Re: Hi
Hi there. I am new to the list and don't have a mac yet but my mac mini is coming tomorrow. I have been concerned about this monitor issue and only just joined the list so my apologies in advance for a subject that has probably been beaten to death. 1. Do I need to have a nomitor connected? 2. If so does it need to have power applied and if so does it need to actually be turned on? 3. without a monitor how does the accessibility change? Does the screen layout in an application change, etc.? Thanks very much for this because I need to do some testing to make sure a program is accessible on the mac for my employer. Re: Hi
The general consensus is that it is best to have some kind of monitor connected to a Mac Mini, or at least, with the newer models. Early on, one could get away with having just a video adaptor connected, but apparently, at this point, especially using Safari, there seems to be a lot of lag and slow down to lead most to believe a monitor is the best solution. Re: Hi
Hi Don! I'll also add that with Mac the layout on screen stays the same so a blind person can work side by side with someone sighted and they do not have to look at a screen that has been rearranged! And you might want to look at a trackpad if your already using a Iphone or pod! With the Trackpad if the sighted person says that something on screen is at the top right you can find it with the trackpad and there is of course strokes like 2 finger flicks and such [ might be worth a look] hth Colin On 7 Feb 2012, at 09:53, Charlie Doremus wrote: The general consensus is that it is best to have some kind of monitor connected to a Mac Mini, or at least, with the newer models. Re: Hi
Wow! Thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate it. For now I guess I will connect my monitor and not rely just on an adapter being present. Not the worst thing in the world but like others, I hope apple fixes this in a future OS release. Lets hope it doesn't require different hardware but I doubt it. Re: Slow boot time with Lion. Opinions wanted.
the recent update seems to have made both boot time and general responsiveness better for me. My computer was very frustrating to use since upgrading to Lion and now it's fine. Much less of the busy message overall. Joel On 2/6/2012 9:42 PM, Daniel Miller wrote: Hi, I've reported that issue several times to apple. They're aware of it, and are working on a fix, at last response from the support people. Things like this take time, however, so don't expect it to be fixed tomorrow. Now keep in mind, I also experienced and still am experiencing what you guys are talking about, but it's honestly no reason to shoot down the OS, for something that they're obviously trying to fix, even if it takes them a bit longer than we'd like to pinpoint what's causing the issue. Another thing you have to keep in mind, Lions minimum system requirements state 2GB of ram and a 2.0GHZ dual core processor is the bear least you can get away with and run Lion, but with some slowness. Ram can have a factor in boot times, as well as hard drive speed (5400 as opposed to 7200 RPM), so be aware of that fact as well. -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Missy Hoppe Sent: Monday, February 06, 2012 8:10 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Slow boot time with Lion. Opinions wanted. Hello. I, too, experience incredibly slow boot times with lion. I'm using a 2011 Macbook Pro 724LLA or whatever that model number is, and I'm guessing your estimate of 1 minute 43 seconds is about the same for my boot time. More annoying for me than the slow boot time, though, is that under lion, VO startup is hit and miss at best. When lion first came out, it always got stuck in come window called com.doc.apple.extra. That got fixed, only to be replaced by the fact that if VO starts talking by itself at all, I'm stuck in a window called speech synthesis server. In all the time I've run lion, it's never landed me on the desktop the way snowy kitty always does, and more often than not, I have to press command-tab before VO says anything at all. So, to make a long story short, it isn't just you, and like you, I've tried everything I can think of to solve the problem, but nothing seems to make a difference. It seems that my ancient 80 GB external drive which I still use to boot into Snow Leopard when necessary runs faster than Lion, and that's just wrong. So, like you, I'm wondering if there's any point in reporting this to apple, or if it's something that taking my macbook to an apple store might fix. I've just learned to live with it, but it's very strange, especially since Snow Leopard boots so much faster and always reliably starts on the desktop. If you ever find a way to speed up lion's boot time, please share as I'd love to get this issue resolved somehow. Thanks! I did a time estimation just now and found that from the press of the power button until VO is heard on the log in screen takes roughly 1 minute and 43 seconds. I'm running a late 2008 unibody MacBook and even though it is an older Mac, it was never that slow while running SnowLeopard. I've tried everything I can think of. I've Ran a battery of tasks using Onyx, I've cleaned out my login items, I've checked free disk space, repaired permissions, verified the start up disk, etc, etc. Just wondering if this might be worth sending in a bug report to Apple or calling Apple Care on this issue. I don't know if you ever used it, but if you already bought it it's a breeze. Just hit command shift n after you start amadeus pro, and a new batch converter window will appear. You have a formats tab, where you set what you want your new files to become, in yor case mp3. You also set the mp3 encoding settings in this tab. In the actions tab, you can pick actions to be performed on the files, like normalization if you want, before being converted. In the other 2 tabs, you can instruct amadeus what to do with meta info such as the file tag and its art work, or you can leave that out altogether if you wish, on your to be created mp3 files. Then when you point to a folder to convert, it can also recursively search that folder for all the files it contains, and then do them all in one simple go. You can also tell amadeus to convert a folder, and put all new files in the same location as their originals, and then deleting the originals. If you know what you are doing this can be a breeze. Once you are familiar with the little interface in the batch converter in amadeus pro, you will love it. If you don't have amadeus then I hope others will chime in on this. Hth, Paul. Re: converting tapes to MP3
Hi: My dad has a USB tape deck. On the Windows side, he says he has to listen to the tape while it is recording, and watch a timer on the screen. Then at specific points, he has to create tracks. I want to be able to record on my Mac using his USB tape deck, and figure out how to edit the tracks later. That way, I could get all of the tapes on the Mac. once those are physically there, I can then go edit later. I'm just not sure how you'd do this, or know when to make the track. Once everything is edited, I'd like to convert the files to MP3. On Feb 5, 2012, at 6:20 PM, Tim Kilburn wrote: Hi, The short answer is, Yes. You should use Audio High-Jack Pro to bring the music into your Mac. You would need a typical home stereo tape deck or any tape player with RCA outputs. Connect a stereo RCA to 1/8 inch headphone jack style cable between the tape deck and the computer. The RCA jacks connect to the left and right outs from the tape deck and put the 1/8 inch jack into the line-in of the Mac. Start up Audio High-Jack Pro, select Line-In as your Input source and begin recording. You can then use Audacity, Amadeus Pro or Fission as your audio editor to trim everything up. That should do it. I would suggest, get a standard patch chord, one that has both 8th inch jacks at the end of it. Just plug one end into linein on the mac and the other end into the stereo or tape deck, and just record in audio highjack. It's definetly worth the price. Re: Home Sharing question
That's the same reason I first figured it out was to keep the kids from messing up my wife's laptop when they were watching movies and such. I also did the parental controls stuff to keep them from accidentally deleting things. CB On 2/6/12 6:42 PM, Scott Howell wrote: Well I answered my own question and thanks a lot gents. I set this up and it works exactly as I had hoped. In fact the really great side benefit is the library has only those things my wife and kid want which is the movies. Now we don't even need the DVD player. :) On Feb 6, 2012, at 1:30 PM, Chris Blouch wrote: You can be logged into one box multiple times as different users, each running a copy of iTunes. Each instance of iTunes has it's own library and preferences. So I was logged into my laptop both as myself and an account I called Test. Each one ran iTunes and had sharing turned on. Then on another Mac I pulled up iTunes and saw both Chris Blouch's Library and Test's Library as choices. You'll want to turn on Show fast user switching menu in the Preferences Users Groups Login Options. Then you'll have a new user menu to the right of the clock in the menu bar (VO-M twice and the VO-right a couple times). You should be able to pick each user in turn there to switch back and forth. As a new account you'll need to turn voiceover on again along with any other favorite preference changes since it will all be stock. CB On 2/6/12 12:03 PM, Scott Howell wrote: Chris, Yes I understand that is possible, but unfortunately and unless I am missing something here, the issue is I would have to log in as that user and launch iTunes. THis means I could not be logged in as myself because it would not be possible to effectively have two instances of iTUnes running. On Feb 6, 2012, at 11:54 AM, Chris Blouch wrote: I'm saying you can have two different users both logged into the same Mac and both with their own instance of iTunes running. I'm done buying computers for a while. :) So, with that said my wife is a user on my Mac. I could obviously log in as her and setup iTunes and that would work great. However, I do not know how I could have us both logged into the same machine and I think what you are saying is you have two different Macs in this scenario? Seems to me the problem is that iTunes has to be running and that library active. If I could get around that I probably would solve my problem. :) THanks, On Feb 6, 2012, at 10:40 AM, Chris Blouch wrote: As an aside, an old MacMini would also make a nice media computer if you want real storage and more than what an AppleTV will get you. The headphone jack is actually a digital optical output which you can connect to any typical surround-sound stereo to get the full 5.1 output from DVDs and such. That said, I did try just duplicating the iTunes app to try and run two instances, but no luck, they share the same preference files. What did work was setting up another user on my Mac and having that second user logged in running iTunes. That instance had it's own library and preferences so I could share two libraries from the same machine with two users logged in. CB On 2/6/12 10:11 AM, Tim Kilburn wrote: Hi Scott, If you had a 1st Generation Apple TV with the built-in HD, this would work as once the Apple TV is synced, you wouldn't need to have the iTunes Library actually active. Now, of course, they're hard to find now and you need sighted assistance to set them up, but after that, you'd be golden. I was also thinking about iTunes Match on the 2nd Gen Apple TV, you'd be able to use a matched Library in that situation except, at the moment, it only applies to iTunes music files, not movie and TV shows. You might also have volume restrictions from your ISP that could interfere with this idea as well. Not helping much, am I? Hmmm, you could stoop to putting Windows on your Mac as well so that you could run Fusion or Parallels, thus having two Libraries running simultaneously from the same machine. I don't particularly care for Windows though, even though I have to use it at work sometimes. I'll think some more and let you know if I come up with anything. Later... CyberSound Music Studio VO friendly, worth it?
Just as it says; I'm wondering whether it's worth my time to acquire CyberSound Music Studio with keyboard. Is it VO friendly, too old (All the reviews on the web I can find are from about 2004), etc? Voiceover text edit Save As bug
There is a bug where saving a file with a non-default extension pops a verification modal dialog but Voiceover does not announce this and focus can't be moved to it. Discovered on OSX 10.7 latest public patch level. Reproduced on multiple machines. Steps to reproduce: 1. Turn on Voiceover 2. Launch TextEdit 3. Type some text 4. Save As... 5. Name the document something with an extension such as test.html TextEdit pops a dialog saying that I can't save the document with .html as it needs to be .rtf. Or if I have set things up for plaintext it pops a similar dialog asking if I would like a .txt extension instead. Expected Behavior Focus should move to the modal dialog and announce the message and available buttons Actual behavior Focus remains on the initial file save as pane, users can continue to interact with it such as continuing to change the file name and action the Save button. There is no indication of a modal popup requiring action to continue and there is no way to move focus to the modal even if the VO user knew it was there. Please advise when this will be fixed. Re: Hi
Welcome Don, Looks like both you and I are both new to macs. I bought a Mac mini a few weeks ago and have been using it without a monitor. These other comments about system lags and all haven't bitten me yet but then again, I've used it little so far. The main issue without a monitor is when you login, you can have VO startup during the login screen but once logged into your account, you have to turn VO back on; minor hassle for me since I don't have a spare monitor to hook up and I tried to go the budget route with this purchase. It is doable though. But if you have a monitor to use then by all means, go for it; probably better off doing that. On 2/7/12, Don Breda don.br...@gmail.com wrote: Wow! Thanks for all the responses. The mac looks at sense pins on the VGA connection which is basically some resisters bridging certain pins together. So this is a passive detection and should work even if the monitor is not plugged in or turned on. Back in the day some sites sold VGA Terminators which was a little dongle with these resisters soldered to the right pins but every vendor I found nowdays no longer stocks them. Re: Slow boot time with Lion. Opinions wanted.
Due to my newness to the mac, I can't compare with prior versions of OS X but one observation I do concur with is the lack of focus to the desktop when VO is started. I found a work-around for that one though and I never suffer that one anymore. I added at least one item to my list of items to launch at login. I do this in the user settings under system preferences. In my case, I added the terminal app in there because I like to use terminal from time to time so I figured it a good choice. Now whenever I login, I just press command+f5 to start VO (this is due to me not having a monitor connected) VO starts up every time and focuses me right to the desktop. Oh, I have the checkbox for terminal set to hide otherwise I think terminal would grab the focus. I thought the boot time to be a bit lengthy byt a lot of windows systems are slower than that. I've only seen the busy stuff once in a while; wasn't sure what the cause of that was. I see that a lot with Mail and IMAP implementations and I figured that was caused by fetching a new message every time you move up and down the message list. On 2/7/12, Joel Zimba zimbameis...@gmail.com wrote: the recent update seems to have made both boot time and general responsiveness better for me. Thanks! I just got into the Mac world about 3 weeks ago so maybe in the future with more money, I would expand the mac collection to include a powerful macbook pro or something. Re: mac mini and speakers?
You'll need a TOSlink to MiniTOSlink cable like this one for $4 http://sewelldirect.com/Toslink-to-35mm-Mini-Audio-Cable-15-ft.asp When I first set my mini up for home theatre stuff I went to all the usual places like BestBuy, RadioShack and even the Apple store. None of them knew what I was talking about. So you pretty much have to order the cable from your favorite supplier on the web. The one end is the usual square-ish fibre optic connector which fits most home theatre systems. The other end is shaped like a mini headphone jack. The main difference is it's not an electrical connection. There is a small hole in the tip for light to go into and out of. My cable came with little caps to keep dirt from getting into the tips which I kept on until the very moment I plug them into my mini or stereo. CB On 2/7/12 11:54 AM, Mr. L. Re: converting tapes to MP3
Hi Marc, Ricardo, and Others, The MacBook Air models will handle recording from, for example, the headsets with Mic that come with the iPhone. In that case the setting under System Preferences Sound Input table for devices will change from a name of Internal microphone to External microphone when you plug the headset in. The problem is that you need headphones with a three-way 3.5mm jack - plain stereo isn't enough, since the jack is being used for both input and output. This is why a regular patch cable won't work here for input recording. This behavior is true of both the 2011 and 2010 model MacBook Airs. If you want to test this out, plug in one of the headsets with Mic from an iPhone or iPod Touch -- or other model iPods that can use such headsets for recording as well as listening. You'll find that you can listen to the audio through the headset (no surprise). If you go to System Preferences Sound and examine the Input and Output tabs, the device name will change from Internal Speakers to Headphones on the Output device table, and from Internal microphone to External microphone on the Input device table. The device type will say Headphone port for output and Microphone port for input. Both these functions are built into the same jack. Now, if you launch QuickTime Player, and start a new audio recording with Control-Option-Command-N or by navigating to the File menu on the menu bar and selecting this option, you can press the Start Recording button, start speaking, then press the button again to stop and have it turn into a Play button. Then you can play back to hear what you've recorded with the headset Mic. The individual files will show up in the Movies folder under your user account named Audio Recording, Audio Recording 2, etc. in uncompressed AIFF format, as Chris Blouch described earlier in this thread. Other headsets with built-in Mic can also be used the same way. If you connect a Griffin iMic to the USB port, it will show up as another device option under System Preferences Sound named iMic USB audio system, and you can select it on either the Input or Output tab. Plugging a patch cable (3.5mm jack to 3.5mm jack) from your audio source to the iMic input port will work here to record. (My Griffin iMic is 7 years old, and gets automatically recognized. I can also use it to record directly to my iPad if I plug it into the USB connector of the Camera Kit accessory for the iPad dock. You just use a recording app, such as Voxie, or other app that is set to easily stop and start recording by shaking the device.) HTH. Re: converting m4a to wav or mp3
Hi Angie and Others, You can download a free trial version of Amadeus Pro from the developer's web site: http://www.hairersoft.com/pro.html#4 There's both a Pro and Lite version, and I think the difference in price is $60 for Pro and $40 for Lite. Batch conversion (that Paul described) is only supported in the Pro version, which also features multi-track editing and support of Audio plug-ins -- other features not in the Lite version. The editing interface is likely to be different from what your are used to. Check the guides at Keith's icanworkthisthing site for a quick, VoiceOver friendly summary of command shortcuts: • Audio and Recording With Mac and Voiceover: http://icanworkthisthing.com/docs/mac_with_voiceover/audio/ You can purchase Amadeus Pro from either the App Store or separately from the developer's site. The App Store is the easy way to buy it, but check the developer's web site for trial versions, and additional downloadable plug-ins. He also maintains a forum for user questions and discussions. Colin has already described how to convert using iTunes. Basically, you can choose your default importing format for music. If you don't do anything, it will be set to AAC format. This is done from the iTunes preferences file, brought up with Command-comma. On the general tab, in addition to a pop-up menu button that lets you choose the default action when a CD is inserted, there will be an Import Settings button. Press this to bring up the dialog window for choosing the format and quality of your default encoding method. You'll find options for AAC and MP3 as compressed options, along with Apple Lossless, and uncompressed WAV and AIFF options -- the default Windows and Mac uncompressed formats. After that, your selected format will be used as the default for when you rip CDs. If you add other audio files to iTunes, you'll have the option to convert the file to your default audio importing format when you check the menu options under the Advanced menu on your iTunes menu bar. And you can change this via your preferences menu at any later time. (Chris Blouch actually said all this in his succinct reply; I'm just fleshing out the details.) HTH. Hth, Paul. RE: Slow boot time with Lion. Opinions wanted.
Hi! Thanks for this intriguing suggestion. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything else I'd want to run at startup apart from whatever already has to: dropbox and audio hijack scheduler. I guess I can look for something, though if it really might help. On the other side of the coin, I wonder if there's something running at startup that doesn't have to. I'm still too new to mac to do much playing, but it seems to me that an awful lot of things run, but I don't have the sense to know which of them are important, and which it might be safe to delete. I went through my startup options and told all of them to be hidden, thinking that might help, but no, VO still is in the speech synthesis server window, if it starts automatically at all. Since 10.7.3, I've had to command-tab out of seemingly nothing before it will even start. I have light and color perception, and am not noticing anything popping up on the screen, which makes this problem even more mysterious. Re: Slow boot time with Lion. Opinions wanted.
I never got stuck in any speech synthesis window; have no idea what that even is. Oh, you have a couple things in the startup list? Humm, I would think that should work then. I would like to add dropbox but didn't find anything in the app store for it. Do I have to get that directly from Dropbox? Actually, I wonder if whatever it is that enables my desktop to properly focus has to be some actual app that has a focus of its own. I think before I added terminal to mine, I had iTunes Helper and it was also hidden but still had the focus issues. It was after I added terminal to the list that my focus issue cleared up. You might ask, how did I discover that? Well, while dealing with Apple tech support concerning why VO wouldn't startup on my mac mini, someone suggested to add VoiceOver Utility to that startup list. Well, that improved the focus situation but not the auto starting of VO. Since then, I removed the VO utility as I can invoke that at any time I need it with VO+F8 and I want quick easy access to the terminal. So as far as I got, things are stable for me and all I do right now is if I login anew, I press command+f5 and VO starts talking for me without further interaction on my part. Sorry I can't help you with your additional problems. On 2/7/12, Missy Hoppe melis...@fuse.net wrote: Hi! Another thing you have to keep in mind, Lions minimum system requirements state 2GB of ram and a 2.0GHZ dual core processor is the bear least you can get away with and run Lion, but with some slowness. Re: converting m4a to wav or mp3
Hi Ioana, I think that Amadeus Lite has all the basic editing functions of Amadeus Pro (but not the multi-track support for recording/editing). One of the features that I like is the ability to drop markers automatically in the middle of silence gaps of a middle of a specified time interval to split up recordings. You can adjust these thresholds for this placement, and also edit to remove or interactively shift the marker points. You can also manually set up markers, either by dropping them in the playing track, or by inputting a specific time for a marker. I think that Amadeus Pro can convert MP4 to MP3, for example. I've read about people using a combination of Handbrake and Amadeus Pro to extract audio from movie tracks, usually starting from DVDs and using Handbrake to convert the Video_TS folder to MP4, then using Amadeus Pro to convert MP4 to MP3. I haven't done this myself. I know the Lite version supports things like editing audio tracks of QuickTime movies, but I'm not sure about other movie formats. I'd guess you could export the audio track to different formats. You could try separately downloading a trial version of Amadeus Lite: http://www.hairersoft.com/lite.html#4 There are people on this list who routinely do a lot of audio processing and editing who can probably give you a better answer. Re: please ignore my questions on amadeus was Re: converting m4a to wav or mp3
Hi, I replied before I read this post, but maybe the comments about automatic marker generation will also be of interest. You might want to separately try the download for the Lite version: http://www.hairersoft.com/lite.html#4 Another thing that I like to use this app for is de-noising tracks. You can select a section of your recorded track that doesn't have active recording signal and have Amadeus Pro (or Lite) use that to de-noise the rest of your recording. This isn't sophisticated, and more expensive sound-cleaning applications can do a better job, but this works fairly well as a simple solution for a wide range of cases. You've probably also found that you can undo a lot of your editing actions and marker placements if you don't like the results. HTH. Re: converting tapes to MP3
Hi, There's a TidBITS article about digitizing LPs where the author uses Audio Highjack Pro to do the recording and Amadeus Pro to do the editing, as Tim Kilburn outlined. I think that one of the reasons people like to use Audio Hijack Pro in this mode is the low latency when you do the sound capture, and the ease of doing something else with your system while the recording is going on. I've generally just recorded directly to Amadeus Pro. Here's the link to the TidBITS article: • Media Creation - Transferring Vinyl LPs to Digital: One Approach by Matt Neuberg 10 Mar 2010 http://tidbits.com/article/11072 Audio Hijack Pro can be used for other functions, as well, including recording separate Skype sessions. There's actually a new version of Audio Hijack Pro that just came out at the beginning of this week, that will now support capturing audio from sandboxed Mac App Store applications. I was going to take a look at it. John Gruber's Daring Fireball feed has a discount coupon for Daring Fireball readers that will work for this week only: DF201202 if you download and purchase the program from the Rogue Amoeba web site: http://rogueamoeba.com/ (As you might guess, the Mac App Store doesn't support coupon promotions or trial downloads.) Re: instructions on how to use pages with voice over?
Chenelle, I'm just embarking upon my Pages adventure, as I've recently decided to become familiar with the program using VO. As I discovered in the past, while using MS Word with Windows JAWS, one of the tricks to using any feature-packed application with adaptive software is to learn about that applications shortcut keys. Often times, these hot-keys can accomplish your goals, with a minimum of fuss much less effort than the work-arounds that the adaptive software tries to piggy-back on to the original processing needs of the software in question. To whit, I have begun my adventure by selecting the short-cut keys option under the Help menu in pages. This will provide you with a list of nearly 250 various key combinations in Pages for accomplishing all sorts of tasks. Daunting? I'll say, but it's a start. I wish you luck invite you to share any of your findings as well, CJ On Feb 7, 2012, at 7:40 AM, Chenelle Hancock wrote: hi everyone: i have had my mb pro for about sixteen months now and for the life of me!. i am still having problems using page correctly with voice over etc... i wanted to know if there were a list of key board commands that i could use to navigate pages?. thank you so much for your time i really appreciate it. sincerely, chenelle. Ok, as to not make this an off-topic post, can I get some tips from you off list on purchasing stuff on ebay? Re: utorrent and accessibility?
finding them hasn't been the problem.. finding the money to buy any of them is a very big issue. There is a reason that apple hasn't gone after folks like me. it is because that part of their EULA would be considered unenforceable. there is also a value in having people like me that have such a system setup: debugging and development. as for the USB issue, I wasn't aware of any Attack code written into the updater. guess I learn something new everyday. anyway, thanks for the input. -eric On Feb 7, 2012, at 6:56 PM, Mr. L. I use a cable with two RCA plugs attached to the tape output and on the other end a standard 35 millimeter jack like the one on headphones for the iPhone. Next I use Amadeus pro. With that program you can input the tape then edit tracks and much more. I then save in the format of my choice and my tapes are now digital. I do the same thing for vinyl records. There is a slightly outdated podcast on blindcooltech.com I think I called it Amadeus Pro Vinyl to CD. It covers a lot of the Amadeus Pro basics. If you have a USB tape player then you will not need the Griffin iMike. Hope this helps. eRic Caron On Feb 5, 2012, at 2:50 PM, Sarai Bucciarelli wrote: Hi guys: Is it possible for a blind person to convert tapes to MP3 files using a Mac with Voiceover? Re: New epub Reader
That is good news about this app. But I wonder where can one find unprotected epub material? It seems all the epub stuff I'm familiar with has drm of some sort or other.
