Re: GoogleTalk and Voice Over
Hello Sarai, Thank you for commenting on my post. I have downloaded Adium and have tried to add a friend who uses GoogleTalk to my contacts. Whenever both of us are online, we try to make communication through GoogleTalk happen. The problem that I am currently having is that Voice Over tells me that he is in my table of contacts, but that the table is dimmed. Furthermore, although I can find the button that would allow me to authorize him as a contact, nothing happens when I use Voice Over to activate the button. Is there some trick or work-around that you would know of to enable me to authorize his contact request? Re: Document navigation issues in pages and text edit
Control up and down somehow doesn't work for me since it only reads one line of the paragraph i jump to. The key combination that did allow me to read by paragraph and jump back and forward between paragraphs with ease was shift-VO-FN plus up or down arrow. This really makes navigating in pages much easier for me. It is a bit hard to press all those keys, so it is worth defining another key combination for it. Ian Robinson wrote: Hi Max, You should find that Option-Cursor up/down moves by paragraph and FN-Option-Cursor up/down moves by one screen. If you want to navigate by a whole page in Pages, go to the View Menu, choose Zoom and then choose Fit Page. Now, pressing FN-Option-Cursor up/down will move to the next or previous page. HTH. Hello Ezzie, Here's the method I use. Command-L will put you in the address bar and automatically select the current URL in it. Depending on your verbosity settings, VO might announce, Open Location and might read the URL aloud. Command-C will copy that URL. Again, VO might announce Copy depending on your verbosity settings. Command-V will paste the URL wherever you choose. How to force your Mac to update its malware definitions - Mac software - Macworld UK
http://www.macworld.co.uk/macsoftware/news/index.cfm?newsid=3283838olo=rss Fri, 03 Jun 2011 How to force your Mac to update its malware definitions Malware-fearing Mac users have been able to breathe easier since Apple released Security Update 2011-003 earlier this week. The key elements of the Security Update were that it successfully detected and removed a couple variants of the Mac Defender Trojan horse, and also added a daily check for new malware definitions. Not even 24 hours later, some malicious folks released a new version of the Mac Defender Trojan horse into the wild--a variant that Apple's initial update couldn't detect. The antivirus folk refer to the new incarnation as the C variant. If you haven't yet installed that Security Update and do so now, you'll automatically get Apple's up-to-date security definitions, which include the new C variant of Mac Defender. But if you--like me--installed the update back on May 31 then your definitions might still be out of date. Even if you leave the new Security preference to Automatically update safe downloads list checked, your Mac might not have run that check itself yet. And if you--again, like me--would prefer that your Mac go grab the latest definitions right this second, it can be done. First, check to see whether you're already up to date or not. Launch Terminal, and paste this command: more /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.plist What do you see? At this writing, some folks (with the old definitions) will see (among some other data) a last modification date listed as Thu, 26 May 2011 02:24:41. (If you see any later date, you're more current than this tutorial, but the instructions below will still help ensure that you have the latest malware definitions.) Now, to force your Mac to update, follow these steps: 1. Launch System Preferences 2. Go to the Security preference pane 3. Uncheck the Automatically update safe downloads list box 4. Re-check that box. Ta-da! Now, if all goes well, and you re-run that Terminal command from above, you'll see that the timestamp has changed. As of this writing, the last modification date should be Wed, 01 Jun 2011 21:19:15 GMT. You needn't run this command every day; your Mac should automatically update that list as long as you leave the checkbox checked. But if you want to make sure you're current because you've heard about new, unpleasant malware on the loose that might harm your Mac, now you know how to force an update. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. A New List Moderator Who Is Making A Joyful Noise
Hello Everyone, My name is Mark Taylor. Some of you may know me from my work on the Candle Shore BLOG. I am delighted to inform you that Cara, the proverbial matriarch of this list community has made me a list moderator. Cara and I have worked together on many projects during the past 5 years or so and we share the same vision for the environments in which we participate; said vision based on the premise that all questions are welcome. Support communities such as this one are crucial to the continued enrichment of our lives as we embrace some of the world's most amazing technologies that serve to level the proverbial playing field between us and our sighted counterparts and I, for one, want this playing field to remain a joyful place; not one in which we, as list members, take timid steps but, rather, one in which we make bold strides. Generally speaking, I operate from a position of yes and yes we can so if there is a way I can make your experience in this community more pleasant, please do not hesitate to let me know. As this is a high traffic list, it is easy to become overwhelmed. However, there are ways to reduce the amount of Inbox Fatigue such as switching your list membership to Digest mode or exploring new ways to skim through your Inbox. In episode 59 of the Candle Shore Podcast (18 minutes) I demonstrate how I use the Apple Mail client on my MacBook (with Snow Leopard) to quickly skim through hundreds and hundreds of messages in a matter of minutes. RE: windows and VFfution?
Hello Doug. Your experience is quite normal. Generally speaking, you will find that Windows does run a little slower under VM Ware Fusion than it does were you running it via Boot Camp. There are ways to improve this, however. Consider assigning more RAM to the virtual machine. As it has been quite some time since last I worked with Fusion, I cannot provide the steps to do this but perhaps someone else on the list can provide the steps. Mark. Setting up the Prizmo OCR app on the iPhone [was Re: Prizmo rides again!]
Hi Rose, Krister, Jenifer, Holly, Sandy, and others, I'm cc'ing this response to the macvisionaries list because these questions are likely to come up again, and in the long run, the ability to quickly reference this post in the Mail Archives will cut down on list traffic. First of all, I'll preface this by stating that the Prizmo scanning and OCR app for the iPhone, normally priced at $9.99, is on sale this week for $2.99, as posted in the App Deals section of the AppleVis web site. The price has never been this low since the app was introduced late last summer, and I doubt that you will find it available at such a low price again any time soon. This is the one OCR app for which a number of viphone list members have reported success, and probably the only one I would recommend, even at the regular price of $9.99. International list members might want to know that Prizmo supports OCR in 10 languages. I think Sandy's done a great job of explaining the app (her post appended below this one), but since there still seem to be questions about the layout of the Prizmo screen, I'll try to give a slightly different description. One of the features that contributes to Prizmo's increased effectiveness for visually impaired users is the ability to take pictures with speech control, by saying, Take Picture, which reduces the likelihood of a blurred image due to moving the phone when you double or split tap a button to take a picture. You turn this feature on in the Settings menu by double tapping the Settings button in the top right corner of the main Prizmo screen. Flick right to the General Settings button under the Settings heading and double tap. On the General Settings screen, flick right past the Capture heading and set the Alignment Grid to Switch button, off, then set the Speech Control to Switch button, on. I believe both switches are turned on by default, but it is several months since I configured Prizmo. I'm not sure whether turning off the Alignment Grid is necessary, but you certainly don't need it to be displayed, since you can't see it while using the camera. Once you have checked that these settings are in place, double tap the Settings, back button in the top left corner to return to the Settings screen, then double tap the Done button in the top right corner to return to the main Prizmo screen. The main Prizmo screen has a list of types of documents to scan and OCR, followed by a Documents button at the bottom of the screen that are results you want to store in the app. In general, you will choose to double tap Text (the first listed entry). The app works in 3 stages, which are indicated by the 3 buttons at the bottom of the the next (Photo) screen: (1) Source (obtaining the image using the Camera -- can also use previous images from your photo album taken outside the app), (2) Image (options to apply corrections to image before OCR -- generally requires vision to perform actions, such as cropping to only include the part of the image that contains text or correct for distorted pictures because you didn't hold the iPhone flat), and (3) OCR (perform the OCR with an option to choose the language to improve the OCR), then display the results for editing, copying, etc. or saving in the app's stored Documents. You can navigate through the app without ever using these buttons, just by double tapping the Next button in the top right corner of the screen to move through each stage, and that's probably the easiest way to use the app when you get started, especially if you only work with documents in English. However, if you want to OCR a document in a different language, you can improve your results by double tapping the OCR button (third or three at the bottom right corner of the screen) and then flicking left to the language button (e.g., English) in the row of option buttons for that screen, and double tapping. You'll be able to double tap another language from the list of 10 available languages. (Note that you will not hear selected announced beside the currently selected language in the list, but you can only exit the Language menu by either double tapping a new language selection or by double tapping the Cancel button in the top right corner. Once you have changed the language (e.g., to French) and returned to the Photo screen with the OCR button set, you should hear the new language, French, announced if you flick left to that button.) Setting the OCR language before applying the next button improves the recognition of words with accented characters -- otherwise I may get a 6 for an e with acute accent, and other such examples. Here's the sequence for the iPhone 4, assuming that you have configured the Settings menu as outlined earlier. It is very helpful to use the $0.99 Light Detector app to check lighting conditions and also get a sense of the optimal centering and height of the iPhone above the page before you
