mac sound card question

2018-01-15 Thread The wolf
Hello I am wondering if any one could tell me how to set up the mac for
line in recording?

there is only 1 jack on the mac it is a head phone jack I am thinking it
may be one of those jacks that have multiple purposes like one of those
jacks that you can use both for line in put recording or for head phones

once I get my partition issue fixed I was going to start recording some
stuff on my mac

thanks

Hank

Hi!
I think you have to resize or re-partition the mac and start over.
That’s the easiest solution.

Hi,

To clarify.  What's likely happened here is that when you attempted
to create the BootCamp partition, something went wrong.  Obvious, I
know, but it needs to be said first.  So, you now have the Macintosh
HD partition using up half the space of the 250 GB drive and the rest
is unallocated space.  As Janina mentioned, distil in Terminal is
your best option.  Since you have a MacBook and you're running High
Sierra, the drive will be formatted as APFS which makes the distil
command set slightly different than if it was a spinner drive.  "What
you'll want to do is first determine a few facts about the drive and
it's allocations, then you should be able to expand the Macintosh HD
to use up the remaining free space and, thus, regain all the space
that the 250 GB drive has to offer.

Actually, the first thing to do is to make sure that you have a
backup of your data incase of problems.  There's not likely to be
any, but as soon as I say that, there probably will be.  The commands
that you need to consider are:

• distil list (this will list all the volumes on your drive and
outline their format/size etc)
• distil apfs (this will list the available commands under the apfs
volume set)
• distil apfs resizeVolume (is likely the command you'll need to
regain the free space)

Note, arguments like resizeVolume are case sensitive.  Also, be sure
to do the backup first as you don't want to lose you stuff.  Usually,
the system won't let you destroy things without either warning you or
just not allowing you to perform the action, but you never know.  You
also may need to perform some of these actions from the Recovery
Partition, but, I believe that you really should be able to
non-destructively resize the Macintosh HD volume without too much
headache from within Terminal.

Later...

You need to learn to use diskutil from the command line. This is best

Note that diskutil is not the same as the application called Disk

I believe I previously sent you a pointer about this?

RE: Bootable usb stick is not bootable.

2018-01-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon and Everyone,

Interesting.

I'm glad to know that the USB sticks show up in High Sierra.

I think the last time I made a bootable stick, then tried to use it, was back
on El Capitan.

I think I'll make a bootable stick, sometime this week. It's a good idea to
have one, right?

Thank you all for chiming in on this one. I love re-evaluating my perspective
on these types of issues said reevaluation being inspired by all of your
wonderful feedback.

I have not experienced what you are stating. In all previous version of the
MacOS bootable installer on a USB stick that I have created, it was visible
through the Startup Disk. I just tested my High Sierra USB installer and it

I think i have made a mistake by formatting it to Mac os extended journal.
I am not sure if this matters or not.
Is there a way of checking wheather the downloaded installer may be corrupt or

How big should the installer package be when its downloaded.
Mine is 5 gb.

RE: Bootable usb stick is not bootable.

2018-01-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
That's not the way to create a bootable USB device,

You need about 7gig for high sierra
Terminal for the command to create the bootable USB,
And the installer file (file name.app) from within the download package.
The usb needs to be mac os extended journaled
And GUID
But the terminal command will format the drive as part of the setup.

I will now try to boot it up and see if it works.

I have not yet made a bootable High Sierra stick so cannot confirm this but

The problem is that its not in the startdisk selection when i go to system

I think i have made a mistake by formatting it to Mac os extended journal.
I am not sure if this matters or not.
Is there a way of checking wheather the downloaded installer may be corrupt or
something else may have gone south?
How big should the installer package be when its downloaded.
Mine is 5 gb.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark,

I have not experienced what you are stating. In all previous version of the
MacOS bootable installer on a USB stick that I have created, it was visible
through the Startup Disk. I just tested my High Sierra USB installer and it
was visible in the Startup Disk pane as well. I'm certainly not disputing that
you've had that experience, but it is not the morn.

Hi list,
This will help anybody looking for the previous version of Skype.

https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA34825/accessibility-features-in-the-new-skype-for-windows-mac-and-linux
heres a blurb from their site;

Skype is designed to work with Assistive Technologies, including screen readers
provided with Windows and MacOS. Microsoft is aware of potential performance
issues when using the new version of Skype with VoiceOver, on older versions of
MacOS. Microsoft recommends updating to the latest version of MacOS, and
installing available updates.
We're continually working to improve accessibility in Skype, but if you prefer
the previous experience you can download it.
I did and its night and day better than the new 1! :)

Hello Janina,

Thank you for posting this info.

Yes, the techs at this number are excellent.

I have called them several times during the past two years and they have
resolved my issues, beautifully.

Hi All:

For everyone who's interested in contact data for the dedicated accessibility
support desk service offered by Microsoft, the web page you want to bookmark is:

https://support.microsoft.com/answerdesk/accessibility

They have a phone number you can call in the U.S.:

+1 800 936 5900

I have it on good authority these are specialists trained especially to help
persons with disabilities use Windows and Office. They're based in Denver.

RE: Bootable usb stick is not bootable.

2018-01-15 Thread M. Taylor
Anders,

As I recall, in all previous versions of Mac OS, even if the bootable stick is
prepared correctly, it does not show up in the Startup Disk preferences dialog
box.

The last time I checked, the only way I could see the bootable stick was via
the Option key-press at startup.

I have not yet made a bootable High Sierra stick so cannot confirm this but
such was definitely the case in the previous OS.

Hi!
I have created a bootable usb stick with Hi sierra as i have to do a clean
install.
The problem is that its not in the startdisk selection when i go to system
prefs and start disk.

Hi list,
This will help anybody looking for the previous version of Skype.

heres a blurb from their site;

Skype is designed to work with Assistive Technologies, including screen readers
provided with Windows and MacOS. Microsoft is aware of potential performance
issues when using the new version of Skype with VoiceOver, on older versions of

Re: Bootable usb stick is not bootable.

2018-01-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Anders,

You cannot simply copy the installer over to the USB stick when creating this
via Terminal. What you need to do is:

1. Use a minimum 8 GB USB stick.
2. Format the USB stick to MacOS Extended (Journaled) and make sure it is
named "Untitled".
3. Make sure that the High Sierra installer is in the Applications folder of
your Mac.
4. Enter the following into terminal:

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\
Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled
--applicationpath /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app --nointeraction

5. Press return.
6. Terminal will ask for your password. Enter it and go have a drink. The
process should take about half an hour.

HTH.

Anders,
macOD Extended Journaled and size is fine. Check the code if using

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\

Re: Bootable usb stick is not bootable.

2018-01-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Formatting it to MacOS X Extended - Journaled should be fine. Not sure why
it's not working for you though. Which method did you use to create the
bootable stick? 5 GB sounds about right, it's usually 5 point something GB for
the MacOS installers. I suggest you try it one more time in case the first
time had unforeseen problems. The other thing to try, is to start up in the
Recovery partition, then go to the Apple menu and Startup Disk. It's possible
that the Mac is being uncooperative due to the APFS vs HFS formatting. This
usually shouldn't be an issue as APFS sees HFS just fine, it's the other way
around that doesn't always work as you might be accustomed to.

Reference books for Apple accessibility?

2018-01-15 Thread John JD Denning
Hi all, are there any books, documents to help learning all the voiceover in
accessibility features for both the Apple Watch, and the Mack OS? I’m aware of
a book written for iOS.

Alex Braillenote question please write offlist

2018-01-15 Thread Stacey Robinson
Alex,
I couldn’t find your address in my contacts so could you please write me off
list.
I saw on Braillenote users that you
had created some programs for the Braillenote apex.
I would like to learn where to find these and what you have.
Peace,
Stacey Robinson and GEB dog Kirk.

Re: Keychain

2018-01-15 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
I'm also in the process of leaving Last Pass.

I'm currently working on switching to Pass:

https://www.passwordstore.org/

I'm currently at a threshold problem in this process--I need to update
my gpg keys, and that's become an issue for reasons I won't bore you
with.

However, I'm attacted to Pass because:

* It offers clients for all my OS platforms and smart devices,
* including integration with most of my browsers

* If a browser I use doesn't have a Pass plugin, I can use the
*   cliboard easily

* I really, really like the organizational structure of Pass,
* where every site's data is ina single file unlockable by your
* gpg key. That makes Pass highly portable, fully accessible, and
*   quite secure, imo.

Just my contribution to the question. The app you're looking at may be
an excellent app. I've no knowledge of that.

Re: VMware Fusion 10.1.1 and BootCamp

2018-01-15 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I actually want to buy a windows 10 license just to try this out myself.
I am not familiar with fedora at all.
Am sadly a bit prejudiced about other distros of linux.
Debian or nothing else *lol*.
BUt i guess they are more similar to each other than different.

Bootable usb stick is not bootable.

2018-01-15 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
I have created a bootable usb stick with Hi sierra as i have to do a clean
install.
The problem is that its not in the startdisk selection when i go to system
prefs and start disk.

RE: Keychain

2018-01-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
Ok, this is getting confusing,

I take it that there is an app called keychain

Because the mac os and IOS platform have a built in feature called the keychain.

Which stores passwords and certs etc

Subject: Re: Keychain

I use Keychain, but I use it to store passwords I come up with. It offers, but
I don't let it generate passwords for me. A few things about Keychain:

* It's not for documents, notes, or anything else. It stores secure
information, like credit card details or passwords, for auto-fill in websites
and apps. To store notes, you'd use the Notes app, optionally
password-protecting them.

* Keychain is only available for Apple products. The moment you want to
auto-fill your password from Keychain on Windows or Android, you're out of
luck. This isn't a problem if you live in Apple World as my family does, but
it's worth keeping in mind and could be a show-stopper for plenty of users.

* It can be a little complex to set up, using a different code to enable on
macOS and doing some other funny things. It's not bad, but it's not a simple
checkbox either.

* Oddly, it will auto-fill at your request. That is, you can use it with no
additional security. On iOS, for instance, you can let it fill in a card or
password, no Touch ID necessary. Of course, your device has to be unlocked, but
it's still worth remembering that anyone can log in or fill in cards if they
have your unlocked device. They can't see passwords, and auto-filled cards that
need a security code still make you enter the code.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Hi all,

not much except the Australian Dollar is usually between 70c & 80c US. Are
people using Keychain? if so can you store documents or as Lastpas calls them
secure notes. In notes I store passwords for Apps and things like safe

Thanks as always for any help.

Hi Thomas,

The key chain in the mac / IOS platforms is really limited to the password and
related security features of the device,

 Certificates etc.

However with the new file app on the iPhone you may get the best of both worlds
with secure document management but I've not really looked in to it yet do use
the key chain on iphone and mac book air.

RE: Quick Question about Using an Apple Keyboard with Bootcamp

2018-01-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
No it's not but it's ok

Once you have windows installed and the bootcamp drivers setup correctly, then
if you have the function keys set to act as f1 f2 normal function keys which
you change under system preferences keyboard in the mac then you can use the
key combination of

Function key shift and f10 to right click or application key

I do this everyday on my mac book air running windows 10.

Subject: Quick Question about Using an Apple Keyboard with Bootcamp

Hi all,
I’m sorry if this question’s been asked before if there’s a good tutorial
available I’d love if anyone could point me to it.

I’m taking the plunge and installing Windows this afternoon, but before I do I
have a concern about the Mac’s keyboard working with Windows. I’ve read
somewhere that the applications key isn’t supported on the Apple keyboard. Is
there a way to re-map the apple keyboard for use on Windows so I have an
applications key and a modifier key for NVDA?
