Re: Can't transfer music from iTunes 12.7x to iPhone 7 that is running iOS 10.x. Why not?

2017-10-24 Thread Kevin Gibbs
You’ll be fine. My problem was that there wasn’t enough power in the USB port
on the keyboard. Plugging into the main computer solved the problem. Too bad
I upgraded to iOS 11 before I thought of that. That upgrade is causing me some
VO problems with mail. But that’s another story.

Re: Latency when browsing large web pages with High Sierra and VoiceOver?

2017-10-24 Thread Vic
Cool, I guess you are lucky then!
It's true that I'm on the 2012 Mac mini, but it's a Intel Core I7 quad-core
CPU with 8 MB of RAM. I don't anticipate VoiceOver needing this much power
to zip through web pages.
Don't know... Cleaned up caches with
Onyx, but no go...

There is a blocking numbers feature under the settings / phone within IOS

Try looking at that and see if it gives you what you require.

 Bad points,
You can't flick between the 2 operating systems at the same time as
it's not a vm running windows within the mac OS system .

As for installer of boot camp,
Yeah it works great up to the point where the mac os / bootcamp
restarts the machine into the windows installation setup..

The bootcamp installation process works well with voiceover and so
long as you have the windows installers in an ISO file and a minimum
16GB usb it will download the apple drivers and windows installation
setup and install it all from the USB once things are up and working.

Bad point is that once the mac restarts into the windows installation
there is no screen reader available to you as there is no audio device
installed or working within the windows partition.

 Still it's my preferred option.

 hey all,
Fusion the new version 10 and i are having shall we say some
relationship difficulties and i was wondering if there are any
 advantages to using bootcamp?
I can see a couple of disadvantages but would be happy to be corrected.
i will not be able to seamlessly switch from the mac OS to windows but
with the latest version of Fusion the keyboard is not disengaging from
 windows.
The second problem I see is with Windows installation, does bootcamp
have a similar feature to fusion's easy install where you put in your
 chosen parameters and sit back?
 any help would be great.

Re: blocking phone numbers in ios

2017-10-24 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi Jean,

I just checked this out to double check..

Tap on recents in the phone app and pick the number you are interested in. tap
on the more info button after the name of the number, or the number itself,
depending on how it shows up. Another screen will open. the first button you
see is edit. Swipe through this entire screen and the block caller option is
way at the bottom of the screen. Tap it and you’re good to go.

Caution: if you select the edit button, this will let you edit the contact info
for the number, but *not* block-the block option is on the screen that opens
after you tap on the more info button..

HTH,
Cait

Re: Conversation threads in messages app on the mac and iPhone after latest updates

2017-10-24 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Andrew,

Yes, there are a lot of opinions out there regarding clean installs. Some
swear by them, others not so much. I'm in the "not so much" category. If
things are running normally in the earlier OS, then I would say that the clean
install is unnecessary. If you're experiencing problems, then by all means a
clean install may fix some of those issues. One of the problems that I find
with people doing clean installs, is that they don't really do a true clean
install. The true clean install requires you to reinstall all apps,
reconfigure all network settings, re-create user accounts etc. Using any
migration tools negates the possible benefits of the clean install. I've not
performed a clean install since probably 10.5 or so which includes computer
changes, HD to SSD changes etc. All runs smooth as silk as far as I can tell.

Re: Can't transfer music from iTunes 12.7x to iPhone 7 that isrunning iOS 10.x. Why not?

2017-10-24 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Kevin,

Glad it's all sorted out. Yes, the power requirements of many newer devices
can't be met by the ports on the side of the USB keyboard. The other thing to
be careful of is to not plug a keyboard in through a USB hub. Odd things often
will happen.

This would also account for the fact that I was incessantly hearing the beep

I have now connected the iPhone to one of the USB ports on the back of the Mac

That answers your question Mark. It asked you to subscribe to Apple music
which means then you can't create a radio station without subscribing to a

Re: blocking phone numbers

2017-10-24 Thread E.T.

Jean,
Step by step. Open the phone app. Open Recents. Locate the offending
entry. Swipe to More and open it. Single tap Favorites to put focus on
it, do not open Favorites. Swipe left one time. That should land you on
the Block button that is in the More screen.

A lot of work and I do not bother with it myself. Perhaps 1 out of
hundreds will use the same number to annoy you. If the caller is not in
my contacts, I just do not pick up and if my phone is within reach, I
press the sleep/wake button twice to send them straight to voice mail.
Only once out of hundreds has a scamnmer even left a voice mail.

Re: Can't transfer music from iTunes 12.7x to iPhone 7 that isrunning iOS 10.x. Why not?

2017-10-24 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

First, if you're subscribed to Apple Music or iTunes Match, music that is not
purchased from iTunes, will be searched for in the Apple iTunes huge library in
an effort to give you a iTunes quality version of the song title. If it is not
available in the iTunes Store, then it is simply uploaded to Apple's servers
for use on all your devices. You do not lose anything from those sorts of
titles. Apple also does not appear to care where that music came from, if it
does not match anything in their library, it's yours to do with whatever you
wish. The problems arise when you use Apple Music and it does match a ripped
song title with an iTunes version. What seems to happen is that it upgrades
the title to the Apple Music version, which is fine, but if you ever stop your
Apple Music subscription, then those titles are no longer accessible. The
workaround is to keep a copy of those titles on a separate drive somewhere just
in case you do stop your subscription. The iTunes Match subscription does the
same sort of thing, in the sense that it will give you the iTunes high quality
version, but it does not have the same DRM restrictions, so if you were to stop
the iTunes Match subscription, you get to keep the newer high quality version
of the song title without any issues. I guess that it's entirely possible that
Apple Music has modified things so that you don't necessarily lose your titles,
but I haven't heard of that myself.

Now moving on to your original issue. it sounds like there are devices or
software on your Mac that are either dedicating ports or messing with
configuration in some manner. There's no real logical reason for your keyboard
to stop working when an iPhone is connected unless the iPhone is being
identified as some other kind of device instead. I'm certainly not saying that
it isn't happening, just that there's no logical reason. I wonder if you have
an external keyboard you could connect that would be usable when the internal
keyboard is being uncooperative? Either Bluetooth or USB would do.

Later...

Hi:
Disregard my last message about blocking phone numbers. Actually, after opening
more info you have to focus on favorites then swipe left to find the blocking
feature. Instead of just focusing on it I was opening favorites.

Many thanks for your help,

I promise you that the iPhone doesn[t show up anywhere. I hear the beep you
get when you plug the phone in to charge. This beep recurs every 15 seconds or
so. But the device never appears on screen. I know this because I can see
well enough to know. It’s not on the top of the screen. It’s not on the left
side of the screen. WTF, ladies and gentlemen?

You can't flick between the 2 operating systems at the same time as it's
not a vm running windows within the mac OS system .

As for installer of boot camp,
Yeah it works great up to the point where the mac os / bootcamp restarts
the machine into the windows installation setup..

The bootcamp installation process works well with voiceover and so long as
you have the windows installers in an ISO file and a minimum 16GB usb it
will download the apple drivers and windows installation setup and install
it all from the USB once things are up and working.

Bad point is that once the mac restarts into the windows installation
there is no screen reader available to you as there is no audio device

 Still it's my preferred option.

RE: Can't transfer music from iTunes 12.7x to iPhone 7 that isrunningiOS 10.x. Why not?

2017-10-24 Thread David Griffith
I looked up on google and it appears that for the set up only you need to have
your phone connected to iTunes and then turn on wireless synch.

However the behaviour you describe when your keyboard is non responsive when
your phone is connected is something I have never experienced. There sounds
like it is a problem with the OS at some level. I think you can still repair
permissions with the Onyx free utility and trouble shooting steps like
resetting the Pram may be in order.
In the end you may have to re-install the OS if it does not behave properly.
Another approach is to avoid iTunes entirely and purchase the excellent and
accessible Waltr app from the App Store which will transfer music to your phone
simply by copying and pasting from Finder to the App.
For what it is worth here is the link from Google on setting up wireless synch.

There is no reference to either Apple Music or iTunes Match or iCloud.

To clarify that last sentence, my device does not appear in the left hand
sidebar under any circumstances.  There is a reference to an iPhone under
Preferences/devices.  But no way to choose manual options of any kind.

I have never had Apple Music and will never have it.
This has nothing to do with wireless synching.
As far as I am aware it is nothing to do with iCloud either but simply a way
of transferring content without a cable.
I am not on my Mac at the moment but I will have a look on Google to see if
wireless synch is still an easy option.

RE: Can't transfer music from iTunes 12.7x to iPhone 7 that isrunningiOS 10.x. Why not?

2017-10-24 Thread David Griffith
I am not sure how involved iCloud is with this. Certainly I have never seen my
Music in iCloud apart from the fact that I have an iTunes Match subscription
but even before I had this I believe I could transfer wirelessly.
I think you go into iTunes Preference and turn on Wireless synching from
there. Possibly you need to do the same on your phone.
Do all this without your phone connected.
I have not ripped a CD for a while but with this enabled all I do is import
the CD into iTunes and it magically turns up on my iPhone without any further
intervention from me. I don’t ever connect with a cable for transferring music.

Reorganizing inside playlist

2017-10-24 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

I’m having trouble moving songs around inside a playlist. I thought I use to
be able to delete the song, then paste it in a different slot. I’ve tried
cutting and pasting with VO-comma and VO-period, but that isn’t working. Nor
is mouse down and move the song. Any suggestions?

For now, I deleted the playlist and I’ll start over. Being more careful where
I’m placing the tracks.

Thanks,
Traci

My sympathies – I am personally resisting both the new iTunes and iOS 11. As an
idea have you ever tried wireless synching.
I have this set up but I would need to research it to remember how I did it.
If you google Wireless synching between iPhone and iTunes you might find
something which may help.

Jean,
The Block this Caller option is still present in iOS 10. Do this.
After you open the More option, tap the Favorites tab at the bottom then
swipe left once.

Hi Jessica,
What I do when I'm on the praise teem drumming is just to ask the Teem leader

prepare properly.
Some one in leadership or on the teem definitely has the info you need so to
save time ask them for it.

Hi,

I have not looked at the reminders app, but do notice other bugs. For
example, I am unable to delete my podcasts in the podcast app unless I
listen to it, and there are times when I don't want to listen to a
particular podcast! This release seems buggy in general.

One thing I noticed, but then again this could be due to the fact that I’ve
never really used the reminders app before, that I can access the reminders

this is a bug, or if I’m missing something that I just need to be filled in on.

Re: Conversation threads in messages app on the mac and iPhone after latest updates

2017-10-24 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Andrew,

I am not seeing this on my iPhone 6S running the latest iOS release of iOS 11.
It sounds like the Messages app is not properly coordinating with the Contacts
app. I would go into your iCloud settings and verify that Contacts is enabled
and also verify that some of these specific contacts are displaying properly in
the Contacts app. If things look normal when checking these items, first thing
to always do is restart your iPhone. If you've done that already, or if
nothing improves, try turning off Contacts in iCloud then turning it back on.
I've found that the best thing to do when turning it off, is to turn it off,
then back out of Settings, then re-open Settings and the iCloud pane and to
finally re-enable syncing of your contacts.

HTH.

Just want to confirm from other users whether they are seeing this strange

conversations were threaded by the name of the sender obtained from contacts.
After I’ve updated to High Sierra and to iOS 11, conversations are not always
threaded at all and the sender name is missing, replaced by their phone number.
This is a bit of a nuisance. I’ve searched for a setting to adjust but I
can’t find it. Might it be a bug? The strange thing is that if I compose a
message first and choose a particular contact from Contacts, then the message
appears with the name of the person I have sent to but if they reply to my
message, their reply is not a part of the thread but appears separately and it
is their telephone number that appears in the list of messages so you can’t
tell who the message is from unless you read it.

I’m also having trouble deleting messages. When I choose to delete a message
via the action menu, Messages app still reports this message. Nor does the
status of the message changes when I’ve read it. Is this something you are
noticing as well?

2017-10-24 Thread Mike Arrigo
The main advantage to boot camp is that all of the computer's resources
are dedicated to Windows, so it will run a bit faster. You have already
pointed out the largest disadvantages.

Original message:

hey all,
Fusion the new version 10 and i are having shall we say some
relationship difficulties and i was wondering if there are any
advantages to using bootcamp?

I can see a couple of disadvantages but would be happy to be corrected.
i will not be able to seamlessly switch from the mac OS to windows but
with the latest version of Fusion the keyboard is not disengaging from windows.
The second problem I see is with Windows installation, does bootcamp
have a similar feature to fusion's easy install where you put in your
chosen parameters and sit back?

any help would be great.

 Bad points,
You can't flick between the 2 operating systems at the same time as it's
not a vm running windows within the mac OS system .

Bad point is that once the mac restarts into the windows installation
there is no screen reader available to you as there is no audio device
installed or working within the windows partition.

 Still it's my preferred option.

Re: You Tube downloader?

2017-10-24 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I use a paid up called
WinX HD Video Converter for Mac.app

It performs quite well once you copy the url of the video from youtube which
can easily be done from the address bar of the page. It has some unlabelled
buttons but others have got help tags if you just let voiceover cursor rest on
it for a few seconds.

You Tube downloader?

2017-10-24 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Hello,

up to now I used You View as a You Tube downloader. Unfortunately it doesn’t
support High Sierra and the developer seems not to release a new version soon.
Which downloader do you recommend? I’d love to have an app rather than a web
page. But a web page would be fine as well.

Thanks and all the best
Jürgen

Conversation threads in messages app on the mac and iPhone after latest updates

2017-10-24 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Just want to confirm from other users whether they are seeing this strange
behaviour: in Messages app on the mac and on the iPhone, previously
conversations were threaded by the name of the sender obtained from contacts.

Andrew

RE: Any advantages to using bootcamp over Fusion for windows?

2017-10-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah as the installer goes through and installs windows the final part of the
installation is the installation of the Bootcamp / apple drivers for the
windows installation.

Once this is done and the finished button is complete the machine restarts and
you can then start up narrator to do other things such as install jaws or NVDA
etc.

I've not been able to setup an installer that didn't need human interaction but
I'm guessing tha tit could be done
But I've always had sighted assistance.

Good points

Windows is always there and uses full system resources available to it via the
installation.

Bad points,
You can't flick between the 2 operating systems at the same time as it's not a
vm running windows within the mac OS system .

As for installer of boot camp,
Yeah it works great up to the point where the mac os / bootcamp restarts the
machine into the windows installation setup..

The bootcamp installation process works well with voiceover and so long as you
have the windows installers in an ISO file and a minimum 16GB usb it will
download the apple drivers and windows installation setup and install it all
from the USB once things are up and working.

Bad point is that once the mac restarts into the windows installation there
is no screen reader available to you as there is no audio device installed or
working within the windows partition.

 Still it's my preferred option.

latest version of Fusion the keyboard is not disengaging from windows.
The second problem I see is with Windows installation, does bootcamp have a
similar feature to fusion's easy install where you put in your chosen
parameters and sit back?
any help would be great.

Re: Latency when browsing large web pages with High Sierra and VoiceOver?

2017-10-24 Thread Jürgen Fleger
Just tried it, no latency here on this web side on my iMac 2014 with Safari 11
in High Sierra. I even holt down the VO keys and the right arrow key which
actually makes no sense but even then no latency.

5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET

CNET How To - Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 11:05 AM
5 reasons to use Edge in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update - CNET With Windows 10
Fall Creators Update, Microsoft has added a handful of new features and tweaks
to its Edge browser. I doubt they will be enough to pry you away from your
browser of choice, but the Edge browser continues to trend in the right
direction. Here are the five big improvements Microsoft has made to Edge with
its most recent Windows update.
Pin pages to the taskbar
Not seen since Windows 8, you can once again pin websites to the taskbar. To do
so, click the triple-dot button along the Edge window's right edge and choose
Pin this page to the taskbar.

You can put your favorite websites on your taskbar for fast access.

True full-screen mode
Edge finally has a true, full-screen mode where you lose the browser's menus
and tabs at the top. Hit F11 to toggle in and out of full-screen mode or click
the triple-dot button and then click the diagonal double-arrow button to the
right of the zoom controls.
Better integration with your phone

Edge promises to let you start an article on your phone and then pick it where
you left off on your PC, but you'll need to use a preview version of Edge for
iOS or Android or the Cortana app for iOS or Android to try it out.
And you'll need to connect your phone to your PC in the new Phone section of
the Settings app, which you'll find on the main page of Settings. I tried it
out by installing the Cortana app on my iPhone ($849.00 at Apple). I opened a
news article and tapped the blue button to continue reading on my PC. It worked
seamlessly; as soon as I tapped the button on my phone, a new tab opened on
Edge on my PC.

Heading home? Send the article you are reading on your phone to your PC.

Better bookmarking
Click the star button in Edge (or hit Control-D) and you'll see Edge's bookmark
menu got a design refresh and better illustrates the folder hierarchy for your
favorites, making it quicker and easier to find a folder to plop a new
favorite. And on the Favorites hub itself, you'll find two new items on the
right-click menu -- Sort by name and Edit URL. The former lets you arrange a
list of favorites alphabetically and the latter lets you quickly edit a
favorite's URL.
Better PDF and eBook reader
Microsoft added a few tools to make Edge more capable with PDFs and eBooks for
touchscren PCs. With PDFs, you can now click the Add Notes button to the right
of the URL bar to ink on the PDF, from signing your name and highlighting lines
to adding comments and copying text. It's particularly useful for signing
documents -- no longer will you need to add a weird electronic signature or,
worse, print, sign and scan a PDF in order to send back a signed copy.

You can add highlights and notes to eBooks as well as PDF files.

For eBooks, students (and habitual notetakers) will rejoice at being able to
mark up eBooks as you read them. Just highlight some text and a small menu will
appear that lets you highlight the text, underline it, add a comment, copy it
or open a Cortana panel along the Edge window's right edge without leaving the
page you are on.

RE: remotely controlling another Mac

2017-10-24 Thread Simon Fogarty
Work station to work station vo wont work through the connection, if you have a
server in the middle and remote desktop enabled then yes vo will work,
otherwise you could try a remote connection and run VO on your friends computer
while listening via a telephone but again not a great means to a taks.

Subject: remotely controlling another Mac

A friend of mine just purchased a new iMac. He would like me to help him set it
up and configure it, and I am happy to do that. I was wondering, however, if
there was a way for me to connect to his Mac at all The Way one JAWS user could
connect with another JAWS user using tandem mode in the PC world.

Thank you for any information you can provide.
