Re: JetBlue vs Chrome
Well, my son just informed me that a revised website will roll out on December 9 for JetBlue. There may also be an iPhone app as well coming around the same time. What's unclear is whether accessibility issues will be addressed. Les On Nov 14, 2011, at 3:05 PM, Mika Pyyhkala wrote: Hi, There are known accessibility issues with the main JetBlue web site. You may be able to get parts of it to work with various browser and screen reader combinations, but other features may not work at all. One feature where there is no work around is the flash based check in. JetBlue is working on an internal accessibility initiative, but it still would be good for them to hear from blind consumers about the accessibility of the web site. You may want to tweet them @JetBlue if you are on Twitter, or contact them in a written form in some way. You should be able to book flights using http://mobile.jetblue.com (although if you use this site from an iPhone the language preference is set to Pollish) I believe for a promotion you can also use: http://mobile.jetblue.com/promo (for instance today there is a 20% off promo code) I think its all upper case 20FORYOU They also have a reservations special services Help Line available at 855-232-5463 (855-ADALine) where the agents will be familiar with waiving the booking fee for blind passengers with accessibility issues. These agents will also readily be able to book web fares if you have an accessibility issue. If you call the main 800-JetBlue phone number they likely won't be as familiar with accessibility issues or especially with booking web fares over the phone. Even if you book through the special services desk, you can tell them you do not want a special service request SSR in your record. If you have an SSR in your record it flags you in their system as being blind, and it also prevents you from using the online check in. Much of my work in the NFB has to do with airline issues, and I regularly work with the DOT and the various airlines. There is an NPRM right now having to do with airline web site and kiosk accessibility which DOT is seeking public comment on. Best, Mika Pyyhkala @pyyhkala On 11/14/11, Jonathan C. more on speech recognition on the Mac
Hi all, I've been playing around again with speech recognition following Yuma's posts yesterday. My experience is that it seems to work about 3 out of ten times. Is this others experience? Yuma, you seem to be having a lot of success, did you tweak anything in the settings to improve recognition? I'm currently using the key press method, because when I tried to have it listen for a key word, I literally never got the Mac to respond. Re: more on speech recognition on the Mac
Hi Donna, I haven't looked at this in a while, but there is a button labelled calibrate in the speech recognition dialog. It should bring up a slider that you can move around until it is more accurate. I can't tell you what the slider does, just that that I moved it around until it was more accurate. Hey Greg, Thanks! That seems to have done the trick. Hi Jenny, Yes, the mobile version of Facebook is very accessible. Even the main site used to work very well until Facebook decided to change its interface. The problem with the main site is that they constantly keep making unnecessary changes to it. Even sighted people don't like most of those ridiculous changes. So, I mostly use the mobile site. RE: Preparing for clean lion install
Hi! I think that if you hit U from within system preferences, you should be able to find it that way. Otherwise, just start tabbing around until you hear it. They totally changed the layout of system preferences, so it's easy to lose stuff. Speaking of which, since I wasn't noticing any benefits or performance improvements at all from the clean lion install I did over the weekend, I've decided to reinstall my updated version. I recognize that I need to start making myself learn lion, so will only run SL from an external drive when needed. It's just that for me, the clean install of lion was causing more trouble than it was worth, so if I have to put up with lion, I'm going to at least revert to a setup which more or less worked. The only thing I will definitely need to continue using SL for is creating spoken text audio files; no matter what I do, that faeture just doesn't work reliably under Lion, and when I did manage to get an mp3 under lion, it read out the line of underline characters which I use as section separaters in the file I need to make periodic mp3 versions of. That was never an issue under SL. So, I don't know what the problem is, but at least I have my external drive with SL that I can boot from whenever I need to. In the mean time, I suppose it's time to start trying to tame that pesky lion. (sigh) Good luck finding what you need to fix, and I hope that you're having a great day! Apple's AssistiveTouch Helps the Disabled Use a Smartphone - NYTimes.com
Hi all! Well some of you have said you've got Motor-control problems! So I wonder if this would work with vo! But it is Apple doing there thing! Colin Qapla! Chegh chew jaj Vam jaj Kak http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/11/10/apples-assistivetouch-helps-the-disabled-use-a-smartphone/ Apple’s AssistiveTouch Helps the Disabled Use a Smartphone Plenty has been written about the new iPhone 4S, with its voice-controlled virtual assistant Siri, and about iOS 5, its software. But in writing a book about both, I stumbled across an amazingly thoughtful feature that I haven’t seen a word about: something called AssistiveTouch. The Times’s technology columnist, David Pogue, keeps you on top of the industry in his free, weekly e-mail newsletter. Sign up | See Sample Now, Apple has always gone to considerable lengths to make the iPhone usable for people with vision and hearing impairments. If you’re deaf, you can have the LED flash to get your attention when the phone rings. You can create custom vibration patterns for each person who might call you. You can convert stereo music to mono (handy if you’re deaf in one ear). If you’re blind, you can literally turn the screen off and operate everything — do your e-mail, surf the Web, adjust settings, run apps — by tapping and letting the phone speak what you’re touching. You can also magnify the screen or reverse black for white (for better-contrast reading). In short, iPhone was already pretty good at helping out if you’re blind or deaf. But until iOS 5 came along, it was tough rocks if you had motor-control problems. How are you supposed to shake the phone (a shortcut for “Undo”) if you can’t even hold the thing? How are you supposed to pinch-to-zoom a map or a photo if you can’t even move your fingers? One new feature, called AssistiveTouch, is Apple’s accessibility team at its most creative. When you turn on this feature in Settings-General-Accessibility, a new, white circle appears at the bottom of the screen. It stays there all the time. When you tap it, you get a floating on-screen palette. Its buttons trigger motions and gestures on the iPhone screen without requiring hand or multiple-finger movement. All you have to be able to do is tap with a single finger — even a stylus you’re holding in your teeth or fist. For example, you can tap the Home on-screen button instead of pressing the physical Home button. If you tap Device, you get a sub-palette of six functions that would otherwise require you to grasp the phone or push its tiny physical buttons. There’s Rotate Screen (tap this instead of turning the phone 90 degrees), Lock Screen (tap instead of pressing the Sleep switch), Volume Up and Volume Down (tap instead of pressing the volume keys), Shake (does the same as shaking the phone to undo typing), and Mute/Unmute (tap instead of flipping the small Mute switch on the side). If you tap Gestures, you get a peculiar palette that depicts a hand holding up two, three, four, or five fingers. When you tap the three-finger icon, for example, you get three blue circles on the screen. They move together. Drag one of them, and the phone thinks you’re dragging three fingers on its surface. Using this technique, you can operate apps that require multiple fingers dragging on the screen. To me, the most impressive part is that you can define your own gestures. In Settings-General-Accessibility, you can tap Create New Gesture to draw your own gesture right on the screen, using up to five fingers. For example, suppose you’re frustrated in Google Maps because you can’t do the two-finger double-tap that means “zoom out.” On the Create New Gesture screen, get somebody to do the two-finger double-tap for you. Tap Save and give the gesture a name—say, “2 double tap.” From now on, “2 double tap” shows up on the final AssistiveTouch panel, called Favorites, ready to trigger with a single tap by a single finger or stylus. (Apple starts you off with one predefined gesture already in Favorites: Pinch. That’s the two-finger pinch or spread gesture you use to zoom in and out of photos, maps, Web pages, PDF documents, and so on. Now you can trigger it with only one finger.) But in writing a book about both, I stumbled across an amazingly thoughtful feature that I haven’t seen a word about: something called AssistiveTouch. Now you can trigger it with only one finger.) I recognize that I need to start making myself learn lion, so will only run SL from an external drive when needed. Jennifer, I just wanted to chime in that the regular Facebook site is what I use. A majority of what one wishes to accomplish is accessible on the site. I have used the mobile site. From time to time, I'll use a feature or two on there, but I much rather use the main site. You can post links, update status, comment on your own status, comment on others' updates, or use different aps. Hi, Nope. I haven't figured out away to do this with Garageband at least. Your best bet is to use an audio editor to fade the part of the audio track you want lowered. Re: more on speech recognition on the Mac
Hi Donna, Greg is right about the calibration. And just as you have tried it, the constant listening method is a bit quirky as it seems as though the constant chatter of voice over while we use the computer can probably overwhelm the listening algorithms. So the best approach is really to keep a certain key as the command key. I've tried several times with the listen keyword method with different original names but it's a bit annoying to keep calling amadeus to check the time for example or other tasks. And some tasks could also be enhanced such as some form of automation coupled with applescript or automator workflows. Best Yuma On 16/11/2011, at 4:23 AM, Goodin, Donna wrote: Hey Greg, Thanks! Hi Kirsten, highlighting an empty portion of a table in Numbers and copying it to Pages should also work. But creating a table without contents is also possible in Pages itself. I'm totally with you. No. It sounds as though you're doing the right thing. I would leave the text in Numbers after doing the layout, but I can't get it to save in Word. It wants to do Excel, which I don't want. No, it won't save in Word. Also, Pages has been converting all my text to an image immediately when I paste it. It shouldn't be an image, but it's a kind of dynamic element that VoiceOver can't read. However, if you use the command that converts the table to text, you can check it and then press Cmd-z to undo that command without damaging the layout, as long as you don't change anything. I've created short cuts for the commands to convert table to text, and to convert text to table to make things easier. Alternatively, you can use the command to copy the selection into a new textEdit window so that you can check your table. I hope I haven't confused you further.
