No, it works fine if you install the correct packages: - install jfig, a quite good XFig clone done in java. It is free as in beer. The configure script of LyX will find it if it's in the patch. - dowload the transfig package from the WinFig homepage. Winfig is a shareware program that is useful only if you get a license. But the transfig package is open source and you can install it without problem. This is all out of my memory, you'll need to google a bit for getting the proper names and locations. Abdel.

I'd like to be able to edit these things through the main LyX interface, rather than through the preamble window, so I was wondering if there's a way to define a new paragraph style that would put the contents in the preamble, rather than after it. A Style that writes into the preamble is impossible. But there is a workaround: A separate document with just the Preamble Styles that is exported to TeX and included from the main document preamble with \input{thepreamble.tex}. So you can start each of your chapters as a new section, and they will start immediately. You may have two such chapters on the same page, if they are short enough. It'd be interesting to know more about what kind of lilypond support that actually is useful. Currently, LyX can use lilypond files that takes up a page or less. This because LyX runs the file through the lilypond software for you, obtains a pdf or postscript file, and includes that as a graphical object. This lets you typeset pieces of music that is less than a page each, and get them into the LyX document. Maybe it is also possible to create small examples such as a single chord and include it in the middle of a line of text. I haven't actually tried that, but it ought to work. The way to do this: 1. Create a LyX document and a lilypond file 2. In LyX: Insert-File-External Material 3. In the external material dialog, change template to LilyPond, and insert the correct filename. Your music should now appear when you print the LyX file or export a PDF file. Please let me know if there are problems with this. Re: Lilypond integration
I know that you can include Lilypond material by External Material. That's ok when you have few notation examples in your text and I appreciate that someone took the time to implement it. But I'm trying to write a book about jazz harmonics and therefore I need many musical examples that have to be changed often in the writing process. The main problems I have with the External Material approach are the following: 1. It interrupts the creative process, because you need to prepare the lilypond snippets in another editor and import them afterwards 2. You don't have a preview and therefore it is a bit difficult to see whether you have written something already or not 3. If you have to change one of the snippets, you have to find the corresponding file I don't know if it's possible, but the ideal solution (for me) would be some kind of lilypond environment (somewhat like the math environment), where you can type in your lilypond code directly. After leaving this environment, the graphic is rendered and put into place in the LyX document. If you need to change it, you just click on the graphic and the code environment pops up again. This is of course not a simple modification to do, and I guess it wouldn't be that fun either, but I'm sure it would be a valueable addition to LyX's feature list because as far as I know there is no solution today that combines text with music typesetting in a convenient and straightforward way. I would even volunteer for implementing parts of it if needed. Johannes Asal 2009/3/10 Helge Hafting helge.haft...@hist.no j.asal wrote: Hi, I want to write a music theory book with LyX. In Latex I can say: \define \name{body} but how shall I do the same thing in LyX? I've had no success with the TeX code boxes. It depends. There's been talk of adding general macros to LyX, but I'm not sure if it's been implemented yet. If that's what you want, you can put the LaTeX definition in the preamble (Document Settings LaTeX Preamble) and then invoke the macros in ERT (TeX boxes). On the other hand, if you're talking about macros to use in math mode, LyX already supports that. Somewhere in the document body, prior to where you first want to use the macro, click Insert Math Macro. That will create an inset that looks like \newmacroname:=[box][box]. Overwrite newmacroname with the name you want for the macro. In the TeX box, insert the LaTeX code you want the macro to generate. By default, that's what will show up in the GUI when you use the macro; if you want LyX to display something else in the GUI, you can put that into the LyX box. (I always leave the LyX box blank, but then I lack imagination. If the macro expands to something long and gory, I can see where you might want to use a shorter place holder in the GUI.) You can also define your macro with arguments. All this is covered in section 20.2 of the Math help document, so I won't repeat it here. /Paul

And that the lyx2lyx script had failed. sigh LyX 1.5.6 pre-dates 1.6.1 and hence the conversion script does not know how to handle the new format. Yeah, that makes sense. Conversely then I expect when ver 1.6.1 opens a document from ver 1.5.6, it recognizes the old format and converts it so silently that I didn't know it had even run this lyx2lyx thingy. Is there a way to tell lyx 1.6.1 to save in an older lyx format? Yes. FileExportLyx and then choose the desired version. Good. Then at least if I KNOW I'll need to access the durned thing ahead of time... OR is there a conversion script that can convert a (lyx version 0.6.1).lyx file into something lyx 1.5.6 can open??? Yes, the lyx2lyx script of 1.6.x and 1.5.7 can do this. You can * upgrade to 1.5.7 (save but maybe not possible) * replace the lyx2lyx dir with the version from 1.6.x or 1.5.7. (on your own risk, backup the original), * place the lyx2lyx package in usr/local/, say and call by hand. I don't think the one from 1.5.7 can handle it else I wouldn't have had the error that got me to start this thread. But if the one from 1.6.1 can be called by hand, AND doesn't depend on specific libraries that are only installed on the Linux that has lyx 1.6.1, then It might be smart to at least put a copy of it in my ~/bin on the other linux installations... Then If I happen to forget to export after editing with the one instance of lyx ver 1.6.1 I'll still be able to access the document when I'm using a different linux box. (For assorted reasons I multi-boot several versions of linux. On Both my desktop AND my laptop. I never really know ahead of time which one I'll be using when I find the time to work on a book I'm trying to write.) The biggest problem should be that I have about a half dozen .lyx files that I open all at once via a script when I work on the story. But since that script finishes by backing up my .lyxfiles to a usbstick from which I can import the latest changes to my laptop, then I suppose that the version of the script on the linux with the lyx ver 1.6.1 could also mv ${filename}.lyx ${filename}-v161.lyx, then invoke lyx2lyx to save the lyx 1.5.6 version as ${filename}.lyx... That way my script will always open the 1.5.6 compatabe copy. NOTE: I just did a little testing and this can be made to work. But it's not quite as simple as you described... I found the lyx2lyx script and copied it's whole directory to a data partiion. But when I ran: cd ~/lyxstuff /mnt/lyx2lyx/lyx2lyx -t 276 -o ${filename}.lyx ${filename}-v16.lyx It coplained that /mnt/unicodesymbols wasn't there and output a zero length ${filename}.lix file. Introducing eLyXer: LyX to HTML converter
Dear LyX users, LyX is a wonderful editor; its PDF output is perhaps unmatched by other graphical editors. But the most common interchange method of today is HTML, and LyX does not produce good HTML. There are some tools for TeX - HTML conversion, and even LyX - HTML, but the results tend to be poor and rigid. So undeterred by the myriad of similar efforts I set to the task of producing a simple, specialized tool for LyX - HTML conversion, and the result is eLyXer. It is meant to produce acceptable-to-beautiful HTML code, depending on your browser's Unicode and CSS rendering merits. To use it just type at the prompt: $ elyxer document.lyx document.html This command takes a LyX document called (surprisingly) document.lyx, and produces (just as surprisingly) a web page called document.html. Ta-dah! The conversion is complete. For better results you may need to copy the file docs/lyx.css to your working directory, and perhaps customize it a bit. See this wiki page for details: http://wiki.lyx.org/Tools/ELyXer and be sure to read the user guide included in the package. A pretty example can be seen at http://vecinos-productions.com/rayleigh/book.html eLyXer is very much a work in progress, since it only supports a pretty small subset of LyX features -- it doesn't support too many LyX versions or even operating systems either. It is basically a home-grown tool for my needs, and it shows. However I would like to share it with other people who may have a use for it, and in the process expand it for other uses. Some LyX developers have recommended to get it in the hands of users ASAP, to calibrate interest and so you can have a say in future developments. You know, release early, release often is still the mantra. It is a command line tool written in Python 2.5, in case you are not sufficiently scared yet. Those used to smoother sailings can wait until the tool can be accessed from within LyX, which (if there is any interest at all, and as time allows) should be done in the next months. Adventurous souls can download the second public version 0.2 as a .tar.gz file: http://wiki.lyx.org/uploads/Tools/eLyXer/elyxer-20090311.tar.gz or as a zip file: http://wiki.lyx.org/uploads/Tools/eLyXer/elyxer-20090311.zip Let me know how it goes. Enjoy, Alex Fernández (ely...@gmail.com)

Under windows I know it's possible since for example word does it. Question is whether this is possible to know under linux (I guess so since there are panel applets that show the language). Which again comes down to the question whether there is a technical issue why to work this way or not. So you want to change language when the keyboard layout is changed at system level, right? I never thought of these layouts as indicators of the actual language. If Qt gives us this information, we should be able to do it. JMarc For every other program the system language is used for input (alt-shift in my case). So for example when writing mail or using oowriter I change the system language to change input. Lyx is the only exeption where I __have__ to keep the system language for english and bind (f12 in this case) to language hebrew. It makes things incosistent and non-intuitive, esspecially for new users. I agree. For RTL languages, it makes a lot of sense to change the current language together with the system. Advanced users wishing to change the language independently should be able to disable this feature though. Now, you have to find someone willing to implement this feature ;-) FYI, a year or two ago I advocated that the text direction should be based uniquely on the encoding, independently of the language settings, like Qt does. A Style that writes into the preamble is impossible. Frederick Noronha [फ़रेदरिक नोरोनया] wrote: This may sound like a bizarre query: but is it possible to ensure that every new chapter doesn't start on a new page in a book format? Anything is possible. The easy way out is to use the 'article' class. It doesn't have chapters, instead section is the highest level in the numbering hierarchy. So you can start each of your chapters as a new section, and they will start immediately. You may have two such chapters on the same page, if they are short enough. Or one chapter ending high on a page, and the next one starting a bit further down. I have a book with a series of short essays. While these need chapter numbers, and listing in the index, it is not necessary for the essays to begin on a new page. Would be grateful for any help. Thanks, FN Article sections are numbered, and they are listed in the table of contents too. You may list them in the index too, of course. You can't use this scheme if you also need section and subsection numbers in your book. But if you don't, just use sections as chapters and get what you want without a lot of TeX-code. Helge Hafting
Re: Why does lyx use it's own keyboard instead of the systems?
Before you rush into this change - Consider the following usecase: Switching to math - When I'm in math-mode, I always want my keyboard layout to be English. While In windows, The current keyboard layout override the global one (If you put the cursor in an Hebrew context, the language will switch to Hebrew, If you put your cursor in English context - you'll write in English). When I'm writing document, I want the Ctrl+m will be the only thing I need to do in order to start typing math. Ctrl-m Alt-Shift Is match to expensive.. So - If LyX will use the native-system-keyboard-layout - It will have to be able to change it depending the current context (Math\Regular) - And in every OS.
Lyx 1.6.1 - T1{fontenc} not generated under WIndows (but ok under OSX)
I am using LyX under Windows and OSX. For the same file (class: article) OSX-LyX generates \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} whereas Windows-LyX does not. Result: LaTeX/TeX don't not do their job (plenty of error messages apparently related to unrecognised characters in the bibliography) for the Windows version whereas is works perfectly under OSX. (NB: Of course I successfully tried the obvious remedy: add \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} to the user-defined Windows-LyX preamble. But that leaves me wondering why Windows-LyX does not do it in the first place, just like OSX-LyX does it.)

/Paul

David Bickel schrieb: Thanks, Uwe. I reproduced the error using the following file contents. The problem is that the file exported from SWP has a huge amount of definitions in the document preamble that are not used in the further document. For example the counter MaxMatrixCols is set. This can only be done when the package graphics is loaded. When importing to LyX, LyX's tex2lyx converter checks what packages are used in the document. But in your document you don't have any graphic and matrix, therefore tex2lyx kicks out the unneeded package graphics and you then get an error when compiling your document that MaxMatrixCols is unknown. This has been proven useful because every unneeded package may cause problems or interferences with other packages. But although the export from SWP contains unneeded definitions, your file must work. Can you therefore please file a bug report at bugzilla.lyx.org (CC me there), I'll try for fix this for the next LyX release. How should I modify the preamble for proper import? Delete the packages from the preamble of your LaTeX documents that are not used in the further document. But to know that, you must be a LaTeX expert, therefore there's no general workaround. The easiest way is to add all lines starting with \usepackage that have been deleted by LyX to the preamble of the LyX document got by importing a TeX file. To see what packages you need to add, use in LyX the menu View-Source and use there the option complete source. But the available version of lyx was only 1.5.6 and when I tried to open the document I was informed that it had been created by a different version of lyx.

So you can start each of your chapters as a new "section", and they will start immediately. You may have two such "chapters" on the same page, if they are short enough.
"Ctrl-m Alt-Shift" Is match to expensive.. So - If LyX will use the native-system-keyboard-layout - It will have to be able to change it depending the current context (Math\Regular) - And in every OS. I created what little support there is for lilypond in LyX. Mostly because it was easy and interesting to do. In LyX: "Insert->File->External Material" 3. In the external material dialog, change "template" to LilyPond", and insert the correct filename. Your music should now appear when you print the LyX file or export a PDF file. Please let me know if there are problems with this. Supporting lilypond-book would need a different approach, because the processing is different. Helge Hafting
Re: problems with lyx 1.6.1
Gesualdo Scutari wrote: Thanks for your answer. I exported the lyx doc in tex and the only proble I see in the .log file is that there are undefined references. It seems that latex cannot find the bib file, which is in the same directory of the .tex file. In the tex file I call also other files that are in the same place and latex has no problem to see these files. I also reinstalled the latex distribution and lyx as well. But I really don't know what else to do now? When you add the bibtex file to your LyX document, make sure you give a full path to it. That should take care of the problem. rh Many thanks for your assistance. I'm used to write papers to be submitted to IEEE journals. I use both article class in lyx and IEEEtran class. In both cases lyx cannot load the bibliography. I see only [?] in the dvi and there are no references at the end of the document. I use a bibtex file that works properly with any latex compiler. Could you please help me? I was looking for a while on the web, but I cold not fix the problem. Well, it seems that LaTeX can't find the bibliography file for some reason. The best way to debug this kind of thing is to export your LyX file to LaTeX and then process it from the command line. Hopefully, you'll then get the error message from LaTeX. Another option: While LyX is open, and after you've had a failed export, go to LyX's temporary directory (it'd be /tmp/lyxdir.OTHERSTUFF on Linux) and process manually there. Then you're actually processing exactly what LyX would. rh

Any ideas/suggestions? btw as a small poll - what version of lilypond you people use? (see http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5834 ) pavel
