Pauls’s comment was enough for me to fix the problem. It had nothing to do with

Your first step is to copy the document and reduce it to an MWE. An MWE
is the tiniest possible document that still reproduces the symptom.
Armed with the MWE, you can either troubleshoot it yourself or actually
get help.

Many thanks; your question was enough for me to find the problem. For some
reason, the Default Output Format with tex fonts was blank—I fixed this. I have
no idea how this happened all of a sudden. Anyway it works now.

You are right. :-)

The fix is quite simple as you suggest, replace xrange with range.

One small note about the above, 2.4 can still work with Python 2.
Fortunately, in this regard, the above change is compatible with Python
2 and so it is the correct, and safe, choice to apply to LyX 2.4.

I took this opportunity to check for other occurrences of xrange in 2.4
and that was the last case.

Yes, this is because the file format in the master repository is not
the same than in the released alpha version. If you have saved files
with the former, you need the former to edit them. I wouldn't use alpha

Works fine for me Ubuntu 18.04, TexLive, Lyx 2.3.3

I noticed is that that the word "France" is in French rather than
English. Could this be giving the problem?

I live in Canada and automatically set up for English & French when
installing. Could you be on a machine that does not have French
installed?

I reproduced the error (LyX 2.3.3 on Linux Mint 18), probably because I
do not have a French language pack installed. The error lies
(appropriately) in the word "France" in the address. If you select the
word and click the button for text style (or use Edit > Text Style >
Customized), you'll see the language is set to French. Change it to one
of the English variants (or default) and you should be good to go.

How did you install it? In Linux, if I install such a file manually,
then I have to
run a program called 'texhash' to regenerate the TeX database that is
used to find
such files. Otherwise, TeX does not know I've installed it. It may be

Riki

If the package is installed via the MiKTeX package manager, texhash is
run automagically.

The error message is curious (to me) in that indicates a relative path
(`../classicthesis.sty'). Was this the result of opening the
classicthesis-book.lyx example file? That file contains the following
preamble gem:

\usepackage[linedheaders=true,
    parts=true]{../classicthesis}% ,manychapters
The zip archive of the classic thesis package does contain a copy of
classicthesis.sty, in the parent folder of the examples folder, but when
LyX is compiling it in a temp directory I'm pretty sure the path will be
misinterpreted. Getting rid of "../" in the preamble should fix it, if
I'm right.

This is a LaTeX issue. There's a workaround, but it's a bit clunky. You
can insert a parbox in the table, then insert the math in the parbox.
That's easy enough, but then you have to set the width of the parbox
manually and fiddle endlessly with the vertical alignment of both the
parbox and the cell to the right of it to get things to line up
pleasingly. See the modified version attached here.

I predict you'll fix this problem in 90 minutes.

The first thing you do when reporting a problem with a LyX document is
to submit a "minimal working example" of the malfunction. In other
words, the smallest possible LyX file that displays the symptom.

The way you do that is first, archive your current file, because that's
where you'll begin after solving the problem.

Next, copy your doc to a junk file, cut that junk file in half, and see
if it displays the symptom. If not, try it with just the half you cut
out. Anyway, keep on removing approximately half the text (and also
half the stuff in the document's properties and layout file, if it has
one. You can probably get things down to a 1 paragraph document that's
less than 1K of LyX file, in which you can toggle the symptom by
deleting some of it. By that point the cause will be pretty obvious.

Once you can toggle it on and off, either you can fix it quickly, or
you can send your 1K LyX file to the mailing list and soon get an
answer. I always try to fix it myself first.

Best of luck.

Is this an error you are getting with all files, or just with one? Have
you looked at Tools> LaTeX Log to see what errors you might have gotten?
Another thing you can do is export the file to LaTeX and then run
pdflatex, etc, manually on it.

The error message you are seeing is likely misleading. There was a
change between 2.1.x and 2.2.x in how certain bibliography errors are
handled in LyX. They were previously (and wrongly) ignored. It may well
be that you are getting such errors now, and they are the actual
problem. But I can't remember the details. I'm changing the subject
header in the hopes of attracting such attention.

Note that basic.module is not one you can select via the Modules pane.
It is loaded if you have "Default (numerical)" set in Documents >
Settings > Bibliography > Citation Style. So it's not really a module
in the proper sense.

Louis, did you install LyX 2.3alpha intermediately? It could be a mix
of settings from LyX 2.2 and LyX 2.3 (where basic.module has been
dropped in favor of a cite engine).

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-time user of Lyx. It is a great piece of software. Many
thanks to the developers.

I just installed Lyx 2.2.2 and an error message is popping up: "Error
reading module basic"

I find this file on my harddrive: /usr/share/lyx/layouts/basic.module

So, I did:

sudo cp /usr/share/lyx/layouts/basic.module
/home/l/lyx/lyx-devel/lib/layouts/basic.module

to see it that would help. I then ran Reconfigure, and restarted Lyx.
But it did not help: the error still pops up every few minutes.

Is there a solution?

Louis

First question: does this happen only when you work with a document in
which the basic module is selected (in Documents > Settings... >
Modules), or does it happen with all documents?

Second question: Is read permission set on the basic.module file in
/usr/share/lyx/layouts? I would think so, else the copy should have
failed, but better safe than sorry.

If both answers are yes, my suggestion would be to delete the copy you
made in your home directory and then install a fresh copy of the module
file in /usr/share/lyx/layouts. I'm attaching the one from my system,
but be warned that I'm on 2.2.3, so you might want to check the Format
field in your existing copy of the module and make sure it's the same
(60) as in mine. Otherwise, I suppose you could download the source for
2.2.2 from the LyX server and then extract just the basic.module file.

If that doesn't fix it, let us know and we can try digging deeper.

Somewhat more seriously: it looks as if there may be non-ASCII
characters in the portion of the URL between "Google Drive" and "2016".
If so, you might want to create a shortcut to the target directory with
some simple, strictly ASCII name. How to do this depends on your
operating system.

OK. A good strategy is to read the error message and then at the very
first part you get confused (this could be the first word in some
cases), ask a specific question so that people can try to give you a
specific answer. Otherwise it is easy to get overwhelmed.

Scott, it now works for all the other documents as well.
However, this is not what one should use in the long run because
'enabledeprecatedfontcommands' itself is already deprecated and should
not be used.

This is made clear by the many warnings in the log file.

OK. A good strategy is to read the error message and then at the very
first part you get confused (this could be the first word in some
cases), ask a specific question so that people can try to give you a
specific answer. Otherwise it is easy to get overwhelmed.

Can you please try the following:
in LyX in the example document you sent which gives an error, can you
go to Document > Settings and click on the text box in "Class Options"
next to "Custom". Then put in "enabledeprecatedfontcommands". Click
"OK", and try to compile. Does it work for you?

Hi Michael,

Thanks for sending a minimal example!

This is a case (I admit they are rare) where the error is extremely
informative. Did you read it? Is there any part of it that is confusing?

Here is the error when you compile your .lyx file. I post it here
so that if you have a question you can reference the exact part
that you have a question about:

You should note that since 1994 LaTeX2e provides a new font
selection scheme called NFSS2 with several new, combinable font...
When you contact the author of the LaTeX package that is at fault,
can you please link to that bug report or keep this thread updated
confirming that you sent the maintainer a bug report (and also
subsequently when they reply?).

So presumably this is some sort of error in the covington package,
which seems to be the one we are loading.

Perhaps Jurgen knows something

Richard

Hi Scott, Richard, thanks,
of course, I did read the complete error message several times - and got
even more confused.
As a layman I basically understand that one should not use outdated
packages.

Help me, please, what else if not TL2016? It appears to me that what
happened here is just the opposite: everything worked with TL2013 and
now does NOT with TL2016?!

Furthermore: ALL my documents in question are basically identical and
ALL have in common to using the module 'linguistic' which requires
'covington.sty'. And the glosses in each are exactly the same by each
single letter!
This being the case I tried different settings in the documents with
that error - nothing changed.

So, I feel Richard may be dam...ed close to presume some sort of error
in/with the covington package.

Please recall what I said:
- all documents *without* glosses work in LyX 2.2 and all export to PDF
without problems
- some documents with glosses work in LyX as should while some generate
that error.

Was Jürgen, as the one who added so many nice features to glosses and
certainly must have tried using them, not facing "my" error?
Actually it is Jürgen's features that are so very interesting for
linguistic papers that encouraged me to go for the latest packages.
I very much hope that Jürgen who already helped me so many times will be
able to help in this case too.

Scott, if it comes to contact the authors of the LaTeX package you must
put me on the right track as I wouldn't know how to proceed with that.

Cheers!
Michael

This probably happened because you accidentally hit "Save as Document
Defaults" "Als Dokument-Voreinstellung speichern") in the document settings
dialog while the User Guide was open.

Do the following:

1. Go to your User Directory ("Benutzerverzeichnis"). About > LyX tells you
where this is.
2. Go to the subfolder "templates"
3. Remove the file "defaults.lyx"

Now check if the problem is still there.

Help someone to help you Laura.

Are you using windows or a Linux operating system?

That information would help, and what version of lyx you're trying to
work with maybe?

You must have an incomplete LaTeX installation. You need to install some
LaTeX packages like nomenclature.

You can find which LaTeX packages LyX can find on your computer with

Tools -> LaTeX Information -> LaTeX Styles and then look if you can find
nomencl.sty

Installing new latex packages depends on the system you are using (Windows,
Mac or Linux)

Good luck. We were all beginners at some point. The learning curve is at the
start a little steep but is worthwhile.

re: error creating pdf

2016-01-10 Thread Laura Schröder
Hello!

It is exactly the same error on Mac (Yosemite) and (I wanted to "test" it on my home computer after failing at work...) Windows (8).

And again after updating yesterday the Lyx on both PC, so in both cases the newest version.

And, before this error happened, I pasted some sentences out of a word document into my lyx file (but this worked before...), may this be the "reason"?

But it also failed in a test file, with just some simple words

Interestingly, I can get the handbook and all of these files as a pdf preview, but none of mine.

Thank you!

An LyX example file where this error occurs would be most helpful.

Some others seem to have run into the same problem, so it would be of
general interest to resolve it:

Hi Laura,

the preamble of your document contains these lines

%für deutsche Nomenlatur
\renewcommand{\eqdeclaration}[1]{, siehe Gleichung\nobreakspace(#1)}
\renewcommand{\pagedeclaration}[1]{, Seite\nobreakspace{}#1}
\renewcommand{\nomname}{Nomenklatur}

This is a problem if nomenclature package is not used and should be removed.
If you’ve saved this with „Als Dokument-Voreinstellung speichern“ then you
should save another version without these lines.

exceptionally well-written and contains several tutorials near the front. On

Try removing your user directory, which is at $HOME/.lyx/
