2D. When I select this everytime at the ldm it works fine, but how can I set this to default (which now is ubuntu (without 2D), and that does not work at all on my clients) Last (for now) ist that I plugged as many ram as I could find into my old machines leading to the fact that all clients have 500+MB. But some of them are really slow and I have a powerfull ltsp-server. Can I change the limit up to which the clients behave as thinclients rather than fatclients? Or again can I define sets of machines that work as thinclients even if they have plenty of ram? I am willing to help as much as I can and I will report on any strange things happening or solutions (even workarounds) that I found. I think your simple ltsp-pnp is the key for a lot of schools to switch to linux. In my town there are 3 other schools waiting for ltsp to become easy enough to get used by "non-freaks". I think, ltsp-pnp will save my day on my mission to convince them of open-source!
