Yes, I am saying that it is accessible and usable. I only had trouble of one page, and I figured that out. I hope TurboTax for 2015 is as good as this one. Re: Time Machine to the rescue
I have no permanently connected hard drives other than the SSD in my MBA. periodically I do a SuperDuper backup to an external drive. Am I correct in recalling that one can retrieve a file from a superDuper backup by opening the sparse bundle and simply navigating and copying the file? In that case, I could simply retrieve the VM from a SuperDuper clone, yes? I have excluded the VM from time machine backup, thanks for the heads up. Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display
Hi Erik, Yeah, it looks really interesting! I have a HIMS BrailleEdge, and I like it a lot. But there are some features on the Vario that make it look interesting - the ability to read PDFs and the ability to act as an independent drive when connected to the computer. I also find the hand positioning on the Braille Edge kind of awkward, so am curious about the physical layout of the Vario. Re: can't find unread mail messages
Hello Christina, It sounds as though you have the preview pane visible. This means that when you navigate to a message, it opens automatically, so you never see an unread message. This is why I always disable the preview pane. If you read your messages by doing VO-j to get to the body, you have the preview pane visible. Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display
You can read PDF on theBrailleEdge I think. I know you can on their other products. I do love the VarioUltra but it is taking a very long time to resolve its issues. Battery, no direct support from Apple yet but there are work arounds, and the issue of freezing and losing your work in the notetaker are but a few problems that stil are outstanding. When these are fixed and apple finally supports it properly I'll be able to highly recommendit. Even with the problems, I do like it, but just to be aware that all's not well with the VarioUltra just yet. On 3/4/15, Donna Goodin doniado...@me.com wrote: Thanks for this, Doug, it's good to know. Yes, this is true, I do have and juse the classic view with preview pane. That isn’t my problem though. :) My fault and all but I have tons of emails but I have unread messages in my inbox. Thanks for this, Doug, it's good to know. One question, it wasn't clear from Baum's website whether the Vario connects as a display to the Mac and the iPhone, or just the iPhone. Action Completed Sound Effect in iTunes
I've been helping a friend add songs to a playlist but something seems to be askew on her Mac Mini. I've been coaching her in using the Search Music Library for songs she wants to add to her specific playlist; when she selects the desired song from the resulting list she is placed into her quite extensive music library (over 23,000 items) on the line for that song -- so far, so good -- she then interacts with the My Music table, opens the context menu, selects the Add To Playlist menu item and moves into the ensuing sub-menu and selects the specific playlist. Here's the issue; when I do this, I get a pleasant sound effect confirming that when I press RETURN the song has indeed been added to my desired playlist -- she does not. I had her open the VoiceOver Utility, select the Sounds Category and make certain the Mute Sound Effects checkbox is not checked. It was not so I advised her to check and uncheck it just in case something was awry in the configuration data schemes -- this did not help. I've since opened the System Preferences dialogs for iTunes hoping to find some type of setting that might silence that Added To Playlist confirmation sound effect but I've had no success. Can anybody offer some suggestions or thoughts as to why the confirmation sound effect for successfully adding an item to a playlist is functioning on my Mac Mini and not on hers? We both have 2.6 GB Mac Minis running Yosemite. There just has to be some setting that I have enabled or she has disabled, other sound effects are working on her Mac. - Bill Leader Dog Holland - Clothes make the man. Thanks all for the clarification, and I will stop this here, because this has nothing to do with the topic of the list. How ever just to finish, I think that this is quite disappointing, there should be at least a property that a user could change in order for a specific content to be stored locally or not, or, we should be at list able to move iCloud drive to an other location as we do with dropbox. thanks again! Re: face time problem on mac
Hi, There are a couple of things that could be going on. First, it’s possible that your router has some of the necessary protocols blocked within its firewall settings. but, before diving into that sort of thing, I’d try turning the feature off on your iPhone, then back on and do the same on your Mac. I’ve seen some situations where it didn’t connect properly on the initial setup but after resetting it in this sort of manner, things began to work. Also, do you know if FaceTime calls work properly on your Mac when not using this feature? Later... Competition for the Focus 14. About that price range and a 14-cell display with no other features except that it will pair with more than one BT device like the VarioUltra. Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display
It's a prototype HIMS braille display which has 14 cells and can apparently connect to six devices at once (1 USB and 5 bluetooth). It's not for sale yet and was shown at ATIA in prototype form only. Blind Bargains did a podcast about it last month, which is the only reason I know anything about it. apple mail issue
Hi All, I have noticed with apple mail, often it doesn't show me the latest emails right away. I know that it has to download the headers, but that doesn't take that long. I have a friend that just got a mbp13, and I've sent him 4 emails today, but it doesn't show any email until yesterday morning. Is there a way to get mail to show emails faster? A command or setting? Hi, The Airport Extreme works perfect with this configuration, so that’s not your issue. Yes, in FaceTime on your Mac, in Preferences, uncheck the Cellular Calls checkbox and also disable it on your iPhone. Shutdown then restart your iPhone. Re: apple mail issue
If Mail simply stops checking for new messages, simply quit it and re-launch it. This happens every so often for me, and a few seconds to open it again seems to solve it. Scripting (was: Talking Dashboard Probably Going Mavericks Plus Only)
Mostly, the scripts rely on shell commands. For instance, I ask the top command for CPU information, and the memstat command for ram details, and iReg for battery, and so on. Once I get the results, I grab the bits I need, and return those (all this happens in the Get Info.scpt file, which is why it *must* be int the same folder as the scripts). Then, I have the raw information, like the amount of ram or the battery level, and I give it back to the script that asked for it. The script then gives all that raw data, plus the template, to a couple functions in Utilities.scpt (another required file). The raw data is paired up with keywords, those keywords are sorted and searched for, any any that are present are replaced. This is how $minutes turns into 15, for instance. Once the template has been populated, the complete string is given back to the script you ran, which asks Utilities.scpt to speak it. The speaking part checks if VoiceOver is running; it tells VO to say the string if it is, and tells the default system voice to do so if it's not. Re: Time Machine to the rescue
I use Time Machine to back up my virtual machines, but not from the active Virtual Machines folder, which I exclude in the preferences for speed. This is what VMWare recommends and it is a very good idea, because you don’t want Time Machine to back up a machine that is being used; you will end up with ruined backups, and waste a lot of disk space on your Time Capsule. The idea is to have a separate folder which Time Machine does back up, which I will remember to copy my healthy virtual machines into, when they are in a known-good condition. In my experience, this actually works more reliably than snapshots. I have the active folder on my SSD, for speed, and the snapshots on my hard disk, which Time Machine will take a copy of. Re: Time Machine to the rescue
Yes I like this strategy. The only reason I don't employ it is that I find I'm a bit pushed for space on the Macbook Air, and the VM files can get pretty large. For those without that problem, it's a great idea. Actually, iCloud does store copies of your files on the local Mac. Copies have to be kept locally so that synchronization can occur if you go without a network connection and then are connected again. It keeps all files up to date on the local system. Re: Safari can't handle TaxActOnline.com
Hi there You are lucky if you got Internet Explorer to work, although some people on this list have gotten Tax Act to work. When I tried them, I not only crashed Safari, but I crashed JAWS for Windows three times. I have finally decided that I do not like doing my taxes online where their computer can hang up on me if I take too long or they have set up something stupid on their web site that makes them partially or totally inaccessible. With Tax Act, this seems to be especially bad if I put in something and then had to go back and edit it. When I used Tax Act, I was more successful with the iPhone. It was better than using either Windows or the Mac for me. I have said before on this list, I really liked Turbo Tax for 2014. If you haven’t already finished with your taxes, you might want to try it. The thing I liked was that I could take as long as I wanted, which was a good thing since I had to keep looking up information. Also, it was easier to go back and change something. Turbo Tax for 2014 is written by the same company, but it is excellent this year. You can electronic file also when you get done. when I tried using Tax Act and called their customer service people, they refused to talk to me unless I paid them first. Since the issue was accessibility, I told them to forget it. Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display
Well I love my VarioUltra, but I have to say it has very major problems which Baum doesn't seem to be resolving very quickly at all. They've had significant difficulty shipping products at all and now the current firmware version locks up and requires frequently resetting the device. I know the product is new and new products have growing pains, but I wouldn't consider ordering this device until those of us who have it can report that it's stable. I hope it's very soon because it has the potential to be a truly fabulous device. I've been totally shocked by Baum's seemingly cluelessness because it's not consistent with my previous experience. So definitely take a look at it, but don't plan to invest until they do some serious work and until they get production in order.
