Dear Fellow Federationists:

As many of you know, we are engaged in a campaign to obtain access for
the blind and others with print disabilities to e-books available for
Amazon's new Kindle 2 e-book reader. The new reader, which Amazon is
working to make fully accessible to the blind, has the ability to use
text-to-speech to read these e-books aloud; but under pressure from
the Authors Guild, Amazon has announced that authors and publishers
will be allowed to disable the text-to-speech function. The National
Federation of the blind has joined with over twenty other
organizations to create the reading Rights Coalition, which has set up
an on-line petition to urge the Authors Guild and Amazon to reverse
course. Please read and sign the petition here:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/We-Want-To-Read

Please note: If you are using screen access technology, the first
three fields on the form to sign the petition may not be announced.
They are, in order: (1) a drop-down menu from which to select your
prefix (Mr., Mrs., etc.); (2) an edit field for your first name, and
(3) an edit field for your last name. the rest of the fields should
announce themselves as you tab to them. If you still have trouble
filling out the form, please send the following information to
readingrig...@nfb.org and we will be happy to sign on your behalf.
You will need to send us your name, address, e-mail address, and any
personal comments you would like to make about this issue. Thank you
so much for your participation in this critically important effort.

Sincerely:

Chris Danielsen
Director of Public Relations

P.S. Once you have signed the petition, please be sure to forward the

Re: Huge Problem with Keys

2009-04-03 Thread Dan Eickmeier

HI, in order to get the mac to boot from the cd, when you hear the
chime at startup, hold down the c key and it should boot to the
install. WHen the disc stops spinning, you can hit command f5, or
command fn f5 if you're on a laptop to bring of VO. Although really I
highly doubt that a reinstall of the os will help this keyboard
issue. I think if you were to take your machine into Apple and get
the keyboard replaced, that would be the best thing to do.

Well, I don't want to have to lug around a wireless keyboard as I

have a wireless keyboard but it's probably not Mac-compatible. I
tried installing Leopard with my mother, who is literally just getting
into computers, and despite her best efforts, we couldn't get it to
work. The Macbook would just start up with Skype and everything, even
when I put the disk in as it turned on. She and I heard it ask if we
wanted to install only the bundled software but of course, that's not
what I wanted. It was tricky trying to get her to open things cause
she's so new at this and not learning on a Mac and we couldn't figure
out how to get the cd to start on it's own so we just gave up.
Tomorrow, I'm having another sighted friend come over here. He's
slightly better than Mom at the computer so maybe, we can figure it
out. What am I missing? I thought the Leopard installation was
supposed to be accessible? If it really is the keyboard, maybe I'll
just have him delete my documents and other personal information and
then hsend it to Apple.

Am just eying my little netbook...
And still... as cute and geeky as it would be to have the timid kitten

Yes reading longer docs would be a pain with espeak but the

Lets face it girls apple makes a cool os for the most parts and wait

Good evening,

I haven't followed this entire thread. But, you may wish to look up

from selling clone computers with retail versions of Leopard

just for the record... keep in mind that. The law never mind if you

Not really it is alittle like buying a chevy and laying an lycomming

I mean... why not go out getting a netbook and be legal and lay

It would even be able to speak greek outta the box.

if you don't remember setting one up then just press enter and see if
that works, otherwise if you have time machine i would reinstall mac
OS and then use time machine to back everything up.

Re: Installing Leopard on a Netbook

Wow, lots of questions, here goes:
I went on Google and typed in "install leopard netbook" without the
quotes. the first site in the results is the one to which I'm
referring. I'm wondering if anyone has done this or if you think it
would be successful/easy for me to do. Let's keep it hypothetical to
avoid legal drama. Keep in mind that I don't have any experience with
terminal or partitioning etc and the first parts of the installation
probably wouldn't use sound, since the author said he installed that
driver later. I would be relying on sighted assistance from someone
who's not too technically-oriented but who can follow instructions if
they're clear. The first site made sense but one of the links on it
got very technical so my head is spinning. The one thing I doubt I
need to worry about is resolution since I can't see it anyway.
Follow the instructions and you should be fine; just make sure that
someones done it on the aspire before you get one so you can be sure
it workss - partitions can get very messed up very quickly but again,
follow the instructions; personally I think that partitioning is
pretty obvious but meh, each to there own - you won't kill anything so
give it a go.

I have the installation disks that came with my Macbook so I'm assuming
that's Leopard? What's the difference, tech-wise, between that and
the other version they mentioned on the site?
The one that i'm guessing they mensioned is a modified version of
leopard - ie: not the disks that came with your mb. You would have to
learn how to use bit torrent, download and then burn the os they are
speaking about and do it like that.
Can it work on any netbook with similar specs?
no! as I said ^, don't be the first to try it, be sure someones done it before.
Does it still have VoiceOver on it?
yes, talking install might not work; on some netbooks the headphone
port or the speakers might not work.
what would I need to do differently if I used my copy, cause he still
talked about using a modified version, even though he chose a licensed
copy.
He's being sneaky to try and avoid a few grey airias of the apple
licencing agreement. He's not actually using original leopard disks;
he's using the hacked version and purchasing a leopard licence for
that hacked version; in other words, he's using a hacked version,
going out and buying a set of leopard disks and then not putting the
lajit disks anywhere nere his netbook.
Now say I got an Acer - Aspire One Netbook with Intel® Atom™ Processor
N270 (either with the 120 or 160 gb hard drive and the six-cell
battery, unless there's a better one under 9 inches and under $350
tops out there). Would I need to get special drivers for the netbook?
Perhaps, but if its been done before then that shouldn't be a problem.
I have an external cd/dvd rom drive and am wondering if I could just
hook it up to the usb port on the netbook or would I need to get a
drive specifically for that brand? It did work on my desktop without
me installing any drivers, so I don't see why not.
Yes, should work fine in osx, windows or what ever you want to put on it.
What did he mean when he talked about having to get a wireless card.
The Acer would
one built-in and I have broadband from Verizon. Would I still need to
get a special card or would it recognise my connection like the Mac

No, in that case, it wouldn't be able to use your wireless, you'd
either have to get a different card or not use wireless at all. Unless
I am mistakened, the only cards that work in this situation are mini
pci ones, so you'd have to open your new pet up and void its worranty.
I'd still do it; sounds like it could be fun.

Justin it all Leopard install DVDs regardless of whether you purchased
it or if it came with your machine will have this capability. Actually
the DVD you get with your machine is the same if you were to purchase
it separately minus the iLife suite and any of the other trial or demo
software, which I can't even remember at this point. :)

Re: Software Update Problems - Please help

2009-04-03 Thread Justin Harford

Hello

If it happens that you wrote a password and forgot it, you might just
be able to rewrite it.

OK someone else should comment on this too. So I know if you have the
leopard installation CD there is a way to boot into the system through
the disk and change the password.

Put CD in computer
Cmd option C to open computer view in finder, go under the CD drive,
start the app file, should say something like " install os x.app"
It prompts you to restart the computer and you say yes
The computer restarts, you hear the apple boot up chord, and the cd
spins around for a while. When it stops spinning, press cmd f5 and VO
should come on.
Go to the utilities menu VO M
under that there should be something like "password utility" or
"change password" etc
Open that and it gives you a dialog where you can enter in a new admin
password without knowing the old one.

I'm not entirely sure if your restoration CD that came with your
computer would have this though I would imagine so.

Regards

Re: Software Update Problems - Please help

2009-04-03 Thread patrickneazer
Hello Randi and all:

There might be a chance that no password at all was set in the
beginning. When prompted, try simply pressing return and see what
happens. I cannot make any promises though that is what happened to me
when I purchased my last Mac mini. It was previously owned by someone
else and I was prompted with the password. Not knowing it I summoned
the Mac store where I bought it. They suggested enter and poof ...
success.

Good luck.

I realize that, but I don't remember if I set up a password, therefore
I don't know the password. I'll try hitting enter next time though I
think when I selected the restart it asked for the passwrod.

The second part of my question was, is there a place to look up the
password if I did set one?

I've only been a Mac user for a few months, and was so excited the
night I brought it home that I don't remember setting up a password.

Re: Huge Problem with Keys

2009-04-03 Thread Tiffany D

Well, I don't want to have to lug around a wireless keyboard as I
prefer everything built-in. But for testing, it can't be that bad. I
have a wireless keyboard but it's probably not Mac-compatible. I
tried installing Leopard with my mother, who is literally just getting
into computers, and despite her best efforts, we couldn't get it to

Re: Huge Problem with Keys

2009-04-03 Thread Fonzie

Hi Tiffany.

I hope your doing well.

Sorry to hear about your keys. The best thing to do would probably be
to call Apple, or head into your local store, and have it checked out.

As far as keys go. I take it the keys are for one license machine?
In any case, you should be fine. With my experience, I wanted to see
the installation of Leopard myself, so I wiped my mac clean with a new
install, and just simply reinstalled the programs I had licensed, such
as Audio HiJack, and Amadeus Pro, and I was on my way to using my
computer again. I do not think you will have any problems with
registering your products again. The serial you will be using for
your copy of leopard is the same, so there should not be any trouble.

Unless, your serials are different, than I suppose you could run into
trouble. I do not believe so though. Just setup your mac as you did
before, with the credentials you gave before, if you would feel safer.

In any case, just make sure you have your information regarding the
products you want to register. The only one I am unsure of is InfoVox
IVox.

I am sure someone will jump in about that when they can. If it is
just a general serial, then you should be fine.

I hope this helps.

2009-04-03 Thread Greg Kearney

Not yet we need to find someone who knows Kurdish Braille to make a
table for us.

Re: Huge Problem with Keys

2009-04-03 Thread Scott Howell

Mark, I agree that testing with another keyboard is the first step if
this has not been done. It may be that replacing the keyboard on the
laptop might not be to expensive. Certainly worth asking the local
Apple store about.

Re: VO and Toast Titanium or others...

2009-04-03 Thread Scott Howell

Yes, Toast since version 7.01, which is what I had tried initially was
not at all friendly to use. Simply Burns is one choice and Dragon Burn
is a second choice and it does cost you money, but is a very good
program as well.

Re: Huge Problem with Keys

2009-04-03 Thread Mark Baxter

It sounds like a keyboard issue and not an OS issue. Why reinstall at
all, why not just get a new keyboard, or use a USB keyboard?
