Re: unicode superscripts in the bibliography
Dear Stefano, Thank you for your answer. I followed the Lyx wiki for biber/biblatex but now: - the references are not formatted, only the shortcut/nickname appears - there is no bibliography at the end of the document (yes, I inserted the bibtex bibliography in a comment and the \printbibliography command in ERT). Error on Memoir after Linux upgrade
Hi all, I googled this thing from here to eternity, and didn't find anything helpful. This happened right after I replaced Ubuntu 11.10 with Xubuntu 12.10. This book, whose document class is based on Memoir, got four error messages like this: Class memoir Error: The pagestyle 'cleared' is marked as an alias page style. Here are the four error locations it reported: \makeevenhead{cleared}{}{}{} \makeoddhead{cleared}{}{}{} \makeevenfoot{cleared}{}{\thepage}{} \makeoddfoot{cleared}{}{\thepage}{} Right now I'm assuming this is caused by either my failure to install something, or a change within Memoir. How to compile with the new texmf
Hi all, I'll relate this to you, because it might happen to you... I use scripts to personalize and compile my eBooks for each order. I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to Xubuntu 12.10, and one of my books broke. A little investigation showed that it got to .dvi OK, but then things went south. Eventually I narrowed it down to a failure in makeindex. It turns out that now texmf changed so that it defaults to openout_any = p, which precludes running makeindex on an absolute filename. If you look around the net, you'll see people suggesting changing openout_any in texmf.conf, but that's a bad idea for security reasons. Security is the reason they've adopted the new default. I finally found the right way to do it. Just before the call to makeindex, I added these two lines: TEXMFOUTPUT=/absolute/path/to/temp/files export TEXMFOUTPUT In hindsight, an even better way might have been: TEXMFOUTPUT=/absolute/path/to/temp/files makeindex So, if your scripts start breaking and you suspect they're failing on makeindex, and you get an error message saying something about openout_any is p, try what I did and it just might fix it. I sometimes find myself upgrading things for no reason and sometimes I pay the price. You are right that there are potential disadvantages to upgrading. In this case, I think the risk is small if you do what I suggested (the daily PPA and install lyx2.0) because of two reasons: 1) This should bring in no extra dependencies (I don't think LyX ever changes dependencies between minor releases) and 2) Instead of upgrading your LyX, this installs alongside your existing distribution. Then, to run LyX you can either do 'lyx yourFile.lyx' (which is what you currently have installed) or 'lyx2.0 yourFile.lyx' (which is the version from the PPA). lyx2.0 also uses a different home folder by default, ~/.lyx2.0 I think so in theory 'lyx' should never know the existence of its hopefully more mature older sibling, 'lyx2.0'. However, although I've found this to be true in practice, you never know. Of course, things can always go wrong, especially since the PPAs are new and although we haven't heard any problems (at all) I don't think many people have been using them. Best, Scott

Best, Scott

Do we really have to reinvent the wheel given that Qt has all this information? I understand it would be significant work to break down and rebuild our painter on top of Qt, but I also understand it would solve many (performance and rendering) problems. Jürgen
Has anybody run into this or do you have an idea of its cause and/or solution? Thanks SteveT

Do you refer both to the PDF output and the LyX-internal display? I understand that the display in the LyX view is broken, but I do not understand why the PDF output should be, as long as the LaTeX source preview is correct. Did you use \setmainfont[Script=Devanagari]{Chandas} in the preamble, while having "Use non-TeX fonts" checked and having selected _no_ particular font from the dropdown boxes? This setting seems to work for me. However, I cannot read Devanagari, so I cannot really judge whether the output is correct. As far as the LyX view is concerned, the problem comes from the fact that we paint character by character, which breaks ligatures. As far as I can see, the situation improves if you put the following line in your preferences file in ~/.lyx (if you do not have a "preferences" file, do an arbitrary change in Tools > Preferences, and it will be generated): \force_paint_single_char false You also might need to uncheck "Spellcheck continuously" in Tools > Preferences > Language Settings > Spellchecker. This workaround probably has some disadvantages (else we would not force this by default), but I don't remember which. Jürgen

Check the following: 1. you have a line in your preamble (Document>>Settings>>LaTeX preamble) that says: \addbibresource(/absolute/path/to/my/reference/file.bib} Notice that the .bib extension is required AND you need the absolute path 2. You have biber selected as bibtex processor in Document>>Settings>>Bibliography>>Processor 3. your bibtex file is actually encoded in unicode (UTF8) If all fails, check the biber log, which you can reach via Document>>LaTeX log>>log type BibTeX and post it here Cheers, Stefano > What is going wrong? > > Frédéric Parrenin > > > > > 2013/1/25 stefano franchi > >> Frederic, >> >> which bibliography processor do you use? bibtex does not support unicode >> and I guess it never will. Are you using the LyX Ubuntu PPA? http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnUbuntu#toc3 It might be worth using that (e.g. daily PPA lyx2.0 which is what will turn into LyX 2.0.6) and seeing if the problem is fixed. If not, do you have a MWE? Scott

My layout file had \makeevenhead{cleared}{}{}{} \makeoddhead{cleared}{}{}{} \makeevenfoot{cleared}{}{\thepage}{} \makeoddfoot{cleared}{}{\thepage}{} I commented those out, the problem went away, and I couldn't see any side effects. Memoir docs are so sparse I don't know what the purpose of those four lines were, but everything appears OK now. Thanks SteveT

Upgrading an app beyond what comes with the distro (Xubuntu 12.10 in this case) is a last resort in my life. Distros are kind of like a Chinese puzzle, and if you upgrade an app, a lot of times you need to upgrade a dependency, and that breaks other things... I never upgrade as a diagnostic test, but only if: 1) I'm sure it will fix it (known problem with my version, etc), or 2) I want the new version anyway (probably because of enhanced features) So far the LyX that ships with Xubuntu 12.10 looks like it's working just fine. All my eBooks compile on it, although I had to do a little fancy footwork with makeindex, which I'll discuss in a separate email. So, if anyone's using Memoir and things stop working when you upgrade, it might be as simple as commenting out stuff with the word "cleared" in it. Thanks SteveT
How to compile with the new texmf
"Hi all, I'll relate this to you, because it might happen to you... Just before the call to makeindex, I added these two lines: TEXMFOUTPUT=/absolute/path/to/temp/files export TEXMFOUTPUT In hindsight, an even better way might have been: TEXMFOUTPUT=/absolute/path/to/temp/files makeindex So, if your scripts start breaking and you suspect they're failing on makeindex, and you get an error message saying something about "openout_any is p", try what I did and it just might fix it.
