Re: Physical units

2007-06-04 Thread Tim Michelsen

Could this be adapted in the documentation, please?

We aren't responsible for documentation of external packages.

I know that very well.
I took my example from p. 95, section: 6.6.5.2.
http://wiki.lyx.org/uploads/LyX/Manuals/1.4.2/UserGuide.pdf

The protected space: It is used to tell LYX (and LATEX) not to break the
line at that

point. This may be necessary to avoid unlucky linebreaks, like in:
A good documentation should weight no more than 1
kg.
Obviously, it would be a good thing to put a protected space between “1”
and “kg”.
A protected space is set with Insert . Special Formatting . Protected
Space or with C-Space.

Maybe there issue disussed in this thread here could be added there?

Regards,
Tim

Concerning units, don't forget that there is only a hlaf space between
number and units. A half space is produced in LyX with the shortcut
Ctrl-Shift Space (menu Insert- Formatting - Thin space), see also
the attached example.
Thank you for clarifying! I did try the packages units/SIunits but then
changed and used all units with a protected space after the numbers as
recommended in the documentation.

Could this be adapted in the documentation, please?

In section 6.5.5 of the handbook of my package there's still recommended
to use a proptected spaces between numbers and units:

A good documentation should not weigh more than 1 kg

I am still using 1.4.3 (Ubuntu) so maybe this has already been changed.

Kind regards,
Timmie

It should definively be a _half_ space, which is automatically protected. This is defined in DIN EN

Well, if you put it inside an equation, then the thin space itself *is*
protected. BTW, inside an equation you can also type in the thin space
as \, .

I created a math macro for myself called units which does the following:

#1\,\mathrm{#2}

Then, to type in units you just have to Ctrl-m (enter math mode) \units
 space (enter the value) RIGHT (or LEFT in an RTL paragraph) (enter the
units) space space. The result has a protected thin space, with the
units in roman letters, as they should be.

Regarding the 'normal text mode' in maths mode; it works for most text but not

I use the SIunits package for latex to do all my units. It is a bit
cumbersome until you get the hang of it but then works great. I just
include it in the LyX preamble, here is what I use in the preamble for
siunits:

% new commands using SIunits.sty %%%
\usepackage[thickqspace,thickspace,amssymb]{SIunits}
\usepackage{amssymb,amsmath,amsbsy,amsfonts}
\newcommand{\ev}{\electronvolt}
\newcommand{\kg}{\kilogram}
\newcommand{\cm}{\centi\meter}
\newcommand{\npcmcubed}{\cm\rpcubed}
\newcommand{\npcmsquared}{\cm\rpsquared}
\newcommand{\npsecond}{\reciprocal\second}
\newcommand{\nm}{\nano\meter}
\newcommand{\mps}{\meter\per\second}
\newcommand{\npmps}{\meter\usk\npsecond}

Cheers,

Brian

In math mode,
1) insert text '?'
2) select text '?'
3) right click to bring up math panel
4) left click on 4th button on top row
5) select Normal text mode

The question mark should now be upright.

Re: Physical units

2007-05-30 Thread Dov Feldstern
You could probably create a macro for it, which would make the input
much easier --- you would only need to use the ERT once, when creating
the macro. (I haven't use the SIunits package, maybe it's simple enough
to use that macros are not even necessary; but if you find yourself
typing a lot of ERT over and over again, it may be helpful).

To learn about how to create and use macros in math, see the User Guide,
Section 5.6. I think there's been quite a bit of development regarding
math macros going on lately, I'm not sure though how much of it is
already in the beta versions.

Good luck!

As you are using LyX 1.5 you can enter it directly via the keyboard. The only thing you have to do
is to use the default encoding for English in your case. Attached is a LyX-file showing this.

You can alternatively use the ERT-command
\textmu
when you add this to your document preamble:
\usepackage{textcomp}

Concerning units, don't forget that there is only a hlaf space between number and units. A half
space is produced in LyX with the shortcut Ctrl-Shift Space (menu Insert- Formatting - Thin
space), see also the attached example.

In math mode,
1) insert text '?'
2) select text '?'
3) right click to bring up math panel
4) left click on 4th button on top row
5) select Normal text mode
