Re: Advice on VO Plist

2015-04-23 Thread Gerry Cook
Hi Colin I had this happen when i first updated to yosemiti and i went to the
user library and deleted any of the vo plist files command down arrow to select
them all and after that all went back to normal, because there could have been
a currupt speech file and as they re generate that should fix the problem. All
the best and i hope that helps. then you can check that other box to do with
the apple scripts.

Re: office preview for mac, Reading by Word??

Hello Maurice,

You need to get the update. Go to the Help menu and you’ll find it there. You
have to jump through hoops to get the process established. The first thing is
an update app which has to be downloaded.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-23 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Sorry, could you just clarify for me: were the watches you tried the sport
models or the stainless steel models? I’ve read lots of accounts of Apple
stores carrying different sizes of watch, but not of the same type, and I’d be
interested to know why people are opting for the steel model over the Sport if
they are doing so, or whether their impression is true for both types. The
steel model seems to be reported as very chunky, and I’m wondering if the Sport
improves on that.

The watches arriving tomorrow are both the Sport because I’m in trial mode with
these things. The wisdom of going to the Store to actually see them before
ordering them is nothing to getting them tomorrow, and I can see all the others
whenever my store next carries them. :)

Re: Adware warning!

2015-04-23 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
The Adware menace has, unfortunately, spread to the Mac, yes.

The good news is that, right now, there are fairly few strains of the stuff,
and AdwareMedic is a very good bet on its removal. Antivirus software
typically doesn’t identify adware because, while obnoxious in the extreme, it
isn’t actually malicious—at least, not in the sense of actually being harmful
to your computer.

The bad news is that, like Windows users, you are no longer insulated by
obscurity against your own misjudgement. Install software only from reputable
sources; do not download from any site other than that which officially
distributes the software. In general this means that you do not download from
any repository, such as a download site, but get the software directly from the
project’s own web page, typically the page of the author. Naturally, if you
trust Apple, one obvious way to seal things tight is only to install from the
Mac App Store, or only to install Apple-signed software. In any event, do not
install software merely because you were asked to do so by any message coming
from within your web browser. In case of doubt, ask questions.

Advice on VO Plist

2015-04-23 Thread Colin Matthews
Hi!
OK it looks like I've got to maybe remove the VO Plist and I want to make sure
I'm deleting the right one!
I did a [I thought] clean install of Yosemite also erasing my HD before
installing Yosemite I was on Mavericks!
Well under Mavericks somehow I set something with Voice over where if I put
12in after a track name VO would say 12 inches as I wanted but I ended up with
[not on everything] but like on an Email thread where the title is "updating to
8.3" my voice over says 8.3inches even though there is no [in] after the 8.3!
So I thought after doing a total clean install of Yosemite would solve that!
Well it still says it and also VO utility will not let me check the [allow
voice over to be controlled by apple scripts]
and some letters are not spoken when I type like[c]
So do I delete the whole VO plist or just part of them!
Then do I empty the trash before restarting?
Thanks!
I've done the usuals Disc repairs and I also did a VO total reset!

RE: Adware warning!

2015-04-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Christine,

I am so sorry that you had to experience such a, what for many of us, would be
a scary thing.

You know, a month or so ago, a friend of mine purchased a new MacBook Air.

I don't know what she did between the Friday when I set it up and the following
Tuesday but when next I saw it, there was no doubt but that she had been
hacked/compromised. I don't remember the particulars but a quick Google search
confirmed it.

Now even though many hate to hear this, I'll tell you that, for my money, the
only way to really be certain that you have a clean secure system is to (1)
restore from a known good backup such as one would have using SuperDuper or (2)
wiping the drive clean and performing a fresh install. As far as I am
concerned, once your system has been compromised, there are no other options.

So many times I see both Windows and Mac users take less drastic steps to
redeem their systems only to have the same problems crop up a few weeks or
sometimes months later.

This is just my opinion, of course, as I do not want to start a heated debate.

Subject: Adware warning!

I want you all to know about something I just experienced.
I was on Twitter within Safari and a “critical service warning” popped up,
informing me that a malicious virus had been detected and had attacked my
system, and that “we have shut down all of your critical systems to protect any
further damage.” The warning went on to give this number:
888 553-4193
and directed me to give a number starting with Mac and ending with several
digits.
My BS detector was on full alert.
I called Apple and told them what was going on. I was informed that this occurs
several times a day at least, and that it usually involves adware.
When a screen sharing session link was sent, Safari could not find the server,
nor could Google Chrome.
I was then told to open the MacBook in safe mode, and I thought I could use
VoiceOver in safe mode, but it would not come on, and command F5 would not
bring it up.
The tech support rep handed me over to someone who had more VoiceOver
experience. He had me shut down and restart normally, then sent me the ability
to screen share by using my apple ID, which made the screen sharing like an
application, which enabled me to go to adwaremedic.com, download adware medic,
and run it.
This problem appears to be resolved, but I wanted you all to be aware of this
incident, as well as to inquire: Isn’t there a way to use VoiceOver in safe
mode?
Thank you . . . and be careful out there. I was told people have been known to
give their credit card numbers to these people thinking they are getting their
computers fixed.
Christine

I asked the Apple tech support rep about whether I should install anything else

have to say that no one I know personally who has a Mac has antivirus

First, I know of kno way to use Voice Over at the true route level of the drive

protection on board your system? IF not, for my part, I urge you to consider
it. What you get is, of course, up to you: and, there will be quite a few

HI
HiHi Myrna,

Ohto to to You were so lucky to have a chance to try the VO feature. I went to
the store a day after they were released. I didn't purchase yet, but was very
tempted as a early birthday gift to myself. It's a big one this year, so I
thought I would do it in grand style. I decided to wait for some feedback from
other blind folks on how well accessibility works before placing an order.
Well!!! Now I will need to wait until the summertime when they'll be more
available. Anyways, I hope you make the right choice for yourself, "To Buy Or

Hi Myrna and others. I saw a very handy tip posted to Twitter indicating that
you can take any of the Apple Watch models they have in store, and tell Siri to
turn VoiceOver on.
Cool that you got to play with it fully VO-enabled.

Re: Well, I did it, Pre-ordered the Apple watch!

2015-04-23 Thread Myrna Votta
Hi,

Today, I visited the Apple Store on West 14th Street, in New York City. I
really don’t know why I was so lucky, perhaps just picked the right store,
because when I told the sales person there that I knew that I wasn’t going to
be able to experience Voiceover, she said that she was almost positive that
the store did have one accessible Apple watch so that blind visitors could try
Voiceover. She had her colleague look for it and it was found. Therefore, I
had the opportunity to play with Voiceover and interact with the screen. I
also had siri open the settings app for me. The watch was the 42mm sports
model and I would say that the speaker sound level was like most of the talking
watches all of us have used. The atmosphere in the store, as in most of the
Apple stores, of course, was noisy, so it was a bit difficult to hear.
However, in a less noisy environment, I think that it will be fine. I did have
the chance to try the 38mm model, which I liked even better than the larger
watch, which really isn’t that much larger. The sales woman said that she
liked the look of it on my wrist better than the 42mm watch. I did try the
band that comes with the sports model, the melanise band and the leather loop
band. Although the sales woman and my friend really liked the leather loop, I
didn’t I did, however, like the melanise band because it felt like a mesh
bracelet and it was very light. I loved the design of the watch and the feel
of the glass. Now, For me “to order or not to order, that is the question."

Re: office preview for mac, Reading by Word??

2015-04-23 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Anne,

Yes, I can see what you mean. It seems that in Word, Voiceover reports the
word in front of the cursor rather than the word which the cursor has just
passed when you move forward through the text with option+arrow key. However,
when you move through the words backwards, Voiceover will report the words that
the cursor has just passed. I wonder whether it has something to do with the
way some screen readers on Windows work, like for instance Jaws. This is going
to take some getting used to.

Re: Toggle Bluetooth Script

2015-04-23 Thread Barry Hadder
Ok, then that must be it.
UI scripting is definitely less reliable, but but without any programatic
interface there isn’t any other way to do certain things.

I’m able to tell which button is which be getting the result of every button of
front window. I was able to tell that button 6 on my system is the minimize
from the result of properties of button 6 of front window.
This is all in the second tell block.

It appears that this script will break whenever you upgrade your system. I
have a suggestion that I believe is more reliable.

tell application "System Events" to tell process "System Preferences"
set theButtons to every button of front window
repeat with theButton in theButtons
if (name of theButton is "Turn Bluetooth On" or name of
theButton is "Turn Bluetooth Off") then
exit repeat
end if
end repeat

click theButton
beep 3
end tell

Of course, if they ever change the title of the button, then this will break as
well. But, they haven’t ever changed it to my knowledge.

Thanks for replying. I really wanted to know more about what was going on and
that helped a lot. This is a good lesson on the pitfalls of UI scripting.

Re: office preview for mac, Reading by Word??

2015-04-23 Thread Maurice Mines
Good morning list, in response to this I can’t get Microsoft Word preview for
the Mac to work at all. Should I be just uninstalling it until this program
actually does something other than take up space on my hard drive? Because so
far I do the program and the Microsoft Office preview as a whole is completely
inaccessible which is about par for the course with this particular kind of
software. Unless someone can prove to me, and/or show me that this is a viable
product for anyone who is totally blind using the Mac in the future. Any
thoughts?

Sincerely Maurice mines.

Re: Toggle Bluetooth Script

2015-04-23 Thread Alex Hall
For the record, this is exactly why I avoid GUI scripts. A UI redesign I never
notice suddenly has a script clicking things it was never meant to click. Plus,
I hate to have things open if I don't have to have them open.

As to speaking, if you already have Talking Dashboard, have a look in the
Utilities script. There is a speak handler you can copy for use in your own
scripts, just be sure to include the credit to Apple at the top, and the
isVoiceOverRunning handler that the speak handler needs.

But, can that feature actually bend the pitch? The pitch on the recording is
verible and thus the pitch needs to actually very with the recording. Can
Amadeus Pro do that? Not to the best of my knowledge. I'm not talking here

Hello,

Thanks for sending through the info regarding Mail Drop.

It's a great feature of Yosemite that's proving to be useful when

Again thanks the the clarification.

MailDrop works fine. The attachments menu will show the attachment just as

send. For the benefit of other email clients, the body of the message is
updated to include a fragment of text, one per attachment, with the clickable
link. This also makes MailDrop a nice way to temporarily host something; send
an email to yourself, copy the link, and share it. The file expires in a
month. MailDrop is only activated when the SMTP server announces a SIZE
capability that is exceeded by your attachment’s size.

Re: doing a paper in pages, my experience

2015-04-23 Thread Barry Hadder
Hi Anne,

Thanks for the tip.

A couple of things I feel worth mentioning about office are that firstly, Word
doesn’t reopen windows after quitting when you uncheck the box in system
preferences like it is supposed to do. And secondly, they have overridden some
basic OS X keystrokes in the document area such as control-a.
Office just made a giant leap forward, so a lot of these things could be
cleared up by the final release and it would be healthy to have another option
for such things on the Mac.
That being said, I think that iWork are very good office apps and if they would
just take the time to beaf them up a little bit, they would be great.
Unfortunately, they appear to be more interested in gold watches than their OS
X software at the moment.

Hello Barry,

The current version of Word is lacking in many ways. I feel as though I’m
wading through mud when using it, whereas in Pages, I’m swimming through clear
water.

Of course, I’m unfamiliar with Word and know Pages very well, which probably
makes a difference, but there are so many things I don’t like about Office in
general, such as Cmd-w not closing Preferences and combo boxes not working.
Neither can I read straight through a document sentence by sentence. I have to
stop interacting with one page and interact with the next to carry on.

The only real plus is that it talks to Contacts, which the new Pages still
doesn’t do – unless there’s some way of scripting this.

Cheers,

Anne

I haven’t tried it, but, I’m guessing that the initial place where you
need to select a wireless network probably isn’t accessible since there’s
been no real base System to load VO from. If you live in a place where
there’s no other WiFi networks visible, then you should be able to enter
your WiFi password and move on. If there are many WiFi networks close by,
this may be difficult without sighted assistance. I guess a person could
arrow down once, press return then enter your WiFi password, then wait
five or so minutes to see if the base System is downloaded to your
machine, then move on if that doesn’t work by trying two down arrows and
so on. This could take you quite a while and be very frustrating, but it
may be your only option if you don’t have access to sighted assistance.

You could try identifying the file type. Copy the file in Finder, open
Terminal, type “file” followed by a space, and then paste. Press RETURN. File
will try to identify the file type, which may give you a hint as to what it was
before it lost its name.

 Hi all,

A quick question on clean installing OS X. I wanted to clean install
before putting Yosemite on my Macbook Air. I made a bootable drive, booted
into the recovery partition by holding down command+R then pressing
command+F5 until Voiceover started up and I could format the Macintosh HD.
I clicked on the size, (128 GB Apple SSD), and chose to erase it. Could it
be possible that I've inadvertently erased the recovery partition?
As I then went back to the utilities table, chose to re-install OS X,
which turned out to be Mavericks. As I didn't wish to install this
version, I shut down the computer, restarted it and attempted to get back
into recovery mode, but no dice this time. I'm unable to get VO to start,
and even accessing the boot menyu with the option key and pressing right
arrow once or twice and pressing enter to boot from the external media is
 a no-go.
I've read several archives from this list that say to wait different
amounts of time before attempting to start Voiceover in the recovery
partition, and none have worked. I understand this partition is hidden,
but I wonder if by clicking on, and erasing the size of the drive, instead
of the Macintosh HD partition, I've slipped out of the grasp

Re: An odd problem with Amadeus Pro

That sounds vaguely familiar to me. That sort of thing used to happen when I
first started using Amadeus, and I quickly realized the best procedure is to
use the P Kee to set markers. You can always re-name and manipulate your
markers in the markers window. I avoid using the M and ship them keys entirely.
You can set Mark is with P either on the fly or when playback has stopped, And
that's all the markers functionality I need. As I said you can rename markers
or delete them etc. in the markers window if need be.

Re: doing a paper in pages, my experience

2015-04-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

You know the size of your page and its margins, so you know the size of the
available space. It’s a case of simple arithmetic. Just make sure that you’re
using either inches or centimetres and not points.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: doing a paper in pages, my experience

2015-04-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Gabriel,

I’m not familiar enough with Word to rate it honestly. However, Pages is 95%
accessible and, in my opinion, easy to use.

Of course, the accessible version of Office is still in beta so you would
expect problems.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Help creating resume on pages

2015-04-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

When using one of the templates provided in Pages, there’s a problem with
placeholder text. What you have to do to be able to navigate using the arrow
keys is to press Return followed by Cmd-z. After that, you won’t start moving
the element around.

Cheers,

Anne

need a way to very pitch on recording and uncertain where to turn now

2015-04-23 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay,

Just how to say this I do not exactly know. I bought Sound Forge Pro for the
Mac, and, I am having the case of discovering that much of what I thought I
had, I don't in fact have. Yes, some major accessibility issues have been
address: for example, one can now manipulate regions and markers and one can
use presets also. While I am happy about this, and while the 6 band
paragraphic mastering equalizer is a mighty big plus, I find myself
dissapointed at the noise reduction and click and pop supression. Yes, they
work, but, the Algarythms which Izotope has chosen to license for Sound Forge
fall very short of what I quire. The algarythms used in RX 2 are so much
better: so, I keep and use those instead. RX three is impossible and won't
even open. Asside from all that, what I'm looking for is a way to take the
pitch of a recording and bend it veriably either up or down. So far, the Apple
provided AU pitch controls seem not to be having any effect at all. Amadeus
Pro, as good as it truly is, cannot make this happen: at least, I have yet to
find a way to do it. So, anybody out there able to recommend a good AU (audio
unit) plug in that will allow verible pitch? I'd rather not go with audasity
on this. Thanks.

Sorry for the rant, but, I'm sort of at a loss here.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray
