Virtual Machine/ Bootcamp advice
Dear List,I am new to the macworld. How easy is it to set up a windows virtual machine using fusion. How do you get windows installed. Load the CD? When you first install windows how do you interact with it without a screen reader in order to get jaws or nvda installed? Is linux easier in this regard because orca comes with the os? What are the pros and cons of using fusion vs bootcamp? I have a 4 GB macbook air on the way and am trying to research before it arrives. I have heardpeople talking about giving 1gb ram to windows does this mean all the time when the machine is on even if you are not using windows? Does a vm degrade OSx performance? Microsoft Office for Mac
Dear List, Does Microsoft Office for Mac work with voice over? On the apple website there is a list of applications that have been coded for accessibility. Does this mean that applications that are not on the list will not work. Does apple have to specifically code applications to work with voice over? On IOS developers can make aps accessible without them being coded by apple. Many Thanks, Lee -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Microsoft Office for Mac
It’s not up to Apple to code apps for Voice Over. That’s up to the app developer. In Microsoft’s case, forget it. Sent from my Mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind built-in! Bootcamp runs Windows natively, with full system resources, but you have to restart the computer to switch operating systems. Fusion lets you run Windows like it was just another app, giving you both systems at once. Plus, you can back up or transfer the virtual machine holding your Windows if you want to, so if you get a new machine you can just bring your Windows install, with all your programs and settings, over to the new machine. Also, Bootcamp requires you to partition your drive, so you lose a lot of drive space. A vm will grow as necessary, taking up only as much room as it needs. I have heardpeople talking about giving 1gb ram to windows does this mean all the time when the machine is on even if you are not using windows? Does a vm degrade OSx performance? No, the ram used for Windows is only in use when the vm is running. When it is shut down, or Fusion is closed, that ram goes back to the Mac. The only degradation you should experience is the loss of some processor use and ram, and that only while Windows is on, but most people don't notice it. I am having issues right now, but that is probably because I am running Windows in a different way than most. just to add to this.. I am totally blind and have never used sighted assistance to set up my vm. After windows is loaded for the first time, I’ve either used narrator to go get nvda, used my window eyes dvd to load WE, or installed nvda off of a usb stick. hope this helps! only one thing I would add here - read the fusion help system voraciously before doing anything. It always helps to hear what the manufacturer has to say about the matter. Hello. The list provided on Apple's website contains just a few of the apps that are accessible. Most apps, though not listed on Apple's website, will be accessible fully are partially. This applies even to ios apps. Microsoft office for Mac is not accessible. However, there is an alternative called I work by Apple. It is reasonably accessible. Re: Anyone know of a bluetooth earpiece that works with Downcast
Hey Nicholas, Thanks. I think the Bose are kind of expensive, but maybe you pay for what you spend which could be why the Plantronic keeps cutting in and out with Downcast. When you get a chance please do let me know the other pair that works with the controls, as those do sound interesting to me. The Plantronic seem to work great with everything except Downcast, as it does work with Siri and if you have it turned on you can answer a call by just saying answer which is cool. The sound quality is good, it's highly portable, but the controls don't work for stopping/starting playback, skipping forward/back etcetera. It does have controls for answering and hanging up calls though, and for Siri. I don't have the details of the other headphones here—I'll have to give them to you when I'm on my other Mac. Re: Looking for Mac RSS reader
If you are looking to sync across iPhones, iPads, etc than Newsify is fantastic. I am not sure if they have a mac client as since the demise of Google Reader I stopped using RSS on the Mac and solely use it on the iPhone. I got tired of Lire as I have a lot of feeds and I know it only allows 5000 articles and was having some issues with parsing certain feeds. At least Newsify has 20,000 limits, and since I started playing around with it a lot more I have come to really love it. I believe it uses Readability to sync across devices, and it does a good job on my iPhone 4S and 5S. Using the BrailleNote Apex as a Bluetooth keyboard
Hello everyone, I am wondering if it is possible to use a querty BrailleNote Apex as a bluetooth keyboard for my iPhone. I would like to use this combination of equipment to take extensive notes at lectures. Here are my questions: 1. Is it possible to invoke VoiceOVer commands from the querty version of the BrailleNote Apex, and would my iPhone recognize these commands in the same way that my MacBook does? 2. Are there decent text-editing programs for the iPhone that work well with VoiceOver? 3. Would it be easier to accomplish the aforementioned task using an iPad in conjunction with the BrailleNote Apex? My thanks to all of you. Re: fusion and windows iso
An ISO is a type of disc image that a CD or DVD is made from. Some applications allow you to mount them directly without burning them to a disc. Many websites offer downloads of ISo files to burn onto discs, such as Linux operating systems, movies and such. Hth, Teresa On the other hand, there are different fingers. Re: Using the BrailleNote Apex as a Bluetooth keyboard
Hello Mike. As far as I know, you can’t use the qwerty Apex to do all voice Over commands. Last year, my employer purchased the Apex Braille keyboard for me as I did ask if the qwerty keyboard could do Voice Over commands. Human Ware said that the qwerty Apex was not as good as the braille Apex as you could not do some of the commands for Voice Over on an I phone. So I went for the Braille Apex. I don’t know if this has changed. Kawal. Re: Using the BrailleNote Apex as a Bluetooth keyboard
Hello Kawal, I really appreciate your response. I guess I could always just buy an Apple keyboard and do without Braille for these editing sessions. Obviously, I will contact Humanware to see if the querty Apex can now be used in the situation I described. They did release a new version of Keysoft recently, but I haven't updated my unit yet. Does Abbyy FineReader Express really have two Text Conversion Buttons?
hi. i’ve been wondering about this for awhile. in the Quick Tasks Window i find what VO says is two buttons labeled “convert to text”. Re: fusion and windows iso
I had not heard of MS giving out ISO images. Would have been nice to know. From my reading of various forums and such I needed to purchase a full Windows 8.1 installer to make a virtual machine and that meant buying what they call a System Builder OEM disk. I ended up purchasing an actual DVD of Windows 8.1 for $97 from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F3ZN2W0/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8psc=1 and then made my own ISO from that using terminal and dd: dd if=/dev/disk2 of=~/myCD.iso bs=2048 conv=sync, notrunc Then I could use the myCD.iso to install Windows 8.1. The CD came with a printed activation code. CB On 11/30/13 6:53 PM, don bishop wrote: Hi, I assume you get the .iso from microsoft as they appear to be free downloads. Re: Microsoft Office for Mac
Generally if an application uses standard controls they inherit most of the accessibility so that a button will identify itself as a button and and be operable though assistive technology. The developer would need to provide a label to describe the button but everything else is already hooked up. In the case of MS products they have gone the route of custom-writing all their own widgets. This makes it easier to make things work cross-platform but throws away all the native control accessibility. Microsoft then re-implements all the accessibility using the MSAA and iAccessible APIs for Windows but hasn't bothered re-connecting the controls to the Apple accessibility APIs. In other words, if somebody were to port iAccessible to OSX there might be a chance the Office would be accessible, but who would do that? Apple already has a perfectly good (and some might say better) Accessibility API, so for now it's an impasse between two worldviews. CB On 11/30/13 11:43 AM, venky...@gmail.com wrote: Hello. question about importing Bootcamp vm, and erasing Bootcamp partition
Hi all, I'm in the process of importing my Bootcamp partition into a new vm, and it's taking forever. I had to delete a bunch of items in Windows so that it would fit on my Mac partition, but I finally got it down from 191gb to 58gb. That leads me to the question: once this is done, can I just format the Windows partition to get that space back? Will the imported vm be totally independent of the partition, or will formatting cause problems? On a side note, how do I reclaim the Bootcamp space, assuming I can? I want to basically erase it and merge it back into the Mac's partition, creating a single drive once again, but without re-installing the Mac or anything. Is this doable?
