Re: assigning a mailbox to a command number keystroke

2012-09-22 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Mark,

The hotkey depends on where the mailbox is placed in favorites. The numbers
will go in order of the sequence of mailboxes there. Suppose you already have
it going to sent messages when you press command-2. If you put another
mailbox in that same position, such as Mac Visionaries, then you would use
command-2 to get to your Mac Visionaries folder.

Voice Over losing focus when clearing notifications concerning VIPS

the button reverse language in Dashboard widget translation doesn't work

Numbers is still very difficult to use if you have a big spreadsheet

While the command to do this in Lion was bizarre at least it worked
most of the time. Calling Apple Accessibility, I find it hilarious

QuickNav is still unbelievably buggy. Several times a day QuickNav

I O S 6 Bug: Accessibility seriously broken

2012-09-22 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK. I have been playing now since last Wednesday with the new I O S 6, and
I must say, so far I like what I've seen. That was... until... I opened the
music app. What a mess!

First of all, I find that half of the time when I tap the tabs across the
bottom, like artists, songs, playlists, albums, etc. they do not get
activated. It's very inconsistent. Sometimes if I am lucky they do, but
generally not.

Once in whichever tab I wish to be focused on, if I try locating my table
index on the righthand side of the screen, so that I can move letter by
letter subgroup, I find the table index slider isn't there any longer. I
hear that from a visual standpoint, it is still there, and that in fact,
nothing in the whole app seems to have changed, but now, from a Voiceover
perspective, I'm being rendered to turning my rotor to headings, then one
finger flicking up and down to move letter by letter quickly through the
list. Not that there is per sey anything wrong with that method, although
it feels extremely awquard.

Here's the other issue. I am also noticing that I may have an artist or say
a song title etc. in the list. I only visually seem to have one instance of
the item listed, however, both flicking through, as well as using the item
chooser list is yielding sometimes, upwards of literally 10 or more
instances of the same item before moving on to the next item. It's almost
like I may flick and hear Beach Boys, 10 times before I then hear Beatles.
I know I don't have 10 different artists called Beach Boys. Visually, my
mother even confirmed that it only is showing the entry one time only. It's
like it's just getting stuck somehow.

I did call Apple, yesterday, and they were using an IPhone 4S just like I
have, and were able to also reproduce identically the same problems I
described.

Also, it seems that table indexes aren't just busted in the music app. When
I went into the Contacts app, the table index isn't working there either,
even though again, a sighted individual did confirm with me that visually,
the slider bar is there and that nothing seems visually to have changed.

Apple Accessibility has assured me that they are going to file this as a
bug, but you all may also want to call and let them know as well. The more
people who let them know, the more likely they'll be to fix it.

Chris.

like it's just getting stuck somehow.

I did call Apple, yesterday, and they were using an IPhone 4S just like I

Also, it seems that table indexes aren't just busted in the music app. When
I went into the Contacts app, the table index isn't working there either,
even though again, a sighted individual did confirm with me that visually,
the slider bar is there and that nothing seems visually to have changed.

Apple Accessibility has assured me that they are going to file this as a

Re: Getting photos from the iPhone

2012-09-22 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

An even easier and more automated way of doing this is to use the PhotoStream
service in iCloud. Simply go to your iCloud settings on your iPhone, make sure
that PhotoStream is enabled. Also, do the same in the iCloud pane of System
Prefs. Then in iPhoto Prefs you can tweak the settings so that only new photos
from your iPhone go up to the PhotoStream and not all new photos. Once this is
all set up, your photos taken on the iPhone will automatically be pushed up to
iCloud and pushed to your iPhoto Library. These photos are kept in the
PhotoStream directory for about 30 days but are automatically placed into your
iPhoto Library as well so if you forget to do anything with them prior to the
30 day limit, you don't lose anything.

Later...

Re: changing Command + # in Safari?

2012-09-22 Thread Alex Hall
I did it after some fiddling.
1. In Safari, press cmd-option-b for all bookmarks, or select that option
from the bookmarks menu.
2. Find the larger table; for some reason, history was selected in it for me,
but one option below history is bookmarks bar. Activate that one, then move to
the next table.
3. In this smaller table are all your files and folders inside the bookmarks
bar. Delete will erase them, or you can rename or sort them (note that I did
not try either of these two options, I just deleted).

Good luck.

2012-09-22 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Alex,

That weird. I don't seem to have a smaller table. Once I select Bookmarks
Bar, after that all I see are a search field, an Add Button, and a New
Collection button.
Cheers,

but one option below history is bookmarks bar. Activate that one, then move

 3. In this smaller table are all your files and folders inside the bookmarks

not try either of these two options, I just deleted).

 Good luck.

  Chris,

You might try completely powering your phone down and then turning it back on
to see if that fixes the problem.

Re: I O S 6 Bug: Accessibility seriously broken

2012-09-22 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I have discovered that if you are in the music app and you wish to activate
those things at the bottom light play lists etc. if you using split tapping,
you may want to split tap with the second finger a little higher up on the
screen. I know that sounds weird, but it seems to work better.

On Sep 22, 2012, at 5:02 AM, Christopher-Mark Gilland clgillan...@gmail.com
wrote:

OK. I have been playing now since last Wednesday with the new I O S 6, and I
must say, so far I like what I've seen. That was...

hear that from a visual standpoint, it is still there, and that in fact,
nothing in the whole app seems to have changed, but now, from a Voiceover
perspective, I'm being rendered to turning my rotor to headings, then one
finger flicking up and down to move letter by letter quickly through the
list. Not that there is per sey anything wrong with that method, although it
 feels extremely awquard.

Here's the other issue. I am also noticing that I may have an artist or say
a song title etc. in the list. I only visually seem to have one instance of
the item listed, however, both flicking through, as well as using the item
chooser list is yielding sometimes, upwards of literally 10 or more instances
of the same item before moving on to the next item. It's almost like I may
flick and hear Beach Boys, 10 times before I then hear Beatles. I know I
don't have 10 different artists called Beach Boys. Visually, my mother even
confirmed that it only is showing the entry one time only. It's like it's
 just getting stuck somehow.

Apple Accessibility has assured me that they are going to file this as a bug,
but you all may also want to call and let them know as well. The more people
who let them know, the more likely they'll be to fix it.

 Chris.

Re: changing Command + # in Safari?

2012-09-22 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

I get that problem sometimes, too. What I have to do is to navigate to the
splitter immediately after the search field and interact with it. Then I press
VO-left, where it usually says 0%. Then after pressing VO-right, VO usually
freezes so I have to restart it, but then the bookmarks table appears.

Don't ask why it happens in this way. But sometimes the table appears and
sometimes it does not. This has been the case since Snow Leopard.

Seriously Loving the iPhone 5

2012-09-22 Thread Brandon Olivares
I just got the iPhone 5 yesterday for my birthday. I was upgrading from an
iPhone 4, so this is the first time I've gotten to use Siri.

First of all, I love that Facebook is now more or less built in. I know this is
an IOS 6 thing, not necessarily the iPhone 5. But I like that you can update
your contacts from Facebook on your phone, so you can keep their contact info
up to date. I used to use an inaccessible app to do this occasionally, but now
it appears to be a lot easier. However, I'm not sure if it downloads new
contacts from Facebook that aren't yet on your phone, or only updates the ones
that match. I think it is the former.

I like that there's an extra row of icons per page on the homescreen since the
screen is taller. Though sometimes I have to search around for things where I
got used to their location, but now they are higher up on the screen for the
same reason.

I love the Do Not Disturb feature. I've been wanting something like this for a
while, kind of a compromise between Airplane mode and wanting some people to be
able to get through if necessary.

The new reply with message option is also really useful. Basically if you get
a call you can't or don't want to answer right now, you can select call
options and then reply with message, and select one of three predefined
replies, such as I'll call you later.

Finally, of course, I love Siri. Very useful in a lot of ways, and very funny
to at others. :) I didn't know this, but I realized that if the option is
enabled, you can simply raise the phone to your ear to talk. That includes for
dictating messages. Just raise the phone up to your ear and speak your message.
It's very convenient.

Christine and I have only been using Siri to send messages, since it is so much
faster.

I actually wish it would do more, though. For instance, I asked it to create a
list in reminders. It said to go to the reminder's app for that, so obviously
Siri knew what I was talking about. Why not just create the list? Can't be very
difficult. Same thing for completing reminders.

Anyway, just wanted to share some of the things I like about this new phone. :D

Re: Seriously Loving the iPhone 5

2012-09-22 Thread Alex Hall
Congratulations on your phone. I don't have an iPhone at all, but my mother has
a 5 and my sister a 4, and I plan to upgrade in a month or two.
Anyway, I wanted to warn you about that raise to talk feature. When it first
came out, people found that it was a pretty good battery drain, and the
recommendation was to disable it. I don't know if they made things better in
the iPhone5 and/or iOS6, but I just wanted to warn you to watch your battery if
you enable tat option.

2012-09-22 Thread Kliphton
Apple is a great company, and I applaud there effort on out of the box
accessibility, not only for the iPhone, but for the mac's also. But what
they usually do is give us things in a OS update that were already available
with a jail break. Everything you just mentioned, including siri was a
jail break first. I guess you can thank them for paying attention to the
jail break community, and giving the public what they want. But those who
have never jail broken would never know, that do not disturb has been a jail
break for almost 2 years. Siri was also, but I never used it and don't know
what the JB tweak was called. But yes, the iPhone5 is a great device, all
the way across the board!

Hmm.

I haven't seen any of this behavior running IOS 6 on an iPhone 5 and an
iPhone 4S. The table index and tabs work as they should for me.

OK. I have been playing now since last Wednesday with the new I O S 6,
and I must say, so far I like what I've seen. That was... until... I opened
the music app.

I am also noticing that I may have an artist or
say a song title etc. in the list. I only visually seem to have one
instance of the item listed, however, both flicking through, as well as
using the item chooser list is yielding sometimes, upwards of literally 10
or more instances of the same item before moving on to the next item. It's
almost like I may flick and hear Beach Boys, 10 times before I then hear
Beatles. I know I don't have 10 different artists called Beach Boys.
Visually, my mother even confirmed that it only is showing the entry one
time only. It's like it's just getting stuck somehow.

I did call Apple, yesterday, and they were using an IPhone 4S just like I
have, and were able to also reproduce identically the same problems I
described.

Also, it seems that table indexes aren't just busted in the music app.
When I went into the Contacts app, the table index isn't working there
either, even though again, a sighted individual did confirm with me that
visually, the slider bar is there and that nothing seems visually to have
changed.

Apple Accessibility has assured me that they are going to file this as a
bug, but you all may also want to call and let them know as well. The more
people who let them know, the more likely they'll be to fix it.

 Chris.

In the commands table are two columns. The first is the dot pattern, the second
the command. Once you add your c cord, find it in the table and then open the

If you go into VoiceOver Utility, under the Braille category, there is

Hi there
I have discovered that if you are in the music app and you wish to activate
those things at the bottom light play lists etc. if you using split tapping,
you may want to split tap with the second finger a little higher up on the
screen. I know that sounds weird, but it seems to work better.

generally not.

Once in whichever tab I wish to be focused on, if I try locating my table

hear that from a visual standpoint, it is still there, and that in fact,
nothing in the whole app seems to have changed, but now, from a Voiceover

finger flicking up and down to move letter by letter quickly through the
list. Not that there is per sey anything wrong with that method, although
it feels extremely awquard.

Here's the other issue. I am also noticing that I may have an artist or
say a song title etc. in the list. I only visually seem to have one
instance of the item listed, however, both flicking through, as well as
using the item chooser list is yielding sometimes, upwards of literally 10
or more instances of the same item before moving on to the next item.
It's almost like I may flick and hear Beach Boys, 10 times before I then
hear Beatles.

The
more people who let them know, the more likely they'll be to fix it.

I O S 6 update mostly glitch free, but ...

2012-09-22 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:

This morning, September 22, I updated the I O S of my I-devices from 5.xxx to I
O S 6. I used wifi.

At the end of the update process, the prompt instructed me to type in my ICloud
password. When I attempted to do this, neither of the IOS devices' screens
would respond to taps to engage the shift or numbers/symbols levels. This
meant that I had to skip this process.

I phoned Apple. Their service offers an automated, interactive tool which I
attempted to use. Things went well until the auto-service wanted my serial
number. It placed me in wait mode while I looked up my serial number.
Unfortunately, the wait mode employed music to keep the line active. The music
masked out VoiceOver prompts. The assumption in wait mode seemed to exclude
auditory feedback as a mode to acquire and transfer info. The designers didn't
think that a VoiceOver user would have to hear spoken prompts over the music.

A solution could involve a choice at the point where the wait screen came on
saying something like selecting whether to hear the music or a soft,
intermittent tone. The tone would keep the line active and would not
significantly block VoiceOver feedback while a VoiceOver user searched the
device for data or info.

I asked for an agent and got a woman who could not get her head around the
Voice Over connection at first. Apparently, apple is still training their
people to think in separate but equal mode, where VoiceOver becomes the
province of a specialized cadre who only deal with this ever so special
application. Sounds a lot like JAWS and Freedom Scientific's way of handling
things, doesn't it? I, for one, have walked in greener pastures and don't want
that non-productive, isolating thinking circulating in an Apple mindset or tech
environment.

I got escalated to what the woman called a senior person. He didn't get
disability access well. He kept saying that the odd, high-pitched tone the
VoiceOver voice now uses when the screen locks is so that blind people who are
totally blind can understand that the screen is locked. When I cleared it up
by explaining that I am totally blind and don't need to have incompetence
flouted as accessibility in the name of me being blind, he then said that the
voice went into this high-pitched, exaggerated tonal mode for the lock screen
notification because some blind people put their screens on vibrate and this
signals them. I said that when the screen is on vibrate, the voice doesn't
signal.

I think he wasn't as senior as he claimed. But he did know enough to show me
how to check the Settings/ICloud area. It seems that my problem is fixed
somehow re ICloud enrollment or upgrade, or whatever.

Have any others experienced this dramatically different lock screen tone change
when the screens of the I-devices lock? I'm using the Karen voice, I think
that's her designation.

Cheree Heppe

But for some improvements you even get a worsening back.

possible when Apple continuously improves VoiceOver. And not just a
little bit like in Mountain Lion.

We are the ones who can and should tell Apple what we need. It's good to
give them positive feedback but it's also necessary to tell them clearly
what's wrong with VoiceOver. Aspecially the american users of Macs
should insist. Because I got the feeling they are not very interested
what some VoiceOver users from France or Germany or maybe Italy might be
concerned about. I wrote so many e-mails to the accessibility team,
nothing happened. Just the standard reply that they appreciate the
feedback and will forward it to the appropriate people. Thanks a lot.

 Sorry for this negative message

Have any others experienced this dramatically different lock screen tone
change when the screens of the I-devices lock? I'm using the Karen voice, I
think that's her designation.

Just to add to this, near the top of the screen there's a total download

right of the screen above and to the right of the home button is a start app

Hi there
I'm not sure if I can totally help you because it can't remember everything
I did. However, there is a Start download button. You have to first go and
select the ones you want. Then you choose the start download. It seems to me
there was another one after that, but I can't see it in my current copy of
Navigon because I'm not doing a download at this moment. If you get it
going, each of your choices will show you how many minutes you have to go to
complete the download when you touch it. I hope this helps some.

I haven't seen any of this behavior running IOS 6 on an iPhone 5 and an

OK. I have been playing now since last Wednesday with the new I O S 6,
and I must say, so far I like what I've seen. That was... until... I
 opened
the music app.

The
 more
people who let them know, the more likely they'll be to fix it.

 Chris.

Re: solved sharing reminders. cool

2012-09-22 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
HI,
GO to reminders app:
1. Find the table containing reminder lists.
(I assume you have several and don't know how it behaves if there is only the
default reminder list).
2. Interact with table of reminder lists.
3.Find the list you want to share by VO arrowing or flicking or whatever.
4. Interact again. You should land on an edit field allowing you to rename the
list.
5. VO right and find an unlabeled button.
6. Activate it and there will be a popover sound and you can share the list
with someone else with an iCloud account using ml or ios6.
I actually labeled this button to share.

Select the contact you want, then stop interacting with the table (not that you
have to interact to work it) and vo-left. Interact with the group, then the
scroll area inside the group, and there it is, though some information is
listed outside the scroll area. You can also hit cmd-l to edit the contact,

Hi,

Thanks for the instructions. I'm not sure if that button is always available,
as it wasn't at first.

Also, I'm not sure if this was mentioned, but this is a feature only in 10.8.2,
in case anyone else is trying to do this.

3.Find the list you want to share by VO arrowing or flicking or whatever.

 5. VO right and find an unlabeled button.

Is it just me?

2012-09-22 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
I don't know, but somehow I've just hit a real low since upgrading my
Macbook to 10.8.2 and my iphone to Ios 6.
On the Macbook air, for the moment I'm primarily interested in doing
some email and web surfing. And now the bit about things not interacting
properly just makes it feel extra clunky. The email no longer
identifying unread messages makes it hard to find things I'm looking
for. Every update just seems to get a bit less slick than the previous one.
With IOS 6 on my iphone 4S, horrible! First, the sound. They've
obviously increased the highs and I can't stand to talk to someone on a
Face time call now. The interaction between VoiceOver and other sounds
is a mess. I've stopped playing Hanging with Friends because the sounds
I'm used to hearing are not there and things are so sluggish. In my
prowling around, I've found articles about interapp audio, but don't
know if there's a relationship here. But I'm beginning to think there's
something different about multi-block threading or something. But the
way application priorities are set just may be messing up those of us
with VoiceOver. I also wonder if they have EQ'd sound for the new iphone
or something, but this is not good. Like I said, today for some reason
I'm kind of feeling like stuffing these two devices in my closet. I'm a
bit done with seeing devices junked up with a bunch of stuff I don't
want and getting poorer quality on the things I do.
I am going to send in a report about VoiceOver and Safari, again because
one would think that a developer would notice this and someone would try
and figure out the problem. It did work in Lion, after all. Same with
the unread status in mail. Anyway, going to take a break and do
something else for awhile. But I will be sending feedback to Apple.
Thanks for letting me spout off here. Much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, you can delete the default bookmark buttons. VO over the button

 Hello,

If you open your bookmarks and go to the item called Bookmarks Bar

command+number. Simply reorder those in the order you desire.

 Hi all,

I'm just wondering whether it's possible to change the sites that

that to another site of my choosing?

Ah, OK, that does make sense. I hate those four-finger commands. lol

I prefer to press 2 keys compared to 4. Especially when all 4 happen to fall

At the risk of sounding stupid, what's the advantage of creating a VO

So, you use the native command, or you have set up a different one that
you use? It's not a huge deal now that I know what to do, but if there's
a way to keep it from happening, I would do that.

 Hmm,

I've never had this happened. Maybe its do to the way I'm navigating to
the tables? I press VO command T to jump to the tables. I've actually
set up a keyboard command for this.

 Hi,

I get that problem sometimes, too. What I have to do is to navigate to
the splitter immediately after the search field and interact with it.
Then I press VO-left, where it usually says 0%. Then after pressing
VO-right, VO usually freezes so I have to restart it, but then the
 bookmarks table appears.

Don't ask why it happens in this way. But sometimes the table appears
and sometimes it does not. This has been the case since Snow Leopard.

 Hi Alex,

That weird. I don't seem to have a smaller table. Once I select
Bookmarks Bar, after that all I see are a search field, an Add Button,
 and a New Collection button.

I did it after some fiddling.
 1. In Safari, press cmd-option-b for all bookmarks, or select that
 option from the bookmarks menu.
 2. Find the larger table; for some reason, history was selected in it
for me, but one option below history is bookmarks bar. Activate that
one, then move to the next table.
 3. In this smaller table are all your files and folders inside the
bookmarks bar. Delete will erase them, or you can rename or sort them
(note that I did not try either of these two options, I just deleted).

 Good luck.

The first thing I want to know is how in the world did you manage to get IOS
