Re: Time Machine to the rescue

2015-03-04 Thread Phil Halton
I have no permanently connected hard drives other than the SSD in my MBA.
periodically I do a SuperDuper backup to an external drive. Am I correct in
recalling that one can retrieve a file from a superDuper backup by opening the
sparse bundle and simply navigating and copying the file?
In that case, I could simply retrieve the VM from a SuperDuper clone, yes?

I have excluded the VM from time machine backup, thanks for the heads up.

The idea is to have a separate folder which Time Machine does back up, which
I will remember to copy my healthy virtual machines into, when they are in a
known-good condition. In my experience, this actually works more reliably
than snapshots. I have the active folder on my SSD, for speed, and the

The drawback of this approach is that one is strongly incentivized to keep
changes to a minimum, and thus VMs don’t grow organically, but are
frustratingly lean and minimal. There’s a cost to everything. :)

Hi Erik,

Yeah, it looks really interesting! I have a HIMS BrailleEdge, and I like it a

the ability to read PDFs and the ability to act as an independent drive when

Hello Christina,

It sounds as though you have the preview pane visible. This means that when you
navigate to a message, it opens automatically, so you never see an unread
message. This is why I always disable the preview pane.

If you read your messages by doing VO-j to get to the body, you have the
preview pane visible.

Cheers,

Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display

2015-03-04 Thread Deb Lewis
You can read PDF on theBrailleEdge I think. I know you can on their
other products. I do love the VarioUltra but it is taking a very long
time to resolve its issues. Battery, no direct support from Apple yet
but there are work arounds, and the issue of freezing and losing your
work in the notetaker are but a few problems that stil are
outstanding. When these are fixed and apple finally supports it
properly I'll be able to highly recommendit. Even with the problems, I
do like it, but just to be aware that all's not well with the
VarioUltra just yet.

Yes to both. Go to audacity.sourceforge.net to download it. You'll mostly use
shortcut keys and the menus; the visual interface is marginally usable at best.
Once you know those keys, though, you'll do fine.

Action Completed Sound Effect in iTunes

2015-03-04 Thread Bill Gallik
I've been helping a friend add songs to a playlist but something seems to be
askew on her Mac Mini. I've been coaching her in using the Search Music
Library for songs she wants to add to her specific playlist; when she
selects the desired song from the resulting list she is placed into her
quite extensive music library (over 23,000 items) on the line for that
song -- so far, so good -- she then interacts with the My Music table,
opens the context menu, selects the Add To Playlist menu item and moves
into the ensuing sub-menu and selects the specific playlist. Here's the
issue; when I do this, I get a pleasant sound effect confirming that when I
press RETURN the song has indeed been added to my desired playlist -- she
does not.

I had her open the VoiceOver Utility, select the Sounds Category and make
certain the Mute Sound Effects checkbox is not checked. It was not so I
advised her to check and uncheck it just in case something was awry in the
configuration data schemes -- this did not help.

I've since opened the System Preferences dialogs for iTunes hoping to find
some type of setting that might silence that Added To Playlist
confirmation sound effect but I've had no success.

Can anybody offer some suggestions or thoughts as to why the confirmation
sound effect for successfully adding an item to a playlist is functioning on
my Mac Mini and not on hers? We both have 2.6 GB Mac Minis running
Yosemite.

There just has to be some setting that I have enabled or she has disabled,
other sound effects are working on her Mac.

Re: iCloud drive and hard drive space?

2015-03-04 Thread Daniela Rubio
Thanks all for the clarification, and I will stop this here, because this has
nothing to do with the topic of the list. How ever just to finish, I think that
this is quite disappointing, there should be at least a property that a user
could change in order for a specific content to be stored locally or not, or,
we should be at list able to move iCloud drive to an other location as we do
with dropbox.
thanks again!

Re: face time problem on mac

2015-03-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

There are a couple of things that could be going on. First, it’s possible that
your router has some of the necessary protocols blocked within its firewall
settings. but, before diving into that sort of thing, I’d try turning the
feature off on your iPhone, then back on and do the same on your Mac. I’ve
seen some situations where it didn’t connect properly on the initial setup but
after resetting it in this sort of manner, things began to work. Also, do you
know if FaceTime calls work properly on your Mac when not using this feature?

Competition for the Focus 14. About that price range and a 14-cell
display with no other features except that it will pair with more than
one BT device like the VarioUltra. I understand the economics of

too few cells and the Beetle will have even less of them.

It's a prototype HIMS braille display which has 14 cells and can apparently
connect to six devices at once (1 USB and 5 bluetooth). It's not for sale yet
and was shown at ATIA in prototype form only.
Blind Bargains did a podcast about it last month, which is the only reason I
know anything about it.

apple mail issue

2015-03-04 Thread Juan Hernandez
Hi All,

I have noticed with apple mail, often it doesn't show me the latest emails
right away. I know that it has to download the headers, but that doesn't
take that long. I have a friend that just got a mbp13, and I've sent him 4
emails today, but it doesn't show any email until yesterday morning.

Is there a way to get mail to show emails faster? A command or setting?

Best,

Re: face time problem on mac

2015-03-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

The Airport Extreme works perfect with this configuration, so that’s not your
issue. Yes, in FaceTime on your Mac, in Preferences, uncheck the Cellular
Calls checkbox and also disable it on your iPhone. Shutdown then restart your
iPhone. Quit out of FaceTime on your Mac , then go back in and re-enable it.
Then re-enable the feature on your iPhone last. Hopefully, that does the trick.

turning the feature off on your iPhone, then back on and do the same on your

Scripting (was: Talking Dashboard Probably Going Mavericks Plus Only)

2015-03-04 Thread Alex Hall
Mostly, the scripts rely on shell commands. For instance, I ask the top
command for CPU information, and the memstat command for ram details, and
iReg for battery, and so on. Once I get the results, I grab the bits I need,
and return those (all this happens in the Get Info.scpt file, which is why it
*must* be int the same folder as the scripts).

Then, I have the raw information, like the amount of ram or the battery level,
and I give it back to the script that asked for it. The script then gives all
that raw data, plus the template, to a couple functions in Utilities.scpt
(another required file). The raw data is paired up with keywords, those
keywords are sorted and searched for, any any that are present are replaced.
This is how $minutes turns into 15, for instance. Once the template has been
populated, the complete string is given back to the script you ran, which asks
Utilities.scpt to speak it. The speaking part checks if VoiceOver is running;
it tells VO to say the string if it is, and tells the default system voice to
do so if it's not.

 Hi all,
Most of you know about what I (rather un-creatively) call Talking Dashboard,
a set of Applescript files that give you access to information. There's a
time/date one, one for battery, one for current wifi status, and more. Most
of you also know I've wanted to add a script for upcoming reminders and
calendar events, but I could never get it working right, and I didn't like
that it would always force Reminders or Calendar to launch.

Well, the good news is that I can overcome both problems (most likely, but
no promises) by accessing the EKEventStore through Cocoa. If that's Greek to
you, the bottom line is that I can probably do this, but it requires OS10.9
or later, maybe even 10.10 or later. I'm on 10.10, but I'm wondering how
many people this would affect? Existing scripts would continue to work, but
if I find a faster/easier way to do what they currently do that also uses
Cocoa, I'll do it. Plus, I could probably revamp and expand the template
system, since I would no longer need to use my own hacked-together solution
but could instead use a real, Cocoa-based one. I'd probably archive what I
have and put the existing scripts in a subfolder, so those who can't run the
new ones don't need to, but I would no longer support them.

So, basically, if you use Talking Dashboard, on which version(s) of OS X do
 you use it?

The Airport Extreme works perfect with this configuration, so that’s not your

your iPhone. Quit out of FaceTime on your Mac , then go back in and
re-enable it. Then re-enable the feature on your iPhone last. Hopefully,
 that does the trick.

turning the feature off on your iPhone, then back on and do the same on your

Hi Alex
I am under Yosemite, and have the latest update. I know how to use the time and
date file, and I know how to use the battery one. This is going to sound like a
really dumb question, but could you give me and some others who are sort of in
first grade when it comes to Apple script some idea of what commands make the
others work? Or, is that all in the read me file that I read a long time ago?

Well, the good news is that I can overcome both problems (most likely, but no

people this would affect? Existing scripts would continue to work, but if I
find a faster/easier way to do what they currently do that also uses Cocoa,
I'll do it. Plus, I could probably revamp and expand the template system,
since I would no longer need to use my own hacked-together solution but could
instead use a real, Cocoa-based one. I'd probably archive what I have and put
the existing scripts in a subfolder, so those who can't run the new ones

So, basically, if you use Talking Dashboard, on which version(s) of OS X do

Re: Time Machine to the rescue

2015-03-04 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
I use Time Machine to back up my virtual machines, but not from the active
Virtual Machines folder, which I exclude in the preferences for speed. This is
what VMWare recommends and it is a very good idea, because you don’t want Time
Machine to back up a machine that is being used; you will end up with ruined
backups, and waste a lot of disk space on your Time Capsule.

The idea is to have a separate folder which Time Machine does back up, which I
will remember to copy my healthy virtual machines into, when they are in a
known-good condition. In my experience, this actually works more reliably than
snapshots. I have the active folder on my SSD, for speed, and the snapshots on
my hard disk, which Time Machine will take a copy of.

The drawback of this approach is that one is strongly incentivized to keep
changes to a minimum, and thus VMs don’t grow organically, but are
frustratingly lean and minimal. There’s a cost to everything. :)

Re: Time Machine to the rescue

Yes I like this strategy. The only reason I don't employ it is that I find I'm
a bit pushed for space on the Macbook Air, and the VM files can get pretty
large. For those without that problem, it's a great idea.

I’ve gotten several calls on my i phone and using face time doesn’t
work. I hit the accept button, but I can’t hear the other person and
 they can’t hear me.

 How do I fix this?

My i phone and mac are on the same wifi network.

 thanks!
 Caitlyn

Re: How to answer a call from iPhone on the Mac

2015-03-04 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

As soon as hear the call come through, it's best to suspend any activity on the
keyboard, wait a second and then you should be able to use vo+arrow keys to
move through options to answer or reject the call. It's a bit tricky because
as you said, it is to do with the focus.

Re: iCloud drive and hard drive space?

Actually, iCloud does store copies of your files on the local Mac. Copies
have to be kept locally so that synchronization can occur if you go without a
network connection and then are connected again. It keeps all files up to date

Re: Safari can't handle TaxActOnline.com

2015-03-04 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
You are lucky if you got Internet Explorer to work, although some people on
this list have gotten Tax Act to work. When I tried them, I not only crashed
Safari, but I crashed JAWS for Windows three times. I have finally decided that
I do not like doing my taxes online where their computer can hang up on me if I
take too long or they have set up something stupid on their web site that makes
them partially or totally inaccessible. With Tax Act, this seems to be
especially bad if I put in something and then had to go back and edit it. When
I used Tax Act, I was more successful with the iPhone. It was better than using
either Windows or the Mac for me.

I have said before on this list, I really liked Turbo Tax for 2014. If you
haven’t already finished with your taxes, you might want to try it. The thing I
liked was that I could take as long as I wanted, which was a good thing since I
had to keep looking up information. Also, it was easier to go back and change
something. Turbo Tax for 2014 is written by the same company, but it is
excellent this year. You can electronic file also when you get done.

when I tried using Tax Act and called their customer service people, they
refused to talk to me unless I paid them first. Since the issue was
accessibility, I told them to forget it.

Regards,
Gigi

I don’t know what the problem is, but Safari was a total basket case on

process like a champ, but Safari was like a knee-walking drunken sailor on
 shore leave.
I’d never seen Safari act so flakey. I think the website is JAVA intensive,
 and maybe that’s the problem.
Anyone have any information to share about safari on this popular tax
 preparation site?

Re: Vario Ultra (wasRe: Mario Ultra braille display

2015-03-04 Thread Deb Lewis
Well I love my VarioUltra, but I have to say it has very major
problems which Baum doesn't seem to be resolving very quickly at all.
They've had significant difficulty shipping products at all and now
the current firmware version locks up and requires frequently
resetting the device. I know the product is new and new products have
growing pains, but I wouldn't consider ordering this device until
those of us who have it can report that it's stable. I hope it's very
soon because it has the potential to be a truly fabulous device. I've
been totally shocked by Baum's seemingly cluelessness because it's not
consistent with my previous experience. So definitely take a look at
it, but don't plan to invest until they do some serious work and until
they get production in order.
