Similar, though you have to keep up on the metadata, and tagging photos,
which I assume was the same with aperture. I've used Lightroom since the
beginning, as aperture didn't rename on intake, it was another step to
rename photos.

Re: [MacGroup] Digital TV question

2014-11-03 Thread John Stone
Harry,

It depends on where you live... we got one of the fancy digital antennas,
and reception wasn't too good! And this was under the recommendation from
several friends that use the same antenna, though none leave in the same
area I live in After talking with my brother who had built a hoverman
antenna from plans he got from internet. We tried that and got more
channels but depending what the weather is and where folks are in our
place, it all seems to affect the signal!!! Not to pleased with free tv,
though not pissed off enough to go back to cable

When the weather is inclement the signal to my TV is bad. The more severe
the weather the more severe the degradation of the signal I receive, ie the
 more pixelated the signal.

Would a digital antenna mitigate this problem? Do they even make rooftop
digital antennas? I have heard about digital indoor antennas - are they any
 good?

Your comments and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Is it safe to use a wi-fi hotspot I know nothing about?

It depends on a few things:

 (1) If you need a password to get into the hotspot, it's probably pretty
secure because this usually means all the traffic is encrypted. If it's a
truly open hotspot with no password, then that means the traffic may not be
unencrypted. Either way, you can check for encryption by holding down the
option key while hitting the WiFi fan in the menu bar. If it doesn't say
something like *Security: WPA2 Personal*, then your traffic is open to
 anyone with a packet sniffer.

 (2) It also depends on what you are doing. Many sites — Gmail, Facebook,
AOL and all banks — run with encrypted sessions in your browser, If the
browser session is encrypted, then nobody can eavesdrop, even if the local
WiFi is unsafe. Look for the https lock in your browser to make sure.

I pay for a VPN service, and I always use it when I'm on public WiFi, just
in case. With a VPN connection, nobody can peek at your session. It only
costs about $15 per year, and has the added bonus of letting me watch
in-market baseball games from MLB.com and stream BBC content straight
 from London.

I don't have cable nor do I wish to get cable.

 So, any thoughts on Uverse?

 Thanks.

Switch. I advise folks to never use their isp as an email address. when
you switch providers, so does your email always use gmail, hotmail, yahoo,
or one of the other free email services, then you can switch isps to your
heart content and your email address will never change!

 Harry,

I had the same problem and solved it, sort of, using a somewhat complex
method that works pretty well once it's set up.

In brief, it works like this: I installed SpamSieve on my main computer,
which I find to be a much better spam filterer than the Junk mail option in
Apple's Mail program. Aside from being a better spam detector, SpamSieve
gives you a lot of options on how to handle your spam, including ranking it
by color according to its likelihood to be real spam — the darker the color
the better chance that's it's real spam. Once I had determined that it was
nearly (if not completely) 100% accurate down to a certain color level, I
set it up to automatically delete all messages of that color or darker
immediately. That gets rid of about 95% of my spam email immediately, and
that email does not get downloaded to my iOS devices.

Of course, the main computer has to be on and downloading email on a
regular basis (mine does every 5 minutes) for this to work. And you need to
train SpamSieve for a few weeks so that it gets good at recognizing your
 spam email.

 Dan

I can do that, and will until I figure out something different, but the
only problem with doing this is when you delete a message from one device
it is still on the others and when I delete the mail from my ipad or iphone
Bellsouth I always have 50 or so messages which I previously deleted from
the computer waiting for me on the ios devices.

On Mar 26, 2013, at 9:59 PM, John Robinson prof...@insightbb.com wrote:

I do exactly as Jonathan says, on every devise but one I have the deletion
set to a month, or whatever the max is, then on my main computer I have it
set to delete from server when downloaded. Works perfect. Not fancy, not
like the cloud, and putting up with ATT requires nerves of steel and a
 personal psychiatrist.

BellSouth has always been POP only and have no syncing, per se. But you
can adjust your settings to get the mail on both computers.

It involves adjusting the settings in your email accounts dealing with the
server. Go into Mail preferences, select the Accounts tab and then select
the BellSouth account. Click on the Advanced tab and change the settings
for Remove copy from the server after retrieving a message: to something
longer, like a week or a month.

That way when one of your devices retrieves the mail the other still has
time to get their copy before the server throws it away.

It may still not work perfectly, but this is one thing that will help.

Now that I have an iMac and a laptop I realize my bellsouth account doesn't

A friend has the same problem and was told by the good folks at

Is there a way to have the bellsouth email sync between both computers?

That was my first thought, so I could compare a bunch of cameras very
unscientifically. They don't list the Panasonic as something that they
carry. I don't know if I should interpret this as a warning about the

 http://lifehacker.com/5823096/how-to-burn-your-own-lion-install-dvd-or-flash-drive

I burned an install dvd and then did a clean install. After the install I
chose to migrate (from my time machine) settings and accounts but not
 applications.

Two observations about how Lion works.

 1) prior to Lion, when my monitor was in sleep mode I was able to run my
fingers over the track pad and the monitor would wake up. Under Lion I have
to click the bar at the bottom of the track pad.

 2) My non-apple blue tooth mouse scroll wheel operates in a reverse
manner. Before Lion I rolled the scroll wheel down to move the scroll bar
down. Now I roll the scroll wheel up.

 Curious.

 Questions:

 1) There are several Apple apps that came with my computer that did not
transfer, IDVD for example. If I just drag iIDVD from Time Machine to my
applications folder will it work properly. What about my iWork apps?

 2) Today my wife logged on to iCloud.com and added an event to our
calendar (she did this from her PC :-(
The event synced to my iPhone and my iPad but not to the calendar on my
Mac. I had to quit and reopen the calendar to get the event on the
computers calendar. Is there a way to force a sync without quitting ICal?

 That's it for now.

The question I got was there a kick back error message or did it just quit

just quit sending emails then more then likely it's an issue with Mail

So did anyone get and email back saying there was an error or email has

It sounds like a Mac Mail message as opposed to a Insight email message,
something isn't quite working properly with Mac Mail. I got that all the
time before I switched to gmail... And one of the reasons I quit using Mac
Mail!

Several folks here including the security guy, wanted to know why you
weren't using one of the free email list servers, like MailChimp? It's free

 Harry,

If it were me I would run an ethernet cable from the main router to the
back of the house and put in another wireless access point. It's easier
and more reliable from a wireless point of view, but running that cable
 might be the hard part.

If you have a basement or a crawl space that you can run the cable the
length of the house, it would be fairly easy to put a ethernet jack in
the wall next to your router, run the cable down in the wall into the
basement and then across the ceiling, floor joists, or whatever you have
in your basement, and back up to a wall plate in the back of the house
where you plug in your WAP.

Such a solution would use inexpensive parts and be the most reliable.

The feasibility equation would depend entirely on how your house is laid
out and how badly you want wireless in the back of your house.

increasingly hard to find is a real viewfinder, you know, the kind you put
your eye up to to frame and focus the shot. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned,
but I find that way of shooting much superior to the

 requires.

The G12 also has lots of manual settings you can use, a 5x optical zoom

do any serious color or exposure corrections.

If anyone else knows of a good point-and-shoot that still has a

albums, only to not find a single one now.

It may be related to the fact that I used the Aperture trial for a month
before purchasing the application. I mostly used my macbook pro for that
since I could take it easily to the Apple store. When I purchased the
application and started adding more photos, I had two somethings, maybe
libraries, that the apple folk had to merge into one. That was easy enough
to do with the smaller computer that I could take to the store. But on this

Thank for the Image Rescue suggestion. It's worth a try.

Full-screen apps don’t go full screen unless you want them to, and they
have to be written to support it. Very few programs support it now and those
are mostly Apple programs--Safari, Mail, Pages, etc. (The new version of
BBEdit has Lion full screen mode.) All program windows work as in Snow
Leopard, unless you want full screen mode.

The newer apps written for full screen use have a menu item under to View
menu to go full screen, or the key command control-splat-F.

the entry-level MacBook Air for $999. I’m sure you can still buy a MacBook,
if you go to an Apple dealer in the next few weeks. Of course, the 13-inch

as a Pro a couple of years ago without much change to its specs.

I was kind of expecting this to happen because the Air is pretty close to
what I think all laptops will be like in a few years. The price of flash
memory has come down so fast recently that it makes little sense to have
slow, fragile, bulky and power hungry spinning hard drives in portable
 devices any more.

In fact, I fully expect the laptop computer itself to be marginalized
because most people can get by just fine with nothing more than an iPad-type
 device.

*A Start-Up’s Camera Lets You Take Shots First and Focus Later*
 [image: nyt_logo_106x27.gif]

-

STEVE LOHR, On Wednesday June 22, 2011, 12:35 am EDT

With an innovative camera due out later this year from a company called
Lytro, photographers will have one less excuse for having missed that
 perfect shot.

The company’s technology allows a picture’s focus to be adjusted after it
is taken. While viewing a picture taken with a Lytro camera on a computer
screen, you can, for example, click to bring people in the foreground into
sharp relief, or switch the focus to the mountains behind them.

But is Lytro’s technology just a neat feature, or is it the next big thing
 in cameras?

The founding team of the Silicon Valley start-up and investors who have put
in $50 million are betting on the latter. The technology has won praise from
computer scientists and raves from early users of its prototype camera.

“We see technology companies all the time, but it’s rare that someone comes
along with something that is this much of a breakthrough,” said Ben
Horowitz, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, a major investor in Lytro.
 “It’s superexciting.”

Lytro’s founder and chief executive is Ren Ng, 31. His achievement, experts
say, has been to take research projects of recent years — requiring perhaps
100 digital cameras lashed to a supercomputer — and squeeze that technology
into a camera headed for the consumer market later this year.

Mr. Ng explained the concept in 2006 in his Ph.D. thesis at Stanford
University, which won the worldwide competition for the best doctoral
dissertation in computer science that year from the Association for
Computing Machinery. Since then Mr. Ng has been trying to translate the idea
into a product that can be brought to market — and building a team of people
 to do it.

The Lytro camera captures far more light data, from many angles, than is
possible with a conventional camera. It accomplishes that with a special
sensor called a microlens array, which puts the equivalent of many lenses
into a small space. “That is the heart of the breakthrough,” said Pat
Hanrahan, a Stanford professor, who was Mr. Ng’s thesis adviser but is not
 involved in Lytro.

But the wealth of raw light data comes to life only with sophisticated
software that lets a viewer switch points of focus. This allows still
photographs to be explored as never before. “They become interactive, living
pictures,” Mr. Ng said. He thinks a popular use may be families and friends
roaming through different perspectives on pictures of, say, vacations and
parties posted on Facebook (Lytro will have a Facebook app).

For a photographer, whether amateur or professional, the Lytro technology
means that the headaches of focusing a shot go away. Richard Koci Hernandez,
a photojournalist, said that when he tried out a prototype earlier this
year, he immediately recognized the potential impact.

“You just concentrate on the image and composition, but there’s no need to
worry about focus anymore,” Mr. Hernandez said. “That’s something you do
 later.”

“That was the aha! moment for me,” said Mr. Hernandez, an assistant
professor of new media at the graduate school of journalism at the
University of California, Berkeley. “This is game-changing.”

Mr. Hernandez, who is not affiliated with Lytro, was one of several
photographers who tested prototypes. His model, he said, was sheathed in a
black plastic shell, so he did not see its design. But he said it was the
size of a standard point-and-shoot camera. The picture resolution, he added,
was indistinguishable from that of his other point-and-shoots, a Canon and a
 Nikon.

Eliminating any loss of resolution in a camera like Lytro’s, which is
capturing light data from many angles, is a real advance, said Shree Nayar,
a professor at Columbia University and an expert in computer vision. Mr.
Nayar is familiar with Mr. Ng’s work, but he said he had not seen anything
Lytro has done in more than a year.

“If they have been able to recover most of the lost resolution, then their
image refocusing application is a very cool feature,” Mr. Nayar said. “But
it is an open question how popular it becomes.”

At Lytro, the view is that the technology, once it gets into people’s
hands, opens the door to many possible new features and uses. Among its
other advantages, the new camera is much faster than conventional ones
because there is no “shutter lag” — waiting for the autofocus device to work
and the shot to be taken. Those fractions of a second, of course, are often
when the dog darts off or the child’s smile becomes a frown.

I was emailing a classmate of some 49 years ago about a couple others that
were on FaceBook and so out of line. I wrote a disparaging remark about one
of them and by the time I got home my wife was lowering the boom on me for
stooping to such lows as she had been on her iPad and since the emails are
synced she saw what I was sayingUGH your sins will find you out!!

I don't know the answer to the question about apps, I didn't ask them so
I wonder how that works, i'll be anxious to see if any on the list can help
with that one. If there isn't any answer you could call Apple and I'll ask

Before iPad 2 came out, I had the earlier version and my wife I shared
it. As these things happen, she recently bought me the new iPad, and she now
 has the 'old' one.

When I set up the new one, I had the option of setting up as new, or sync
to backup of other one. I choose the backup option. Now both iPads are in
synch and mirror each other with apps, etc.

However, as we now use our own device for our own purposes, we are
finding we want them set up differently, with different apps, and folders,
 etc.

Question: can I now re-set one of them as 'new', and will I have to
repurchase the apps we both want? Or is it as simple as during sync with
iTunes, check uncheck which apps that iPad is using? I'm thinking the
device looks for the Apple iTunes account, which all of my settings and
purchases are under mine, not hers.

 Anybody in the same boat?

and internet and phone so the SD channels will be moving out.

I've heard nothing about Insight turning off the clear QAM channels. Have
you heard for sure they will be removing channels from the lower tier as
they add more HD channels? There are already some clear QAM channels in
HD—all the local channels, for example—and they've even been adding a few
 more, such as WGN.

This will likely mean all those people who got digital to analog converters
from them last month will be sol because I think those boxes only get clear
 QAM.

I know there are a few Insight employees subscribed to the list. Are you

I just purchased an iPod Touch and discovered that it won't activate or sync

to Apple's site, which I should've checked prior to purchasing the iPod,
10.5.8 is required to run the current version of iTunes that's required to
activate and sync the new iPod.

My question is, will this Mac, which has the PPC processor, run 10.5.8? I
have a 10.5.5 install disk that came with my MacBook, but it wouldn't
install on the iMac. The PowerBook has the Intel processor, so I thought
that might be the problem there.

If the iMac will run 10.5.8, can anyone tell me where I can get an install
disk, preferably one that isn't terribly expensive?

 Thanks for any help,

A reset ought to do it. In the manual setup mode of the software there's
a menu item Base StationRestore Default Settings... There's also a reset
 button. Check out http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728.

I had done a soft reset (because I didn't have the right password noted), a
hard reset and 2 Restore Default Settings yesterday. None yielded anything
 useful.

When I went to the Apple discussion boards, someone had just posted the
same list of symptoms, oddly enough all starting at roughly the same time
(noon yeseterday). He tried swapping in an older router and found the same
problems, and hence was going to bother the ISP for a new modem. I tried
unplugging the modem and router overnight, and magically, everything is
 working this morning.

I don't have a clue what is going on, but at least things are (temporarily)
 OK now.

Ed, it is amazing how many of the Braun design gadgets I own, from razors
to small alarm clocks for travelling, coffee makers, coffee grinders, you
name it. Yes, the Europeans were not enamored by those furniture pieces
from the 19th century, also needed to put things into smaller spaces. When I
redesigned my kitchen to be handicapped accessible, as well as the bedroom,
I had a wonderful firm here to do according to my wishes with the help from
German catalogues. We ordered everything, from drawer handles to low
pullout tables and built drawers to pull out from under beds.. At that time
nothing of the sort was available here. Simplicity and functionality and
beauty. Now those handles are available anywhere. Look in the doctors'
offices. And my plain doors without grooves to catch dirt and grease, that
company could not make enough kitchens in that style. Thanks ,Ed, for that
bit of info. I imported many things, from curtain rods to shower closures
which are pulled along the top of the tub, but without those bothersome
tracks that can catch soap scum and hurt your butt.

the Apple Help desk, some of the cd/dvd burners don't like certain c/dvd
brands, which could be the case in your machine It'll play but won't
burn them...

Well, my new CDs will be Verbatim, the others were Memorex. I am trying a
 different brand.

Why then do the Apple people when selling you a computer not warn you to
stick to certain brands, if that is so important.

I ultimately believe it is my blasted Macbookpro. It has been a lemon from

The QA for these disk manufactures is not very high. Apple CD/DVD drives

A different drive in Marta’s case may work with the disk just fine where
another Disk drive will not like the same disk.

When you stick a disk into a drive to play or burn the drive goes thru a
start up sequence an if all the flags are not checked then

 You get an error.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Now, I have a couple other questions... are
you importing the files direct from the camera, via the camera cable, or
inserting the memory card , and reading from that. Also, it may be the type
of JPG file the camera software creates, that the Canon camera software
creates thats not compatible with iPhoto.

The following forum link has info that refers to your issue might help
to read through it, as it shows several options to try.

iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading

I have also gotten a message specifically saying it cannot download the
 JPG files.

It has been pretty weird and frustrating! This is in the latest version
 of iPhoto.

Stuart, could you provide the error message info you are getting when
attempting to move the files, and just for clarification, is this with
iPhoto, or as the subject line hints at, with using iTunes. Also which model
Canon camera is it? I have owned several in the past.

 that
