Re: [MacGroup] iPad Pro

2019-02-09 Thread tom holloman
That was my first try as I have the extended warranty. Their suggestion was to
erase and restore as a new iPad. Not restore from backup as the problem may be
in a backup.
That seems unlikely to me and very hard to do as I would lose a lot of stuff.
Now, it’s to happen more often.
Guess I’ll chat with them again and hope for a better genius.

Tom,

That is so unusual I would go straight to Apple. Hopefully one call would fix

2018-12-12 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
Thanks Lee.
I was confusing lightning with Thunderbolt since the Thunderbolt port has what
I think is a “lightning iconl”

Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2

According to Apple my MacBook Air has these ports:
Two USB 3 ports (up to 5 Gbps)
Thunderbolt port (up to 10 Gbps)
and
MagSafe 2 power port
SDXC card slot

Apple finally started certifying third-party USB-C to Lightning adaptors a
month or so ago. None of the non-Apple adaptors on Amazon are MFI certified.
The certified cables contain tiny circuit boards to translate between the ends.
The MFI-certified cables will contain the little circuit boards purchased from
Apple.

Here’s an article
 that even
contains pictures of the circuit boards.

It gets confusing in a hurry.

I don’t think Apple has ever made a Mac supporting Lightning—only iPhones and
iPads. The MacBook Airs have Thunderbolt, not Lightning ports. There is no
compatibility between Thunderbolt and Lightning.

Before this year, the Air had a USB-A port and a Thunderbolt port supporting
USB 2 and Thunderbolt 2, respectively. The 2018 Airs have two USB-C ports both
supporting USB 3 and Thunderbolt 3.

I’ll be darn, I didn’t know any of the Mac’s had lighting. You’ll just need a
lighting to lighting cable. Leary something every day.

Air Display 3 is $9.99 but Air Display for the Mac is $19.99. Is that what you

Re: [MacGroup] iPad Pro as an external monitor on my MacBook Air

2018-12-11 Thread Chris Denny
I use Air Display on my 2nd Gen 12.9 Pro. It connects by running a cable from
my Mac to the iPad, opening the Air Display 3 on the iPad and launching Air
Display Host software from the Mac. I don’t have a reason to run it over wifi
because I use it as I edit my photos with Lightroom, Affinity Photo, Photoshop,
and other software. If you plan on using it over WiFi make sure coverage in
your home is solid and fast. I wouldn’t recommend trying to use it having one
router in a two story house and not expecting any latency to happen. The Host
software is a free download and the app runs $9.99.

In spite what you might see in the reviews, I’ll recommend it to anyone. It’s
been a solid product for me.

Re: [MacGroup] iPad Pro as an external monitor on my MacBook Air

2018-12-11 Thread John Robinson
You are right, you would go USB to Lighting. You can’t go Lighting to Lighting
since your MacBook is not lighting.

I’m guessing there is an app with Luna that communicates with the hardware. I
would also imagine there is an IOS app that communicates with the hardware but
since I’ve not purchased I’m not sure.

2018-12-11 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
John,

I’m running El Capitan. Do you think Duet will work okay with El Capitan?
Also do you install duet on the iPad? the Mac? Both?
How do you connect the iPad to the Mac? Thunderbolt to USB? Thunderbolt to
Thunderbolt? USB to USB?

I know I would need a dongle for the iPad

I’m only going to connect my iPad to my Macbook Air - no other machines..

I’ll check out Luna too.

Thanks for your help

Harry,

I’ve use the Duet on past OS’s, it worked fairly well but in corresponding with
them they continued to tell me it had flaws due to Apple not releasing some
particular code…possibly by now the software works flawlessly…

Re: [MacGroup] iPad Pro in the classroom

2016-04-10 Thread John Robinson
Jonathan,

I love you man, goodness what great timing.

The broker I use has gone to fingerprint authentication, allowing clients to
get to their accounts with the Apple fingerprint recognition. State Farm’s App
allows payments through ApplePay using fingerprint, ADT allows me entrance to
my account using fingerprint, of course Ace Hardware, PepBoys, McDonalds,
Meijer’s and on it goes…AND, if rumors are correct before the Christmas holiday
Apple will allow internet purchases on the iPhone and iPad using ApplePay
fingerprint authorization.

My iPads were several years old and JUST LAST night I purchased a unit exactly
as this student…I have just gotten it set up and will use it for all the above,
BUT I had no idea of all the other possibilities until this article.

Thanks for sharing, it’s one of the greatest benefits of this group….

John
