Virtual Machine/ Bootcamp advice

2013-11-30 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List,I am new to the macworld.
How easy is it to set up a windows virtual machine using fusion. How do you
get windows installed. Load the CD? When you first install windows how do
you interact with it without a screen reader in order to get jaws or nvda
installed? Is linux easier in this regard because orca comes with the os?
What are the pros and cons of using fusion vs bootcamp? I have a 4 GB
macbook air on the way and am trying to research before it arrives. I have
heardpeople talking about giving 1gb ram to windows does this mean all the
time when the machine is on even if you are not using windows? Does a vm
degrade OSx performance?

Many Thanks, Lee

Microsoft Office for Mac

2013-11-30 Thread Lee Jones
Dear List, Does Microsoft Office for Mac work with voice over? On the apple
website there is a list of applications that have been coded for
accessibility. Does this mean that applications that are not on the list
will not work. Does apple have to specifically code applications to work
with voice over? On IOS developers can make aps accessible without them
being coded by apple.

Many Thanks, Lee

It’s not up to Apple to code apps for Voice Over. That’s up to the app

Pretty easy. You just give it the location of your dvd, or the location of a
Windows ISO (I think that would work) and off it goes. It will look for Windows
install disks when you create a new vm, though, so it should be as simple as
choosing your disk and pressing enter.

How do you get windows installed. Load the CD?
Again, point Fusion to your Windows install disk, if it doesn't pick it up
automatically (which it should).

When you first install windows how do you interact with it without a screen
reader in order to get jaws or nvda installed? Is linux easier in this regard
because orca comes with the os?
You don't. Windows is useless to you until you get a screen reader, so you'll
need sighted help initially. There is a new project that bundles NVDA with
Windows to offer an accessible installer, but I don't have the link right now.
Google should find it pretty easily though.

What are the pros and cons of using fusion vs bootcamp? I have a 4 GB

Bootcamp runs Windows natively, with full system resources, but you have to
restart the computer to switch operating systems. Fusion lets you run Windows
like it was just another app, giving you both systems at once. Plus, you can
back up or transfer the virtual machine holding your Windows if you want to, so
if you get a new machine you can just bring your Windows install, with all your
programs and settings, over to the new machine. Also, Bootcamp requires you to
partition your drive, so you lose a lot of drive space. A vm will grow as
necessary, taking up only as much room as it needs.

I have heardpeople talking about giving 1gb ram to windows does this mean all
 the

 degrade OSx performance?
No, the ram used for Windows is only in use when the vm is running. When it is
shut down, or Fusion is closed, that ram goes back to the Mac. The only
degradation you should experience is the loss of some processor use and ram,
and that only while Windows is on, but most people don't notice it. I am having
issues right now, but that is probably because I am running Windows in a
different way than most.

Hello.
The list provided on Apple's website contains just a few of the apps that are

Most apps, though not listed on Apple's website, will be accessible fully are
partially.
This applies even to ios apps. Microsoft office for Mac is not accessible.
However, there is an alternative called I work by Apple. It is reasonably
accessible.
Hope this helps

Re: Anyone know of a bluetooth earpiece that works with Downcast

2013-11-30 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey Nicholas,

Thanks. I think the Bose are kind of expensive, but maybe you pay for what you
spend which could be why the Plantronic keeps cutting in and out with Downcast.
When you get a chance please do let me know the other pair that works with the
controls, as those do sound interesting to me. The Plantronic seem to work
great with everything except Downcast, as it does work with Siri and if you
have it turned on you can answer a call by just saying answer which is cool.
Thanks,

 HI Bryan,
I have two that work well with Downcast. At least they certainly don't cut in

something like that. It's a small earpiece that just fits in one ear. The
sound quality is good, it's highly portable, but the controls don't work for
stopping/starting playback, skipping forward/back etcetera. It does have
controls for answering and hanging up calls though, and for Siri.
I don't have the details of the other headphones here—I'll have to give them
to you when I'm on my other Mac. They are on-ear design, and have controls
for starting/stopping playback and skipping forward/back.

Re: Looking for Mac RSS reader

2013-11-30 Thread Brian Fischler
If you are looking to sync across iPhones, iPads, etc than Newsify is
fantastic. I am not sure if they have a mac client as since the demise of
Google Reader I stopped using RSS on the Mac and solely use it on the iPhone. I
got tired of Lire as I have a lot of feeds and I know it only allows 5000
articles and was having some issues with parsing certain feeds. At least
Newsify has 20,000 limits, and since I started playing around with it a lot
more I have come to really love it. I believe it uses Readability to sync
across devices, and it does a good job on my iPhone 4S and 5S.

Using the BrailleNote Apex as a Bluetooth keyboard

2013-11-30 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello everyone,

I am wondering if it is possible to use a querty BrailleNote Apex as a
bluetooth keyboard for my iPhone. I would like to use this combination of
equipment to take extensive notes at lectures. Here are my questions:

1. Is it possible to invoke VoiceOVer commands from the querty version of the
BrailleNote Apex, and would my iPhone recognize these commands in the same way
that my MacBook does?

2. Are there decent text-editing programs for the iPhone that work well with
VoiceOver?

3. Would it be easier to accomplish the aforementioned task using an iPad in
conjunction with the BrailleNote Apex?

My thanks to all of you.

Mike

Re: fusion and windows iso

An ISO is a type of disc image that a CD or DVD is made from. Some applications
allow you to mount them directly without burning them to a disc. Many websites
offer downloads of ISo files to burn onto discs, such as Linux operating
systems, movies and such.

Re: Using the BrailleNote Apex as a Bluetooth keyboard

2013-11-30 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello Mike.

As far as I know, you can’t use the qwerty Apex to do all voice Over commands.

Last year, my employer purchased the Apex Braille keyboard for me as I did ask
if the qwerty keyboard could do Voice Over commands. Human Ware said that the
qwerty Apex was not as good as the braille Apex as you could not do some of the
commands for Voice Over on an I phone. So I went for the Braille Apex.

I don’t know if this has changed.

Re: Using the BrailleNote Apex as a Bluetooth keyboard

2013-11-30 Thread Mike Busboom
Hello Kawal,

I really appreciate your response. I guess I could always just buy an Apple
keyboard and do without Braille for these editing sessions. Obviously, I will
contact Humanware to see if the querty Apex can now be used in the situation I
described. They did release a new version of Keysoft recently, but I haven't
updated my unit yet.

Kind regards and thanks again,

Mike

Re: fusion and windows iso

2013-11-30 Thread Chris Blouch
I had not heard of MS giving out ISO images. Would have been nice to
know. From my reading of various forums and such I needed to purchase a
full Windows 8.1 installer to make a virtual machine and that meant
buying what they call a System Builder OEM disk. I ended up purchasing
an actual DVD of Windows 8.1 for $97 from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3ZN2W0/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8psc=1

and then made my own ISO from that using terminal and dd:

dd if=/dev/disk2 of=~/myCD.iso bs=2048 conv=sync,notrunc

Then I could use the myCD.iso to install Windows 8.1. The CD came with a
printed activation code.

Re: Microsoft Office for Mac

2013-11-30 Thread Chris Blouch
Generally if an application uses standard controls they inherit most of
the accessibility so that a button will identify itself as a button and
and be operable though assistive technology. The developer would need to
provide a label to describe the button but everything else is already
hooked up. In the case of MS products they have gone the route of
custom-writing all their own widgets. This makes it easier to make
things work cross-platform but throws away all the native control
accessibility. Microsoft then re-implements all the accessibility using
the MSAA and iAccessible APIs for Windows but hasn't bothered
re-connecting the controls to the Apple accessibility APIs. In other
words, if somebody were to port iAccessible to OSX there might be a
chance the Office would be accessible, but who would do that? Apple
already has a perfectly good (and some might say better) Accessibility
API, so for now it's an impasse between two worldviews.

taking forever. I had to delete a bunch of items in Windows so that it would
fit on my Mac partition, but I finally got it down from 191gb to 58gb. That
leads me to the question: once this is done, can I just format the Windows
partition to get that space back? Will the imported vm be totally independent
of the partition, or will formatting cause problems?

On a side note, how do I reclaim the Bootcamp space, assuming I can? I want to
basically erase it and merge it back into the Mac's partition, creating a
single drive once again, but without re-installing the Mac or anything. Is this
doable?

Have a great day,

Re: fusion and windows iso

2013-11-30 Thread Yolanda
It has been a while since I have done it, but during the ISO process,
you get a key. I was setting up someone's machine for them and they did
not have internet, so I chose that option from the choices, and the key
was provided on screen.

Hi,
I assume you get the .iso from microsoft as they appear to be free downloads.
Do you need some sort of authorization key to activate it? If so, where can I
locate it. I still have a pc running windows 7.
Thanks,
Don

Hey Kaitlyn. When I installed Windows 7 onto my Mac, I just told Fusion
to use the Iso file that was located in my downloads folder. So the
answer to your question is no, you don't have to burn it onto a DVD.

Re: Anyone know of a bluetooth earpiece that works with Downcast

2013-11-30 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi Bryan,
The other bluetooth headset I have is called Creative WP-350 Headset. It's a
random headset I bought in a shop one night—not sure how common it is. It
doesn't sound as fancy as your Plantronics, but it works well with Downcast and
certainly doesn't cut out. They're really comfortable for on-ear design
headphones too. The controls on the headset are on/off, answer/hang
up/play/pause/Siri, volume up and down, and next and previous track. It charges
by USB.
Cheers,
Nic

Re: Looking for Mac RSS reader

2013-11-30 Thread Nicholas Parsons
You might also like to try ReadKit.
• It can sync with plenty of services, e.g. FeedWrangler;
• Just press G to read full text of articles in Readability mode;
• It has customisable short cuts for all popular sharing and read later
services – e.g. I just press Command-Shift-D to add to Apple Reading List,
Control-T to tweet and control-F to share on Facebook;
• It's available through the Mac App Store and is currently 70% off.

I then use Mr Reader on my iPad—it's brilliant, even better than NewsRack.

Hi list.
The the google search app on IOS is not giving voice feedback when I
use google now. for instance, if I ask google now the weather, it
shows up a card but does not speak the result. Is this feature not
available on google now for IOS or is there any setting that i have to
toggle?
Thanks in advance.

Re: question about importing Bootcamp vm, and erasing Bootcamp partition

2013-11-30 Thread Terje Strømberg
To erase a bootcamp partition use the boot camp assistant. CMD + Space, type
Boot Camp, clickcontinue, make sure the only checkmark is erase/delete Windows
7 or newer.click continue, click restore.

Take care

Re: Microsoft Office for Mac

2013-11-30 Thread Mike Arrigo
Unfortunately, Microsoft Office on the mac is not accesible, Microsoft refuses
to fix these issues. Your best option is to use the Iwork applications, which
will open and save Microsoft Office documents.

Dear List, Does Microsoft Office for Mac work with voice over? On the apple

accessibility. Does this mean that applications that are not on the list
will not work. Does apple have to specifically code applications to work with
voice over? On IOS developers can make aps accessible without them being
 “coded” by apple.

 Many Thanks, Lee
