[M100] Screen Flickering?

2018-09-29 Thread Roger Mullins
Hi all-

Anything in particular I can do to fix a flickering display? It's just
started happening. It was doing it on an AC adapter so I unhooked that and
put in four fresh AAs, but it kept doing it. I did open it up and checked
the movement on the contrast knob and that seemed fine. I'm just wondering
if there's anything I can do or if I'm on my way out with yet another LCD.

Here's a short YT video of what I'm seeing.

Re: [M100] eBay M100 'Archive'?

2018-09-21 Thread Roger Mullins
Generally agreed. I was particularly amused that one of the 'formats' of
the info being sold is HTML. :-) I did once buy a set of DVDs from the site
owner of the Bombjack C64 archive, because it just made more sense to have
that material in offline form and it would have taken weeks (literally) to
download it all on my internet connection at the time. That was an entirely
different scenario, though; it came directly from the site and the money
was used to defray the cost of hosting. And as I recall it really didn't
cost much more than the cost of blank DVDs.

I'm guessing this eBayer isn't giving us an index since that would make it
too easy for a genuinely interested person to just search out the specific
material wanted.

Re: [M100] Checksum Issue w/ Teeny

FWIW Teeny.exe seemed to finish its thing just fine and DeskLink popped up
inside the cmd console window. The only indicator that anything went
haywire was that message on the M100 itself.

That said... I like the idea of running DOS that way. I've got a lot of

Ah. Well, none, I guess - short of that was just what I was used to on
Linux. I'm not in XP that often really, but had to set up a Windows
environment the other day for ham radio purposes - never could get JT-65 up

as long as I had the computer up and running I might as well try some TPDD

As to TEENY maybe avoid TEENY.EXE on modern hardware though and just inject

Is that an 'ok' approach? I thought the documentation sort of warned
people off of doing that. I'll give it a go, though. I'll look into
Laddiealpha too; haven't used it before.

[M100] Checksum Issue w/ Teeny

2017-09-22 Thread Roger Mullins
Hi all-

So... recent discussions here inspired me to put Teeny on my 'new' M100 and
DL on my Win XP laptop. I had previously used Teeny on my first M100 with
DLPlus on Linux, with no problems at all. This was my first time using the
Teeny.exe package on the PC, though, and (to my knowledge) the first time
Teeny would have been installed on this particular 100.

I downloaded the T2005.zip file with Teeny.exe from Ron's personal files
folder, and got the self-deARCing Desklink from the Club100 downloads.

When I ran through everything, though (following the instructions in the
text file, as well as letting Teeny.exe guide me through the himem stuff),
I got a message on the M100:

"Warning - Bad checksum on TEENY .CO"

So. should I try again? I just wasn't sure what would throw that
error (other than a bad checksum :-) ) and I didn't see anything in the
archives about it.

Ah. I see where you're headed with that now. I like that. Remainders
aren't verboten, though. :-) But at the same time that could be a neat
feature to incorporate especially on the 'easy' or 'medium' difficulty
setting. Regardless it's starting to look like the best thing to do might
be for the division module to have its own dedicated random number
subroutine, rather than recycling the one used in the other three parts of
the program.

Re: [M100] BASIC Integer Division Question

2017-09-20 Thread Roger Mullins
LOL it happens I guess; I'm close to that many years removed from having to
deal with most of this stuff myself.

Anyhow, I don't think I described my predicament as clearly as I should
have. My focus is less on having the computer do the math (although it has
to in order to check the answer given), and more on not presenting an
unnecessarily difficult problem to the kiddo. Here's the general idea.

1) GOSUB to send back two random integers, A and B
2) Print 'What is A divided by B?'
3) Input quotient (C)
4) Input remainder (D)
5) GOSUB to check the answers - correct if C = A\B and D=(A mod B)

What I'm trying to figure out is where to insert the test between steps 1
and 2 to make sure that the program doesn't spit out "What is 5 divided by
12" or "What is 8 divided by 0".

[M100] BASIC Integer Division Question

2017-09-20 Thread Roger Mullins
Morning all!

My daughter (she's 9) and I are working together on a program, partly for
fun and partly for the learning experience. Her teacher doesn't assign
specific homework, but asks that the students spend ten to twenty minutes
per night drilling on 'math facts.' There's no worksheet, and she
suggested parents just download worksheets from the web or make up the
problems. Well, that got old about two days into the school year, and I
realized that the M100 and BASIC would be perfect for this.

The general algorithm is:

1) Choose whether you want to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication
or division
2) Indicate how many problems you want to do
3) Choose a 'difficulty' (which determines whether you're working with
one-, two- or three-digit problems)

The program then uses a FOR loop as many times as the student indicates and
uses two INT(RND(... statements to generate two random numbers for use in
the problem. It keeps a running tally of how many questions are answered
correctly. At the end the results are displayed (number correct as well as
percentage) and can be printed out to include in the homework folder if you
want. It's nothing fancy but it gets the job done and it's been fun to
work it out. She's had a blast seeing how programs actually work.

We're stuck, though, and need advice on the division routine. For adding,
subtracting, or multiplying, the program works fine as we've written it.
I.e., the random number subroutine returns A and B, and those are then used
for the problem. It doesn't matter what the numbers are or what order
they're in.

Division is a little trickier, though. The kids aren't using decimals or
fractions yet, so it's important to divide the larger number by the
smaller. And they haven't learned how to disrupt the fabric of space/time
yet either, so I need to not divide by zero. My question, though, is where
in the logical flow of the program would be the 'best' place to handle
those exceptions. Should we compare as soon as the two random numbers come
back until A>B and B is not zero? Should we add it as a step at the end of
the random number subroutine that only executes if we're doing division?
Heck, does it need to be its own subroutine? And in whichever case, if the
A>B comparison 'fails' but neither is zero, is it better to re-run the
routine from the start or write a way to 'flip' the values?

Pretty much all those would work, we were just brainstorming the most
'efficient' way to handle it from a programming perspective. Which is
actually kind of funny if you look at the rest of the program and how many
times we repeat ourselves in the four different 'modules.' :-D

Welcome aboard Dave! This is an awesome community here with very helpful
and knowledgeable folks so you're in the right place for sure. :-) I'd like
to hear more about your packet setup once you're up and running. I
pondered trying to do something along those lines myself but there's
practically no VHF/UHF packet activity in my area. Are you planning on
working that or HF or both?

Looks like the other guys have already hit your specific questions, but as
to #5 - I think somebody already pointed you toward the 'member files' area
of Club 100 but I wanted to make sure you check out these folders in
particular:

Ron Wiesen -

Randall Shreve -

I use Ron's LOG program in my shack (if you're reading this, Ron, awesome
piece of software - thx!!!). You just can't beat it; I can haul my Linux
laptop out into the field and get maybe an hour of logging, tops, provided
I remember to dim the screen, or I can pop a fresh set of batteries in the
M100 and log contacts all day long. It's a simple matter to shoot the
log.do file back across to my 'main' PC when I get home, and I just treat
it like any delimited file (it uses the | character) to import it into
Excel.

Have fun and hope to catch you on the air someday!

'thing' as a barcode gaming scene, so I'll definitely look into that. And
I love the idea of geocaching, if only because we'd be walking around the
park with our M100's. :-)

You know (alert: rambling aside ahead), I downloaded the scanned BCR manual
and was reading it last night. What I love about our computers is the
forced economy when it comes to programming. I was never a big time
programmer by any stretch, but I remember having to really take the time to
map stuff out and try to make it as efficient as possible because memory
constraints dictated it. The inventory program that's listed in the BCR
book doesn't do a whole lot, but I couldn't help but wonder what it would
look like 'today' by the time you had to import this library over here and
incorporate that driver from over there, etc. I'm glad programming in
general has reached a much larger audience nowadays with all the IDEs and
bells and whistles and modules and stuff, but there's a minimalist beauty
in a lot of the 'old school' code that I think a lot of people miss. I've
been slowly introducing my daughters (7 and 9) to BASIC. They recognize
that it's a whole lot easier to pick up their tablet, tap something, and
play whatever high-def game they want, but it seems like they also can't
help being a little impressed when they're watching me tinker with
something and I show them the listing and they see what a few lines of code
can accomplish.

[M100] Bar Code Reader

2017-08-17 Thread Roger Mullins
Very excited - I picked up a bar code reader on eBay this morning via Buy
It Now while I was waiting for the drop-off line to clear at my kid's
school! I've been wanting one to play around with for a while now but I've
kept getting out-bid. It's just the wand itself, no software or book, so
I'm going to download the scanned manual and follow the discussion thread
here from a few weeks ago about setting it up.

I'm curious to know - any of you have one set up, using it for anything
practical? I'm looking forward just to the challenge of getting it up and
running, but I'm also brainstorming ways to actually put it to use. I
don't really have anything I need to inventory. :-)

I'm also awaiting delivery of my replacement M100 (also from eBay) as I
never got the screen/boot-up issue figured out on mine and I was worried I
would end up putting more into diagnostics than it would cost to just pick
up a 'new' machine. Plus it's always good to have an in-house supply of
parts. It should be here by the weekend.

Just wanted to add - I had my 100 sitting on the corner of my desk here
yesterday after I put the fresh batteries in it, and a coworker walked by
and said "Wow, what is that? Is that NEW?" :-D He was extremely impressed
by the full-sized 'real' keyboard on an otherwise portable unit.

Re: [M100] SOS - My M100 is Non-Responsive, Screen Contrast Works But Nothing Else

2017-07-18 Thread Roger Mullins
In honor of the late great George Romero, I'm now going to re-animate this
thread from three months ago. :-)

I finally got around to ordering a new backup battery, which I installed
last night. First of all, it had very clearly been replaced before (I'm
the second owner of my 100; got it quite a ways back from a professor who
was cleaning out his office) and whoever did it had extremely questionable
soldering skills. Matter of fact it almost looked like they used a butane
torch or something from the scorch marks on the board. One of the pads was
missing as well; I had to build it back up with solder before I could get
started. But anyways, got the old battery out and the new one in and
everything reassembled. I put the batteries back in and left it off
overnight (with the memory switch on).

I tried it this morning and I'm exactly where I was before. The LED blinks
when I switch it on, and I can use the contrast knob to make the screen all
light or all dark. But there's nothing on it. The 'beep test' of hitting
enter, 'beep', enter doesn't do anything either.

Any ideas as to next steps? I brought it with me to the office this
morning and figured I'd put four new batteries in. I ordered a wall
charger which I'm expecting Friday; I don't know if letting it charge via
that would make any difference or not. I did a quick visual inspection of
the board while I had it apart last night and everything seems to be seated
OK. The LCD is relatively new; I bought it from Rick not too long before
he passed away. And you can see that all the pixels are good when you turn
the contrast up. Plus the fact that it doesn't beep when you blindly drop
it in to BASIC... it's as though there's just nothing going on behind the
scenes.

I searched the list archive but only turned up one mention of a USB cable and
that link is broken. Is there a readily available modern replacement for the
26-3804? Thought I might go ahead and pick up a wall charger since I'm going to
be replacing the NiCd, but the used  26-3804s that I'm finding are going for
upwards of $50.

Appreciate the second pair of eyes! There's definitely a plethora of
suppliers floating around out there, and this is supposed to be one of the
more reputable ones. I've kept up with the nicd/nimh debate somewhat, but
I mainly just want to get my M100 back up and running - it's been down for

Roger,

Try:

- Power on
- Enter (goes into BASIC)
- Type: BEEP
- Hit Enter
- Listen if you hear a beep

This will tell you if the processor is running or if it is just an LCD
issue. If no beep heard, maybe needs a new NiCD battery or a good
overnight charge. Otherwise might be an LCD issue.

[M100] Hello (again) from a newly-minted ham radio operator

2017-01-12 Thread Roger Mullins
Definitely good to be back. :-) As to Jeff's question below... I've been
pondering the M100's usability for ham stuff, myself. Besides the really
cool log program that brought me back here in the first place I've also
seen some guys around the web doing some pretty cool stuff.

This guy over at the retrobattlestations subreddit hooked up an M100 to a
Kantronics TNC and used it as a terminal for packet stuff:

https://www.reddit.com/r/retrobattlestations/comments/1t4eet/trs80_model_100_packet_radio/

I'm mainly interested right now in getting up and running on PSK31. Seems
to be a lot of traffic around there. I don't know of any way you could use
a Model T for that, though, although if there are options out there I'm
definitely open to the possibility. I'm also interested in RTTY and I
think there might be ways to do that natively with a Model T, I just
haven't gotten to do the research yet. I know the C64 could do it and it
didn't even have the built in telecom features the M100 has.

As to why I'd be interested in hauling my M100 out and about for logging,
other than 'because I can,' there's the battery life angle and the fact
that my laptop would be dead within an hour in the field with no AC. There
are phone apps but I really don't like touchscreen typing. I'm wanting to
get into low-power CW (morse code) stuff, so the actual radio and antenna
won't take up much space.

I ordered the null modem cable from Monoprice that someone listed the other
day on the M100 FaceBook group and as soon as that comes I'm going to start
transferring some of the awesome stuff from the archives onto mine to see
how it holds up.

Roger / KM4WVE

PS - Sorry for not replying back sooner; I accidentally subscribed to the
digest version of the list and just got that switched so I'll actually see
messages as they come through.

[M100] Hello (again) from a newly-minted ham radio operator

2017-01-10 Thread Roger Mullins
Hi all-

I was actually a member of this list several years back, but I've sort of
neglected my M100 the last little bit (two young kiddos tend to monopolize
free time!). Anyhow, I passed my Technician and General exams a few months
ago for my amateur radio license and have been learning the ropes as an
operator. In my search for a good way to log contacts I happened across
Ron Wiesen's programs and that led me to dust off my 100 and... here I am.
Looking forward to being back in the community!
