ANNOUNCE: LyX version 2.0.0 is released

2011-05-08 Thread Pavel Sanda
Public release of LyX version 2.0.0
===

We are proud to announce the public release of LyX 2.0.0.

With this release, LyX celebrates 15 years of existence, and we start
a new family of 2.x releases to acknowledge LyX's passing from a child
to an adult. We hope you will celebrate this anniversary with us.

LyX 2.0.0 is the culmination of two and half years of hard work. This
release begins a new series of 2.0.x which will incrementally improve its
stability as the time passes.

An overview of the new features can be found here:
  http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/NewInLyX20

You can download LyX 2.0.0 from http://www.lyx.org/Download/ .

We hope you will enjoy the result!

The file RELEASE-NOTES lists some known issues and problems compared
to the current stable releases (LyX 1.6.x). We strongly recommend that
packagers of LyX on various platforms and distributions read this file.

As with any major release, this one comes with lot of new features but
also some bugs. If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.0.0, either email
the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org), or open a bug
report at http://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome .

If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the
documentation that comes with LyX (under Help) and the LyX wiki, which you
will find at http://wiki.lyx.org/ . You can also send email to the LyX users'
list (lyx-users at lists.lyx.org).

LyX 1.6 and 2.0 side-by-side?

2011-05-08 Thread Ken
Hi. Is it possible to have both LyX 1.6 and Lyx 2.0 installed at the
same time? Are there any consequences to having both installed?

I would like to try LyX 2.0 but don't want to break anything on my
current work and want to go back to 1.6 easily if necessary.

Thanks

I am on Windows XP.

I believe all settings are stored in C:\Documents and

different set of settings will be stored in a folder for 2.0. Is this
correct? Are there other settings/folders which are used by 2.0 which
might interfere with my current 1.6 settings?

Thanks,

Yes, also known as %APPDATA%\lyx16. LyX 2.0 stores its settings in
%APPDATA%\LyX2.0. Some settings are also stored in the registry (mostly what
position on the screen windows were left in), but these are also separated by
 major version.

The only possible conflict I think of that both install the virtual printer
metafile to eps converter, which helps with including graphics in LyX
documents. Installing both isn't a problem, but I'm not sure what happens when
you *uninstall* one of them - perhaps this printer gets removed? I'm not sure.
If this happens though (assuming you use graphics and even notice), an
uninstall/reinstall of the remaining version should fix it. To make sure your
settings are unaffected, uncheck delete settings when uninstalling.

LyX - MacUpdate listing

MacUpdate listing accordingly. However, when I attempted to download the

Many thanks in advance for your help.

If the problem is with the caption as it appears in the float (as opposed to how

All else failing, try compiling a minimal example and posting it here.

Re: How to install Lyx 2.0 side by side with 1.6 on a MAC?

2011-05-08 Thread Jens Nöckel
Yes, it's possible, and I understand why you want to do it (why throw out a
version that works fine, if you're not sure about possible bugs in the new
version?) So you could do the following:

1)
assuming you have LyX version 1.6.x installed the usual way, rename
/Appplications/LyX.app to something else, e.g. LyX-1-6.app.
2)
Just for safety, I would make a backup copy of the LyX-1.6 folder in
~/Library/Application Support/ (ideally, this shouldn't be necessary, because a
new LyX-2.0 folder is created)
3)
Download and install LyX version 2

Now whenever you want to open a file with the older LyX, drag it onto the icon
for LyX-1-6 instead of the LyX application.

One potential headache is to make sure LyX 2 is the default for opening LyX
documents. You do that by highlighting any LyX file and going to the Get Info
menu, then checking the open with... entry. It can sometimes be hard to make
that setting stick for all files, especially if you go back and forth between
old and new versions. So during this transition period, it's probably good to
check the About LyX menu once in a while to verify you're using the version
you intended.

Be aware that files saved normally from LyX 2 won't be readable by LyX 1.6, so
after some time you'll probably be happier working with the new version.

Yes, it's possible, and I understand why you want to do it (why throw out a
version that works fine, if you're not sure about possible bugs in the new
version?) So you could do the following:

 1)
assuming you have LyX version 1.6.x installed the usual way,
 rename /Appplications/LyX.app to something else, e.g. LyX-1-6.app.
 2)
Just for safety, I would make a backup copy of the LyX-1.6 folder in
  ~/Library/Application Support/ (ideally, this shouldn't be necessary,
because a new LyX-2.0 folder is created)
 3)
Download and install LyX version 2

Now whenever you want to open a file with the older LyX, drag it onto the
icon for LyX-1-6 instead of the LyX application.

One potential headache is to make sure LyX 2 is the default for opening LyX
documents. You do that by highlighting any LyX file and going to the Get
Info menu, then checking the open with... entry. It can sometimes be hard
to make that setting stick for all files, especially if you go back and
forth between old and new versions. So during this transition period, it's
probably good to check the About LyX menu once in a while to verify you're
 using the version you intended.

Be aware that files saved normally from LyX 2 won't be readable by LyX 1.6,
so after some time you'll probably be happier working with the new version.

Change margins to handle recto and verso pages in Memoir

2011-05-08 Thread george legge
Hi to the most helpful users-list I know,

I am using memoir to print a book, with a wide margin for graphics.

As I don't need this wide empty margin when printing pagenotes,

I need to change margins for the page notes at the end of each chapter.

I can do this with the preamble code:

 \newenvironment{changemargin}[2]{%

\begin{list}{}{%

\setlength{\leftmargin}{#1}%

\setlength{\rightmargin}{#2}}%

\item[]}{\end{list}}

Then in ERT in the text:

\clearpage

\begin{changemargin}{0cm}{-2.8cm}

\printpagenotes*

\end{changemargin}

Since some page notes run for two pages, I need to cope with recto and
verso pages, whereas the above values need to be set up for one or the
other.

I have tried innermargin outermargin or spinemargin edgemargin with no
recognition.

Do I need to use Boolean programing (ifrecto or ifverso) to handle this
switching of margins, or does memoir have a simpler way?

I would greatly appreciate advice on this one.

Cheers, George Legge

You should use LyX-2.0.0-2-Installer-Bundle.exe (whereas the one for those with

Make sure you are using LyX-2.0.0-2 and NOT LyX-2.0.0-1, which seems to still

Regular expression documentation

2011-05-08 Thread Andrew Parsloe
As the ability to search for regular expressions is one of the `big' new
features of LyX 2.0, I think there should be a more expansive treatment
of them than the brief section in the User's Guide.

TeXworks is installed with MikTeX these days and has what looks to be an
excellent section in its manual (Appendix B) on regular expressions --
tables of them with introductory and explanatory comment. It looks more
helpful to me than the Wikipedia article referenced in the User's Guide.
The appendix begins, `As TEXworks is built on Qt4, the available regular
expressions—which are often referred to as regexp—are a subset of those
found in Qt4' so presumably these will be the same as are used in LyX.
Since TeXworks is distributed under the Gnu GPL version 2, perhaps it
would be possible to `borrow/share' the appendix and insert it into the
Additonal Features (?) manual (with due acknowledgement)?

Please feel free to write a draft of this section; you can open the
existing manual and save it as an ordinary file, then activate change
tracking and so as you will.

I do not myself know exactly what regex syntax is supported, but maybe
experimentation is the best way to find out, anyway.

How to install Lyx 2.0 side by side with 1.6 on a MAC?

Hello,

I would like to know if it is possible and how to install Lyx 2.0 on a MAC
OS X (10.6 Snow Leopard) as a a separate installation so that it doesn't
interfere with the 1.6 installation.
Thank you for your cooperation

Hi. Is it possible to have both LyX 1.6 and Lyx 2.0 installed at the
same time? Are there any consequences to having both installed?

I would like to try LyX 2.0 but don't want to break anything on my
current work and want to go back to 1.6 easily if necessary.

 Thanks

LyX - MacUpdate listing

2011-05-08 Thread Trevor M - MacUpdate
Hi there

I noticed there's an updated version LyX, and attempted to update its
MacUpdate listing accordingly. However, when I attempted to download the
file from:

I got an error.

Is there any chance you could check this download link and get back to me

Many thanks in advance for your help.

If the problem is with the caption as it appears in the float (as opposed to how
it is listed in a list of figures or some other index thing), have you looked at

Change margins to handle recto and verso pages in Memoir

2011-05-08 Thread george legge
Hi to the most helpful users-list I know,

I am using memoir to print a book, with a wide margin for graphics.

As I don't need this wide empty margin when printing pagenotes,

I need to change margins for the page notes at the end of each chapter.

I can do this with the preamble code:

 \newenvironment{changemargin}[2]{%

\begin{list}{}{%

\setlength{\leftmargin}{#1}%

\setlength{\rightmargin}{#2}}%

\item[]}{\end{list}}

Then in ERT in the text:

\clearpage

\begin{changemargin}{0cm}{-2.8cm}

\printpagenotes*

\end{changemargin}

I do not myself know exactly what regex syntax is supported, but maybe
experimentation is the best way to find out, anyway.

Thanks

2011-05-08 Thread Ken
I am on Windows XP.

I believe all settings are stored in C:\Documents and
Settings\Ken\Application Data\lyx16 for 1.6 so assume an entirely
different set of settings will be stored in a folder for 2.0. Is this
correct? Are there other settings/folders which are used by 2.0 which
might interfere with my current 1.6 settings?

Thanks,
Ken

LyX - MacUpdate listing

2011-05-08 Thread Trevor M - MacUpdate
Hi there

I noticed there's an updated version LyX, and attempted to update its
MacUpdate listing accordingly. However, when I attempted to download the
file from:

ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.0.0/LyX-2.0.0+qt4.dmg

I got an error.

Is there any chance you could check this download link and get back to me
when it's working again?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Best wishes

What's a "pld"?

If the problem is with the caption as it appears in the float (as opposed to how
it is listed in a list of figures or some other index thing), have you looked at
the source (View > View Source) to see if something funky is going on in the
caption?

One potential headache is to make sure LyX 2 is the default for opening LyX
documents. You do that by highlighting any LyX file and going to the "Get Info"
menu, then checking the "open with..." entry. It can sometimes be hard to make
that setting stick for all files, especially if you go back and forth between
old and new versions. So during this transition period, it's probably good to
check the "About LyX" menu once in a while to verify you're using the version
you intended.

Be aware that files saved normally from LyX 2 won't be readable by LyX 1.6, so
after some time you'll probably be happier working with the new version.

Once LyX-1.6.10 comes out (which won't be long), it will be able to
read LyX-2.0 files. So even this won't be a problem.

If you think you have found a bug in LyX 2.0.0, either
email
the LyX developers' mailing list (lyx-devel at lists.lyx.org), or open a
bug

report at http://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome .

If you have trouble using LyX or have a question, consult the

I have the exact same question but on Ubuntu Linux 10.04 (Lucid).

There were some plans to provide a PPA but I'm not sure that this was

Toss 1.6!

Done that when rc1 came out and never looked back.

Change margins to handle recto and verso pages in Memoir

2011-05-08 Thread george legge
Hi to the most helpful users-list I know,

I am using memoir to print a book, with a wide margin for graphics.

As I don't need this wide empty margin when printing pagenotes,

I need to change margins for the page notes at the end of each chapter.

I can do this with the preamble code:

 \newenvironment{changemargin}[2]{%

\begin{list}{}{%

\setlength{\leftmargin}{#1}%

\setlength{\rightmargin}{#2}}%

\item[]}{\end{list}}

Then in ERT in the text:

\clearpage

\begin{changemargin}{0cm}{-2.8cm}

\printpagenotes*

\end{changemargin}

Since some page notes run for two pages, I need to cope with recto and
verso pages, whereas the above values need to be set up for one or the
other.

I have tried innermargin & outermargin or spinemargin & edgemargin with no
recognition.

Do I need to use Boolean programing (ifrecto or ifverso) to handle this
switching of margins, or does memoir have a simpler way?

I would greatly appreciate advice on this one.

Cheers, George Legge

LyX 2.0 on Windows

2011-05-08 Thread Stephen Harwin
Hi,

I am not able download 2.0 for Windows from http://www.lyx.org/Download/#toc3.
Which download do I grab from the mirror site if this is the first time I am
installing a latex package?

Thanks
Steve

Re: LyX 2.0 on Windows

2011-05-08 Thread Jim Oldfield
You should use LyX-2.0.0-2-Installer-Bundle.exe (whereas the one for those with
LaTeX already installed is LyX-2.0.0-2-Installer.exe).

Make sure you are using LyX-2.0.0-2 and NOT LyX-2.0.0-1, which seems to still
be
on at least one mirror.

Sorry,

I do not seem to be able to find a 2.0.0-2 installer for download let alone a
Bundle. Can you send me a link? Most of the mirror sites fail.

Thanks

Here is the direct link you want
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.0.0/LyX-2.0.0-2-Installer-Bundle.exe
I just tested it, and it is working (not as fast, but working).

BTW, I prefer to install MikTeX with the net installer and then install the
LyX alone, but you decide.

If you want to install them as I do, just install MikTeX from
http://mirror.ctan.org/systems/win32/miktex/setup/setup-2.9.3959.exe .
And then install LyX from
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.0.0/LyX-2.0.0-2-Installer.exe .

Take care,
