MacGroup: Internet Issues
Hi Beth, Having the same problem with two browsers would lead me to believe that something is amiss within your Network System Preference settings. You may want to reference a Mac that is working properly and duplicate the settings (less IP address if they are static). Maybe the addition of DNS addresses would help as well. Needless to say, your common OS X maintenance procedures should be performed as well i.e. reinstall the latest updates, repair disk permissions, manually run your cron tasks and repair your directory structures. MacGroup: Speakers for PowerBook

I don't believe they will work with the PowerBook. (I've never even used them with my iMac ). Anne Cartwright Anne, I have a set of speakers I use with my G4 PowerBook that I can bring. The disclaimer follows... I have never used them in a space the size of the cafeteria at Pitt but they will be better than nothing. On Mar 18, 2004, at 6:16 PM, Marta Edie queried: If I understand you correctly, leaving the computer on all night, it will do these cron exercises without being prodded or scheduled? I don't have a MacJanitor, only the regular disk utilities that came with the Mac. Tasks scheduled with cron are done with varying frequency. There are various maintenance tasks that are run daily, weekly, or monthly. The daily tasks are scheduled for 3:15 every morning. The weekly tasks are done at 4:30 in the morning on Saturday. The monthly tasks are done at 5:30 in the morning on the first day of the month. If you have your machine turned off at these times, they do not get done. MacJanitor is a free program to make your Mac run the maintenance scripts whenever you want. There are several other programs which do the same thing. http://personalpages.tds.net/~brian_hill/macjanitor.html It's a good idea to run the maintenance scripts once in a while because they do useful things like rotating logs, clearing caches and generally removing detritus from your hard drive. | The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will | be March 23. If you get to Apple's web site, you have a flakey DNS server from your ISP. If this is the case, use a manual DNS entry. This will override the DNS number you are getting from your ISP. This should work: 198.41.0.4 192.36.148.17 Type both of these into your DNS field in the Network Preference Pane. Then reconnect to the Internet and let me know if it was successful. MacGroup: Schoun is in the news again
Our very own Schoun Regan has made the news http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/mac911/archives/2004/03/000109.php The story showed up yesterday, but I was unable to read it until today. On Mar 18, 2004, at 5:08 PM, Marta Edie asked: cron tasks -- what are they? There is a facility in Unix called cron that runs scheduled commands. Mac OS X has a built-in list of cron tasks for system maintenance. Unfortunately, they run early in the morning, when most of us are asleep. If you don't leave your machine on all night, it's a good idea to run them by hand once in a while. There are several programs that'll do this for you. MacJanitor is one that comes to mind. | The next meeting of the Louisville Computer Society will | be March 23.
