 Dear Gurus for lyx/latex,

I am trying to trace a citation error in my document (koma, book, 2 column,
debian). I divided the document in a master and several subdocuments.
I am getting in /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.TJ4198/lyx_tmpbuf directories for the
 master and the subdocuments.
Could somebody explain the task of these tmp files and its handling by lyx?

The reason is, that I have difficulties to localize the citation error,
because even after taking out the offending citation lyx is still
complaining about it. I have to close lyx and reopen it until I get the
response after removing. I guessed, that the aux file is reused after a new
run of lyx (without closing it down), and wanted to remove it therefore
from the tmp-directory(ies). I am however, uncertain about it, since the
last file which contains the citation error produces no tmp-directory.

Also, why has the master file directory no aux-file, although this is the
file where the list of references is located at the end. The subdirectories
have also a list of references at the end, but they are in a
commentary-note (allowing to view all the references, that is master and
 subdirectories).

Hi Uwe,

Thanks! (extended of course to the whole LyX team).

Just a question: What's the status of elyxer in your installer ?

I think you had planned to bundle elyxer in the installer the same way
you do for imagemagick and other stuff. After installing from the
small installer, LyX uses htlatex on my machine (which fails to
convert the document I tested it with). So I guess it's not bundled in
the small installer. Do I need to download the full installer (huge!),
or is there a way to install elyxer and then reconfigure lyx. Should I
create an HTML2 file format ?

Thanks for the tip,

Best regards,

Yes this was the plan. After discussions with the other LyX developers the new plan is to include it

But even now, LyX will recognize eLyXer when you have it installed. All you have to do is to add the

Well, after doing this, exporting to HTML results only in elyxer.py
being opened in my text editor, LyX window being white until I close
the editor (closing the file is not enough). And no HTML has been
produced, as far as I can see.
I do not have python installed and do not want to (well, there are some
python.exe with LyX and Inkscape), so the only action defined for .py
files is open, which is with my text editor (PSPAD).

Same effect with elyxer 0.23 or 0.24.

It seems that the problem is that lyx tries to launch elyxer.py directly
instead of calling the local python interpreter. But then, if I add
python before elyxer.py in the command for LyX-HTML, python fails to
find elyxer.py (even if I copy it in the scripts or bin folders).

While trying that...

For example, after changing the path to include elyxer, reconfiguring,
exiting LyX, then reopening it, htlatex is still used. I need to
reconfigure a second time, exit, repoen and then it works (well, see
above what I call works).
The same if done the other way: I remove elyxer from the path,
reconfigure, exit, reopen and lyx complains of not finding elyxer. I
then reconfigure again, exit, reopen and it works.

If I reconfigure twice, exit and reopen, it does not work.
If I reconfigure, exit, open, exit, open, it does not work.

You must have Python installed to get it working. The python.exe you find in LyX's bin folder is a
stripped down version of Python to be able to run LyX's python scripts. But for eLyXer you need
more, so for now you have to install Python completely.

I managed to get elyxer working by doing the following:
- copy elyxer.py to the script folder (C:\Program Files\LyX
1.6.3\Resources\scripts) on my machine,
- in Preferences - Converters, in the LyX - HTML, modify the command
to be:

python $$s/scripts/elyxer.py $$i $$o

That works.

The first file sent to elyxer was probably a little too complex. I
killed python after 40 minutes running full on one CPU.
I later gave it a less complex file and it returned a correct and nice
result (where htlatex fails). I appreciate the fact that the home-made
character styles are converted to a Flex CSS class, which can then be
created in CSS.

Tiny bugs / feature requests for elyxer and LyX (probably already known):

1-
Figure numbers are missing in the references. The link with a little
blue arrow works, but my text is full of Fig. without figure number.

2-
The HTML file is returned in a subfolder, so all images links are
broken. When moving the file in the parent folder (where the lyx file
is, and where the pdf/ps/TeX are exported, it works fine.

3-
There is one place in my file where I used the \unittwo tip given in
LyX docs (Appendix A Typographic Advice of Math docs).

The LyX file at that point is:
\begin_inset Formula $\unit[950]{\mu m}$
\end_inset

The view source panel shows:
$\unit[950]{\mu m}$

The pdf export is fine, but elyxer outputs:
span class=formulaspan
class=unknown\unit/span[950]μim/i/span

which results in Firefox in:
\unit[950]μm

But overall, it looks already very good.

Olivier

Put it into ERT (InsertTeX Code) at the very beginning of the algorithm
float, and then you can just use the enumerate environment. Because such
redeclarations are local to an environment, you won't have

Actually, you're going to have the wrong sort of indentation doing it
that way. So you will need to adjust that. Adding something like

   \setlength\leftmargin{0pt}
might do it, but you'll have to play with other list settings to get it
just right, I think. See here:

http://www-h.eng.cam.ac.uk/help/tpl/textprocessing/teTeX/latex/latex2e-html/ltx-260.html
for details on other lengths you can change. Maybe you could try
something like:

   \setlength\labelsep{???}
to restore indentation, but I'm not sure what to put in there.

Sorry this is so complicated, but when you want to get automatic
numbering of a special kind, then you're basically programming.

Alternatively, you might be able to use the program listing environment
to do what you want. You can InsertProgram Listing in your algorithm
float, and then see if listings provides for customization of line
numbers. The docs are here:

I'm not myself familiar with listings, though.

Quite cleverly done. I believe that the version of Python distributed

This is the one I'm mostly interested on.

I later gave it a less complex file and it returned a correct and nice

 2-
The HTML file is returned in a subfolder, so all images links are broken.
When moving the file in the parent folder (where the lyx file is, and where
the pdf/ps/TeX are exported, it works fine.

This is a design decision of Pavel Sanda (and for the record, I do not

There is the possibility of copying all referred image files, convert

still figuring it out.

 3-
There is one place in my file where I used the \unittwo tip given in LyX

The \unit tag is not supported yet. If you send me a sample doc I will
try to make it work.

Yes, I know I am requesting a lot of sample files from you; but that

to be exact _my_ design decision was that view-html should never produce

one byproduct of such solution is needless cluttering of document directory

second and worse byproduct is that it will rewrite already exported html

purposes - nobody wants to destroy exported result by some intermediate file.

thirdly it would also break the habits how we treat all other formats.

This will have the consequence that your text, even if monolingually

Well, babel at least isn't required for spell checking. However, in a
broad picture there are two ways babel can be used:

1) Old way User manually adds \foriegnlanguage tags to quoted text,
loan words, etc.
2) New way LyX stores language text is in, and outputs tags to
switch between lanuages.

With the (1), if the user puts \foriegnlanguage tags around all quote
etc., producing a UK edition from a US addition is trivial: Switch the
document type to UK, spellcheck (hopefully the author has avoided
ambiguous dates etc.), and 5 minutes later we have a version of the
document in UK English.

With (2) it is not so simple. The obvious way is to switch the
document type to UK English, but then LyX fights your decision by
adding \foriegnlanguage tags around everything. You can fix this by
selecting All and reseting the language. Then however, all the quotes
are now in UK English as well, even e.g. French quotes.

AFAICT, LyX has no way of distinguishing between (a) This is text is
in UK English because this is a UK English document and (b) This
text is in UK English, because it is a quote, name etc.. This
distinction seems to be useful when preparing the same document in
different dialects.

We could add an additional language Default to allow us to
distinguish between (a) and (b), if we felt this was important.

 Dear Gurus for lyx/latex,

I am trying to trace a citation error in my document (koma, book, 2 column,

The same if done the other way: I remove elyxer from the path,

If I reconfigure twice, exit and reopen, it does not work.

You must have Python installed to get it working. The python.exe you find in LyX's bin folder is a

This sounds like a problem with your LaTeX installation more than your
LyX installation. You might try reinstalling/updating both.

FYI, I use LyX routinely on Mac and have found it to be very stable

Put it into ERT (InsertTeX Code) at the very beginning of the algorithm
float, and then you can just use the enumerate environment. Because such
redeclarations are local to an environment, you won't have

Actually, you're going to have the wrong sort of indentation doing it
that way. So you will need to adjust that. Adding something like

   \setlength\leftmargin{0pt}
might do it, but you'll have to play with other list settings to get it
just right, I think. See here:

http://www-h.eng.cam.ac.uk/help/tpl/textprocessing/teTeX/latex/latex2e-html/ltx-260.html
for details on other lengths you can change. Maybe you could try
something like:

   \setlength\labelsep{???}
to restore indentation, but I'm not sure what to put in there.

Sorry this is so complicated, but when you want to get automatic
numbering of a special kind, then you're basically programming.

Alternatively, you might be able to use the program listing environment
to do what you want. You can InsertProgram Listing in your algorithm
float, and then see if listings provides for customization of line
numbers. The docs are here:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/listings/listings.pdf

I'm not myself familiar with listings, though.

Quite cleverly done. I believe that the version of Python distributed
with LyX should run eLyXer just fine.

The first file sent to elyxer was probably a little too complex. I killed
python after 40 minutes running full on one CPU.

This is the one I'm mostly interested on.

I later gave it a less complex file and it returned a correct and nice
result (where htlatex fails). I appreciate the fact that the home-made

Odd, captions should work fine. Again, please send me a sample

 2-
The HTML file is returned in a subfolder, so all images links are broken.
When moving the file in the parent folder (where the lyx file is, and where
the pdf/ps/TeX are exported, it works fine.

This is a design decision of Pavel Sanda (and for the record, I do not
agree with it):
  http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-de...@lists.lyx.org/msg150892.html
There is the possibility of copying all referred image files, convert
them and then copy them back. This approach requires more work and I'm
still figuring it out.

 3-
There is one place in my file where I used the \unittwo tip given in LyX
docs (Appendix A Typographic Advice of Math docs).

The \unit tag is not supported yet. If you send me a sample doc I will
try to make it work.

Yes, I know I am requesting a lot of sample files from you; but that

to be exact _my_ design decision was that view-html should never produce
new files to appear inside document directory (this should happen only when
one chooses export.)

one byproduct of such solution is needless cluttering of document directory
without users request.

second and worse byproduct is that it will rewrite already exported html
file when user requests view-html action which usually has only debugging
purposes - nobody wants to destroy exported result by some intermediate file.

thirdly it would also break the habits how we treat all other formats.

but the implementation details are up to you decision and i have no opinion

Give it some hours. But I also wrote:

There you can get it right now.

Hi Uwe,

Thanks! (extended of course to the whole LyX team).

Just a question: What's the status of elyxer in your installer ?

I think you had planned to bundle elyxer in the installer the same way
you do for imagemagick and other stuff. After installing from the
"small" installer, LyX uses htlatex on my machine (which fails to
convert the document I tested it with). So I guess it's not bundled in
the small installer. Do I need to download the "full" installer (huge!),
or is there a way to install elyxer and then reconfigure lyx. Should I
create an HTML2 file format ?

Thanks for the tip,

Best regards,

Olivier

Yes this was the plan. After discussions with the other LyX developers the new plan is to include it
only to the complete installer and to let people choose if they want to install eLyXer or not.
I tried to do implement this in the installer, but haven't found the time right now. Therefore I

But even now, LyX will recognize eLyXer when you have it installed. All you have to do is to add the
path to the file elyxer.py in the PATH prefix in LyX's preferences. Then reconfigure LyX and eLyXer
should work. Could you please try this out? A feed back from you if this works would help me.

Unavailable document classes

2009-06-05 Thread Walter van Holst

Hello,

I'm a somewhat infrequent user of LyX on Mac OS X. About every other
update (my current version is 1.6.1), most of the document classes
become unavailable. That is LyX can edit documents in them, but not
produce output.

How do I prevent this from happening? This is an exceedingly annoying
'feature' of LyX.

 Walter

I don't think that is so uncommon, maybe you simply didn't think that
your problem was related to watermarks and didn't search for the right
thing.

It is a matter of using the right keywords. The following URL should help:
http://www.tex.ac.uk/cgi-bin/texfaq2html?label=watermark

Not at all. Just put an asterisk after \AddToShipoutPicture, i.e.,
use \AddToShipoutPicture* and only the first produced page will have
the border.

Well, after doing this, exporting to HTML results only in elyxer.py
being opened in my text editor, LyX window being "white" until I close
the editor (closing the file is not enough). And no HTML has been
produced, as far as I can see.
I do not have python installed and do not want to (well, there are some
python.exe with LyX and Inkscape), so the only action defined for .py
files is "open", which is with my text editor (PSPAD).

Same effect with elyxer 0.23 or 0.24.

It seems that the problem is that lyx tries to launch elyxer.py directly
instead of calling the local python interpreter. But then, if I add
python before elyxer.py in the command for LyX->HTML, python fails to
find elyxer.py (even if I copy it in the scripts or bin folders).

Any idea ?

While trying that...
... I also notice a strange behaviour with reconfigure changing the
path: I need to do it twice (including exiting/reopening) to have
changes taken into account.

Olivier

You must have Python installed to get it working. The python.exe you find in LyX's bin folder is a
stripped down version of Python to be able to run LyX's python scripts. But for eLyXer you need
more, so for now you have to install Python completely.

I managed to get elyxer working by doing the following:
- copy elyxer.py to the script folder ("C:\Program Files\LyX
1.6.3\Resources\scripts") on my machine,
- in Preferences -> Converters, in the LyX -> HTML, modify the command
to be:

python $$s/scripts/elyxer.py $$i $$o

That works.

The first file sent to elyxer was probably a little too complex. I
killed python after 40 minutes running full on one CPU.
I later gave it a less complex file and it returned a correct and nice
result (where htlatex fails). I appreciate the fact that the home-made
character styles are converted to a "Flex" CSS class, which can then be
created in CSS.

Tiny bugs / feature requests for elyxer and LyX (probably already known):

1-
Figure numbers are missing in the references. The link with a little
blue arrow works, but my text is full of "Fig. " without figure number.

2-
The HTML file is returned in a subfolder, so all images links are
broken. When moving the file in the parent folder (where the lyx file
is, and where the pdf/ps/TeX are exported, it works fine.

3-
There is one place in my file where I used the "\unittwo" tip given in
LyX docs (Appendix A "Typographic Advice" of Math docs).

The LyX file at that point is:
\begin_inset Formula $\unit[950]{\mu m}$
\end_inset

The "view source" panel shows:
$\unit[950]{\mu m}$

The pdf export is fine, but elyxer outputs:
class="unknown">\unit[950]μm

which results in Firefox in:
\unit[950]μm

But overall, it looks already very good.

Best regards,

Olivier

Algorithms in LyX

I want to write pseudo code that will number my lines like so:

Is there any way to do this? I have no idea how to use packages and haven't

This sounds like a problem with your LaTeX installation more than your
LyX installation. You might try reinstalling/updating both.

FYI, I use LyX routinely on Mac and have found it to be very stable

It's a matter of LyX's not having found the LaTeX classes. For what it's
worth, I think this is a problem with how software works on the Mac, but
Bennett (who packages LyX for the Mac) might have a better idea.

I really have no idea. We check all the standard locations for LaTeX
installations, and I don't remember other reports of such problems.
(Does anyone else experience this? If so, please give some details
about your system and LaTeX installation ... and anything unusual you

Well, the first question then is how to do it in LaTeX, and to do that
you need to produce some sort of list, I'd guess. Alternatively, you
could just use the enumeration environment and change the numbering
format. This will give you the correct LaTeX output, though it won't
show properly on the screen. Something like this will do the trick:

\renewcommand\labelenumi{(\arabic{enumi})}
\renewcommand\labelenumii{(\arabic{enumi}.\arabic{enumii})}
\renewcommand\labelenumiii{(\arabic{enumi}.\arabic{enumii}.\arabic{enumiii})}
I'll leave yo to do \labelenumiv.
