Re: Need Recommendation: Office,, Calendar, and Virtual Machine

2011-08-18 Thread Chris Blouch
Vmware or VirtualBox would be your best choices as Parallels is not
accessible. VMWare seems to be the favorite while VirtualBox has a
command-line interface that lets you navigate any winky things that
aren't going well in the GUI. For the least hassle it seems VMWare is
the winner and is what you'll find the most discussion of on this list.
I don't recall anyone recently asking about VirtualBox although I know
some folks like it, especially the price.

I'm still not satisfied with office-type apps on the Mac since the
800-pound gorilla of MS Office refuses to hook into voiceover. Buried in
the MS Office Mac VPAT

are these nice little caveats

Criteria:
(a) At least one mode of operation and information retrieval that does
not require user vision shall be provided, or support for Assistive
Technology used by people who are blind or visually impaired shall be
provided.

*Unsupported*
Microsoft Office v. X for Mac does not support 3^rd party assistive
screen readers.

(d) Sufficient information about a user interface element including the
identity, operation and state of the element shall be available to
Assistive Technology. When an image represents a program element, the
information conveyed by the image must also be available in text.

*Not supported*

Microsoft Office v. X for Mac does not meet these criteria.Microsoft
Office v. X for Mac does not support assistive screen-readers.

(c) A well-defined on-screen indication of the current focus shall be
provided that moves among interactive interface elements as the input
focus changes. The focus shall be programmatically exposed so that
Assistive Technology can track focus and focus changes.

*Not supported*

Microsoft Office v. X for Mac does not support 3^rd party assistive

OpenOffice or iWorks are pretty much the main alternatives but are
imperfect in a number of ways, but generally not enough to warrant
running a VM and Windows and Jaws/NVDA.

While I don't use it, many people seem to like the iCal app that comes
with OSX. This article details getting iCal, Oracle Cal, Google Cal and
your iPhone calendar all to sync. I'm sure a little googling would turn
up more:

Re: google chrome

2011-08-18 Thread Shen
Hi,
The problem with edit boxes is that VoiceOver does not read what you typed.
Basically, text is being typed into the box. VoiceOver just doesn't read it.
For example, google.com. If you type something in the search field, you cannot
back space or arrows. But if you VO away then back, you will hear it.
Then there is amazon.com. No matter what you do, you will not be able to get
VoiceOver to tell you what you typed in the search field. But the text is there
and pressing vo-space on the Go button will not work, you need to press enter
in the text field.
Complicated? Yes. Need improvement? Definitely.

Re: first-time user: a bunch of basic questions

2011-08-18 Thread Mike Arrigo
Based on your questions, I do think you're comparing voiceover and the mac to
windows too much, and this may cause you problems. While there are some
similarities, the mac has its own way of doing things. For instance, on the
web, you mainly move element by element, it doesn't navigate line by line the
way windows screen readers do. You can still read an entire page by pressing
control option a. The main place you find shortcut keys are in menus. They
usually don't appear in dialog boxes. The more you use it, the easier it should
become for you.

Re: Carbon copy versus time machine

2011-08-18 Thread Mike Arrigo
You could make another backup to an image file and store that some place,
though you're probably fine with keeping 1 backup around. The difference
between the mac and windows is, should you need to restore your system with a
mac, you can do it totally without sighted help. There was never a way to do
that with windows that I know of.

Logitech usb multy function sterrio headsets

2011-08-18 Thread Johnny Angel!
Hi all,

I have been using a small mono bluetooth earpiece and i do like it. Someday I
would like to invest in a stereo et. But I found this Logitech headset and mic
I had from when I took an online class. Is there a way to use this headset? I
tried hooking it up with my MBP, but I kept getting a bluetooth error even
though my bluetooth earpiece is shut off. Any ideas?

Re: speaking of keyboards and the macbook pro...

2011-08-18 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Actually, it really doesn't matter which order you do it in. I would usually
do the latter though as I'd let the MBP start up with its own stuff then attach
the USB device after the fact. As a matter of interest, they'll both work at
the same time also, so, you could pretend you were playing the organ and have
one hand on each.

Good luck.

help with Apple Mail

2011-08-18 Thread Alex Hall

Hello again all,
I have gotten my gMail account working (via imap) in Apple mail.
I stumbled across the cmd-1 for inbox, 2 for sent, and 3 for
notes by accident. I can view messages well enough, but I have a
few questions (shocking, I know).

1. In my inbox, it says there are some unread messages, yet my
messages table is empty. What is going on here?

2. Can I assign cmd-4, 5, and so on to other mailboxes, and
re-assign 1-3? I did not see this in preferences.

3. On my iPod, I was somehow able to get my gMail addresses onto
the iPod's contact list app. Can I do that with the Mac? I have
hundreds of addresses and would rather have them all and weed
some out than have to start all over again. Ideally, this would
act like IMAP for mail, syncing changes made on the server or the
mac, but I am not sure if that is even possible.

Thanks in advance!

Have a great day,

Re: clock with hotkey

2011-08-18 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi Craig and Alex!
You might find that the problem is the way the actual applescript to tell the
time is written!
I've not done anything with scripts myself and would not know how to change
that one!
But if you are already good with scripts you might be able to or write one that
does what you want!
I'm only guessing about this but someone else asked about the very same thing
quite a while ago!
And I think they also had changed there clock to 24 hour but the script said it
in 12 hour mode!
So that's why I suggest looking at the script!
There is a place that keeps the scripts in one of the library's!

Yes it will, but I was hoping for it to jump to the first one on the
page. I suppose this isn't too big a deal, though, as this was only
every really useful on gMail pages and I can now imap into gmail with
apple mail. Still, it would be nice.

I am discovering this. Another lister mentioned toggling off quick nav
and arrowing that way, which I will have to play with. Hopefully this
turns out to be a case of a windows muscle memory getting in the way,
and not a true annoyance. The lister also mentioned read mode, I think
it was cmd-shift-r. I will have to look into this.

I did it, and it was rather easy. I always like to keep everything in
my own folders and not let apps, like iTunes or wordprocessors, manage
them for me. I assume this is where I create said folders?

thinking of returning to previous version of Skype

Hi,

I am giving serious consideration to returning to the other version of Skype.
The reason? The codec in this version sounds to me to be quite a step back
from the prior version. When I used the Skype call test feature, I didn't
sound nice and crisp to myself; and, another person with whom I was speaking
this morning also informed me that I did not sound as good. I'm using the same

Anybody else notice this pathetically obvious degradation in sound quality?
It's not a question of Lion either; so says my own experience.

No you can just turn off quicknav [left and right arrows together] then you can

And the same command to put quicknav back on!

Re: first-time user: a bunch of basic questions

2011-08-18 Thread Jessica and Goldina
hi Alex!

welcome to the wonderful world of Mac! I'm sure you'll love it once you get
everything figured out. I'll try to answer as many of your questions as I can
and hopefully the other listers will chime in on the rest.

2. html content areas. I don't believe the single key navigation wraps. if
you're on the last form field on the page it will just leave you there and say
no more elements found. however, if you press shift+f, for example, it'll take
you to the form field above it.

It is best to use the left and right arrow keys when browsing websites if
you're not looking for any particular element. Yu mentioned finding an article
and getting past all the social networking frame and stuff at the beginning.
when you find the heading that contains the article, use the right arrow key to
get past all the other stuff. on Mac, the left and right arrow keys are equal
to using the up and down arrows to navigate through a website. you can also use
VO find with VO f if you know the first few words of the article. but left and
right arrows navigate through the page similar to how you do on windows.

3. the finder can be a tricky thing at first. In Lion, and you would be using
Lion since you mentioned single key navigation, the finder defaults to all
files. This is a view where it shows you all your files. I haven't wrapped my
head around how to use it yet so I changed my finder back to how it was in Snow
Leopard. You can do this by:
A. go to the finder and open a new finder window by pressing cmd+n
B. go to finder preferences by pressing cmd+comma.
C. right arrow over until you hear: new finder windows show…
D. right arrow over again and you will probably hear all files pop up button.
E. VO space on the pop up button to open it.
F. VO down arrow until you hear your name. this is your home folder.
G. VO space when you find your name and this will close the pop up button and
change the selection from all files to your home folder.
H. close finder preferences with cmd+w.
I. close the finder with cmd+w
J. open the finder again with cmd+n. it will probably default to showing as
icon view. To be safe, change the view to column view with cmd+3. VO will say
"as columns checked."

It looks way more complicated written out than it actually is. trust me. Your
home folder is where your desktop, documents, downloads folder etc are stored.
When you have it set to column view, it's similar to how it was in windows
explorer, at least I found it was. If you want your documents for example, all
you have to do is interact with the file browser VO+shift+down arrow and VO
down arrow til you hear documents. use VO right arrow to open documents and VO
down arrow to look through its contents. VO left arrow closes it and takes you
back to your home folder. I found this the easiest way to browse the finder.

Apart from the file browser, there is a side bar in the finder. You can get to
it by VO left arrowing when you're not interacting with the file browser. The
side bar is where you can see other computers on your network, other drives you
have hooked up to your computer etc.

Spotlight is a universal find feature. If you're not sure where exactly a file
is stored on your computer, you can search for it in spotlight. Finder is where
everything is stored and organized and spotlight is a quick way of finding
things if you're not sure where they are.

4. the left hand menu bar or second layer menu bar is like the system tray in
windows, yes. you activate it by pressing VO m twice quickly and then VO
arrowing through its contents.

5. VO should start when your system starts as long as you don't turn it off
before shutting down. If it doesn't I'd say maybe wait five minutes? just a
really basic estimate though. But as long as you keep it on when you shut your
computer down, it should come on when your computer starts up.

6. Voiceover can read the time and day by using the keyboard commander. You
mentioned it already, maybe go into voiceover preferences/general and make sure
"allow voiceover to be controlled by Apple scripts" is checked? strange that it
would be using the system voice.

7. from the dock, or launcher as you called it, downloads, documents and
applications don't open as they normally would. To open downloads for example,
use VO+shift+m to bring up the contextual menu. VO down arrow until you hear
"open downloads." VO space on open downloads. You will be then placed in a new
finder window with downloads selected. interact with the file browser and VO
right arrow to open the folder. documents and applications are also opened from
the dock this way.

Further down in your list of questions you asked about using the contextual
menu and removing things from the dock. I'll cover those right now since we're
on the topic of the contextual menu. Like I mentioned before, you bring it up
with VO+shift+m . Let's pretend you wanted to remove iPhoto from your dock. go

Re: How Do I Check Missed Events In Skype

2011-08-18 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
You can set notifications so that a message will be sent to your E-mail telling
you of a missed call, but not of missed chats. For that, you go to the first
unmarked table in Skype, underneath the tool bar, and interact with it; VO down
until you hear "recent." Anything under that and before "History," is your
missed events or actions.

Re: Using Course Smart e-books

2011-08-18 Thread Kevin Chao
For past 10 months, I have been using CourseSmart on OS X, Windows,
and iOS for past year with VoiceOver and NVDA; it's been an excellent
experience.

CourseSmart Reader is a cloud reader with HTML5 offline access
capabilities. It will work with OS X VoiceOver Webkit, Safari, and
Lightning web browsers.

CourseSmart has been working closely with Ann Taylor from the National
Federation of the Blind Jernigan center and there have been lots of
progress in improving accessibility.

STEPP did give presentations at NFB and ACB, with overview,
demonstrations, and Q&A.

For more information on mainstream, universally accessible eTextbooks,
which can be accessed anywhere, and anytime, please visit:

How Do I Check Missed Events In Skype

2011-08-18 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey all. How do I view missed events in Skype? Everytime I want to quit Skype
or I shut down my computer I get a message saying that all calls and stuff will
be lost. I recently blocked a contact from my list and I'm thinking that it's
from this person. Do I have to add her again in order to check the missed event?

Re: VMware fusion and JAWS

2011-08-18 Thread Simon Cavendish
Hello,

I've been trying to follow your very helpful instructions to remap an insert
key in Windows running in VMWare fusion so that I can use it as Jaws key. You
suggest choosing right option key to become the insert key. However, I do not
see an right option key choice in the list, just option key. And when I
remapped it to insert key, I couldn't then use it as a regular Alt key to open
menus in Windows and Windows applications. If this topic is not appropriate for
the list, if you kindly wish to continue with it, please e-mail off list.

With best wishes

Re: Remote cd/dvd setup with Lion?

2011-08-18 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I think you have it backwards.

That setting is to share the optical drive of your Mac with another computer.
I guess since your mini has no optical drive, this option isn't available. You
will have to try to set it up with the computer that has the optical drive.

Re: that old mac mini keyboard problem is still with me.

2011-08-18 Thread james Walton
to do this, you will need to do this,
1. ofcourse backup your data!
2. restart your mac mini, and when the sound plays, hold down command r, i
recommend holding that down for about 10 seconds
this will start recovery mode, what it will do here is download the recovery
image from apple's servers, this can take some time, it took my mac i think
like 5 minutes.
if you have your mac connected to a ethernet connection this will be simpler.
this will make sure you load internet recovery.
if you are on wifi, i can't explain how to do it because i don't use wifi
once this loads, you will need to erase the partition that your mac is
installed on by using disk utility.
once you have done this close disk utility

go to reinstall mac os 10
this part will take about 2 hours or more depending on your internet connection
speed.
what it is doing here, is downloading the image, then it will restart, install
mac os 10 and restart again in to the setup screen you get when you first
received your mac.
contact me off list
if you want more help so we don't clutter the list up.

first-time user: a bunch of basic questions

2011-08-18 Thread Alex Hall
Hello all,
I was on here a few months ago asking some basic questions about vo.
Now, I am proud to say, I have a Mac Mini sitting on the desk all
shiny and new from Best Buy as of two nights ago. I can get around
the basics, like system or vo settings, and I can do things like
checking for updates, but beyond that I am stuck. Here, in no
particular order, is my list of questions. Rest assured, more will be
coming!

1. It seems that dialogs have access keys (on Windows, one might
press alt-a to activate the "add" button, for instance), since I found
that pressing s within the shutdown dialog will make the computer
sleep. However, vo will not read these keys, if they exist at all, so
I never know what letter will activate a button. I have found the
option to use cmd+letter to move to elements starting with that
letter, but that is not the same thing since developers can assign any
letter to be the access key.

2. I have trouble with html content (web pages, the App Store, and so
on). I can get around by arrowing from one element to another or by
using the rotor, but I cannot figure out the following:
a. I have enabled single-key navigation on webpages, but nothing
wraps. For instance, if I am below a search edit which is the page's
only input field and I press f, I am told "text field not found"
instead of being taken to the field above me (at the top of the page).
b. How can I just read the page? With jaws on Windows, I can arrow up
and down on the page to read it like a document, which is great if I
don't know what the page looks like or do not have a destination in
mind. Arrowing in vo, though, seems impossible. Am I to read pages
element by element only? If I go to a heading which is, say, an
article title, how can I just arrow down to see what the article is,
instead of reading the page from my current position? This is useful
if there is a by line, a social network sharing frame, or other
content after the heading but before the article.

3. How do I use the Finder? I have no idea what it is doing, and only
found a file I was looking for by accident. Should I use Spotlight
instead? What is the difference? Is there a third-party file and
folder manager that people recommend?

4. From what I can gather, the left-hand menu is kind of like the
system tray in Windows, with network information, sound, bluetooth,
and the like. How do I access it?

5. When the mac starts, vo does not. I have to hit cmd-f5 to run it
each time, and I am not sure how long to wait (I think I could wait a
lot less time than I am). How can I fix this? I am running a usb
keyboard, no mouse, and no monitor at the moment.

6. Can vo announce the time and date like most other screen readers?
This is not a big deal to me, but it would be nice sometimes. I have
enabled the keyboard commander, but the speech used is not my vo
speech, but rather the system speech, and there is quite a delay
between the keypress and the speaking.

7. Why is it that, when I go into the launcher and try to open my
downloads folder, nothing happens? It should have two files in it, so
I know it is not empty. I am pressing enter, space, vo-space, the up
and down arrows (quick nav is on), but nothing happens.

8. Nothing ever goes onto the desktop. I am not sure how to use it
or what good it is, since everything goes to the dock/launcher. I was
listening to a podcast last night, and the host had somehow set things
up so that his desktop had his home folder opened on it. How do I
manage my desktop, and how is it different from the dock?

9. Safari: aside from the html questions, how do I do things like
view bookmarks, sort bookmarks into folders, view open tabs, switch
between tabs, and so on? Will vo work with Firefox? Might I be better
off using that over Safari?

10. How do I get to things I download so I can open them? I have so
far downloaded two programs, but I am not sure how to run either one
of them. I think I ran one, but I'm not sure, and now I can't get the
other to work at all.

11. Is there a way to read daisy, for free, using Alex? I know
Bookshare has a program, but I don't want the voices it comes with, I
just want to use Alex to read bookshare and other content.

12. I see that there are some scripts in the keyboard commander. How
do I view these scripts or assign my own? I am not asking for
programming help, but rather for help on how to view the contents with
a mac or tell vo where to find scripts I may make in the future.

13. I am thinking about a trackpad of some kind (this is, after all,
a mini, not a laptop). Would there be any advantage to the Magic
Mouse over the Magic Trackpad? As I understand it, they are the same
except that the mouse lets you click. Is that of any help in vo, or
should I just go for the trackpad?

14. Maybe macs don't work this way, but how do I bring up the context
menu for an item? For instance, I was trying to figure out how to
remove icons from the dock, and I thought that if

using Apex as display: problems with keyboard

2011-08-18 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I have a bn Apex bt 32 which I have successfully paired with my mac.
I expected to see many of the same vo keys here as are on the iPod,
like flicking, top or bottom of window, rotor commands, and so on.
Nothing is there, though. Having resigned myself to a few hours of
assigning everything, I went to the braille category of the vo
utility, selected my display, and opened the assign keys window. The
problem, though, is that pressing cmd-b plays the "assign key" tone,
but will not actually accept the keys I press. My questions, then:
1. Is the failure to assign custom keys the fault of the mac
(10.7.1), the Apex (ks9.1), or the user (a mac newbie)?
2. Is there a script or something like that out there that has
already done the work of making braille displays act on the mac much
like they do on iOS, specifically the Apex models? I can assign my
keys, if I can get #1 (above) sorted out, but I don't want to
re-invent the wheel.
Thanks!

you can't buy the jam packs via the Mac app store at present to my knowledge.
But you can pick them up anywhere online. try Amazon. As far as Plugins, you
can't use VSTs on garageband. They have to be AU plugins.

Connecting up is totally cool, just do it privately, K? Besides, it's more

Hi Chad!
I've found on some text fields that I have to do a mouse click and then you can
type!
So I make sure the mouse is there with vo+command+f5 then mouse click
vo+shift+space!
But still sometimes although vo says nothing the text is going in!
And I just left arrow once and back and the text is then red, so this might
work for you!
If not back to the drawing board! :]

Hi list:

Here's a link to the latest VoiceOver manual for Lion. It was posted a few

I'm not sure why Apple hasn't updated the regular Accessibility pages to

Something odd about garage band. I once got garage band with snow leopard, on
the installation dvd set. Now however, I have a working clean install of Lion,
done from a USB stick, without the additional ilife software.
I looked in the app store, and garage band seems to cost 12 euros, which is

it b free? Do new Lion machine buyers still get an extra disk with ilife

Re: speaking of keyboards and the macbook pro...

2011-08-18 Thread Scott Howell
Karen,

It does not matter, you can connect the keyboard prior or after boot without
any concern of problems.

Hi,

As far as the JamPacks go, they stopped selling them from their online store
since they were boxed software. Supposedly they're going to start selling
them through the Mac app store, but I have no idea when that will be, so as
far as I know, you can no longer purchase them, but I could be wrong.
I'm not sure about 3rd-party plugins, however.

Subject: garageband jampacks and other plugins?

Hi,
I ordered my macbook air 11 inch with i7 processor today and because I am
still a student I got 100 euro discount and 75 euro discount as itunes gift
card.
The thing I am looking forward the most, when the air arrives, is toying
with garageband.
I know apple itself developed 5 jampacks for garageband and I was wondering
how you can buy these? Will I be able to use my itunes credit for it/are
they in-app purchases.
I was also wondering if third party developers have msfre plugins for
garageband (extra instruments maybe) and if you can use third party plugins
made for other programs for example through the vst format?
Thanks in advance
Greetings, Anouk,
