Re: upgrading my 2009 macbook memory?

2018-06-07 Thread The wolf

what is the amount of ram you are running on your 2009 macbook?

also I did update to High Sierra and it brought my mac to a crawl it is
on 2 gigs of ram but High SierraHigh Sierra made it unusable so I I
downgraded to

the version al kepatan

sorry I can't spell that word it seems to run a bit better  when I down
graded

I have a couple hundred iMacs at work that won't go above El Capitan.

for basic student work, these older iMacs do the job quite well.

Instead of making a judgement call regarding someone else's

express the limitations of the older hardware, and let them be the

I apologize if this sounds critical.  That's not my intent.

Can anyone give me tips on using this app?

Re: DTMF entry during a FaceTime call

2018-06-07 Thread Robert Hill
Hi to all,

Thank you to Tim and Brian for providing a solution to this issue.

I had been trying to work with Apple for quite some time to get this resolved
with no success.

Your work is much appreciated.

Bob Hill.

Re: DTMF entry during a FaceTime call

2018-06-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

What is likely happening in your case has to do with the VO cursor. In the
Navigation category of the VO Utility, if your mouse pointer ignores the VO
cursor, then the VO-shift-space that Brian mentioned does not click the correct
area. You can do a few different things here. First, you could change that
setting in the VO Utility to have the mouse pointer follow the VO cursor, then
when you perform the VO-shift-space the touch-tones should work.
Alternatively, when you make the call, there is a special notification that is
displayed, so, press VO-n to bring focus to that notification area, press
VO-cmd-f5 to bring the mouse to the VO cursor, then perform the VO-shift-space
as mentioned. In either case, the touch-tone should work for you.

2018-06-07 Thread Brian Hansen
Try going into your VO Utilities using VO-F8, then down to Navigation, and make
sure that the mouse follows the VO cursor. A friend of mine had this same
problem, and if I’m remembering correctly, this is how we fixed it.

Re: upgrading my 2009 macbook memory?

2018-06-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
hi,

While I do much prefer having the latest MacOS with all the features and such,
I caution people from telling others not to do things to make their working Mac
even better. Sometimes there are financial reasons, sometimes it's just
because it works and there's no need to have some of these newer features.

I have a couple hundred iMacs at work that won't go above El Capitan. They
work fine and I can't justify the cost of replacing them all with the latest
iMac models. I do have some newer souped up iMacs with Fusion drives and lots
of RAM for video editing and such, but for basic student work, these older
iMacs do the job quite well.

Instead of making a judgement call regarding someone else's situation, I'd
rather just say how performance could be improved, express the limitations of
the older hardware, and let them be the judge of what's worth the cost to them.

I apologize if this sounds critical. That's not my intent.

Re: Wi-fi Query

2018-06-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Another possibility is that both your router and your ISP are responding to
DHCP requests. If you expect your router to be handling DHCP then make sure of
the following:

1. Only one device is configured for DHCP on your LAN.
2. That broadcast ethernet packets on your lan do not get sent out beyond it.

Alexa unofficially works on your Apple Watch

2018-06-07 Thread Mary Otten
Of possible interest to watch owners who love Alexa.

Alexa unofficially works on your Apple Watch
TUAW - The Unofficial Apple Weblog

AOL
Even though Siri's getting a massive update in iOS 12 later this year that
makes it far more versatile, it's not quite the most powerful voice assistant
around at the minute. Until now, it was the only one available on Apple Watch.
If you've wanted to use Alexa on Apple Watch, though, third-party app Voice In
A Can brings Amazon's tool to the device.

This is a standalone app, so you don't need your phone around for it to work,
only a data or WiFi connection. Developer Damian Mehers recommends adding the
app as a Watch complication for easier use. Once you've installed Voice In A
Can and linked it to your Amazon account, Alexa can do Alexa things on your
Watch.

There are some limitations: it can't play music, audiobooks or podcasts. Some
daily flash briefings don't work either. You can, however, control smart home
items you've linked to Alexa and take advantage of its other features.
Annoyingly, your Watch will disconnect from Alexa when the screen goes black,
so you might want to increase the timeout limits. Since you'll need to have the
screen awake and to tap a button to activate Alexa, that shouldn't pose too
much of a problem.

It's not unfeasible that Amazon will add official Apple Watch for Alexa down
the line, with more integrated functionality, but at least this works for the
time being. Just note that Voice In A Can ($1.99 in the App Store) could vanish
if Apple or Amazon decide they don't like it.

Re: upgrading my 2009 macbook memory?

2018-06-07 Thread Nickus de Vos
Hi Hank
The short answer is no, doubling the RAM in that machine from 2 to 4 GB won’t
make a difference. I’ll stick my neck out here and say you probably won’t even
see a difference in performance at all with double the RAM. Don’t go wasting
your money on RAM.

As said the best in terms of speed upgrade you can do is installing a SSD, but
you really have to ask yourself whether it’s worth investing money in to such a
old machine.
If not already, soon that machine will stop being compatible with the latest
Mac OS which basically makes it unsupported. If I were you I’d save up some
money and get a newer machine, even if you can’t afford a brand new one, Apple
also sells a lot of refurbished machines at pretty good prices.

Mail: selected message after deleting / moving a message.

2018-06-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

Yesterday I updated to the latest point release of High Sierra.

It seems to me that unlike with older versions, Mail is not remembering if I am
reading or down in the list of messages.

I.E. When reading mail on my El Capitan system at work, if I use the arrow up
key to read a message and then delete that message using the delete key, the
message selected will be the prior message in the list. It appeared that with
10.13.5 that if I delete message #5 then the selected message is the new
message #5 in the list no matter which direction I am reading. Can anybody
confirm this behavior Did anybody else ever even notice this wonderful feature
of Macintosh mail that most other mail packages can’t seem to get right.
Take care,

Jonathan

Hi,

The easiest method to right-click with the trackpad is to hold down the ctrl
key while depressing the trackpad. Alternatively, you can set in the Trackpad
pane of System Prefs to have it right-click when you press down with two

Re: Specific webpage settings in Safari.

2018-06-07 Thread Alex Hall
Here's the way I know:

* in Safari, press cmd-comma to open preferences
* choose "websites" from the toolbar
* interact with the scroll area and move to "auto play", then stop interacting
and vo-right to the websites table
* find the website you want (the current website open in Safari should already
be selected) and change the settings
* cmd-w to close the preferences window and you're done

Specific webpage settings in Safari.

2018-06-07 Thread Anders Holmberg
Hi!
THe local swedish Radio broadcasting company here is using some kind of
webplayer that does need some changing in safari.
Safari is acting like its an automated sound trying to play which from Safari
11 and higher is blocked by default.
However in order to make this work i am told to right click on the address bar
and change a setting there but when i do this with Voiceover i can not find any
setting related to audio or Video.
Its not a big deal though as i use chrome or their ios app to listen but i am
very curious on what they mean and how a sighted person can get to this setting
but not me.
I have dragged the mouse to the voiceover cursor and then the voiceover cursor
to the mouse so they are at the addressbar.
No go when rightclicking.
I don’t know if i can right click with the trackpad?
I guess its just to press at the very right side of the trackpad?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
